The two are lucky that almost everyone else was paying more attention to Mr. Aizawa's explanation for the scores than to the two of them way in the back with Todoroki. In fact, Todoroki and Aizawa himself are the only ones who can see them, and they both have a similar thought, that Bakugo is growing and becoming more impressive by the day.
And so their teacher proceeds to announcing the next teams. Bakugo and Midoriya both note that they'll really have to come up with something even better this time to beat Yaoyorozu. Instead of trying to come up with ideas by herself, she'll definitely need both Kacchan and Todoroki-kun's help, not to mention the help of whoever gets matched with them.
She's looking forward to it. It's just another challenge. She's definitely looking forward to working with… Yaoyorozu.
…Eh?! Yaoyorozu-san?! The whole trio nearly does a double-take. Their new partner… is Yaoyorozu! Because she and Oojiro were the unlucky pair to get Aizawa, they still have to split up by default even if they won. As for the 2 worst performing groups, Aizawa unfortunately had to bite the bullet and only split up the worst performing one (which in this case was Mineta, Sato, and Aoyama).
For a moment, they can hardly believe it, until they hear a few groans from their classmates, whining a bit about how any team that gets Yaoyorozu is probably gonna win again, and how it's "not fair". Aizawa silences them immediately. He warns them that any group caught slacking and not giving their all will receive a failing grade. Everyone pulls themselves together, feeling the fire under their asses.
Yaoyorozu says a reluctant goodbye to Oojiro. "E-Everyone…" She approaches Midoriya and the boys. Looking like she's still trying to calm down from her recent victory, she composes herself and sternly continues, "I look forward to working with all of you."
Todoroki calmly replies, "Yeah."
Bakugo doesn't answer, growling a bit.
"Yeah!" Midoriya cheerfully responds. "I'm looking forward to it too! Both of your team attacks so far were amazing! I'm sure we'll come up with something great together!"
Bakugo suddenly snaps, "Hey!" making them all flinch in surprise, "Let's get one thing straight!" He marches up to Midoriya's side. "He's in charge! Got it?" Midoriya freezes, wondering for a second if maybe she misheard him. But he continues, "I ain't takin' orders from anybody else!" It's only now that he feels the need to say it because he wasn't as concerned when Todoroki joined. Todoroki may be smart, but he's not exactly a mastermind, and he was easygoing enough to let Midoriya take the lead without a fuss. But Bakugo acknowledges Yaoyorozu's skill as a strategist and still firmly decides to only follow a plan that Midoriya approves of. After all, no one knows him better than her. That's right. This is just to ensure that Bakugo makes the most of his abilities. It's definitely not because he's partial to her or anything!
"Kacchan…" Just like that, Midoriya ends up red and flustered again. She looks down and starts twirling and pinching a piece of her hair. "Y-You don't have to do that. Nobody needs to be the leader or anything…"
"Th-That's right!" Yaoyorozu agrees, certainly not looking for a fight, "It's not that I meant to take over! I just want to help you all, if you'll let me!" She's a little self-conscious about the way she ends up taking charge so easily in most groups, and she worries that she's being overbearing and taking away experience from others.
Todoroki steps in. "It's alright, Yaoyorozu. Don't listen to Katsuki."
"Shoto, you traitor!" Bakugo roars.
Todoroki ignores him and continues, "We all want a say in what move we do, but in the end, we can only go with the best one, no matter who comes up with it."
Yaoyorozu looks at him with relief written all over her face. "Todoroki-san… Thank you! I promise to work to the best of my abilities!"
He nods. "Mm."
And with that, their work begins. Even with the shaky start, Yaoyorozu is able to catch up by reading Midoriya's notes. The raven compliments her on how detailed they are and how exact the information is, giving Yaoyorozu enough parameters to feel an idea coming together. And Midoriya's brainstorming adds even more fuel to her fire. But before they can come to anything conclusive, they run out of time. They each agree to think up some stuff on their own and compare notes later.
Right after lunch, her real challenge begins. She meets with All Might and gets into a car to go to the police department where Taka Nobita is being kept. On the way there, Midoriya thinks about the warnings the other girls gave her. She doesn't want to believe some of those things but… well… she soon sees for herself.
Alone in what looks to be a very cramped interrogation room for criminals, she's surrounded by three male police officers and one female one. One of them even looks bored as he leans against the wall, like he's done this a million times already and just wants to go home. The female officer is holding a clipboard, while a male officer holds a digital recorder and directs Midoriya to take a seat at the singular table in the middle of the room. He sits across from her and puts the recorder on the table. He presses record and says what Midoriya assumes to be the case file, the current time, and lastly her name. Then finally he directs his attention to her and thanks her for coming to speak to them. They're aware that they're taking time out of her busy school day for this, and they seem apologetic enough. Even under the harsh fluorescent light in the room, Midoriya is able to relax a little after they show their consideration.
"Midoriya-san, can you tell us a little about yourself?" the officer across from her starts. "We're aware you go to UA. What year are you?"
"Yes. I'm a first year."
He glances down. In a movement so subtle but also heartbreaking, he glances down at her chest, then immediately back at her eyes. And any sense of comfort she might've had disappears. She can already tell what he's thinking, something like, "A first year? Really? With a chest like that?" Already, within seconds, she already realizes this is going to be much harder than she expected.
"Are you enjoying your studies?" he continues.
"Y-Yes."
"Good. Good. Making a lot of friends?"
"Yes."
His questions and the tone of his voice are calm and gentle, but he doesn't smile. This is all standard procedure for him. He's too tired to smile. "And was Taka Nobita-san… Was he one of your friends?"
"No, sir."
"You're sure? You didn't know him before the incident?"
"No, sir."
"He mentioned that the two of you talked before."
She looks at him with a confused expression. Could Taka Nobita have lied? But what would he have to lie for? Omoda-senpai assured her that his spirit was broken, that he didn't have the will to fight anymore. Was this his last bit of revenge?
The officer continues. "He said you met each other just a few weeks ago and you talked. You wouldn't consider that a friendship?"
"Eh? No… You mean… You're talking about when I met him? Well, of course I talked to him a little bit, but then…"
"But then what?"
Ah. The girls had warned her about this. The police will force her to go into excruciating detail just to make sure they're getting all the facts straight. She braces herself and reminds herself that it's all for the best, all to make sure he finally gets locked up. "…But then he took me to an abandoned shed and…" She steels herself, staring straight into the officer's eyes, as if challenging him, "And he molested me, sir."
"…You're sure?"
Midoriya's eyebrow twitches. "Yes, sir."
"You're sure it wasn't a misunderstanding?"
Midoriya stares at him in disbelief. After all the testimonies they've heard, they must know by now what kind of man Taka Nobita is, so why…? "…No, sir. He used his quirk."
"How did he use it?"
"He extended his fingers and toes and wrapped them all around me so that I couldn't move." She's not backing down. No matter how sick she feels recalling it, she's not backing down. She's going to do whatever it takes.
"…You're sure he didn't just lose control of it for a moment?"
"…I'm sorry?"
"Well, quirk incidents do happen, especially to kids your age. We get a lot of calls about quirks gone wrong. So, we're just making sure."
"…N-No, sir." A strange, foreboding feeling starts to come over her.
He makes a slightly frustrated or perplexed face and thinks for a bit before asking, "Your school friends, would you say a lot of them are friends with Taka Nobita?"
"Wha? No, not that I know of."
"Well, I'm sure some of your girlfriends talk. Did any of them have any kind of relation to Taka Nobita? Maybe a crush? Perhaps even you yourself, if you don't mind me asking?"
"…Why're you asking me this?"
The police officer can see from just her eyes that she doesn't intend to beat around the bush, so in an effort to make this end faster, he admits, "Girls your age can become, y'know, attached to a boy, and when things don't work out, it's normal to feel like you were 'taken advantage of'."
Her eyes widen. She could hear the air quotes in his voice. All at once, she feels a surge of pure rage well up. So much that it takes her a few seconds to stop glaring at the officer and calm down. And of course, the officer doesn't miss that look in her eyes, but to her fiery, raging orbs, he returns a cold, indifferent stare.
Finally she forces out. "That's… not what happened. I had never heard of or met Taka Nobita before that day. I'm just a first year. He's a third year. We'd never met, and I wasn't friends with any other third years who might know him."
"Then why did you conveniently meet him that day?"
Conveniently?! "He… was guarding the garbage disposal. I went there looking for my shoes after some girls stole them."
"Stole them? Why would they do that? Isn't this UA we're talking about? A hero school. And they'd steal your shoes?" His tone is skeptical, sarcastic even.
Close to losing her patience, she firmly replies, "If a hero school can accidentally house a rapist, then a couple of bullies isn't so surprising, is it?"
"…About that… We've talked to quite a few people now about Taka Nobita-san, and it seems that while he has many people who can testify to how good a student he's been, there's only a few people, young ladies like yourself, who tell these kinds of awful stories about him."
"…That's because they're not stories. They're the truth."
"Well… that's what we're here to investigate."
The rest of the interrogation follows this general path. They ask her about her relationship with the other girls who were attacked, if they knew each other before each of their "incidents". They ask her to describe in vivid detail exactly what she claims he did to her. For that part, Midoriya can no longer look him in the eye. She stares down at her own snow-white knuckles as her fists grip her skirt. She only recites what she can remember, what she hasn't successfully suppressed, things like how he squeezed her butt and her breasts.
But the part that breaks her the most is when they ask her to reenact the scene with the female officer. Her friends had warned her about that, but she still… She still couldn't believe it, not until now. Some of them had openly refused to do so, which the police then took as a refusal to cooperate, and they gratefully accepted the conclusion that the girls were hindering the investigation and withholding precious information, which could be taken as a sign of guilt for saying such awful things about this (innocent) young man. Midoriya had been on the fence about whether she would do it or not if they asked, but seeing as how she's been driven into a corner, she feels she has no choice.
She lies down on the ground face up, pretending her wrists are pressed together just above her head. The female officer, who also looks tired, like she's done this a million times before, kneels and hovers over her from between Midoriya's legs. The only thing that makes this slightly less frightening, the only thing, is that she's a woman. The female officer, without touching her, proceeds to place her hands around the areas Midoriya lists. At this point, she's not sure what she's even doing anymore. It's only now she realizes that even after doing all this, the officers might still find some reason not to believe her testimony.
Then one of them asks, "So you said he pinned you like this, but if he was using his fingers to tie you up, then how could he also touch your breasts or butt?"
"He… He can still stretch his fingers enough." This part was definitely hard to explain, so hard in fact, that she was beginning to wonder if it really happened. But she's certain it did, because if it didn't, she wouldn't have been so terrified. But still, there was no good way to explain it. Even she was confused. Which meant of course that there's no way these officers would believe it.
"Then you said… he told you about a girl at your school that he had feelings for."
"Yes."
"But why would he do that with you right in front of him?"
One of the other male officers chimes in, "I was wondering that too!"
The third agrees, "Something like that… I just don't think…"
He wants to say, "I just don't think he'd do that." She can tell. "I don't think a man like this would do something like that. This girl must be lying." That's what they're thinking. It's what they're all thinking. Midoriya starts to feel sick. She feels sick and dizzy, and she starts to shiver. The female officer notices and quickly gets off of her.
"That's enough," she says sternly, helping Midoriya sit up.
Without even thinking, the officer who started interrogating first replies, "I'll say when it's enough. Lie back down."
Midoriya, disoriented, hearing their voices through some kind of strange filter, starts to lean back, but the female officer pulls her back up to an upright position and silently starts to rub the child's back.
The male officer crosses his arms and looks disappointedly down at the female officer, shaking his head. "Are you trying to stall this investigation again, Officer Mihara?" As he speaks, he kneels beside them… "Look, if I say she needs to lie back down, then she needs to—" …and grabs Midoriya's shoulder.
Midoriya jolts awake, her eyes darting to his hand as her whole body starts to shiver violently. She feels the world spin around her, her consciousness fading in and out rapidly, her breath staggering until something seems to choke her entirely.
Then she hears a loud SNAP. Then a scream. The officer's hand leaves her shoulder as he tumbles backwards, screaming, writhing, cursing. Then she feels the female officer lift her up and carry her a short distance. Midoriya feels a small trashcan pressed into her arms. She vomits. And afterwards she can breathe, gasping for air. As she starts to feel a bit better, like she just let out something that had been building up inside her slowly for a while now, her consciousness starts to stabilize, and she starts to hear the voices in the room more and more clearly.
"Officer Mihara! What the hell are you doing?!"
"Chief! Chief, can you hear me?! We're gonna get you to a doctor!"
"Stand down, Officer Mihara!"
Officer Mihara's is the only voice Midoriya doesn't hear. The woman continues to silently rub her back. Then she leans in close and whispers, "Can you stand?"
A feeling of relief floods into Midoriya. Finally. Finally she can hear the voice of the only person in the room who cares about her. The only person who's trying to protect her. Midoriya gratefully nods, even though she's not really sure she can stand. The officer helps her up, and she discovers that she can. And standing up finally gives her a full view of the scene in front of her.
The first officer, apparently the chief, his wrist is bent all the way back, flopping around in the most unnatural way. For a moment, while Midoriya's still a bit disoriented, she thinks about how she didn't know wrists could bend that way, but then slowly realizes that they can't.
Officer Mihara whispers to her again, "Let's go."
She eases the child to the door, despite the protests of the other officers who are admittedly still distracted, panicking over their boss. As the two walk out and wobble down the hall to the waiting area, Midoriya sees All Might leap to his feet. "What happened?!"
Midoriya barely has a clue, hazily replying, "All… Might…"
Officer Mihara replies, "Just… an accident. Quirk accidents happen sometimes." She tells them there will be no further questions and quietly, solemnly directs them out of the building.
The part about being stuck in a cramped room with mostly male officers who keep asking purposefully misleading questions... and then the part about having to reenact the whole attack with a female officer... that's all based on a true story.
