A/N- Thank you to everyone who has read this story and stick with it, it makes me so happy to know people are enjoying it. Here's chapter 31 :)
I blinked once, then twice when I felt someone trying to rouse me. When I was awake enough, I was able to make out a figure standing above me.
"Hey Ems, you've got some visitors," Lena said, gesturing to whoever was in the doorway to come inside.
I adjusted my bed so I was sitting up and so I was able to see who came to visit. There was a blonde haired blue eyed teen and a dark brown haired chocolate eyed teen. Both were pretty in their own way, but the dark haired one held my attention for a few seconds longer.
"Hi Emma," the blonde haired one said. "I'm Kathryn, Kathryn Nolan. But almost everyone calls me Kat."
"You're David's niece right?" I inquired.
She looked surprised but said yes.
"He was in here earlier. Introduced himself as my PT and said you were his niece," I explained.
She looked less surprised and more calm when I told her.
"I know you don't remember Emma, but I'm Regina. Regina Mills."
I don't know what it was about Regina, but another memory flashed in front of me when she introduced herself.
Emma's memory
"Holy shit Gina! Wasn't that awesome?!"
The breathtaking goddess growled at her friend. "Kat, how many times do I have to tell you not to call me that?! It's not my name." She turned back to me and gave me a smile that took my breath away. "Yes, dear, that was rather lovely. May I ask where you acquired such skill?"
"Ummm, my foster mother." I answered, still blushing deeply.
"Foster mother?" the goddess asked.
"Yes, I'm an orphan," I explained honestly.
"I'm sorry to hear that. Forgive my friend and I, we have terrible manners. She is Kathryn Nolan, and I am Regina Mills. What's your name?"
"Oh, I'm Emma Swan."
"It's nice to meet you, Miss Swan. Are you new to this school? I'm afraid I haven't seen you around here before."
"Yeah, I just got here this past weekend, actually. New foster family and all that."
"Oh!" the blonde, now known as Kathryn, exclaimed. "That means you're probably staying with our vice principal and her wife, Mrs. Adams Foster!"
"Lena and Stef, yes, I am. How'd you know?"
"They're the only foster family I know around here. I'm sure there are more, but I've only known about the Fosters."
"Well yeah, my brother and I are staying with them?"
"You have a brother?" Regina asked.
I squirmed a bit under her stare. "Yes, his name is Neal and he's nine."
"Aww, that's awesome!" Kathryn said. "Regina has a sister too, right Gina?"
Regina gave the blonde a withering stare at the nickname before turning back to me, eyes visibly softening. "Yes, I have an older half-sister named Zelena. She is two years older than me and she's actually visiting this weekend with her girlfriend, Mal."
"Half-sister?" I asked out of curiosity.
"Yes, she was my mother's from a previous marriage before she met my father. Zel was still a baby when her dad died, so my father has always been her father."
Regina's face lit up as she talked about her family, and I couldn't help but to stare at her. It made me wish I had a family like Regina did.
"That's pretty cool. I'm assuming you guys are close then?"
"Oh yes, she's my rock. Without her, I wouldn't have ever told my parents I was a lesbian. I thought they would be disappointed and kick me out, but they didn't. My father told me that nothing I told him could ever make him not love me, while my mother sat in silence. I was so scared of what she was going to say that I was practically bawling in my father's arms. When she finally looked at me, she told me she couldn't have asked for a better daughter, and that she loved me whether I liked boys, girls, or even horses."
I let out a snort at that. Regina then looked very bashful, and it made my heart skip a beat and my hands began to feel sweaty, so I discreetly wiped them on my jeans.
"I've never told anyone that the first time I talked to them," she explained shyly.
"I guess I'm special then, huh?" I playfully asked her and gave her a wink. She blushed even more, and it made my heart swell.
"Should I leave you two alone?" Kathryn asked, amused.
We both had blush staining our faces then, but then she must've seen the tear tracks on my face, for a frown began to form on her face. "Emma, are you alright?"
Regina looked concerned at Kathryn's words, and she studied my face closely, noticing the tear tracks as well.
"No, not really," I said, then proceeded to explain what had happened and what had caused me to run away. They both listened intently, and it made me realize that I had made two more friends. I just clicked, like I did with Belle and Ruby, but I felt a different connection to Regina. Maybe it was because I had a very huge crush on her, or maybe it was because we connected on some deeper level. Either way, it's nice to have more than two friends.
When I was done explaining, Regina spoke. "Have you called them to at least let them know you are ok? I'm sure they are worried out of their minds looking for you."
"It's not going to happen. Stef started to chase me, but I was too fast, so I'm sure she thought I wasn't worth it." I wiped away the angry tears that were falling.
"Love, of course you're worth it."
We all turned, me in shock, at the voice that came from the door. It was Stef.
She walked over to me and pulled me in for a hug. I returned it, but I was still in shock.
"I'm so glad you're alright. Everyone was worried sick when you ran off."
She then let go of me and glanced over to see Regina and Kathryn. "Miss Midas, Regina, nice to see you."
"Nice to see you too, Mrs. Adams Foster," Regina replied. Kathryn was looking anywhere but Stef.
"You guys know each other?" I asked.
"Yes, we do."
"How?"
"My father and your foster mom are very good friends," Regina answered.
I looked at Stef to see that she was nodding her head in agreement. "Could you be a little less cryptic?"
"Regina's father is my lieutenant," Stef said.
"Really? That's kind of cool," I answered. "And what about Kathryn?"
"Miss Midas was at a high school party where minors were being served alcohol. She got quite drunk and decided it would be a good idea to drive. I got called to pull her over," she explained.
Kathryn looked sheepish. "I apologized, several times might I add, and I did my community service hours! I don't know what else you would like me to do!"
Stef raised an eyebrow. "For starters, learn how to talk to an adult properly, and second, your apologies mean nothing so long as you continue to attend those parties."
She simply stared at the floor, not saying anything else.
Stef turned back to me. "You, young lady, are going to have a talk with me and Lena when we get home. I will let you say goodbye to your new friends, but I will be waiting right outside that door, so do not try anything."
I nodded my head and watched her exit. Sure enough, she was waiting outside. I looked at Regina and Kathryn. "Is it alright if I get your phone numbers? I'd like to be friends, if that's ok," I said nervously.
"Yes, that's quite alright dear." Regina said.
"Yeah sure! Give me your phone and I'll put my number in," Kathryn said.
I fumbled around in my pockets nervously before taking out my phone and opening the contacts app. Kathryn took a picture of herself for her contact, and put her number in. She then whipped out her phone with the hand that wasn't holding mine. She sent herself a text so I could have her number, and handed it back to me. Her contact photo was her winking, and her name was Kat. The message she sent me back was a picture of Regina that made my heart melt. I knew that would be the photo I would use for her, but I had a feeling she would get angry at Kat if she found out. I exited the messaging app, but not before saving the picture and deleting it so Regina wouldn't see it. I entered the contact app, giving Regina the chance to put her photo and number in. Unlike Kat, she didn't take a photo which made me sad for some odd reason, but she did put her number and name in. She texted herself much like Kat did, and her name made me feel butterflies. It was Gina. I gave Regina a megawatt smile, and she gave me a matching one back. I thanked them, then exited the music room. I could've sworn I felt eyes on my hips and ass, but I shook it off, thinking it was my imagination.
End of memory
"We met at school," I said in a whisper, though it sounded like I shouted it because of how quiet the room was. "I had just run away from the Fosters and I sat down to play when you two came in and applauded me when I finished. We introduced ourselves and started talking when Stef came in. She told me I could say bye to you guys and I got your numbers."
They both looked astonished, but when it sunk in that I remembered them Kathryn sported a large grin and Regina had a shy one forming at the corner of her mouth.
"You're right! Oh I'm so happy you remember us!" Kathryn exclaimed, doing a little happy dance around my room.
Regina and I were both laughing at her. Kathryn didn't care. If anything, it made her dance harder.
"I'm honestly surprised it came back to you, considering you can barely remember your life," said Regina.
"Honestly, I'm just happy I'm gaining memories. I hate not knowing who anyone is, especially myself."
They gave me looks of sympathy, and I internally groaned. If one more person gave me a sympathetic look, I was going to throw a fit. I don't care if I'm 15 years old, I think I'll be allowed to get away with a tantrum considering my situation.
"How long do you have to be here?" Kathryn asked curiously, taking a seat at my bedside, Regina next to her.
"I don't know exactly how long, but I'm pretty sure it's at least over a month."
"Yikes, that doesn't sound fun," Kathryn said.
"You're telling me," I snorted.
"When do you start physical therapy?" Regina asked curiously.
"Tomorrow for my collarbone, and I don't need any for my wrist. And when they deem me ready for my thigh."
"That sounds terrible," Kathryn said bluntly, Regina nodding her head in agreement.
"It probably will be, but if it'll help me heal faster, then I'm willing to do it. I'm already bored here. At least the exercises will give me something to do and something else to focus on."
"That's true," Regina agreed.
"Girls," an older woman (who looked quite a bit like Regina, so I assumed it was her mom) said, knocking lightly on the door.
"Hey Mom, what's up?" Regina asked, confirming my suspicion.
"We'll be leaving in a few minutes, so as soon as you're finished here we're going to get going."
"Ok, thanks Mama C."
I snickered at Kathryn when Regina's mom left.
"What?" she asked, seeming genuinely confused.
"Mama C?" I asked, still chuckling.
She cracked a smile at that. "Yeah, her name is Cora and I didn't want to call her Mom because that's what Regina calls her, so Mama C was created. She doesn't mind."
"You should've seen my mother's face when Kathryn first said it. I couldn't tell if she was horrified by the nickname or pleased Kathryn saw her as a mother," Regina said humorously.
I looked at Kathryn then, and somehow, I recognized that look. The look of sadness and neglect, though it was well hidden when she was with Regina. But now that I noticed it, it was clear as day.
"Well Regina, we probably shouldn't keep your parents waiting," Kathryn said, rather reluctantly.
"No, probably not," the brunette agreed.
"Will you guys come back?" I asked as they got up.
"Of course we will Emma. You're our friend," stated Kathryn.
"Even if you don't remember much of us," added Regina.
"I'll see you then," I said.
They both nodded and I sighed. I threw my head back against the stack of pillows and had to fight the urge to scream. I was so frustrated with not knowing anything or anyone that I felt like if anyone looked at me in a way I thought was wrong, I was going to explode. Somehow, I knew it wasn't going to be pretty if it did happen. Call it a gut feeling.
"Hi Emma," someone said, and I looked over to see Callie.
"Hi," I said, studying her as she made her way over to the chair Kathryn had just occupied.
"I'm not gonna ask you how you're doing. I know you're probably sick of hearing it."
I shot her a grateful look, and she smiled at me. "I just thought I would warn you that Mom and Mama are coming. I know how overbearing they are, so if you want to avoid that I'd pretend I was asleep."
I thanked her and quickly adjusted myself and my bed and closed my eyes, but I actually fell asleep. Damn medicine , was my last thought.
Callie, Stef, and Lena
Right on cue, Lena and Stef entered the room. They saw Emma fast asleep and Callie by her bedside.
"She looked tired so I told her to try and get some rest. As soon as she closed her eyes she was asleep," she explained.
Lena accepted the explanation, but Stef slightly narrowed her eyes at Callie. She didn't think that was the whole thing, but if Emma confided in her she wouldn't pry. She pretended to accept it with her wife and took a seat next to Lena on the opposite side of the bed from Callie. They heard a knock on the door and looked over to see Laura wheeling another person to the bed a few feet away from Emma's.
"Hey guys, I'm sorry but Emma's going to have a roommate for a little while. This is Ethan Walker. He's nine and he broke his leg from climbing a tree and he's going to have surgery tomorrow."
"Hi," he said shyly with a small wave. Ethan had blonde curly hair and brown eyes and was dressed in a hospital gown like Emma.
"Hi kiddo, I'm Stef, this is Lena, and these are our daughters Callie and Emma."
Ethan gave them a tiny smile as Laura helped him into his bed. He got settled and Laura elevated his leg. "Alright E, I'll be back soon to check on you."
"Ok," he whispered.
Laura left the room after giving him a reassuring smile.
"Ethan, where are your parents?" Lena asked curiously.
Ethan looked at her with his head tilted. He took a moment before whispering, "I dunno."
"What do you mean?" Stef asked, her cop and mother instincts kicking in.
"I've never met them. I've been in the foster system since I was a baby," he explained shyly.
"Ok, where are your foster parents?" Lena asked curiously.
Ethan shrugged his shoulders. "I don't have foster parents."
"I'm sorry honey," Stef said.
He gave her a confused look before realization dawned on him. "I'm adopted. My parents aren't here right now because they went to bring me some stuff from home to make me feel more comfortable. Is it ok if I watch tv?"
"Of course sweetheart," Stef said. She stood up and grabbed the remote from Ethan's table and handed it to him since he was a bit immobile.
"Thank you," he said, giving her a sweet smile.
Stef smiled back at him. "You're welcome."
Ethan flicked through the channels before he landed on a movie called We Bought A Zoo. Stef and Lena recognized it because they had watched it as a family, though this was before Callie and Jude. They had gone to see it in theaters with Brandon, Mariana, and Jesus. The kids had been begging them to see it, so they decided to go on a day that was less than pleasant, weatherwise. The kids had a blast and they all thoroughly enjoyed it. It was also one of the first movies they watched with Callie and Jude when they arrived.
"I remember this movie," Callie whispered to her mothers. "I don't remember the last time we watched it though. It was a while ago."
"I remember it too. It was one of the first movies all five, then seven of us, watched together as a family," Stef whispered.
"Have you seen this movie Ethan?" Lena asked.
"No," he said, his eyes transfixed onto the tv.
They all stayed silent after that, letting him enjoy the movie. When it was finished, he turned the tv off and got comfortable. He yawned as he got lost in thought. Maybe having a roommate wasn't such a bad thing after all. When Laura told him, he threw a tiny fit and refused to talk to her. But when he entered the room, he could tell the people were nice. They introduced themselves and he introduced himself, and he had a feeling they wouldn't complain about anything he did. He liked that they were nice and let him watch a movie. They even watched it with him. He wondered if they did it with their family. He did it with his. And when it finished, they didn't complain when he turned the tv off. He could get used to having a roommate if it stayed like this. He yawned before closing his eyes, falling into a deep sleep.
