OLD TOMBS

-

for Gina

-

It's never hard for her to find him.

All she has to do is close her eyes and he's always hiding in one of her memories.

-

Ron thinks she's distant. Thinks she's sick and was effected by something in the war.

He's never understood how hard it is to be here and now, when you've left your heart in the dusty old pages of a book at Hogwarts.

-

As much as she loves books she knows they don't have souls.

But they do have memories and she's never sure if this books are good or bad.

It's not her copy. That lies in some forgotten corner of her library. That has it's own reminders but they are not nearly as important as these she thinks.

-

Dumbledor always calls them back on that day. Every year on that day.

The day the world crumbled and hope was destroyed but it all worked out in the end.

So now when the children leave for sunnier skies, he calls them and they come, like ghosts from almost forgotten wars.

And they speak of old dreams and faded glories and glance sadly at the empty chairs where other used to sit.

And Hermione goes and finds the book she left her heart in.

-

the library smells like silence and parchment and old words and she doesn't even have to close her eyes to see him here.

-

"why are you in the Library? And why are you reading that! You and Ron always said you'd never read that."

"I wanted to find out why you love so much."

-

Sometimes she does shut her eyes just to see if she can still find her way by touch.

She always can.

This path has been etched on her on brain like the thousands of words found and memorised.

It can't be lost.

-

"What are you doing? It doesn't go there!"

-

the book isn't on a shelf.

-

"Come on, we're like the only ones who will ever read this. Lets hide it! Keep it secret, just for us."

"We shouldn't -we, we've talked about this! It wouldn't be right! It wouldn't be fair! Not to Ron and Ginny and not to us!"

"No, it wouldn't, but lets do it anyway."

-

she doesn't know if you can see the ghosts of past sins or if you can still bleed from wounds even years after they've healed.

But what she does know-As she opens the draw and brushes away the cobwebs that form each year and smells the smell of cracked leather and swade- is that things are more than just things. And this book is more than just a book, more than just old words and magic bound in parchment and ink.

And if that is what a soul is then this book has one even if books aren't meant to have souls.

-

But there's no preservation charms on this book, unlike her own, and she doesn't want there to be:

she knows everything turns to dust eventually, even beloved copies of 'Hogwarts a History' and one day she'll just be bones and this book will just be memories.

-

And every year it gets harder and harder to put her heart back and closed the draw again.

But she doesn't take it with her because then she'd lose something important and there are worst things than dying without a heart. One that doesn't really belong to her anyway.

-

And it's never hard for her to see him.

All she has to do is close her eyes and he's always hiding in one of her memories.
