"Guess you like the pie." Natasha quipped, grinning in amusement as Peter polished off his third slice. To be fair, she'd finished two slices herself and was seriously contemplating a third.
Peter blushed, wiping a small amount of blueberry filling from the edge of his mouth. Before he could answer, the owner walked over.
"How is everything you two?" He asked, and Natasha smiled.
"Excellent as always Stan. What do I owe you?" She asked, and the old man laughed.
"Your money's no good here Nat. You know that. Neither's yours kid."
"But I-"
"Don't argue with me. Just have another slice and relax."
Without waiting for a response Stan deposited the two plates he'd been carrying and walked away, leaving Spider-man and the Black Widow to their food.
"Nice guy." Peter said and Natasha nodded.
"He is. Stan's had this place for years. I found it after a mission once."
"Is he always this nice about giving away free pies or-"
"Not exactly. I came in one day and ordered a slice of coconut cream pie. Ten minutes later, a couple of punks came in and tried to rob the place. I broke one's jaw and the other guy was...singing for a while. Ever since, Stan doesn't let me pay."
Peter winced and put a forkful of pie into his mouth. He swallowed and put his fork down.
"Agent Romanoff. Ma'am, I-"
Natasha chuckled. Peter sounded like Rodgers had when they'd first met.
"Just call me Natasha."
"Okay uh Natasha. If you don't mind my asking why are you here? Is there another mission? Not that there has to be but I thought after Berlin that-"
"What exactly did Stark tell you before he brought you to Berlin? What did he teach you?"
"He just told me that Captain America had gone rogue. That he thought he was right, but he had to be stopped."
"That's it? Nothing else?"
"I mean, he did give me my new suit." Peter said, and Natasha closed her eyes, exhaling slowly.
"Come on. We'll take these to go."
No sooner had they stood up then Stan was by the table, placing the remainder of their pies into boxes.
"See you next time Stan." Natasha said, and he smiled.
"Count on it. Hey kid, come back whenever you want. Any friend of Natasha's is a friend of mine." He said, and Peter nodded.
"Thank you sir."
Peter and Natasha walked out the door, Stan shutting it behind them.
Forty-five minutes later they were sitting on a rooftop as Natasha finished telling Peter what had brought them to Berlin. Their pies had been finished long ago, the empty boxes lying next to them.
"So Mr. Stark lied to me." Peter said, shaking his head. His hero, the man he'd thought of as his mentor had lied to him, used him as little more than a pawn in his own private battle with Captain America.
"Tony's a futurist, a big picture guy. He didn't lie so much as omit certain details." Natasha said, and Peter chuckled.
"A lie of omission is still a lie. But I can't say I'm entirely surprised. After our little fight was over, I went and read the Sokovia Accords. I even consulted a few people I trust to make sure I understood the language. They may as well ask us to send our addresses to every person we ever put away. Never mind the fact that they can lock us away like terrorists if we refuse to quit. Of course, I guarantee you the next time something happens it'll be our fault anyway. People in costumes I mean. I didn't mean us like I was calling myself an Avenger or anything." He said quickly and Natasha grinned. Everything she'd read about Spider-man and everything she had observed had led her to believe he was a miniature Tony Stark. In truth, he reminded her more of Steve.
"I know what you meant. Now go get some rest. We're done for tonight."
"So I'll see you again?" He asked, and she smiled.
"Count on it. See you around Peter."
She stood up and jumped off the roof, using the cable in her belt to slow her descent. She landed on the ground, turned and gave Peter a wave and disappeared from sight. The young man shook his head beneath his mask. Man, his life was cool.
The Next Day
"So, Captain America. You know him?" Ned asked as they watched the video Steve had done with his supposed personal friend, the gym teacher.
"Stole his shield." Peter replied with a grin.
"No way! You stole his shield?!"
"Yeah. I had the element of surprise. I got lucky. In a real fight, he would've taken me down." Peter said. That was the truth. He knew Cap had been holding back during their fight. But he also remembered how he had told Peter that he had heart. Peter swore that if he ever had to fight Captain America or anyone again, he would give it his all. Though truth be told, he thought he would be fighting with Captain America as opposed to against him. He couldn't back the Accords. Not in the way they were written.
He was broken out of his thoughts by Liz's voice. Apparently she and her friends had been playing screw, marry, kill again and she had said she would sleep with Spider-man. He smiled as he heard her reply to her friend asking her what if he was a monster under his mask.
"I would love him for who he was, not what he looked like."
He was on Liz's radar! Okay, maybe not him, but Spider-man, and as he was Spider-man that was something! Life was looking up for Peter Parker.
"Peter knows Spider-man!" Ned said, and Peter swore under his breath.
"Yeah, like Coach knows Captain America." Flash shot back, and Peter groaned. There was no way this ended well.
"No really he does." Ned insisted, and Flash laughed.
"Yeah, and I've got a date with Black Widow!"
"Not in a million years, you arrogant, insignificant child." Natasha said as she walked into the gym. All eyes were on her in an instant.
The boys were leering at her, excluding Ned, who looked like he was about to faint, and Peter, who was too stunned to do anything. The girls were speechless. To them, Natasha was an inspiration and an icon, and here she was, in their midst.
She ignored the eyes on her, walking over to Peter and kissing him on the cheek.
"Hey Peter. Ready to go?"
"G..go? Natasha what are you-"
"We've got that meeting with Tony about the Stark Internship. I was in the area, and he asked me to pick you up. Ned, nice to meet you officially." She said, giving him a smile. Then she walked over to Liz.
"Ms. Toomes...Liz. Can I call you Liz?"
"Absolutely uh…"
"Natasha. This meeting could take a while so Peter will miss debate practice today. How about to make it up to you, Spider-man and I put on a bit of a demonstration at your party Friday night?"
"Seriously?"
"Seriously. We'd have to move your party, but I have a space in mind. I'll give Peter the details. Though it might help if he had your number." She said, and Liz nodded. She ran to her bag and grabbed her phone, Peter doing the same after a nudge from Natasha. The two exchanged numbers.
"I don't know how to thank you for this. Both of you." She said. Liz wasn't overly concerned with popularity, but she knew that her party would be the biggest hit of the year thanks to Natasha and Peter.
"Save me a dance?" Peter asked, and she grinned.
"Absolutely." Then she kissed Peter on the cheek.
"Win Nationals. Barton used to go to the competition school." Natasha said with a chuckle. She led Peter out of the school, the young man letting out a whoop when they were in her car.
"Thank you, thank you! What are you doing here? How did you know about Ned and Liz? What's this meeting about and-"
"Breathe Peter. In order. I'm here because we actually do have a meeting about the internship. Then your training starts. I know about Ned and Liz because I do my research and because neither you or Ned are exactly subtle when you look at her." She replied, and Peter blushed.
"I'm sorry I-"
"Don't apologize. You're a young man. You're allowed to look at a beautiful young woman. Just don't ogle her. It's disrespectful."
"Yes Sensei." He replied, and she smiled.
