"Please" the brown-haired witch cried desperately. "It would only be for a month or so. A bit of hand-holding here and a bit of hugging there. Just so that all these nasty rumors stop." The raven-haired boy looked deep in her cinnamon eyes, which were filled with so much hope. Gorgeous green met brilliant brown. And for a second the world appeared to stand still.
"I can´t" the boy answered in a low whisper. Slowly Hermione grew frustrated with the young Gryffindor. "Why?" she asked forcefully pushing him against the wall. Harry didn´t answer. His mind was racing trying to find a way out of the conversation, without breaking her heart for denying the request or breaking his heart for speaking the truth.
In the end, he decided that he would rather break his heart than see his best friend crying because of him. Continuing in a low whisper, while smelling the wonderful vanilla smell he associated with her, he answered. "Because if we do this, and the month is over I ... I know I could not go back to be merely friends again Hermione. It would break my heart, because after having all I ever wanted for this one month. Reality would hit me right in the face."
