The next morning Caroline woke up with a smile on her face. She knew that she had made the right choice moving back to her home. However, it frustrated her that she didn't know where anything was. At her mom's house, everything had been the same for years. She didn't need to learn where the towels were or where the glasses were stored. She felt like she needed to go through every drawer and cabinet in the entire house just to become more familiar with the place. But the fact that she felt safe, happy, and at peace in this house overcame every frustration.

She jumped out of bed, put on the fluffy white robe that Klaus had set out for her the night before, and made her way into the kitchen. When she entered the main part of the house, she realized that she had woken up before Klaus. She wondered if that was how it always happened. Was she usually the first one up? Or was it him? It was the little things like that that could cause her to become irritated all over again.

Klaus had insisted that she take their bedroom the night before. She felt bad making him sleep somewhere else, so she continued to argue with him about it. However, she figured out that she had met her match when it came to stubbornness. He didn't want Caroline to feel uncomfortable or forced to feel a certain way about him already, so he wanted to give her a little space. In the end, he won the argument and slept in the guest bedroom. His consideration for her feelings made Caroline fall for him a little bit more.

Caroline walked over to the coffee maker on the kitchen counter. Luckily, she didn't have to search for the coffee grounds because they were right beside the machine, as well as a small glass jar filled with sugar and a container of cream. As the sound of the coffee pouring into the pot and the aroma filled the air, Caroline leaned against the counter and closed her eyes. She tried to force a memory to resurface. Any memory that could be linked to a morning just like this, but one didn't come. She tried harder, focusing on the smell of the coffee, the sound, the way the counter felt underneath her fingertips. Nothing. She sighed, feeling defeated. If she were being honest, she had hoped that every memory would have come rushing back as soon as she walked in the front door the day before. She knew it wasn't a realistic thought, but if she didn't have hope, she didn't think she would be able to stay strong. Hope was what was keeping her positive and moving forward. She couldn't lose that.

The sound of dripping coffee stopped, so Caroline began her hunt for mugs. She opened and closed the cabinet doors as quietly as possible until she found them. She smiled when she saw the corny "World's Best Wife" and "World's Best Husband" mugs. If she had to guess, she would say that she was the one who bought them as a joke, so she chose them. She filled up Klaus' mug with coffee, leaving it plain. Then, she poured herself a cup, and added a spoonful of sugar and a little bit of cream before mixing it together. She picked up the two mugs and set off in the direction of the guest bedroom.

Instead of knocking, she just walked right in. Klaus was lying on his stomach under the covers, his face almost hidden in his pillow. She smiled when she saw how peaceful he looked. When she had first come out of her coma, he always looked so sad and disappointed. She couldn't blame him because his wife didn't remember him. But, even afterwards, when they started getting closer, he always had a look of worry about him. Like he thought something bad would happen. He never seemed to just be happy, and finally seeing him without a bit of concern was a nice change for Caroline. She almost hated to wake him up. Almost.

Caroline lightly placed the coffee mug on the nightstand before taking a seat beside him on the bed. She gently laid her free hand on his bare back, taking notice of the muscles that his shirt was usually covering. "Nik," she whispered.

When he didn't even stir, she tried a little louder. "Nik," she repeated. "It's time to get up." She shook him slightly.

He sat up so quickly that he almost knocked her over. "What? What is it? What's wrong?" He asked, panicked. His eyes were wide.

"Nik, it's okay." Caroline placed her hand on his forearm to calm him. "I just brought you coffee."

Klaus let out a sigh of relief as he began to rub his eyes. Caroline giggled when she saw that his usually perfect hair was in a mess. It actually suited him, she thought.

"What is it? What's so funny?" Klaus asked so seriously that it made Caroline laugh harder. He wanted to know why she was laughing, but at the same time, it felt so good to see Caroline truly laugh.

"I'm sorry." Caroline was blushing, but she still couldn't completely stop the giggles. When she finally got control of herself, she just shook her head and smiled. "I like your new hair style."

"That's what you're laughing at?" Klaus asked as he began to flatten his hair with his hands. "And here I thought it was something genuinely laughable." He tried to hide his smile, but he couldn't. It was too good to see Caroline happy and in their home.

"I'm sorry," she repeated. "But I made you coffee." She pointed towards the mug on the nightstand. "Do you forgive me?" She made the best pouty face she could, and waited for his reply.

"I'll think about it," he smirked as he leaned over to grab the mug. "Did you make it how I like it?"

"Of course. It's plain, no sugar or cream," she replied like nothing.

Klaus, on the other hand, turned back towards her. "You remembered?"

Caroline was about to take a sip of her coffee when her head jerked back upwards. "Oh my goodness. I didn't even realize. I shouldn't know how you like your coffee, I remembered!"

Klaus' smile grew as he realized that this house might be doing Caroline's memory some good after all. "The funny thing is, I'm usually the one who makes the coffee."

Caroline smiled, thinking about the question that had crossed her mind earlier. Klaus held all the answers that she needed. "So you usually wake up earlier than me?"

Klaus laughed. "Sweetheart, everyone wakes up earlier than you."

Caroline gasped and slapped him on the arm playfully. "Obviously, you didn't today."

Klaus looked over at the clock to see that it was after ten o'clock. "I must have been really tired. I never sleep this late."

"You needed it then," she smiled.

He nodded, looking down into his coffee cup. "I probably did. That was the best night's sleep that I've had in a long time," he told her, honestly.

"I would ask you why you haven't slept well, but I'm afraid I already know the answer to that." She was sad that it was because of her.

Klaus put his cup away before taking hers and doing the same. He then placed a hand on her cheek to make her look at him. "It is not your fault, love. I'm just glad you're home, and that you know I'm right here if you ever need me." She nodded. He slowly closed the gap between them before his lips landed on hers. She could have stayed in that moment forever.

As they sat in the guest room, drinking their coffee, Klaus told Caroline stories about when they first started building the house. He had technically given it to her the day they got engaged. That was how he proposed.

Flashback~ Proposal

Caroline didn't know where Klaus was taking her. He didn't say it was a date, or a surprise, or anything that hinted to where they were going to be exact. She was confused because she knew there was nothing in the direction they were headed.

"Nik, where are we going? This road is going to dead end soon." She had already asked where they were going more than once. Lucky for her, he was patient with her.

"Just trust me, sweetheart," he repeated the same response again.

Caroline sighed and rolled her eyes, but turned back to the window as he continued to drive. She heard Klaus chuckle at her reaction.

Five minutes later Klaus pulled off the road and parked. Caroline looked around at the empty landscape all around her. The only thing on the land was trees. There were no buildings, nothing at all to visit. Klaus stepped out of the car, so Caroline followed his lead. She continued to look around, trying to find any reason at all that he would have for bringing her here.

She finally gave up. "Nik, what are we doing here?" She gestured to the empty land. "There's nothing here."

He walked up beside her and took her hand in his. He led her through a few trees until they walked out into a clearing. "This is what I wanted to show you."

Caroline looked around the place again. "An open lot?" Her brow furrowed as she looked at him, trying to make sense of the outing. "I don't get what I'm supposed to be looking at."

"It's mine." He replied.

"Why would you buy land? You have plenty of it around the mansion."

"I won't want to live there forever, love." He looked around at the land in front of him.

Caroline took a step away from him, beginning to really look at the property. "Why not? I mean, this place is pretty, but the mansion is your home."

"Exactly. It's my home. It's not our home." He told her.

Caroline stopped in her tracks and turned towards Klaus. He was down on one knee with an opened box in his hand. Caroline's hands covered her mouth as she gasped.

"Caroline Forbes, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"

Caroline felt the tears beginning to form in her eyes. She never expected this. A laugh burst from between her lips as she began to rapidly nod her head. "Yes! Yes, of course I'll marry you." She held her hand out to him as he slipped the giant diamond ring on her finger. She nearly knocked him down when she threw herself into his chest as soon as he stood up. He wrapped his arms around her, never intending to let her go.

As he began to show her the property, he explained that he was going to have a house built any way she wanted it. Then, as a joke, he began to map out the house.

"I was thinking that maybe the living room would go here." He gestured to the area around him. Then, he took a few large steps. "And this could be the dining room."

"No, no, no." Caroline shook her head. She started showing him exactly where every room was going to be placed, what color the house was going to be, and the type of porch they were going to have. He stood back and smiled as he watched her design their future home.

Present Day

"So that's how you proposed," Caroline smiled at the story although she wished it was a memory. "Who knew that you were such a romantic?" She teased.

"Only for you, sweetheart." He honestly stated.

"So what's on the agenda for today?" Caroline asked.

Klaus shrugged. "Is there anything that you would like to do?"

Caroline thought about it for a minute. She wanted to do something that could spark a memory, but she didn't know what. "Is there any place that you know of that could maybe bring back a memory?"

Klaus shook his head. "There could be a ton of places that make you remember something. I don't think there's going to be one specific location that will bring back many memories anymore. We've already been to the same place we went on our first date, and we are at our house which is also the location I proposed. I don't know where else to go."

"Hmmm," Caroline continued to think. "Where did we spend a lot of time when we were dating? Or maybe who did we spend a lot of time with?"

"I guess we spent most of our time at the mansion with my brother, my sister, Elena, and Matt."

Caroline's eyebrows shot up. "You hung out with Matt?" Matt was Tyler's best friend after all.

"Only because my sister liked him." He smirked. "Which I guess I will have to deal with from now on since they are dating. I'm surprised he hasn't popped the question yet."

Caroline shook her head and laughed. "Matt is a great guy. Rebekah could do a lot worse."

"I supposed." He obviously thought she could do better.

Caroline laughed again, but let it go. "Let's just go to the mansion. I'd like to see what it looks like inside."

Klaus nodded once. He was getting better at not letting those types of statements bother him. Either that, or he was finally getting used to the idea that she was experiencing a lot of places as if they were her first visit. "Let's go to the mansion," he repeated as he followed her lead and began to get ready.
