Chapter 47 -
"The surveillance drones that Lucius has so nicely supplied are proving to be very useful," Alfred said as the batcomputer showed video footage of a ship where Riddler was. The video footage also revealed that the Riddler had three torture boxes with a hostage trapped in each. "there also appears to be four hostiles, no wait, make that six."
"And there are three hostages instead of two." Thomas noted.
"So he lied about how many hostages he has, or perhaps he has simply picked up another one on the way." Martha frowned.
"Bastard." Thomas said, shaking his head before pointing to a large bunch of missiles that appeared to be fitted on one end of the ship. "And that looks very, very dangerous."
"They're likely fitted with a radio-wave guidance system that works just like the Riddler's disk." Alfred frowned.
"So, what's the plan?" Selina said as Harry was putting on his suit. "You going to go in, disable the missiles, save the hostages and take out Nygma and the other bad guys?" She asked.
"No." Harry shook his head as his cape magically appeared. "Well, I am going to do most of that."
"What do you mean?" Martha frowned.
"Well, it's clearly a trap." Harry said as he gestured to the screen. "If Riddler is really challenging me to find him then he's got to have thought of a plan for when I do manage to track him down. So I can't just rush head first into his trap. If I go for his missiles then he could activate them, they're remote controlled so I have to keep Riddler in a position where he can't activate them."
"So, what are you going to do?" Selina asked.
"As far as Riddler is concerned this is a chess game and he thinks he's winning, I have two things I like to do when I'm losing. If possible I simply throw the entire board." Harry replied.
"Which is definitely not advisable when the board has missiles on top of it." Alfred dryly commented. "What's the second?" He asked.
"Change the game." Harry answered.
"Okay, and how are you going to do that?" Selina asked impatiently.
"I'm going to add another piece to it." Harry said as he looked at her, a smirk on his face.
Once the sky had darkened it had become easy enough for a simple bat to fly onto a ship unnoticed, the bat landed near the missiles before transforming back into the Batman. Batman slid down some stair rails before he snuck behind a pair of hostiles, he snuck behind one and pulled him into a choke hold, quickly forcing him to lose consciousness. Batman quickly but quietly dropped the body down on to the floor before moving onto the next, he placed a hand over the hostile's mouth before hitting him with a stunning spell. Once done he quickly concealed himself by hiding at the back of a large, green shipping container.
"Urgh, where is he?" Batman heard Riddler complain. Batman peaked his head out and saw four hostiles with guns standing in-between the three death chamber boxes while Riddler was sat up on top of a large box, his mask on and his hood up, shadows covering the lower half of his face. He lazily twirled his cane in one hand while tapping his fingers on his leg with the other. "Is the big bad bat afraid to show up?" He snorted in an amused manner. "Probably was too stupid to find his way here. After all, what remotely intelligent man decides to dress up as a flying rodent and..."
Whatever Riddler was about to say was cut off as Batman ran across the top of the shipping container, attracting the attention of Riddler and the hostiles. Batman flipped off the container, throwing four batarangs as he did so. The batarangs took out a hostile each, leaving just Riddler, Batman and the hostages.
"Wow," Riddler breathed out when Batman landed in front of him. "that's impressive."
"It's over, Riddler." Batman said as he looked up at him.
"Indeed, it is, except I feel like there is one thing you should know."
"What?"
"I'm not the Riddler." He said, pulling down his hood and removing his mask to reveal a blonde man. "Ta-da." He grinned. Batman froze for a brief second before he felt his magic flare up to warn him of danger, he quickly rolled to the side just as a metal hook flew past where he had previously been standing, the hook was pulled back by the rope that was attached to it before reattaching to Riddler's cane.
Batman looked to where the hostages were being held and saw that the real Riddler had stepped out of one of the hostage boxes, Batman quickly raised both of his hands, he cast a stunner in the direction of the real Riddler who was pulling something out of his pocket while casting a summoning spell at the fake Riddler's shoes just as the man stood up. Once his shoes were pulled the man fell on the top of the box
"Oh god-fuck!" The man blurted out as his mid-back crashed against the top of the box before he fell forwards and landed on his face.
The real Riddler had dodged Batman's stunner and pulled out a gun, he fired it at Batman who quickly raised a hand and created a magical shield to protect himself. As he shielded he used his free hand to take a batarang out of his belt, by the time Riddler had fired his eighth bullet Batman dropped his shield cast and jumped to the side while throwing his batarang at Riddler. The batarang curved throw the air before hitting Riddler's hand, knocking the gun out.
"Damn!" Riddler cursed, shaking his hand. "Very impressive, Batman." He said, sneering as he did so. His gaze shifted towards the barely conscious fake Riddler. "You jumped your mark, dumbass."
"Ow..." The fake groaned before being hit by a stunner from Batman.
"Once again, impressive, Batman." Riddler smirked. "Some energy blast? A concussive force designed to incapacitate your enemies?"
"Surrender." Batman replied.
"What about that invisible shield of yours?" Riddler persisted. "Was it a simply a pop-up shield with reflection panels so it would appear invisible? Doesn't really matter, I suppose." He said before he twirled his cane before he stopped and spun it around so that Batman could see a pair of buttons on the cane, one button was red while the other was green. Riddler placed his thumb right above the red one. "Red button activates the death chambers, Batman." Riddler told him while using his free hand to pull out a device that looked a lot like a detonator. "This simple device activates the missiles," Riddler smirked. "with me so far, Batman?" Riddler asked in a patronizing tone.
"You won't press either of them." Batman growled. "I will stop you."
"Harry, it's done." He heard Selina speak into his ear piece.
"Oh Batman," Riddler sighed. "your response is as predictable as it is banal. Let's cut to the chase, I'm giving you one chance to save the lives of these two unwilling volunteers her…" Riddler said as he gestured to the two terrified looking hostages. "… along with the citizens of Gotham, remove your mask or helmet or whatever you want to call that ridiculous thing on your head, do it, Batman."
"No." Batman said not even more than two seconds later.
"Excuse me?" The Riddler blinked at him with surprise evident in his tone. "I'm not sure I heard you right, either that or you didn't hear me right. I will repeat myself, do as I say and remove your mask or these people and Gotham dies!"
"I heard you, Nygma, but you're mistaken because they're not going to die, neither is Gotham." Batman replied confidently.
"I'm sorry, did you perhaps miss the fact that I control the fate of these two overrated troglodytes?!" Riddler demanded as he gestured to the death chambers. "And this activates the missiles!" Riddler yelled as he shook the missile remote.
"I know." Batman said before he held up a hand and aimed it at Riddler.
"Oh my non-existent god!" Riddler groaned. "You can't do anything! I have...OW!" Riddler yelped out as he suddenly felt something crash against his cane hand, his cane dropped and Batman didn't waste a second before summoning it away from Riddler before rushing forwards to cut away the distance. "FUCK!" Riddler cursed as he looked at the batarang that had pierced his hand. "What the..." Riddler found himself cut off when Batman grabbed him by the neck and lifted him up in the air.
"You're done, Riddler!"
"Am I?" Riddler gasped out before pressing the button on his remote. "And now...Gotham will suffer because of...where the fuck are the missiles?!" He said when he noticed that the missiles hadn't launched.
"Riddle me this: what's green and bruised all over?" Batman asked as his other hand formed into a fist.
"That...was...horrible..." Riddler managed to get out before a powerful punch connected with his jaw.
"So...did you enjoy that?" Alfred asked when Batman came back into the batcave.
"Loved it," Harry grinned after taking off his helmet. "I just hit him...and hit him...and hit him...and hit him..."
"We get it, dear." Martha said, cutting him off.
"Yeah, we saw the video feed." Thomas said in an amused voice.
"It was very cathartic." Harry grinned just as Selina entered the Batcave, taking off a bandana and pulling down her hood.
"That was awesome!" She grinned as she pulled Harry into a hug before pulling back so she could look at him. "That was amazing! Did you see me?!"
"No, it was dark and I was focused on Riddler." Harry pointed out with a calm smile.
"Whatever, I disarmed the missiles and then I disarmed Riddler! That batarang to his hand felt so good!" She grinned.
"I'm glad you enjoyed yourself." Harry said as he began taking off the rest of his armour.
"Yeah, though if I'm going to go out again then I should really get my own costume." She smirked.
"Lucius is already working on the designs for it, I'll show you tomorrow." Harry said casually as his cape disappeared.
"What? Really?" Selina blinked as she looked at him.
"Yeah," Harry answered honestly. "I figure it's only a matter of time before you insist on coming out with me. I saw how much you liked being out there when we were at the casino and I know you well enough to know that if I say that you can't come then you'll probably just do it anyway."
"Well...true," For a moment Selina wanted to argue that she wouldn't have but conceded Harry's point. "but are you serious? I'm going to go out with you? Dressed as a bat?" She asked.
"No, don't be ridiculous. I'm the bat." Harry said once he managed to get his armour off. "I'm the Batman, I have something very different planned for you. "
"I'm sorry to interrupt but are you sure?" Martha asked, not entirely able to hide her dislike of the idea. "I mean...it's one thing for Harry to do it but...that's not to say that you are anyway less capable!" She quickly said when she saw Selina open her mouth. "But it's dangerous enough for Harry." She said, giving Selina an apologetic look.
"I know but she's about as stubborn as me." Harry said with a shrug, 'what can I do about it?' his body language seemed to say.
"Hey!" An offended Selina said, lightly slapping his arm.
"I'm kidding, I'm kidding." Harry smiled, as he pulled her into a hug. "I'm not kidding." He mouthed to the others.
The next day Harry found himself sat in his office at Wayne Enterprises with Katie Haywood sat opposite him.
"That is lovely, Miss Haywood. Thank you." Harry smiled as she handed him a file. "Hmm," Harry hummed as he began reading through it. "this looks promising, you must have worked really hard on it."
"I have," Katie confirmed with a pleased smile. "and is it to your liking?"
"Hmm, it is but I still want to carefully look through it." Harry replied. "That's not a knock against you but when dealing with charities, companies prefer to spend as small amount of money as possible."
"Ah, enough to look nice, huh?" She asked in a knowing manner.
"Well," Harry chuckled. "I can't speak for everyone, only myself. You understand?"
"Of course." Katie said with a small nod.
"Though if I am being honest, my problem would not be with spending money as opposed to wasting money." Harry commented.
"Says the billionaire with how many cars and motorbikes?" Katie asked, raising an eyebrow, an amused smile on her face.
"Point." Harry conceded with a smile. "But with that being said I still think that we should..."
SMASH!
Harry and Katie hopped up to their feet when they saw that three of Harry's windows had been smashed through while ropes were dangling outside, those very ropes had likely been used by the three people that had landed in his office. The three of them were all dressed in black, looking exactly how you would expect a ninja to look. Their ninja costumes were completed with a sword resting in a scabbard on their backs along with belts wrapped around their waists that likely contained some very useful equipment. Harry's gaze was drawn to the bladed forearm gauntlets that they were wearing.
"What the fuck?" Harry said under his breath as he tried to work out exactly why the League of Assassins were here.
A.N: Hi guys, hope you liked the chapter. If you didn't then my only excuse is that I wrote this today while still recovering from Covid. Anyway, just want to say a few things:
1) Yes, Harry does have a plan for Selina. Also I know someone might want to start complaining about how it's 'not realistic' or something for Harry to want to include Selina, I just want to point out that the first Robin was fighting crime at...what...eight years old? All I'm saying is I don't think what I've done is worse than that.
2) Originally I planned to do three books on this story but now I'm not quite sure, I think I might limit it to one or two since I want to move on to other stories. I'm not sure yet.
Anyway thanks for reading and feel free to leave a review.
