"God, you guys...!"
"Help! Help!"
"Raben... Raben wake up!"
Raven could hear the sounds of her heartbeat in her head. She wondered if that was normal- could she hear her heartbeat before? She couldn't open her eyes to see where she was, all she could do was stare into the forever darkness and hear the chaos that was happening around her. Screaming, maybe. There was a shrill whistling in the air that she couldn't quite decipher. There were thumping noises, and a rattling that sounded vaguely familiar.
Something was shaking at her shoulder and screaming in her ear, but she couldn't understand them. She didn't want to open her eyes to see them either. The dark world she was in was too peaceful and nice to leave now. She thought of Beast Boy, strangely. That one time where she had been really sad, and he had been the one to comfort her. She sort of wished that he was there now, holding her and telling her that she wasn't weird. She longed for his touch, any touch, as long as it was warm. Comfort. That was all she wanted. Someone to hold her.
Everything faded again.
Jinx could hardly believe her eyes. Beast Boy had crawled to the front and was screaming and shaking Raven's shoulders, asking her to wake up and pleading that he'd be good for the rest of his life if she just opened her eyes, but she didn't even move. Jinx wasn't even sure if she was conscious or not. The other Titan children were huddled in their seats, crying and whimpering quietly, their faces frozen in fear. But Raven taking a nap in the midst of it all was the least of their problems at the moment.
The jet was currently falling out of the sky.
Heart thudding, Jinx climbed her way to the front and took a look at the controls, her mind reeling with confusion. Taking Raven's body and throwing it not so gently into the back, she sat herself in the pilot seat and grabbed the steering wheel and tried to bring it upwards, but it didn't budge. The alarms were blaring and all these buttons were blinking.
Shit. Shit. Shit. Jinx pressed a couple of random buttons and tried to jerk up the wheel again, but there was no luck.
The jet rattled dangerously, and she could see the reef of the Pacific Ocean start to rush into view, getting closer with each passing second. She cursed out loud, forgetting that there kids in the back. Whatever- it wasn't like it would matter if they all died in a plane crash anyway. Why did Raven decide to fly over all the goddamned oceans of America?!
Jinx quickly sat back in the seat and waved her hands over the dash, her fingers glowing pink. It traveled into the metal and she heard a small zing! as her powers sunk into it. Then she tried to jerk up the wheel, one last time, and then the damned thing came off in her fingers.
"Shit!" she screamed, forgetting her language once again. Jamming the damned thing back onto place, she twisted it to the side and felt her entire body lurch to the left. She heard the children banging on the side of the jet and screaming out in pain. She cursed out loud, for what felt like the hundredth time.
There was no way they were going to make it. The jet was doomed; her powers had only made it worse. Now the engine was failing, and one of the wings had caught on fire. They were trapped between the heating metal and the cold, deep ocean. There was no escape- and Jinx couldn't fly. Out of all the things she could do with her powers, she couldn't fucking fly.
In one last desperate attempt, she threw herself in the back and picked up Raven's lifeless body, holding it close to her. Then she stared at Beast Boy, her eyes glowing pink with panic.
"Kid! You need to turn into something that flies!" she screamed, pushing flying pieces of leather out of their faces.
Beast Boy turned an even paler shade of white. "I.."
"If you're gonna do it, you need to do this NOW!" Jinx shrieked, clutching Raven's face closer to her so that it wouldn't shake so bad. Thoughts were whizzing in her mind. "C-change into a pterodactyl! That bird I showed you earlier! Can you do that, kiddo?"
Beast Boy stammered something, but she didn't hear it. The alarms behind them started to blare louder and louder, the wind whizzing around them intensifying.
"Pwease! Save us!" Robin cried, clutching onto Starfire with all his might. The other children started to sob hysterically, their tears floating off their faces.
Jinx turned around and saw nothing but the ocean coming into view. She turned back to Beast Boy, her voice starting to give out. "YOU GOTTA DO THIS NOW!"
"I.." Beast Boy was sobbing under his breath.
There wasn't enough time.
With a shout of rage, Jinx kicked the jet door open and watched it disappear into the sky. Then she took one hand and grabbed Robin's cape and threw him, Starfire and Cyborg out of the jet at the same time. They plumetted towards the water, shrieking their tiny heads off. Then she grabbed Beast Boy and flung him out the damn jet too, watching the tiny green blob grow smaller.
She clasped Raven's body as though it was the most important treasure in the world, and with a deep breath, she jumped from the jet herself.
There was a terrifying feeling of being suspended in midair, with nothing to hold her safe. There was no ground, there was no harnesses, there was nothing to ensure that she was going to land on the ground safe and sound. She could hear the ocean water sloshing very closely to them, and all she could do was scream louder and bury her face into Raven's neck, hoping that there would be a bit of comfort there.
When her body hit the water, she instantly felt red-hot pain. Instinctively, she let go of Raven and clutched her searing body, screaming. Water rushed into her mouth, filling her lungs and throat. She coughed it up, only to have another wave of it come back in. Then she noticed that Raven was nowhere to be seen.
"Raven!" she screamed, looking around her frantically. Oh god, had she lost Raven? What the fuck did she just do?
On an impulse, she held her breath and dove underneath the water. She searched for the dark-haired girl, but there was nothing but swirling water and darkness underneath them. She swam deeper and deeper, desperately hoping and wishing.
When she couldn't breathe anymore, she went back up to the surface, sobbing and spitting up ocean water. Small pieces of debris was hitting her from everywhere, and she flung herself onto a large enough piece so she wouldn't drown herself. There was the horrible smell of smoke in the air- it reminded her of the time that she and her team had robbed a large bank. Gizmo had planted so many bombs that the entire damn building had imploded on the spot.
But instead of victory, this ended in death. Jinx was surprised to feel sorrow welling up in her chest.
Why was she feeling so sad? They were the Teen Titans. They had hunted her down before. They had called her a criminal. She was a nothing to them but the enemy.
Jinx struggled to keep herself afloat, and despite it all, she screamed out Raven's name again, foolishly hoping that she would rise from the ocean like the creepy demon she was and answer her. But there was nothing but the heavy waves and the seagulls above her.
Hell, she even felt bad for flinging the kids out of the jet. Teen Titans or no, they were kids.
Shadows loomed above her, and she sunk her head down on the cold metal, cursing the seagulls. It was like they were mocking her pain, laughing that she was going to die in the ocean while they could fly away whenever they wanted. No amount of her power could get her out of this one. She couldn't even swim, dammit. The shadows above her grew larger, and she lifted up her head to scream at the creatures and shoot them down.
But as she lifted her head, she realized that they weren't seagulls. Instead, it was one large bird, blocking out the light. It was a bird that she had sworn was extinct, until now. And she was fairly sure they weren't green either.
It was a pterodactyl. A Beast Boy pterodactyl, to be exact. And he was huge, with a wingspan that was about as big as the jet itself. Suddenly, Jinx was glad that she had shown them that tiny little hologram in her hands.
Three small heads peered over the side of the bird, staring at her with wide smiles.
"Jiiiink!" Robin called, waving his tiny hand. "We come a'rescue ya!"
"We have come to do the 'rescue' Lady Jink!" Starfire piped up, waving her small Tameranian hands at her.
Jinx couldn't help but grin- she was pathetically relieved to see them. As Beast Boy lowered himself to where the ocean-line was and she slowly climbed aboard, she couldn't help but accept the attack of hugs that she was receiving. The Titan children were wet, but they didn't seem too cold or even unhappy. They were simply happy to be alive.
But as Robin pulled away, he looked up at her with a sad look on his face. "Jink.. where is Raben?"
Cyborg nodded in agreement. "Yeah! Where's Raben? Is she okay?"
Jinx felt her throat tighten, and for the first time in a long time, she thought she was going to cry. Instead, she pushed down her feelings and tried to bring up her old tough demeanor and tell them that their friend was dead. Lost in the ocean. Gone forever. Shark bait. As she tried to bring those words out into the open, she couldn't help but gaze at those small, hopeful faces. A small boy with a torn mask. An alien girl with pretty red hair and green eyes. A half robot half boy cyborg, with a red blinking eye. And last of all, the small green changeling that loved Raven the most. As she gazed that them, she realized that even though they were her enemy for the longest time, they had something that she never had. Friends that were family. And staring at them, she realized that they probably loved Raven more than her own team had valued her.
Her team had ditched her when they got the chance. But Raven had fought to the end trying to fix the mistakes she had made, because she refused to turn her backs on them no matter what.
"She.. she just went on a trip." Jinx heard herself say. "The bad guys that are hunting you guys have run away because she's chasing them. And she won't come back until they're good and gone."
"But when willz she comes back, Jink?" Starfire asked, clutching onto her wet sleeve.
Jinx sighed and looked at the ocean, dark blue and unrelenting. "I don't know, Starfire. That's a pretty big job for one superhero to take on alone."
"Then we HALP!" Cyborg exploded, throwing his tiny fist into the air. "We halp her, jus like she halp us!"
"Your mission right now is to sit down quietly while we go to land." Jinx scowled, sitting on Beast Boy's back. She patted his back and he began to fly, rising higher into the air until they were hidden in the clouds.
The kids sat down and talked quietly amongst themselves, resting their heads against one another and cuddling for warmth. Starfire dozed off almost immediately, but Cyborg and Robin remained awake, clutching the alien in their arms.
Jinx wrapped her arms around herself and watched as the ocean move underneath them. She felt cold on her face, and she realized that it was a tear sliding down her cheek. She wiped it away before the kids could see, but if she had been alone, she would've been bawling her eyes out.
Somewhere in that ocean, Raven was resting. She hoped that her end hadn't been painful. For all the fighting they had done, Jinx actually missed her. Even though they had been enemies, there was a chance that they could've been friends.
But now..
You did your best, Raven. Jinx thought silently. For all it was worth, you did a damned good job of taking care of your friends. I'm going to continue this mission, and help restore the Titans.. because they deserve it. You deserve it. Goodbye Rae-Rae. Rest in peace, would'ya?
With that, she turned her attention to the sky and closed her eyes.
