I do not own any of these characters, but do enjoy playing with them!
Maura, Jane and Angela are gathered in Maura's kitchen preparing for the day. There is a pot of potatoes boiling on the stove. The women have created an assembly line for deviled eggs; Jane is peeling the eggs, Maura is cutting them in half and putting the yolks in a separate bowl. Angela is getting the ingredients to mix in the yolks, including her secret ingredient.
"I have eaten deviled eggs before, but I have never made them." Maura continues to cut the eggs with a special curvy blade that Angela brought over to make the eggs 'pretty'.
"Oh, it's easy, sweetie. When you start mixing the filling, they are no set amounts. You just have to watch how smooth or chunky you want it and do some taste tests to get it just the way you want."
Maura smiles sweetly at Angela. "Will you share your secret ingredient with me."
"If I told you that, I'd have to kill you."
Maura's face gets a surprised look on her face until she hears the Rizzoli women begin to chuckle, then offers a tentative smile.
"It's a phrase of speech, Maur. Ma will let you in on the secret, won't you, Ma?" Jane arches her eyebrow at her mother.
"Of course, I will. I was only teasing and Maura IS family, or almost legally." Angela looks pointedly at Jane.
Jane arches her eyebrow at her mother. "Ma, this is your first warning."
Angela looks innocently down, "What? I was only making a comment."
Jane rolls her eyes and continues to peel eggs. Maura is always amazed at the amount of non-verbal communication is exchanged through the eyes and brows of the Rizzoli women, maybe a study could be done about women and their eyebrow communication.
"Ok, Maura dear, I am ready to start."
Maura looks over to Jane, she doesn't want to learn a Rizzoli family secret without Jane. "Jane, are you going to watch?"
"Oh, I know her secret, I'm going to cool the potatoes so we can make potato salad next."
Maura goes over to Angela and the bowl of yolks. Angela has placed mayonnaise, spicy brown mustard and yellow mustard on the counter, salt and pepper are nearby. Angela takes a spoonful of mayonnaise and plops it onto the yolks. Next, she squirts a little yellow mustard and a good amount of spicy brown mustard and sprinkles some salt and pepper in.
"Now, we are ready to begin mixing. Sometimes, I leave it a little chunky and spoon it back into the eggs, but this time I want to pipe it in and make it a little fancier." Angela takes Maura's Krups hand mixer and starts to mix the ingredients.
"See, it's still a little dry, so we add more wet ingredients. First, give it a little taste so to know the balance of mayo and mustard. I want it a little spicier, so I'm only going to add brown mustard." Angela dips the tip of her finger in and tastes. Maura hesitates.
"Go ahead, Maura. I promise we'll use spoons next time, no double dipping." Angela waits as Maura tries the mixture.
"Oh, it's tasty, but I agree, it can be a little smoother."
Angela nods and adds more wet ingredients and mixes again. She gets a spoon and offers it to Maura.
Maura nods. "I like it. It plays well on the palate."
Angela smiles. "Almost done. I'll be right back." Angela heads to the guest house.
"Maura, can I have a taste?"
Maura dips in a spoon in the mixture and offers it to Jane, but Jane shakes her head no.
"You taste it, Maura." Maura licks the mixture from the spoon. Jane lowers her head and kisses Maura. Her tongues dips in to explore Maura's mouth.
"Mmm, tastes good." Jane is wearing a cocky grin as she stares down at Maura.
Maura keeps her eyes closed for a moment longer, savoring the sensation left from Jane's kiss, the way her whole body tingles. Jane's kisses are always promises yet to come.
Angela comes back into the kitchen with a smile on her face. She reaches into apron pocket and pulls out a small bottle, sprinkles on a few drops and mixes them in. She hands Maura a new spoon and crosses her arms.
Maura takes a taste and her eyes widen. "You added some type of pepper, didn't you?"
Angela nodded. "I'm experimenting with different levels of heat, so lately I am using cayenne. What do you think?"
"Oh, I do like it."
"Ok, then, we're ready to start piping in the filler. Jane, can you finish up the potato salad?"
"I'm on it, Ma."
Angela fills a piping bag with with the yolk mixture and shows Maura how to twirl the tip a little to give it a swirl top. Maura picks it up quickly and is happily applying her knew skill. Angela gets a casserole dish out and the deviled egg container and soon the food is finished, packed and they are on their way to Korsak's cookout.
A short time later, the ladies arrive to find Frankie and Barry already there, cold beers in hand.
"Hey, Ma, let me help you with those." Frankie reaches for the deviled eggs.
"Don't you mean 'let me put those right in front of me'?" Angels raises her eyebrow.
"Ma, can I help it that you make the BEST deviled eggs and I love them?" Frankie flashes Angela his trademark grin and she melts.
"Yo, Frost. What's all this?" Jane is looking at the table covered in a festive red checked tablecloth with chips and dip, a veggie platter, shrimp with cocktail sauce and a cooler filled with Duval beer.
"Frankie and I decided we could bring some healthier appetizers along with the usual when we heard that Vince's hamburgers are ground sirloin."
"I have a couple of turkey burgers and veggie burgers in the fridge if anyone wants options." Vince waves his spatula toward the house.
The next couple of hours are filled with eating and story telling. The detectives share funny stories of the tricks they play on one another.
"Remember when we glued all of Crowe's pencils to the inside of his drawer?"
Frost laughs. "Well, I may have 'bumped' into the power cable of his computer just enough so it wouldn't start up. He called Tech and had to wait 2 hours until they came. He had to do all his paperwork by hand." Everyone is laughing.
Vince looks over at Jane. "Janey, do you know how to start a fire?"
Jane winks at Maura. "I sure do."
Vince rolls his eyes. "A real fire, Jane?"
Jane laughs. "Of course. Where are the supplies?"
Vince points over to his shed where there is a pile of wood stacked. "Ok, in the shed are some matches and kindle. The fire ring is over there."
"It doesn't seem cool enough to build a fire." Maura checks the temperature on her smartphone.
Vince grins at Maura. "Doc, it is the traditional way to end a cookout and it is also for our desserts."
"Oh, thank you for the clarification." Maura is clicking on her smartphone.
"Maura, stop searching what desserts can be cooked with a campfire."
"How did you know?"
"I know you. Come help me."
Frankie gets up. "Hey Korsak, I brought along a jarts game. Want me to set it up?"
"Sure, I used to love jarts as a kid!"
"There's been some changes, old man."
"What do you mean, 'changes'? And quit the old man bs, you wet diaper you."
Frankie starts setting up the rings and hands Vince the bag that contains the jarts. Vince pulls out the rounded, weighted jarts.
"Oh, what the hell are these things?"
"I believe the public got tired of going to the hospital for bodily injures sustained by the medal sharp ones." Barry chimes in as he walks over.
"Hmph. Bad aiming whimps."
Teams of Frankie and Barry are going against Angela and Vince. Jane and Maura will play the winner. Frankie and Vince stand aside as their partners take their shots. Frankie points to the activity across the street.
"What's going on over there?"
Vince looks over. "Oh, some major corporations made some donations and others offered to match to build a garden and playscape area for the neighborhood to enjoy. Let me tell you, they are working like dogs to get it done."
Frankie nods. "Looks good so far. It's going to be a great asset to the neighborhood."
The teams continue to play, Vince and Angela getting used to the bounce of the new jarts. It is close, but they beat out the 'boys'.
Jane and Maura walk over. "We'll show you how it's done. Don't let the fire burn out."
Maura taps Jane on the shoulder and leans up to whisper in her ear, "I don't know how it's done Jane."
Jane kisses her cheek. "You are going to stand on this side and throw to that ring. Watch how Vince and I do it first, then you calculate the flight trajectory. Don't forget to add in the bouncibility factor."
Maura is nodding. Applying scientific measurement always calmed Maura, made her feel more in control.
The game begins. Maura feels the weight of her jart, looks at the wings, drops it on the ground to test the bounce and wets her finger and raises it to test the wind. Angela decides to give her a little nudge.
"Maura, dear. It's only a game. Throw it!"
Maura jumps and throws the jart. Vince and Jane jump out of the way. "Sorry!"
It's a rough start for the women, but they tie the other team with Vince holding the last throw. Vince concentrates, pulls back his arm and tosses the jart. Everyone holds their breadth as it sails through the air, bounces and lands within the very edge of the circle. Vince bumps his fist in the air and his chest puffs out. Jane slaps him on the back.
"Good job, Korsak."
Angela rubs her hands together. "Who's ready for some S'Mores?"
Maura smiles. "I've read about S'Mores!"
"But have you ever tasted one or make your own?"
"Of course not. Mother thought they were unnecessary sugar."
"I'm sure she did, but you are in for a treat!"
Angela brings out the bag filled with marshmallows, chocolate candy bars and honey graham crackers. Vince hands out marshmallow skewers.
"Ok, Maura. Some people like to burn their marshmallow, so they hold it in the flame until it catches fire, then blow it out."
Maura wrinkles her nose at this description and shakes her head.
Jane continues, "I, on the other hand, like to slowly rotate my marshmallow until it is a golden brown all around." Maura smiles and nods.
Everyone gathers their supplies and stick their skewers near the fire.
Jane explains to Maura, "You split your graham cracker in half, put a piece of chocolate on that half. When your marshmallow is still hot and gooey, you put it on the chocolate have and press down with the other half. Ours are done, ready?"
They walk over to their graham crackers and squish the hot marshmallow down,
"Now wait a just a bit, the heat of the marshmallow will melt the candy bar a little. Ok. Try it."
Maura takes a bite and closes her eyes. "Oh, Jane, that is so good!"
Jane laughs. "That good, huh?"
Maura happily nods.
Hey all! Happy August! I had one written for August 5th - Works Like A Dog Day, but my computer ate it! I tried to recreate it as best as possible in this one and then add more for National S'Mores Day. I hope you enjoy the update.
My love to Belgium
