Waking up the morning after the wedding didn't really feel different. As you'd said in your vows, you and Ichigo were getting married, but the two of you had already been living like you were for months. You even had two adoptive children. Still, though, your wife seems to have a glow surrounding her as she goes about her morning.
Your partner does everything in her usual manner. First, a shower, because Ichigo loved to bathe in the warm water. Next, someone in the kitchen was kind enough to prepare breakfast for the two of you, so you ate together on the small round table in the corner by the window. Bacon, eggs, and pancakes with syrup are a simple but welcome treat from toast or bagels.
Ichigo admitted to being a bit sore from your activities the night prior after breakfast and returned to soak in the tub in hope of alleviating the ailment. Unsurprisingly she chose to add a bit of bubble bath, and was soon covered in the foamy substance. With her arms propped up on the edges of the tub with another of her books, she looked totally relaxed.
By the time Ichigo is settled it's almost 0900 and you've yet to hear anything from the girls' room. Going to check on them, you push open the door to see that Asuna had crawled into her sister's bed at some point in the night and is now sprawled out completely. Asada has the misfortune of scrunching herself onto the very edge of the bed to avoid being thrown off by her sister.
Seeing the girls wrapped up the way they are causes you to smile. For how mature and highly skilled they are, it's nice to see them show moments of being normal kids as well. Their childhood is far more loving and supportive than your own had been at the Garden, and it is your goal to keep it that way. Asuna and Asada would grow up knowing they had a support system they could turn to at any time, be it you, Ichigo, or any of your friends.
With nothing left to do you pull open the balcony door and step out into the breeze. Rather than close it, you leave the door open to allow the salty air into the room holding your sleeping daughters, thinking it would be good for them. A chair sits on the balcony and is just tall enough for you to see over the stone railing and watch the village of Haven as it goes about its day.
After engaging in people-watching for the better part of forty-five minutes, you hear rustling in the bedroom behind you. Upon further investigation, it seems Asada has finally been awoken, thanks to her sister forcing her off the bed. The seven-year-old is on her feet when you reach her and rubbing her backside.
"Owie," she grumbles before glaring at her sister.
You sweep the child off her feet and assault her with kisses. "Good morning!"
"Stop it! Stop it!" Asada giggles, trying to push you away.
"Nope!" you shout, peppering her cheeks with more.
"Ichigo, help me!" the girl yells.
Knowing that your wife is still in the bath and more than likely wouldn't come after hearing the laughter, you continue, saying, "No one can help you now, you're mine!"
The silver-haired girl continues to squirm in your arms. "(Y/N), let me go!"
You stop. "Drop you? If you insist!"
"No!" she yells as she begins her second plunge of the morning. Instead of the floor, however, she drops onto the soft blankets of her sibling's bed. Asada sits up and glances to either side, confused as to why she hadn't hit the hardwood slats.
"Feel better now?" you ask, looming over her.
Your daughter pouts by crossing her arms and looking away from you. "That was mean."
"You're right," you agree. "But I'll do it again if you don't give me my good morning hug."
Slowly, Asada slides off the bed. She walks around it to where you stand with open arms. At the last moment she begins to sprint and jumps at you. While you hadn't anticipated the move, the fifty-pound girl isn't enough to throw you terribly off balance.
"You sure are full of energy this morning," you whisper. "It's not like you."
Asada slips out of your arms and places her feet on the floor. Then she wraps her little arms around you as best she can in a hug.
"Good morning."
"Good morning," you reply.
"I love you," she continues.
You plant a kiss on the top of her head. "I love you too."
Your heartfelt moment is interrupted by a tug on your pant leg. It is accompanied by a sleepy voice saying, "Too loud."
"Sister," Asada pulls the covers of her bed back and places a hand on Asuna's back. "It is time to wake up."
"Don't wanna," the half-asleep twin moans.
You take a seat on the bed. Coincidentally, it happens to be on top of the tired girl.
"Ow! Ow! Ow! Get off! Get off! Get off!" Asuna screeches.
"Do you hear something?" you ask Asada.
She shakes her head and climbs into your lap. "Nope!"
Asuna continues to kick and scream as you and her sister talk about your plans for the day ahead. It doesn't take long before footsteps coming from the room next door catch your attention. A moment later Ichigo, holding a towel over her naked form and looking very concerned for her daughter's wellbeing, appears.
"Where's Asuna?" your partner demands, looking feverishly around the room for the child calling out her name.
Asada looks up at you and then back to Ichigo and shrugs. "We don't know."
"You don't kn…" Ichigo's voice trails off when she sees the blonde hair and the arms and legs flailing about. "Get off of her!"
With Asada in your arms you stand, allowing Asuna to slip out from under you. The flaxen-haired girl runs to her mother and hides behind her.
"They were sitting on me Ichigo! It really hurt!"
"You were–"
"Quiet!" Ichigo glares at you.
You fall silent.
Ichigo bends down to look Asuna in the eye. "Are you alright, sweetie?"
The twin has begun to cry, but they are clearly crocodile tears. Asuna is forcing them out but Ichigo, in her panicked state, has taken the bait hook, line, and sinker.
"I'm okay," she whimpers.
Ichigo pats her head. "The bath is warm, why don't you go get yourself cleaned up? There's something I want to show you when you're done."
Asuna nods and Ichigo turns her back. Before leaving, Asuna sticks out her tongue and pulls her lower eyelid down on the right side. You can't help but be somewhat amused by her, spinning Ichigo against you despite the lecture that is sure to be coming.
"Why don't you go with her?" you tell Asada, placing her on the ground. The silver-haired child wordlessly leaves the room after squeezing your hand. Ichigo gives her a warm smile as she goes, but it fades as soon as she's gone.
Ichigo taps her foot impatiently, waiting for an explanation. Her hair is still dripping, with the droplets bursting on the floor as she does. You take a seat on Asada's bed.
"It was just–"
"I don't want to hear it," Ichigo cuts you off before you can even begin to defend yourself. "I jump out of the bath, grab the nearest towel and run naked through the room, terrified that something is happening to our children and what do I find? My husband sitting on our daughter's back laughing and carrying on, setting a bad example for our other daughter who is in his lap."
Ichigo sighs.
"I know you were trying to have fun, but honestly, (Y/N), you could have hurt her. Asuna is a little girl. You can't play rough with her. You're more than three times her size."
"She was never in any danger," you assure Ichigo. "I wouldn't do anything that could hurt the girls, you know that."
With a wave of your hand you motion Ichigo over. "Come on, I'll show you."
You lay face down on the bed. Ichigo looks at you expectantly.
"Go ahead, sit on me."
"If this is some kind of weird fantasy of yours, I'm not playing along," Ichigo chastises you.
"It'll prove that Asuna was fine," you tell her.
Reluctantly, Ichigo faces the window and seats herself on your back. You can feel the pressure of her weight but the mattress and box spring give beneath you with a series of creaks. Ichigo is noticeable but not painful.
"I told you."
"You're right, sitting on you isn't that bad." The pressure is relieved, but before you can roll out of the bed it returns much stronger. Ichigo's voice is more distant now.
"How about now? Does it hurt yet?"
You cough. "What… are you… doing?"
"Standing on your back," she answers. "I thought perhaps that my full weight might have more of an effect on you."
"You're light… as a feather, my love," you choke out.
"That's a good answer."
There is a thump as Ichigo steps off your back and hops to the floor. The air rushes back into your lungs. You sit up in the bed as Ichigo is on her way out of the room. After a moment to catch your breath, you follow her.
Ichigo disappears into the master bath as you enter the bedroom, so the chase continues. When you arrive in the bathroom Ichigo is instructing the girls to finish bathing quickly so she can teach them their lesson. You have no idea what this "lesson" is going to be about, which leads you to hang around and find out. You've got nothing better to do anyway.
Before the girls get out you go over to Ichigo, who has just changed into some comfortable clothes. Her back is to you and you wrap your arms around her waist. She bristles a little at the contact.
"I'm sorry," you say, burying your face between her neck and shoulder. "Asuna was fine the whole time. I was keeping some of my weight on the floor. I'd never hurt her, you know that."
Your words seem to have soothed Ichigo, in addition to her having had a little time to calm down from the adrenaline. She relaxes into you and puts her hands on yours. "I know. It was just upsetting, suddenly hearing her yelling like that. It just got me really worked up."
Leaning over her shoulder, you give her a quick kiss on the cheek as an apology. She returns the favor and the both of you smile, knowing everything's okay again.
Five minutes later, Asuna and Asada sit in front of the mirror with Ichigo hunched over behind them. On the counter, Ichigo has spread out her entire collection of makeup. The young girls' eyes are aglow seeing the shades, colors, blushes and contours, not to mention the lipstick.
"Do we really get to use this?" Asuna asks, barely able to contain her excitement. Her little hands fidget with one another as her eyes dart back and forth from one item to the next.
Ichigo's smile is reflected in the mirror. "You do. While you girls are my perfect little angels, I think it's time that I taught you a bit about makeup."
"Why do we need to know about it?" the silver-haired twin cocks her head, seeming somewhat confused.
"Makeup is an important weapon in any girl's arsenal," Ichigo replies.
Still confused, Asuna says, "Like a knife or a gun?"
"Well, yes," Ichigo chuckles. "Those are both important weapons to have in an arsenal. Makeup is more like a tool in your toolbox. It can help you feel more confident, highlight your natural beauty, and promote routine cleansing, which is good for your skin."
The girls' mother leans down to whisper in their ears. "It makes the boys pay attention to you too..."
"Oh," they say in unison. Both sets of eyes stare at you in the mirror. Without uncrossing your arms, you give a little wave.
"There are lots of different kinds of makeup," Ichigo says and begins the lesson.
"The most important ones are the foundation..." she motions to a pump bottle that is caramel crème in color.
"...The blush..." which is held in a small compact.
"...Lipstick..." she twists a tube to show the pretty pink inside.
"...And eyeliner," she finishes, pulling out the pencil from its case before returning it.
Ichigo reaches past the girls and turns on the faucets. "Before you ever put any makeup on you always need to make sure your face is clean. If you don't it will hold icky stuff on your skin and make you uncomfortable."
Over the next few minutes, Ichigo shows Asuna and Asada the proper way to prepare their skin. First, the girls wash their faces with warm water and soap. After they've finished the cleansing, a bit of moisturizer is added to promote healthy skin.
"Once you've washed up you can start with the primer," Ichigo tells the girls as she squirts a bit onto each of their index fingers. "Start by rubbing it on your face starting with your nose and spread it out over your cheeks. It shouldn't take more than a pea-sized drop to cover your entire face."
Asuna listens carefully to Ichigo and slowly runs her fingers over her face to cover the whole thing. Asada has a bit more trouble with the concept. She succeeds in spreading out the primer but leaves several large streaks. Ichigo assists her in smoothing them out and they proceed to the next stage.
Using a wedge, Ichigo applies a little bit of foundation as an example. "Foundation should always be close to the same color as your skin. See how this is just a bit darker than mine?"
The girls watch as Ichigo dabs the wedge against her cheeks.
"See?" she smiles at them.
They nod and take turns patting the wedge against their skin. Asuna is a little too zealous and cakes the foundation on a little too thickly. Asada proves her better understanding by lightly dabbing the foundation on her cheeks and nose in such a way that it's much less noticeable.
While her children work, Ichigo continues to explain. "Makeup is always to make you look prettier, to enhance your natural beauty. If you're using too much of it then people won't see you for how gorgeous you already are. Remember that light is right."
With the groundwork laid it is time for the final step of the facial process. Ichigo hands each sibling a compact and walks them through the application of blush.
"It makes your cheeks rosy," she says. "Boys love it when they think you're blushing because of something they said. It makes them feel like they're doing something right."
"It looks like I'm glowing," Asuna gasps at her reflection.
You've been watching the entire process, so you know that Asada is speaking to you when she says, "Does it really make me look cuter?"
"Sweetheart, you're so pretty I don't know what to say," is your answer.
A real blush covers the silver-haired twin's face as her sister shouts, "What about me?! What about me?!"
"I don't know," you scratch your chin. "I think that you might not be getting as much out of it."
The golden one's reflection sticks out her tongue. "Meanie!"
You wink before Ichigo recollects their attention after she offers a quick giggle.
"This pen is for eyeliner," she holds up the black instrument. "Trace over your eyebrows like so, being careful not to push too hard or miss any spots."
Watching Asuna and Asada attempt to use the pencil is a treat. Each of them can write or draw without an issue, but something about using only one hand and doing it in a mirror on themselves makes the task harder. Naturally, they struggle to keep the black within the confines of their eyelashes, but for a first attempt it isn't half bad.
Eyeshadow and mascara follow with similar issues. Asuna struggles to understand the crimp for curling her eyelashes and requires Ichigo's help to finally figure out the proper way to hold it and the correct amount to curl. Her sister crimps the lashes just fine but is unable to use the mascara brush with only her reflection in the mirror. Once again, her mother comes to the rescue and guides her through the motion.
Ichigo claps, looking exceptionally proud of her girls. "You both look wonderful. Now, it's time for my favorite part." She lifts the lid to her lipstick case. Inside is a variety of nearly twenty different shades.
"You can pick any of them you like," she offers. Rather than jumping in, the twins watch to see which Ichigo selects. The woman takes a moment to consider the options and the base color of her foundation for the day before taking a light shade of pink. She purses her lips and runs the lipstick over her upper and lower lip in succession. After she's finished, she presses them together to complete the process and replaces the tube.
Both the girls reach for it, but Asada is faster. As a result, Asuna has to wait as her sister puts on her lipstick first. One would think she was being forced to watch the most boring experience of her life as she climbs in and out of her chair and paces the room, all in a matter of sixty seconds.
You let out a low whistle after everyone is finished. "Man, am I lucky or what?"
Ichigo pecks your lips. "I think so."
You kneel to speak with your daughters at eye level. "How do you feel?"
"Pretty," Asuna answers, playing with the hem of her skirt.
Asada tilts her head from side to side. "I can feel it sitting on my face, but if it makes me look better, I think I like it."
"I think it makes you both look like the most beautiful little girls in the world, and that I am very lucky to be your father," you smile.
"Hey girls," Ichigo says, "go stand next to him."
The twins do as they are asked.
Ichigo brandishes the camera she just picked up, readying it with a grin. "Good, smile!"
There are a series of flashes as Ichigo takes pictures of you and the girls.
"Now, kiss him."
Asuna and Asada kiss each of your cheeks as the image is immortalized.
The impromptu photoshoot continues for almost half an hour, with pictures taken of you and the girls, you and Ichigo, Ichigo and the girls, and just the girls.
When you're finally finished everyone is tired from laughing and it's nearly time for lunch, despite having never left the suite.
"Come along, ladies," you usher them out the door. "What good is getting dressed up for if I don't get to show you off? Now everyone gets to see that I'm the luckiest guy in the world."

Several days later, a meeting of the rebellion's leadership is called. The topic of discussion is presented by Haven's resident AI to the group surrounding the holotable. An orange display shows a region by the sea, highlighting the area. A forest covers the northwestern corner of the map while waves lap against the coast to the south east. The only other notable feature is a mountain range, where one peak stands above all the others.
"I have located VIRM," Freya's avatar stands near the head of the table with her hands behind her back. The Viking woman looks pleased with her success. "It is located exactly 267.1 miles from Haven beneath this mountain."
"What can you tell us about where it's hiding?" you ask.
The holotable zooms in on the mountain range. Buildings begin to make themselves visible, and by the time the process is complete it is clear that an entire base rests outside the mountain. It is only logical to assume more waits within.
"This facility is located on the western side of the most southern island near the remains of an industrial port city. Unfortunately, I am unable to conduct any deep surface scans or access blueprints. All of the information I can provide will be about what is outside of the mountain."
Hachi scratches his chin. "There is something in the mountain, then?"
Freya nods. "While I cannot tell you what is inside, I can assure you something is. The buildings you see outside cannot possibly contain all of the servers VIRM requires to operate."
"It doesn't matter what it is," Zero Two bites her nail. "We've got to get rid of it all."
Ichigo eyes the defenses. "This is going to be tough. They have multiple layers of fortifications, not including the defenders. The Nines will probably show up too if they aren't there waiting for us."
"We'd all best be prepared," you agree with her. "Everyone should expect this to be as difficult as the Garden or worse. We need to do what we can now to minimize the potential risks and reduce casualties. With that in mind, let's get to work."

The fresh air did good to clear Hiro's mind after the morbid planning meeting. An assault had been drawn up, but it was still risky, for a lot of people. He doesn't have time to sulk, however, if he wishes to keep from being pulled up the cliff face by his partner.
"Darling!" Zero Two shouts from above him with glee. "If you don't start moving, I'll leave you behind!"
Leaving him was only partially accurate, but it's enough to refocus Hiro. His wife is already a good fifteen feet up from the beach and he would prevent her from going further if he didn't get moving. The rope connecting them was only thirty feet long, and with Zero Two's pace it would quickly be pulled taut.
"Zero Two," Hiro begins to climb the rock, but still feels the slack growing shorter. "Slow down! Please!"
The pink-haired girl only laughs. "Come on, darling, gotta catch me!"
They continue like this to the top of the sheer face some two hundred feet above. Zero Two is the first to arrive, but she waits patiently with her feet dangling over the edge for her partner to catch up. She offers Hiro a hand as he hoists himself onto the ledge.
The sun is on its return trip and currently at their backs as the pair enjoys the view and breeze. Zero Two is the first to snake her fingers into Hiro's, her assertiveness still outweighing his passiveness. Hiro turns to look at her and blushes. He doesn't turn away like he would have in the past at the sight of his bride in her black leggings and sports bra, but the feeling he shouldn't stare causes him to look away after several seconds.
Zero Two giggles and scoots closer. "It's really cute when you get embarrassed like that."
"I… yeah," Hiro rubs his neck. "You're so beautiful that I wish I could look at you forever… but, staring is rude."
Hiro feels himself being pulled to the side as Zero Two places her arm around him and guides his head to rest against her shoulder.
"I know you're worried," she says. "The battle will be hard, but you don't need to be afraid. No one is stronger than we are together. Not Alpha, or Psi, or anyone. We're building a place for ourselves, and one day, we'll travel the world together."
Hiro relaxes and allows himself to really relax into his partner. She's strong and sturdy, always ready when he needs someone to lean on. Zero Two was always playful and outgoing, but she has a softer side. It's this side to her that he admires the most. Nothing scares her. She's not bursting with pride but full of confidence. That confidence was something he often lacked.
"I'm lucky I found you," Hiro whispers.
Zero Two lays her head on his. "Not as lucky as I am. Darling, I love you."
Hiro squeezes her hand. "Zero Two, I love you too."

The married couple of Hiro and Zero Two are not the only members of the resistance to be feeling the pressure of the upcoming mission. Deep below the town of Haven in the rebel base, Miku and Zorome are locked in intense training. Miku is a blur of fist, feet, and fiery red hair as she works with her partner. Zorome plays the dual role of coach and punching bag, wearing a pair of mitts while struggling to keep up with her movements.
Ever since her transformation, when she felt stressed, Miku's release had been working out. Beating the tar out of someone or something was surprisingly cathartic, and it kept her in shape as an added bonus. It doesn't take long for the girl to tire out Zorome with her barrage of attacks, so she refocuses her efforts on a training dummy.
Right straight, left cross, sidestep, roundhouse. The dummy falls to the ground and Miku goes with it. As they land, her knee crushes the dummy's windpipe. Had this been a real opponent they would be gasping for air if they were lucky, and already unconscious or dead if they weren't.
All the moves she'd used against Zorome and the dummy belonged to boxing, save for the kick and her use of her knee. Both were illegal in the old-world sport, but now there were no such rules. Mixing and matching parts from all of the different martial arts and fighting techniques she'd learned made for some scary combinations.
"Here." Miku looks up to find Zorome standing over her. The young man offers a squirt bottle containing water, and a towel. She stands before accepting the refreshment and leading him to a nearby bench in the middle of the room.
Once seated, Miku rests her head on the blonde's shoulder. "You know you're gross right now, right?"
"Deal with it," she replies, staring at him through the floor-to-ceiling mirror on the nearby wall.
After a few moments of silence, Miku's breathing settles down. Zorome speaks again. "You're nervous, aren't you?"
Miku glances up at her lover, steely conviction in her eyes. "I don't get scared, not anymore."
Zorome ponders for several seconds. "You don't have to be scared to be nervous. You just seem worked up is all. And… you know… I don't like seeing you that way."
The boy is mumbling by the end of his sentence to avoid incriminating himself.
Water drips from Miku's lips as she downs another swig. The cap pops with a hiss as she seals it once more. Zorome watches as the redhead circles behind him before throwing her arms around his neck and placing her chin on his shoulder.
"It's really sweet that you think about me so much," Miku kisses his cheek.
With a grumble he says, "Yeah, whatever. Don't let it go to your head."
"Oh, I won't," she grins. Miku, who had shifted her hold to being under Zorome's arms, lifts off with her feet and back, pulling him along. The unsuspecting boy hits the mat behind them face first as the suplex is completed and the wind is knocked out of him. In an instant, Miku is atop him restraining his hands.
"Ow, damn it! Let me go!" he wails for all in the empty room to hear.
Miku whispers in his ear. "This is payback for two nights ago when I said I wanted to just go to sleep. I only need to practice for a little longer. You don't mind, do you?"
Zorome grunts something unintelligible as the redhead continues to work on her holds. The moment she loosens her grip, the tables turn as Zorome pounces on her. This starts a wrestling match that would eventually lead to more. Miku's tense attitude and Zorome's concern melted away in the presence of one another. For a while at least, everything was right.
Fortunately for the young lovers, a certain AI had been watching. Freya ensured Miku and Zorome wouldn't be bothered before quietly excusing herself from the room's surveillance system. All of her human compatriots deserved some comfort before the brewing storm blew in.

Naomi and Ikuno share a single room.
It wasn't that way from the start. When she arrived at Haven from Franxx's facility, Naomi was afforded her own space to live. The room was nice, with some windows and places for her things. It was great to be back with her old friends, yes, but there were still times when she wanted to be alone. And for that, it did its job well.
However, that changed as she got closer and closer to Ikuno again. Instead of being reclusive, she'd pay the raven-haired girl visits instead. She enjoyed the company. At the time she didn't know why, but she'd always want to visit the girl instead of being by herself. Her room was bigger and more comfortable too, which made it a good spot to hang out together in. It had a larger bed for relaxing and a balcony with a great view of the endless forests below.
Now, Naomi sprawls herself out peacefully on top of Ikuno's bed, her girlfriend resting her head on her stomach. The balcony is open, letting a cool breeze waft through the room. After the briefing, it was very calming for the both of them.
"I wish I never had to leave," Ikuno says to the ceiling.
Naomi adjusts her position and takes a purple lock in her hand. "Hmm?"
A hint of red dusts Ikuno's cheeks as she looks over. "The mission. I don't really want to leave. I'd rather just stay like this."
"I think so too," Naomi says with a soft smile. "This is perfect. And you know how I hate it when you leave."
Ikuno's hand works its way to Naomi's and she gives it a squeeze when they meet. "I don't want to either. Especially not this time." A little of the warm light in her eyes gets dimmer. "That base isn't going to be easy. We're going to lose a lot of people trying to take it."
"I know," Naomi says with a sigh. "And I worry, too. Not just for you, for all our friends. I don't want APE taking anyone else from me, not like they almost did before."
Sitting up, Ikuno draws her girlfriend into a hug, which she returns. "You know I'm coming back, right? I'm not leaving you alone. We can do this. It's going to be okay." Naomi can feel the grim determination coming from her. It's comforting, even if she wasn't crazy worried in the first place. Regardless, her heart warms.
"I'm just so lucky to have you, Ikuno."
The girl's eyes soften, and she pulls Naomi into a quick kiss. They lean into it, enjoying it, feeling the closeness it brings. It's something they never tire of.
For Ikuno especially, they had never truly entertained thoughts of a relationship like the one they have now. Ikuno was too withdrawn, and Naomi had lost her squad. But once they'd found one another again it was fitting for them to find comfort in one another, and neither of them was willing to lose the love they now share.
Resting their foreheads together, the two sit there in the tranquil breeze, again back to relaxing alongside one another. "I love you, Naomi. Never forget that."
"I won't," she says with a smile, running her thumb against Ikuno's cheek. "I don't think I could if I tried."
After another few minutes, Ikuno hops off the bed. Naomi follows her with her eyes and shoots her a questioning glance.
"Well, I want to go grab more books from the library," says Ikuno, motioning to the stack of completed ones on her desk. "I finished the last one this morning. I figured we could read together some more if I got a few more. You coming?"
Naomi crawls across the bed and gives her a quick peck on the lips, then a smile. "Of course I will."
