Chapter 2: The Junelle Family
So let's get this straight once more.
I died and was reborn in the fairy tail universe as Roy Junelle.
I know, crazy right? Which is why I made a solemn vow to myself.
DO NOT INTERACT WITH CANON CHARACTERS!
It's one thing if I know how the story ends but with half-assed future information, I'll most likely screw it up than helping. They are likely to win anyway and if they don't, I'll die by either in the hands of a human-hating dragon or a Loco Dark Mage, so going in hiding seemed to be a pointless plan.
If me getting close to them somehow changed that inevitable winning, then I rather not meet them.
That doesn't stop me from learning magic.
Magic! Any boy's dream of having. Try telling me to my face you never once imagine yourself using magic, and I got the winning ticket of being born in a fantasy world. Though you need to, you know, die before you get to join the lottery.
This wish of mine, however, leads me to the first question of whether or not I was born with any magic. Whatever god that brings me here should at least make me able to use magic because I'll be damn if my fantasy is right in front of me, and yet I can't use it. That would be too cruel for words.
Now how should I bring up magic when everyone in the house that seemed clueless about it. From what I could tell in the show, there's almost 100% certainty for anyone to use magic if they're parents or relatives use one. Lucy, Natsu, Urtear, and Gray are a few examples. Since no one said a lick of the word magic, I could only assume that the family has zero magicians.
Just my luck.
Should I just let it out that I want to learn magic out of the blue, that would be suspicious though. On the other hand, if I could use magic from instinct alone then dad would hire a teacher the next day I'm sure, but that would mean I have to assume I could do magic and I'm not even sure how to use it. I don't want accidentally use some sort of Earthquake Magic and topple the whole house down. That might just get me banned from magic. The only character I know that could do magic without learning would be Erza, and she could be considered a prodigy.
Goddammit, somebody show this little boy some magic and help his dream, would you?!
Alas, no one took heed of my silent wish.
Well... enough with the dramatics! Seeing as the problem I've never seen or heard magic is that I'm cooped up in this ridiculous large mansion, so after a little whining to my dad, I finally could go outside in this new hometown of mine. Hey, don't judge me! There's no shame in acting what I currently am, it's faster than just try to argue anyway.
Oh, and the town?
It. Was. Amazing!
In my past life, I never really go as far as the neighboring town so I never went to too many places. I'm just so glad I'm in a toddler's body because being this excited as an adult could be embarrassing.
For one, Margarett Town is similar to Venice. They have one major river separating the town in two sectors, but they are many branches from the river across from it, making the boat as its main transportation. Rows of medieval-style stone buildings; from simple houses, level-stories apartment, to a majestic architecture of clocktower. Multiple bridges connecting one cobbled stone street to another. The central plaza with its proud towering fountain of Marfarett Town that holds up a White Bell Tree. If Magnolia has the Rainbow Cherry Blossom, Margarett has a tree of Bellflowers pour out an abundance of water in its blooming season. Maybe that's why the town is also called Adam's Ale. Looking at the majestic Fountain Tree when I barely reached my butler's knee, I felt a warmth tingling thing in my chest I could only associate as pride, it grew more and more as I watched people shopping at the market, older children's playing while avoiding someone's stray chickens, and the content smiles of the people that thrives this town.
Damn, it's barely been a day and I'm loving my new home.
What made me gawk the most was the fact this town is the home for the guild Lamia Scale.
I certainly did not see that coming.
Though some of the canon characters have and will join the guild, I'm having second thoughts on meeting them since they were only supporting characters.
Wait...
Bad! Bad Roy! No second thoughts! I repeat, do not associate with the canons!
I shook my head and hold hands more tightly with Tornilious, my caretaker and all-time favorite butler. And he is the most chill and badass man I know in this world. Not that there's anything wrong with all the other servants there, but they tend to be a bit... mushy. I know they're all good people, my dad wanted people with the best skill and character so they could be a good role model for my brother and me. Yet, that doesn't mean their tendency to pinch my cheeks, disregard my words as child rambling, and make random cooing noises every single time that almost had me pulled my hair out in frustration. It took that moment for me to realize that being a child has their ups and downs too.
Not Torri though (that's my nickname for him), despite still treating me like a child, he always expects me to be better without underestimating the limits of my intelligence. Answers everything I ask without the baby talk unless I needed it to be dumb down. Never spoiled more than the normal threshold, and willing to let me do my things without help if I didn't ask for it.
What made him a badass butler though was the fact he never lost his cool. One time, an idiot friend of dad's gifted me a tiger (which admittedly is cool) for my birthday, and the beautiful creature almost cause the guests to riot if not for Torri staring at her to submission. You might think I'm exaggerating but it's the truth.
I knew I wanted to be the kind of guy who could stare down a wild beast capable of shredding your throat but still looks suave even while carrying a ton of groceries on hand.
As our errand was coming to a close, my eyes quickly caught the eye-catching gothic-style building; unlike the rest of the simple stone houses and establishments, it was larger, around four stories tall, and has a fancy statue beside the door instead of a welcoming mat. Then my gaze locked on the sign hanging above the door, the words 'Lamia Scale' spelled in cursive, and my jaw dropped. Almost not believing what I saw, I pulled on Torri's sleeve and pointed at it. "Tornilious, what is that?"
Torri followed where my finger was pointing and answer promptly, "That Young Master is our proud magic guild of Margarett Town, Lamia Scale."
I gulped, "Magic guild?"
"Yes, it's a place for people to offer work while mages could choose their works to gain money."
The answer managed to broke my shock and latched on the words I've been dying to hear, "What are mages?"
"Well... mages are people that could use magic, there are only 10% here in Fiore so there aren't that many."
"Can I be a mage too? I want to use magic!"
Torri gave me something akin to a sad or pity smile. It was a long shot I know, with my family having no history with magic that I am aware but hey! I'm reincarnated in another universe, surely I'm a special case. "I'm afraid not everyone can choose to be a mage Roy" wow, she said my name meaning she's trying to make me listen carefully. "Only those born with magic could become one and we don't know if you can use magic"
"How do I know if I could use it then?" That's one of the things I'm genuinely interested, how do you tell a kid who could use magic or not.
"Simple Young Master, come...let's go to the guild shall we?"
Eh... wait, what? We're going to the guild? Why? I'm not prepared for this!
While my body loses any strength, Torri just kept dragging me toward the guild. This is so not what I have in mind. Seeing I have no excuse in store, I let myself be dragged toward the building that had a giant sign that said 'LAMIA SCALE' and statues of a mermaid between the entrance. I took a deep breath before Torri opened the door and ushered me toward where I suspect the job desk.
Okay, to describe the guild. It was a lot more formal and organized compared to FT. While they look like a pub, Lamia Scale looked like a medieval lounge that could hold more than 200 people. There was a group of people sitting and standing around the fireplace, another group was laughing aloud that what it looks like a bar, there was even a book corner though I could bet they have their own library unseen to the guests. There at the job desk, I was met by a young man I suspect barely reach his 20s, he had unkempt jet black hair, bright brown squinty eyes, he had a sort of babyface but had a long scar from his cheek down to his chin and was wearing a pair of glasses.
"Hello, how can I help you?" The man asked.
Torri match his smile with his own, "Yes, I am a butler from the Jurenelle Family and this the second heir, Roy Jurenelle, he is interested to know if he's capable of magic"
The man looked slightly shocked at the word Jurenelle. My family is rich and famous around town, having long history since the founding of Fiore, being one of the few nobles in this country. It is said we even have royal blood within us.
So... yeah... that's just how important my family is.
I had thought I was rich because my dad is some kind of businessman like Lucy's father, didn't think I was a noble instead.
The man told us to wait and went toward a side room while yelling for his Master. Five seconds later and an old hag came out, her hand twirling and behind was the glasses-man, helplessly being twirl around.
No doubt I'm meeting none other than Ooba babasaama.
She has wrinkled skin, small eyes, and bony hands. She has stretched earlobes and has long gray hair tied up in a huge bun with three layers. She was wearing a violet dress underneath her blue robe and studded gold bracelet on both hands. Our eyes then met and she gave me a kind of stern glare even though her eyes were squinted into a thin line. "So...it's no joke the Young Master from the Jurenelle Family wants to know if he could use magic," she said it loud and bold that the rest of the guild became quiet and were focused on us.
Not liking the attention, I hid my face behind Varlyn's hand but briefly nodded to answer her.
"Hmph, the Jurenelle family has never had a mage for 7 generations so don't expect too much boy" she then twirled the man toward a shelf and after he gained his bearing from the dizziness, he picks a crystal ball that I suspected is a lachrima. Master Ooba babasaama then snatched the lachrima from his hands and urge me to hold it. "How old are you?" She asked suddenly.
"Four years old, madam."
"Oooh, how polite. Then you should be capable of using this, it's only a simple Light Lacrima. If you could charge it with magic then the lachrima will light itself."
That's it? And I thought it was something grand and serious. Jeez, these people are taking things too seriously because of my name.
"How do I use magic?"
Master Ooba rubs her chin as she twirled around on her heels and seemed to be thinking the simplest way to explain things enough for a child to understand. From what I could tell, magic is usually an instinctive thing so they don't really think much when using it.
"To explain simply, you have to find your container inside, the container holds your magic so once you're able to pull it out, you could then charge the lachrima. It's similar of letting out your energy while strongly wish to light up the lachrima, do you understand?" She tried explaining it carefully, and after somehow working out her words, I nodded.
"If you can use magic then I'm going to twirl!"
You're already twirling though.
My eyes began to fix at the lachrima, she said that if I have a magic container inside me, I'll have to find that first. I closed my eyes and I tried to find anything unusual that I don't usually find in my previous body. Surely focusing on that, I found a lot easier than what I imagined and eagerly pulled and let it flow throughout my body and out through my hand.
What I hadn't expected though the moment I tap on my magic, like a switch being flip, I became more aware at the ethernano around me. Like hyper-aware enough that I somehow could grasp every single mage on this guild, including those in the basement.
Is this normal? Because I have a feeling it's not.
"Well what do you know, you can use magic after all" instead of twirling herself she made few of her guild members be her twirling victim. The rest who escape lightly cheered of the young noble to have magic ability and outwardly express their surprise.
Torri looked the most surprised with his jaw dropped and eyes round like saucer plate before buffing up his chest in pride. Telling me how he can't wait to report it to Dad. I could imagine Dad being delighted from the news and would fetch the best tutor he could find.
Which is what exactly what he did after going home.
What I didn't expect the day after tomorrow was why a teenage boy, that had squared head, shiny bald head, sharp eyes, oval-shaped eyebrows and he was massive for a pre-teen. Considering he was Jura Neekis in his 14-year-old self, I'm wondering how I'm attracting a canon character and why the hell a boy barely reaching his teens is hired to tutor a four year old noble!
What kind of bullshit are you playing with me, Universe?
Oh, and remember how using magic somehow made my hypersensitive toward ethernano, well let me tell you despite being young. This young Jura has massive magic equal to his body, it's like he trains his body and magic at the same time. I can't imagine how much magic he would have in around 10 years time to become one of the 10 Saint Wizard. While I was looking at him stupidly, Jura cleared his throat and introduced himself and I did the same in my childish way. "It is an honor to be able to teach you Young Master Roy, I hope you would bare with my teaching since I'm new at this."
Okay, even more confusing, why is my dad even letting a novice teaching me?!
Jura must have caught my expression because he chuckled lightly then smiled in an understanding way. "Although I must say I would only be teaching you for 3 weeks. Mr. Crouch, your future tutor from my guild had a little accident and entrusted me to start your teaching" The tensed muscle I had relaxed at the reason, at least there's a legitimate reason because being with canon characters for too long isn't good for my heart.
"Now let's begin our lesson shall we?"
