Chapter 18 – These Last Moments
Annabeth's POV
The last three weeks were pure felicity for me.
Luke managed to get the right day offs and plot his next flight properly so that he had a three week stay in Manhattan. Having Luke stay over at my loft for a solid three weeks was different compared to having to wait for an e-mail from him for weeks as he flies around the world.
It was nice and comforting to have someone to go home to everyday. I could call out "I'm home" and have a slobbering and overly excited Rottweiler bound at me then at the same time have a kiss and a cup of hot chocolate waiting for me. At times, when he would go out to visit his apartment or have a night or day out with his friends, it felt good to have someone call out for me when he came home. Besides having someone to cuddle with and talk to besides Onion was great too.
My workload lessened or lightened up since I managed to catch up on the work I missed. I also stopped being hard on myself especially when it came to work.
Luke would also fetch me from the office or keep me company. He'd pop in and bring me lunch or some snack. Having him do that pretty much kept Percy away from the office.
Having Luke over meant that I had less time to spend with Percy. It was unsettling. From the minimum of eight hours of being together with Percy in a day, it was drastically reduced to two hours a day, sometimes even not seeing him. Of course, Percy and I still had our Sunday hangout but it would always be cut short. Percy would go to my loft for a TV series or movie marathon but he'd feel like he's the third wheel. Luke's stay had the most convenient timing I'd have to say. Percy and Rachel were doing wedding planning things, which included a lot of prenuptial photo shoots. I should have been with Percy throughout those shoots, after all I was the best woman, but Luke was always my scapegoat for not being present.
Luke. Percy. Luckily the feelings mishap was resolved and averted. Luke's stay gave me a chance to reaffirm my love for him. It was quite nice to finally settle whatever feelings I had for Percy.
"Good morning." Someone whispered in my ear, making a shiver run down my spine.
I looked up at him and smiled. "Morning."
"Oh, you're awake." He looked surprised for a moment before smiling lovingly at me.
He has been doing this every day, making sure he'd greet me. Sometimes I would feign to be asleep; he would whisper "Good morning" and kiss my forehead. In instances that I would wake up earlier than him, he would wrap his arms around my waist once I've sat up, greet me, and kiss my cheek. If I already got out of bed, he would creep up on me when I'm waiting for my coffee to be ready or watching the morning news, hug me from behind, greet me, and kiss me. Sometimes greeting me in between kisses.
He is absolutely the best boyfriend I can ask for.
I turned my back to him and wrapped his arms tighter around me, making him chuckle. I cuddled closer to him and took a deep breath of contentment. He started running his fingers tenderly through my hair. It was one of the best feelings in the world.
"So, what are we doing today?" He asked me since it was a Sunday. Last night, I had my weekly dinner with my friends and so did he. Percy told me beforehand to take a rain check on our Sunday hangout.
"Hmm, for the first time, my mind is blank." I said.
For the past weekends, we did probably some of the touristiest things people can do in New York City. Scenic cruise around Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty. Took a tour as well so we looked for our last names in the book of immigrants and went up Lady Liberty's crown. Spent half a day in Times Square, drinking coffee, eating desserts, admiring the LED screens at night. Even took a picture with the Naked Cowboy. Ate lunch at Carnegie Deli. Went to the top of Rockefeller Center and Empire State Building. Crossed Brooklyn Bridge. Admired Manhattan's skyline by going to a park in New Jersey. Watched so many Broadway shows. Had a picnic in Central Park.
"Do you have anything in mind?" I asked.
"Nada." He started kissing from below my ear down to my neck, causing me to close my eyes and move closer to him.
He continued kissing towards my shoulder and down my arm. Since he was sitting up now, he got me to lie down on my back. While holding my hands above my head, he got on top of me and proceeded to kiss his way back to my lips. Once he reached the corner of my lips, he pulled away and looked at me with so much love in his blue eyes.
"I want to kiss you so badly but I'm shy I might have morning breath." He confessed.
I laughed. "Well, better brush your teeth because the feeling is mutual."
He lowered his face and gave me a soft peck on the lips.
"Oh!" I exclaimed and looked down. "Good morning to you too."
He laughed and got off the bed. He helped me make up the bed before heading down to the bathroom, stealing a kiss as he passed by me. I just shook my head and headed down to the kitchen to make us some coffee. I fed Onion and changed the water in one of his bowls. I went through my fridge and pantry to look for something I can whip up for breakfast.
Someone grabbed me by the waist and turned me around while I was bending over to check my veggie crisper. Luke's lips were on mine. My back was pressed against the inside of the fridge.
"Ooh, cold." I murmured as he once again made his way down my neck, making my eyelids flutter.
I buried my hands in his hair, bringing him closer to me. He grabbed my thighs as he lifted me and brought me away from the fridge so the door closed. I wrapped my legs around his waist and my arms around his neck. Luke kissed me back on the lips as he placed me on top of the counter. His hands were on my knees and he started sucking on my lower lip, surprising me as he bit it. His palms skimmed my legs as he placed his hand on the small of my back to pull me closer to him.
"Mm, minty fresh." I whispered.
He laughed and placed one last kiss on my lips before he pulled away from me. He got our mugs, filled it with coffee, and handed me mine. We both like our coffee black. He took small sips at first but once the coffee cooled a bit, it was finished in a minute or so. He started his daily workout in the living room. I watched him for a couple minutes, admiring how his muscles flexed with every push-up. Once I finished my cup of coffee, I hopped off the counter top and scoured through the pantry once again. I ended up just toasting some Pop-Tarts for the both of us.
Luke went back to the kitchen with his shirt drenched with sweat. I was busy munching on my Pop-Tart while I was rubbing Onion, who was lying down below my chair, with my feet.
"We have to go grocery shopping. Our supplies have depleted." I said then sipped my second cup of coffee. "So, for breakfast, we have Pop-Tarts."
He leaned his back against the counter and drank a glass of water. "Pop-Tarts? Really?"
"Yeah, what's wrong with it? It's my emergency stock. Be grateful that I didn't give you Nutribars and a juice box. Unless you want that." I took another sip. "Plus, Percy, who happens to be a doctor, said that I can eat this every once in a while."
He rolled his eyes but smiled before grabbing a Pop-Tart from the platter. We finished the sugary quick fix and Luke wouldn't admit that he ate most of it.
"I bet you can make something better than this." He said with his mouth full.
"Think so?"
"Yeah! We can stay in today and bake!" He smiled widely at me and headed for the sink with our mugs and platter.
"What do you suggest we bake today?" I went near him and jumped on the counter top.
"Doggy biscuits for Onion, cookies for us."
"Hmm, that does sound nice." I looked over to him.
He stood in front of me and placed his hands on my knees. "If that's a yes, then we better get ready to go out and buy some groceries." He said and held me close to wipe some of his remaining sweat all over me.
I laughed and tried to get away from him but he was already holding me tightly. He started kissing and sucking my neck.
"Salty." He laughed.
"You do realize that that's your sweat?" I laughed along.
"Looks like we have to take a shower." He winked and the proceeded to carry me to the bathroom.
Since we were just taking a quick trip to the grocery store before locking ourselves up in the apartment, I wore very casual clothes: loose high waist denim shorts, tucked in shirt, and sneakers. I absently stared at the mirror as I brushed my hair. I focused on the mirror and saw Luke by the stairs, looking at me adoringly.
"Yeah?" I looked at him through the mirror.
He smiled to himself and looked down at the floor while gently shaking his head. "Nothing."
I turned around to look at him. "No, really, what is it?"
"It's just..." He trailed off, still looking at the floor. "I love you. So much." He smiled at me.
I gave him a smile to show that I was touched. I went over to him, wrapped my arms around his waist, and tiptoed to plant a kiss on his lips. "I love you, too. So much."
He held my face and caressed my cheek. He placed his forehead on mine, staring into my eyes, and smiled. "I never felt so lucky to have you."
"The feeling is very mutual."
I hugged him, burying my face in his chest and hugging him tightly. I wanted to remember this moment. The safe feeling of being embraced. The warm feeling of being loved by Luke. The happy feeling of loving someone. On the tangible end, the way his soft shirt felt against my cheek, the luscious smell of his cologne, and the Rottweiler licking my hand, begging to join in the moment.
I decided to bring Onion along so he could get out of apartment as well. We went to the grocery and spent around an hour and a half going around and deciding what to out in our cart. It was somewhat relaxing to go grocery shopping especially with someone. As boring as it may sound, this was one our favorite bonding activity. We got the ingredients for what we'll bake, food supplies, and a sack of dog food for Onion. We also threw in a couple doggy toys for him. Before heading home, we passed by a restaurant and just ordered our lunch to go. Even though Onion knew Luke for as long as we've been together, Onion still has a hard time warming up to him so I'm always the one holding the leash.
When we got back to the apartment, Luke stowed away the dog food as I did with the frozen food. We took a break and ate lunch before going back to stowing away the remaining groceries.
"Okay, I do the cookies and you do the doggy biscuits." I said and handed him the recipe.
With the speakers blasting Bee Gees, we measured out the ingredients. I started with the flour but felt his hands on my hips. He swayed my hips and then swayed with me, making me throw my head back in laughter. He spun me around so I was face to face with him. We danced to a couple catchy disco songs before continuing.
I decided to make several batches of cookies: chocolate chip, oatmeal, white chocolate macadamia cranberry, and blue chocolate chip. Obviously, the last batch of cookies are for Percy.
"Jackson coming over?" Luke asked me as he helped me scoop out the cookies on the baking tray.
"He said he'd take a rain check." I placed another baking tray in the oven.
"We should invite your mom over for dinner!"
"I'll think about it."
"Come on. It's been a while since I last saw her. She might think we're no longer together."
I laughed. "Fine, but you think of what to cook."
I placed the last baking tray in the oven, taking out the tray full of bone shaped biscuits. From the kitchen, we moved to the living room and sat on the couch. I sat with my legs over Luke's lap. Onion went near us and clambered up on the couch as well. He lay down on top of my legs, facing me. I laughed and absentmindedly played with his floppy ears.
"What about some roasted chicken with some roasted vegetables?" Luke asked. "Do you think she'd like that?"
I gave him a weird look.
"I'm just trying to get your mom to like me."
"She already does." I gave him a soft nudge with my foot.
"You're just saying that."
I rolled my eyes. "Your dinner, your menu."
He got up and started preparing dinner. I shook my head but smiled to myself. I sent my mother a message, inviting her to dinner with Luke and me. Just as I sent the message, my phone rang. I groaned because I already knew how the conversation would go.
"Annabeth Chase." I answered.
"Percy's wrong you know." Thalia said.
"He's just really indecisive." Nico followed.
"I don't really care anymore, you know."
I heard them both sigh.
"Are you okay now?" Nico asked.
"Yeah, better than ever. Being away from New York did wonders." I looked over to Luke, who gave me a wink.
"You should listen to Robyn. She has pretty good songs...some more than applicable to you."
"I'll keep that in mind. See you guys soon. Bye."
After they said their goodbyes, I hung up. I went over to the kitchen to take all the cookies out of the oven. I let them cool and proceeded to put the doggy biscuits in a plastic container. I gave one to Onion, who took the biscuit to the living room. I watched Luke watch Ina Garten as he followed her cook her chicken. He placed the chicken in the oven and according to the video, we have one and a half hour to kill so he got me to dance to Bee Gees once again. We went to the living room and slow danced to How Deep Is Your Love, which ended up to us making out on the sofa.
We got up when we heard the timer go off. Luke ran to the oven, turned it off, got the pan out, and let the chicken rest. With two cookies in his hand, he went over to me and gave me one.
"Mom said she's on her way." I said as I read her message. "Percy also asked if he could have dinner together." I looked at Luke.
"Invite Jackson over. I want everyone to know how good of a chef I am." He smirked
I wrinkled my nose at him but grabbed him shirt to bring him close to me for a kiss.
Since I wanted a minimalist apartment, I didn't really have a dining table. Just a kitchen island that could fit at least four people. While Luke set up the table, I whipped up a salad for the appetizer with the roasted sesame salad dressing Grover gave me from his trip to Japan.
Mom arrived first, bringing a bottle of wine. She scoped my loft for a moment and I can tell she was taking down every detail of it.
"It's been a while since you've had me over, Annabeth." She finally said, petting Onion who was starting to get excited that there were more people in the loft that he was used to.
"Yeah, actually Luke was very keen on having you over for dinner." I looked over at him in the kitchen. He was busy filling a bucket with ice for the wine.
"I would have thought both of you would spend this time alone due to the nature of his job."
"Maybe he's starting to get tired of me." I joked.
"Are we waiting for someone else? I see four sets of plates." Mom pointed out.
"Yeah, Percy's coming over as well."
"Ahh, your clingy best friend."
"I don't know if you mean that in a good way or a bad way."
"Up to you." Mom said as she made her way to the kitchen.
Percy arrived a couple minutes later, bringing some ice cream. I placed those in the freezer and everyone settled down in the kitchen. Percy insisted on sitting between me and Mom. With the salad gone in a couple minutes, Luke started cutting up the chicken for the four of us.
"Oh, wow, this is delicious, Luke." Mom said.
Luke beamed at her and started telling her how he cooked the chicken.
"It's okay." Percy muttered under his breath, causing me to give him a look.
He looked up at me and gave me a small smile.
For dessert, I brought out the ice cream and reheated some cookies.
"You know my favorite ice cream flavor." Mom noted as she reached for the container.
Percy gave her a toothy grin before sniffing the air. "Are those what I think those are?" He asked me with wide eyes.
I walked over with a plate of cookies, placing the plate so that the blue chocolate chip cookies were in front of Percy. "You bet."
He snatched a cookie and bit into it. "Tastes like Mom's." He sighed and gave me a look to say that he was touched.
Once we were through, Mom bid us goodnight, kissed my forehead, and left. Percy offered to stay behind and wash the dishes. Who wouldn't say no to that? Luke somehow coaxed Onion into letting him take him out on his nightly walk although he might have brought the whole container of doggy biscuits.
"I missed this." Percy said.
"Yeah. It's quite nice." I smiled at him.
He smiled back at me and leaned over to give me a kiss on the forehead.
"What's with the mood earlier, Seaweed Brain?" I asked as I started wiping the dishes.
"What mood?"
I eyed him. "You know what I mean."
He kept quiet and wouldn't look me straight in the eye.
"I was jealous." He said almost inaudibly.
"Percy." I started but couldn't bring myself to say anything after that. I knew I shouldn't have asked. Stupid.
It broke my heart. I felt tears starting to form in my eyes. I shouldn't be bothered by this. I should've moved on by now. I felt myself backsliding. Oh gods, help me.
"We've been through this." I said just as soft.
He looked at me with such sadness and pain. "I just..."
"Onion didn't want to go." Luke announced as he entered the loft.
"Really? Maybe I'd have more luck with him." I crouched down and Onion ran towards me. "Hello, honey." I repeatedly greeted him.
Percy quickly finished the dishes and said his good nights. I gave him the container filled with his blue chocolate chip cookies with the instructions on how to reheat it on Post-It stuck to the container. He gave me a timid smile before leaving.
"How many doggy biscuits did Onion get from you?" I asked Luke as I clipped on Onion's leash.
"Almost all."
"Damn, my dog knows how to play you." I smirked at him.
"As long as you don't play me." He said as he wrapped his arms around my waist and gave me a kiss.
I tried to smile sweetly at him as my stomach sank. I brought Onion out for a walk but as soon as we were out the building, he went on to do his business. I cleaned up after him and went back up to my apartment.
Luke was on the sofa, watching TV. I stowed away Onion's leash and saw that Luke already filled Onion's water bowl. I went over to him, straddled him, and started kissing him. He was surprised at first but caught on really quick. He kissed me back and held me tightly against him. He carried me in one swift action and brought me upstairs.
I woke up when I felt something heavy lie down beside me. I looked around and saw Onion on the bed, trying to get in between Luke and me even though Luke was hugging me. I smiled and moved away from Luke to give Onion some space. I tried to go back to sleep but I was wide awake. I got my phone and saw that it was still three in the morning. I got my earphones from my bedside table and started listening to Robyn as per Thalia's request.
Gods, I don't know if Thalia is out to get me or what. Some of the songs struck a little bit too close to home.
"Hey. Is everything alright?"
I looked at Luke who was looking at me with his eyes squinted. I smiled at him and put my phone away.
I lied back down and held his hand. "Yeah, I'm okay."
With our hands intertwined on top of my sleeping Rottweiler, we went back to sleep. I woke up to an empty bed. Even no Onion on my bed! The smell of coffee greeted me good morning though. I padded barefoot down to the kitchen and saw Luke busy cooking breakfast. I went up behind him and wrapped my arms around his waist.
"Good morning." I said and kissed his back.
He turned around slightly and gave me a kiss on the forehead. "Good morning to you too. Get ready, I'll serve breakfast in a moment."
I got myself a cup of coffee before sitting down. I watched him successfully flip the pancake and start plating up. I was surprised because he cooked a whole breakfast meal. Pancakes, bacon, sausages, eggs, and hash browns!
"Wow!" I exclaimed as he put my plate in front of me.
"I know how much you love breakfast food." He smiled tenderly at me.
"'Why would anybody ever eat anything besides breakfast food?'" I quoted.
"'People are idiots, Leslie.'" Luke quoted back.
I gave him a toothy grin and started to dig in.
He watched me eat for a couple seconds before he quoted. "'There has never been a sadness that can't be cured with breakfast food.'"
"Well, you better join me!" I said and patted on the seat beside me.
We ate our breakfast while watching the morning news and I never felt so contented.
"You have got to stop before I get used to this." I told Luke as I used my last slice of pancake to get all the syrup on my plate. "It will be so hard for me to let you go."
"That's the point." He looked at me pout at him and then pecked my lips.
Luke is leaving by tomorrow and I probably won't see him in a couple weeks. I hated it. I've gotten so used to him being around.
"So what do you have planned on your last night?" I asked as I downed my remaining coffee.
"Hmm, I was planning something fancy." He smirked. "I won't say anything else to keep you on your toes."
I groaned but was excited with whatever surprise he has up his sleeve. I got ready for work. After taking a shower, I wore one of my work blouses, slacks, and heels. I decided to let my hair dry naturally so my hair would curl like a princess's, according to Percy. I wore some makeup today, which was pretty much just some eyeliner and dark lipstick.
"You look amazing." Luke said as I made my way downstairs.
"You just wait for tonight then." I winked.
He pushed me up against the wall and started kissing down my neck. "You're getting me all excited for tonight." He said in between kisses.
I chuckled. "You bet."
I kissed him goodbye and left for work. I kind of wished I'd taken a day off to spend more time with Luke.
It was a rather slow day at work today. I didn't go to court and my schedule was kind of free. When lunch break came, I didn't bother eating because I was still full with the big breakfast Luke cooked. I was expecting Percy to barge in but as the minutes of lunch break dwindled, he didn't come. Probably after last night, he has to recollect his thoughts or something. Pushing aside all thoughts of Percy, I started thinking of what to wear for tonight. Perhaps my long, off shoulder, black dress with that slit all the way up half my thigh and heels. Hmm, seems like it's good enough.
For the remainder of the day, I just excitedly watched the minutes tick by. At five in the afternoon, I got up, collected my things, and I was out the door before Drew and/or Mom.
"Luke?" I called out as I opened the door.
Onion was already trying to squeeze his face through the door as he greeted me. I played with Onion for a while before calling out Luke's name again.
"I'm in the shower." He called out. "You get ready while I finish up."
I fed Onion and went upstairs to change. I stripped off my work clothes and wore my formal dress. I accessorized with my owl necklace, my grandmother's watch, and pearl earrings. I retouched my makeup and also added some blush. I wore my strappy heels, put on some perfume, and tried to put my essentials in a clutch.
I went downstairs, careful not to step on my dress, and saw Luke waiting for me at the bottom. He looked absolutely stunning with his tuxedo. He took my breath away, I'd have to say. He was holding a bouquet of flowers. I've probably told him before that I'd prefer something else aside from flowers because I wouldn't really have a use for those once they've wilted but receiving flowers every once in a while made me feel special.
"Luke, I - " I choked because I could feel tears of joy about to come out.
"You look so beautiful, Annabeth." He said as he held my face in his hand.
"I'm so lucky to have you." I whispered.
He gave me the most genuine smile I've ever seen. I could see tears brimming on his eyes. I held his face and wiped the tears and kissed him tenderly.
"Gods, I love you so much, Annabeth." He said as he brought me closer to him. He buried his face in my neck. He was so vulnerable.
I brought his face to mine and started kissing his forehead, eyes, nose, cheeks, and lips. When I got to his lips, he kissed me back with so much desire and need. Both of his hands were on my back, holding me so tight that I wouldn't be surprised if there were marks on my back. I frantically placed my clutch on a stair step then proceeded to wrap my arms around him underneath his tuxedo. I started to bury my nails into his back, causing him to moan.
"Do we really have to go out?" I asked running my fingers through his hair.
"We have a reservation by 8." He said in between kisses. He placed one last kiss on my lips and pulled away.
He has so much more self-control compared to me. We both looked at each other for a moment, breathing hard.
"To be continued." He gave me a wink, which made me melt.
He tried to fix his hair while I erased my kiss marks on his face. I placed the flowers in a vase and reapplied my lipstick before we headed out. Luke was so careful not to let me know where we were going, whispering to the cabbie. He was being a gentleman more so than normal. He would open and close the door for me and fetch me on the other side of the cab.
"No." I said in disbelief.
"Yes!" He beamed at me.
"How did you get us a reservation at Eleven Madison Park?" I wrapped my hands around his arms as we walked in.
"I actually booked ahead of time. Like ahead of time." He said.
He talked to the host, who in turn bought us to our table. Dinner was a treat! Definitely loved every second of it. The food was delectable. An excellent gastronomic experience. I can't revel enough how much I loved our dinner. Luke insisted he pay but I promised to foot the bill on our next extravagant dinner.
When we got home, we did continue where we left off earlier that evening.
I woke up to an empty bed once again. My stomach immediately sank but the smell of coffee got my hopes up. I walked or more likely ran down to the kitchen, hoping that maybe Luke was still here but saw no one. The coffee maker was on. I went over to get myself a cup and saw a note.
I hope this makes your morning a little better. Luke.
As if the emotions truck hit me, sadness just overwhelmed me. I took a deep breath and toughened up. I'll get through this, I've always had!
I got ready for work, wore my usual office clothes, and put on my makeup to feel powerful today. The gods know I need that little boost today.
Work was a bit busier compared to yesterday, which was good because I can get my mind off Luke. I was getting my jam back, working those cases and meeting the clients.
Lunch was uneventful. No updates from Luke. No messages from Percy. No call from Thalia and Nico.
I spun around in my office chair. I haven't heard from Percy for two days now. This is so different. The longest we didn't communicate with each other was when we fought. Maybe he needs more time to think things through. I fought the urge to call him because I didn't want to pester him and cloud up his judgement.
By the end of the day, I was tired from work. I just got ready for bed and cuddled with Onion until I was fast asleep. The next morning, I felt better. I went out for my run and got to the office early.
Today was the third day without Percy contacting me. Very unsettling. I ended up calling Thalia and Nico.
"Have you guys heard from Percy lately?" I asked.
"Why? Is there anything we should know?" Thalia asked enthusiastically.
"Aren't we a little nosy?" I laughed. "But no, I haven't heard from him for three days now."
"Did anything happen?" Nico asked nonchalantly.
"Uhm, well, he might've said he was jealous three days ago."
"Oh, you better check into that." Thalia whispered.
"Or you can just let him reach you out when he wants to. Just let him know you're just there for him." Nico sighed.
"Hey!" Thalia exclaimed. "I don't think we're on the same team anymore." She said glumly.
"Annabeth has been through a lot when it comes to Percy. I think we just have to lie low on the matchmaking." Nico explained to his cousin.
Thalia sighed. "Percy better get his shi-head straight. Time's ticking."
"I should check the hospital just to make sure things are okay with Percy." I decided.
We said our goodbyes and I went on with my work. By lunchtime, I decided to go to the hospital to check on Percy or just see that he's still going to work. So many people greeted me when I got there. On my way to Percy's office, I bumped into Michael.
"Michael!" I called.
He looked up from the folder he was holding and smiled. "Hey, Annabeth! It's been a while since you've been here. What are you up to?"
"I, uhm, was just checking if Percy's here or around."
"Percy?" He has knitted eyebrows. "He's been sick for a couple days now."
My eyes widened. "Sick?"
"Yeah, it's nothing too serious just a normal food poisoning. He'll probably be back soon. He didn't tell you this?"
"It must've slipped from my mind." I laughed, nervously. I didn't want anyone to be suspicious with what's happening between Percy and me. If Percy didn't tell me something this important, it might raise some flags for some people.
"Oh. Alright. I'll catch you later, Annabeth. I have a patient waiting for me." Michael said and gave me a quick hug before rushing off somewhere.
Food poisoning? What on Earth has he been eating? And why wouldn't he say anything to me about this?
I went back to the office and just waited until it was time to go home. I passed by a convenience store and bought a couple packets of instant chicken noodle soup, crackers, and ion supply drinks before going to Percy's apartment. Even though I had a key to his place, I didn't want to intrude and let myself in. I knocked on the door and a couple seconds later, small barks were heard from the other side of the door.
"Wise Girl?" With his voice hoarse, Percy asked as he opened the door, holding Raisin.
I showed him my ecobag and smiled warily. "I heard you were sick."
He let me in and let Raisin down after he closed the door. I immediately crouched down to play with Raisin while saying "Oh, I missed you". I looked up at Percy and he looked horrible. He lost a bit of weight and was pale. He trudged his way to the kitchen, grabbing my ecobag along the way.
"Michael said you got food poisoning." I said, scooping up Raisin in my arms and following Percy to the kitchen.
"Yeah. I reckon I'll be as good as new in a few days." He smiled at me. "Maybe even by tomorrow!"
"Very enthusiastic and hopeful." I smiled back. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't want to bother you."
My eyes softened. "Your nickname is Seaweed Brain for a reason."
He gave me a small smile and looked in my ecobag. "You didn't have to."
"But I wanted to. Just get better and I'll cook you some soup."
Once the soup was ready, I got him a bowl, some crackers, and an ion supply drink and brought it to his room. He was wrapped up in blankets and the window was slightly open. At least there was some ventilation. Since it was summer, it must be hot under those blankets.
"How are you?" I asked as he sat up.
"Cold."
"Here, I got you some hot soup."
He ate very little but it was something. I tidied up and left his apartment as soon as he fell asleep. I decided to stay over at his apartment until he felt better so when I got home, I packed up some work clothes, exercise clothes, pajamas, and things I can do when I'm there. I also packed a bag for Onion. Around ten in the evening, I was back in Percy's apartment. I let myself in rather than waking him up. The plan pretty much backfired because Onion and Raisin thought a reunion filled with barks and zoomies was very appropriate.
"Annabeth?" Percy called out from his bedroom.
I hung my head and went to his room. "Is my name really the first thing you'd call out?" I teased, standing by the door frame.
"Why wouldn't it be?" He squinted at me.
It felt like my heart skipped a beat.
"I mean, who else would bring a big dog into my apartment?"
Oh, never mind.
"What are you doing here?" He said as he tried to get out of his cocoon of blankets.
"I decided to sleep over until you're all good. I mean, you'd do the same for me." I think.
He grinned at me. "Well, if that's the case, I better take my healing journey real slow."
I laughed and went back to the living room just to check if the dogs damaged anything while chasing each other. I placed my bags on the floor, by the edge of the couch, and started to make my bed.
"What are you doing?"
I turned around and saw Percy wearing a sweatshirt. "Are you wearing a sweatshirt? In summer?"
"Don't forget the thermal shirt." He raised his sweater to show me.
I shook my head but laughed anyway.
"Aren't you going to sleep on the bed?" He asked me again.
"I didn't want to impose." I said as I piled up the throw pillows. "Besides, I can't sleep in the temperature of your room right now."
"Come on, Wise Girl, impose all you want. I'll wear a coat, gloves, and a scarf if I have to." He held my hands, giving them a reassuring squeeze.
"Okay, fine." I smiled.
Percy went back to sleep as I got ready for bed. I opted to take a long relaxing bath with my phone softly playing music. I went in the bedroom and the air conditioner was on. Percy was buried underneath the comforter. Still humming the last song I was listening to, I got in bed and saw that Percy was wearing thick pajama bottoms along with his thermal shirt and sweatshirt. I got back up to go through his things and put fuzzy socks on his feet just to be sure.
I looked at his face for a moment and brushed his hair away from his serene face. I froze. I realized I was humming Robyn's Call Your Girlfriend. I quickly withdrew my hand and made sure there was adequate space between the both of us.
I got out of that mess and I'm not going to entangle myself in it again.
Something small was trying to wedge its way between my neck and my pillow. I sat up and saw Raisin looking at me with her big round black eyes, which I had to really stare at just to find since her fur was black too. Percy was still fast asleep, cuddling with Onion. I got out of bed and started my day.
It was still early since my alarm hadn't gone off yet so I went on my morning run. After that, I got ready and left for work, leaving a note for Percy saying that there is some leftover chicken noodle soup in the fridge and crackers in his pantry.
I was in a good mood today. Around lunchtime, Percy sent me picture of some chicken noodle soup and crackers. The day progressed quite quickly that I was even surprised that it was time to go home.
"Seaweed Brain?" I called out as I opened the door.
"In the bathroom." He called back but then proceeded to gag.
I placed my things on the sofa and ran to the bathroom. The two dogs were standing by the door, watching Percy curled over the toilet. I sat down on the floor beside him and stroked his back.
"I hate being sick." He said, closing the cover and flushing.
"Or is this a nice way to say you don't like my cooking?" I joked.
He closed his eyes and laughed weakly.
I got him back to bed and tucked him in his blankets. His face was clammy which made his hair stick to his forehead.
I brushed his hair aside and smiled at him. "Better."
"Thanks, mom." He smiled and winked at me.
I placed a kiss on his forehead as I stood up. "Ugh. Sweaty."
He laughed but stayed in his burrito wrap, contented. I swapped my office clothes for a loose shirt and cotton shorts. I went back to his bedroom and sat down beside him. He lay down, placing his head on my lap. I was going through my phone while playing with his hair. A couple minutes later, Onion and Raisin got on the bed as well.
"So, how was your day?" Percy asked.
I put away my phone. He was looking up at me with bright eyes.
"Well, uneventful. Just met with a couple clients. Read a lot of things. Signed some documents. Was quite surprised that the day was already done." I started to undo my hair. "How about you?"
"Just slept and played with the dogs. Puked a couple times. Ate a bit." He stared up at me for a moment. "I always liked your hair down."
I smiled tenderly at him. "I'll keep that in mind."
I continued running my fingers through his hair and he closed his eyes with a small smile on his face.
"You never told me how you got food poisoning." I started.
"Rachel and I went to another food tasting."
Oh. I kept quiet.
"I told her the first one was already okay but she insisted that it was better to have more options." Percy continued. "I have a feeling it was the shellfish."
Percy wasn't really a big fan of eating seafood. He always had an attachment to anything that came from the sea or any body of water.
"You know how I feel about seafood right?" He looked at me.
I slowly nodded my head.
"Oysters, mussels, clams, scallops. I bet those were what made me sick."
"Alright, alright." I made him stop. "Calm down. Why don't we have some of your favorite tonight, huh?"
He looked so happy when he nodded his head. I made him lie down on the bed and hopped off the bed. I heated the leftover chicken noodle soup and brought some crackers and ion supply drink to his room.
"Chicken noodle soup!" I announced as I placed the tray in front of him.
Percy groaned but started eating. He ate a bit more than last night, which was a good sign. Even finished his ion supply drink.
"I was kind of hoping our favorite steak." He mumbled.
"Yeah, if I want to see that go down the drain. You know, that is a good idea for dinner. Maybe I could still get one before the restaurant closes." I teased.
He gave me the cutest puppy dog eyes that would beat Onion's and Raisin's whenever I had food in my hands.
Percy moved closer to me. "You know, this chicken noodle soup is so good. You can taste the celery. And those herbs! Basil. Oregano."
"Are you bribing me with your sad 'get well soon' soup?" I raised an eyebrow. "It ain't working."
"With some crunchy crackers and slightly salty ion supply drink! Why buy some boring steak?"
I gasped and looked at him with wide eyes. "How dare you?"
He had the same expression in his face. "I regretted it the moment it left my mouth."
We stared at each other for a moment before bursting into laughter. I loved having moments like this with Percy.
"I'll tell you what." I started, making Percy look at me. "I'll cook you a real chicken noodle soup, not these instant ones from a packet, so you wouldn't feel so bad about having to eat it. What do you say?"
"And some cookies too?" He begged.
I rolled my eyes but smiled. "And some of your cookies too."
He did a small victory dance and kissed my cheek. "You are a lifesaver."
Percy washed the dishes while I scoured through his pantry for the ingredients I needed for the chicken noodle soup and cookies. Percy having a bottle of blue food coloring was beyond me.
"Why do you have blue food coloring?" I asked as I brought the ingredients to the counter.
"It's fun eating blue food sometimes." He shrugged.
"Like Dr. Seuss but blue instead of green."
I started measuring out the ingredients for the cookies and Percy plugged his phone to his speakers and played some music. He tried to help by prepping the chicken noodle soup ingredients but had to run to the toilet. I didn't follow him because I had two dogs for that and Percy told me not to check on him. I shrugged and continued my task.
"Why do you have Bee Gees on your phone?" I asked once Percy emerged from the bathroom.
"I heard it playing when we had dinner at your loft last Sunday."
With the cookies baking in the oven and the soup simmering away, Percy pulled me away from the kitchen and we started dancing around the living room.
"If I can't have you, I don't want nobody, baby." We sang to each other as we mimicked those cliché disco dance moves. "If I can't have you, uh-huh, oh."
"You don't know what it's like. Baby, you don't know what it's like." Percy sang as he twirled me. "To love somebody. To love somebody the way I love you." He dipped me.
Since the next song was slow paced compared to the others, we decided to slow dance to Run to Me. I placed both hands on his chest as he wrapped me in an embrace. I took a deep breath and smiled. This was going to be a good memory: both of us slow dancing to Bee Gees while the air smelled like freshly baked cookies.
I cleared my throat. "Maybe the cookies are done."
Percy looked at me and placed a kiss on my forehead before releasing me.
I turned off the stove and oven, getting the cookies out. Percy looked for containers for the soup and cookies as they cooled. Before stowing away all the cookies, Percy already stole two pieces. He already had a glass of milk with him.
"You might regret that later." I warned him.
"YOLO." He said then proceeded to bite into his blue chocolate chip cookie. "Tastes like mom's." He moaned.
"You always say that." I laughed.
"It's true!"
He finished his cookies quickly and did the dishes. I stowed away the soup in the fridge and kept the cookies on the counter. I bet that those cookies wouldn't last a week with Percy.
We started to get ready for bed and Percy was still wearing his pajamas more fitting for winter rather than summer. He was under a couple more blankets compared to me since we sleep with the air conditioner on.
"Thank you for taking care of me, Wise Girl." He looked at me with such softness in his face.
"You know I'd do anything for you." I smiled at him. "Besides you'd do the same thing if it were me, Seaweed Brain."
He scooted closer to me and hugged me underneath the blankets. His sea green eyes was filled with love and care and I could've just stared at those eyes for as long as I could. A sweet smile spread across his face.
I placed my hand on his cheek and stroked it with my thumb. "Well, isn't that ironic? A doctor is terribly sick."
He chuckled and closed his eyes. His arms still wrapped around my waist. "Goodnight, Wise Girl."
I moved a bit closer to him to place a kiss on his forehead. "Goodnight, Seaweed Brain."
I must've woken up early again because all I heard were soft snores and the hum of the air conditioner. I tried to sit up and saw that the bed was full. Percy was still hugging me even though Raisin was cuddled in between us. Onion was sprawled out over our feet. I looked at Percy's face again. Very peaceful, like a sleeping baby. I got out of bed, trying to muffle my laughter because Percy was drooling in his sleep.
I walked around his apartment. I didn't feel like going on my morning run so I decided that maybe I should try yoga. I set up in the living room, complete with soft music playing in the background and an essential oil burner for aromatherapy. I tried out different positions, which was harder than usual because both dogs thought asking for cuddles while I was doing yoga was the best idea. I gave up and just sat there in the dim room.
"Cause you never were and you never will be mine." I sang mostly to myself. "No, you never were and never will be mine." I hugged my knees and rest my forehead on them.
A couple more songs on my Robyn playlist played before I frantically pressed stop because I heard footsteps.
"Oh, hey, you're up." Percy said as he passed by the living room.
I cleared my throat. "Uhm, yeah, I just thought I'd workout before getting ready."
He looked at the dogs lying down on the yoga mat. "They get in the way, don't they?"
I laughed and got up to put my things away. "Why are you up?"
"I'm hungry." He smiled sheepishly before covering his mouth with his hand and running for the sink.
I was already beside him, rubbing his back.
"Gods, just when I thought I was already okay." He said as he washed his mouth.
"Look like you really are taking your healing journey slow." I joked but handed him a towel to wipe his mouth.
He chuckled but exhaled loudly. "Yeah, I get to spend so much time with you." He winked at me.
"Maybe that would work if I didn't just see you puke." I laughed.
Percy grabbed me by the waist and tickled me with one hand. I tried to get away from him.
"Onion, attack!" I said in between gasps of air.
"You know he'll never attack me." He whispered in my ear and continued tickling me.
"Mercy! Mercy!" I screamed.
He let go of me and had a stupid triumphant look on his face as he smirked at me.
"You know I'll get you back for that." I gave him a death glare before heading to the bathroom to get ready.
As I exited the bathroom, the smell of coffee brought me to the kitchen. Percy held a mug and offered it to me. I gave him the stink eye and was about to march to the bedroom.
"Peace offering!" He called out.
I whipped my head. "Pathetic."
"Come on, Wise Girl - "
I cut him off. "Your 'Wise Girl' means nothing to me."
He looked scared. "I don't know what pay back you're thinking about and I'm legitimately scared."
I smiled sweetly. "You should be." I got the cup of coffee and went in the bedroom.
I wore a plain black dress and heels. Ever since I got the hang of putting on makeup, I put on lipstick, eyeliner, and sometimes blush. I put on all three today. When I was ready to leave, Percy was nowhere to be found. I got the container of cookies and brought it with me to work.
Once I got to the office, I stashed it in my secret cabinet and went on with my day. I didn't really have anything for today I obligated myself to read up on certain articles for my upcoming cases. Drew would knock every once in a while to get me to sign certain documents. By lunchtime, I noticed I had a couple messages from Percy.
Where is it?
Where are my cookies?
I swear I will go over there if I don't find them.
I smiled to myself and replied: What are you talking about? Did you check properly?
A couple minutes later, I heard the intercom beep but no one talked. Percy's coming. I turned my seat so the back is the first thing he sees.
"Where are they?" He said as he barged in.
I slowly turned around. "What could you be talking about, Seaweed Brain?" I asked with a raised eyebrow.
He went over to my desk, placing both hands on top and leaning down to my face. "Where are my cookies?"
I smiled and leaned back. "I bet you didn't check properly."
"That's a lie."
"Well, where is it then?" I challenged.
"It's in here somewhere." He started going through my cabinets and drawers.
Percy was still wearing what he wore to bed last night: sweatshirt, thermal shirt, and thick checkered pajama bottoms. He probably turned a couple heads on his way here. He closed the last drawer and had the look of defeat on his face.
"Maybe I didn't look hard enough at the apartment." He muttered to himself.
"Are you feeling better?" I asked. "Since you went all the way here to look for your cookies."
"I still kind of feel like puking." He admitted. "But I have a sickness bag with me." He pulled out a small paper bag.
I shook my head but laughed.
"It feels good to be out of the apartment after being cooped up for almost five days." He said as he sat down on the sofa in my cubicle.
"I don't think my office is the ideal first place to go to."
"No, it is." He said seriously.
I smiled at him. "I think you deserve a cookie." I said and opened my secret stash to get a cookie.
Percy's eyes were huge. He went back to my desk and waited patiently as I got a cookie.
"I knew it! I knew you had my cookies." He said as he wolfed one down.
I laughed and gave him the container. "It was supposed to be pay back for a while ago."
"Trust me." He looked at me, already holding a couple cookies. "It was."
"My cookies got to draw you out of the apartment. Must be pretty good cookies."
"Best. Damn. Cookies." He said while maintaining eye contact.
"So, now that you have your cookies, are you going back to your apartment?" I asked, my eyes darting at my schedule.
"Can I stay here for a while?" He pouted.
"Sure." I smiled. "I only have two clients coming in today."
Percy looked pleased and I went back to work. He was very quiet in his little corner, munching on cookies from time to time. When my clients came over, he would excuse himself and stay with Drew, to give me and my clients some privacy. By the end of the day, he was knocked out cold over my sofa. Mom and Drew already left the office and I decided to let Percy rest. I started reading in advance for my work on Monday.
"I like seeing you work."
I looked up and saw Percy looking at me with a sleepy look on his face. I ran my fingers through hair, which I let down for today, and sighed.
"Really? What about me working?"
He groaned as he stretched. "The way your face scrunches up when you read. How passionate you look when you talk with your clients."
"Is that so?" I laughed. "Maybe you're just delirious because of your fever."
He cocked his head. "Maybe."
"Shut up." I threw a paper ball at him. "What do you want to do tonight?"
"Anything. Just don't bring me back to the apartment. I've been a hermit for too long."
"Alright. I already have a night planned. I just need you to be 100% aboard with it." I looked at him expectantly.
He had his game face on then nodded.
We left the office and went to lower Manhattan. We got on the Staten Island Ferry and enjoyed the sunset as we passed Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, and the New York City skyline. We went around Staten Island for a while before getting on the ferry back to Manhattan so we can appreciate what we passed by at night. This wasn't something we usually did because we would be contented just staying in Manhattan or it's only work then apartment for us. Maybe the last time Percy and I did something like this was when we were in high school. Years ago!
After our ferry ride, I brought him to Times Square. The LED lights was overwhelming but quite breathtaking especially since it was brighter than usual against the dark sky. As a New Yorker, this was normal. We pass by it without stopping to appreciate it. We're often too preoccupied. I looked over to Percy and he has his mouth slightly open as he stared at Times Square. It took him a moment to fully digest everything. He looked at me and a huge smile started to spread across his face. He placed his arm over my shoulders, brought me closer to him, and kissed my head. Before we headed home, I passed by a souvenir shop and bought an iconic I Love NY shirt, which Percy immediately wore.
We went back to his apartment and changed into more comfortable clothes before we heated up some chicken noodle soup for dinner. We brought our hot bowls to the living room and searched for something to watch. Percy washed our bowls and went back to the living room with a plate of warm cookies and two mugs of warm milk. While he was busy watching TV, I was on my phone, trying to buy tickets to a Broadway show tomorrow night for the both of us. When Percy said he didn't want to stay in the apartment, I took that seriously. It seems to me that he was healthy enough to stay out. Both of us ended up falling asleep on the couch that night.
I woke up to Percy spooning me. The sun was shining through the window and the living room was bright. I cautiously removed Percy's arms around my waist and drew the curtains shut so he wouldn't be woken up by the brightness.
Since today was Saturday, we'll be having dinner with our friends by tonight. I tried to think of an itinerary for today as I made coffee. Maybe picnic at Central Park, dinner with our friends, then watch the Broadway musical.
"Annabeth?"
I went to the living room to check on Percy. "Good morning, Seaweed Brain."
He smiled and laid his head back on the pillow with a relieved look on his face. "I have got to stop waking up to an empty bed. Or couch."
"You looked worried."
"Yeah, waking up without you beside me isn't the best way to start the day."
I rolled my eyes but a smile crept its way on my face. "Come on, I have coffee brewing."
I couldn't help the extra bound in my steps as we made our way back to the kitchen. I hated myself for feeling this way. Flattered and giddy. Gods. I was smarter than this. Percy caught my hand, gave it a reassuring squeeze, and I felt as if everything was okay. It was okay to feel like this.
"Are you well enough to drink coffee?" I asked him as I poured myself a cup.
"Try me."
I gave him a cup but also made way, in case he would go running for the sink again. He gave a cocky laugh then took a sip. He gave me a triumphant smile.
"Looks like I can lay off the chicken noodle soup." He said.
"I knew you didn't like my cooking." I feigned being hurt.
His hand flew over mine. "I do. I love your food. If I could, I'd eat it every day. It's just...I have been eating chicken noodle soup for days now."
I withdrew my hand and sipped my coffee. "Whatever you say."
"So what do you have planned for today?"
"How do you feel about a picnic at Central Park then dinner with our friends?"
"Sounds alright. We can bring Onion and Raisin out too!"
"And I also have a surprise for after dinner." I smirked. "Of course, I'm not telling you."
We brought the two dogs as we left the apartment then passed by one of our favorite restaurants to get some takeout before heading to Central Park. Percy chose the spot for us and he chose where we used to make out. I don't know if it was on purpose or not. We placed down a huge blanket for the four of us and lounged. With my sunglasses on, I surveyed the park. Since it was summer, lots of kids were playing in the park. Lots of owners walking their dogs. Percy brought a book with him while I had the Kindle he bought me years before. I looked over to him.
He was lying down, using a throw pillow that he insisted on bringing. He had his sunglasses on as well and Raisin was on his chest as he read his pocketbook. Onion was busy trying to bite the bubbles that float its way towards our spot. I lay down beside Percy and tried to put my head on the pillow as well.
"Well, well, well. Look at what we have here." He raised his head. "'Why would you even bring a pillow to a park?'"
"Shut up." I hit his arm.
"More like 'Thank you, Percy.'"
"Keep your pillow!" I lay down on my stomach and turned on my Kindle.
"Come on." He buried his arm underneath me and flipped me, causing me to laugh.
Now lying on my back, we shared the pillow. Soon enough, I heard soft snores from both Percy and Raisin. Around four in the afternoon, we packed up and left. I told Percy that I'll get ready for our dinner at my loft and just meet him at the restaurant Nico e-mailed. I reminded him to wear something formal tonight since I had a surprise for him. Percy dropped me off at my building and left with Onion and Raisin.
It's been almost a week since I left my loft and I kind of missed it. Our dinner reservation was at five-thirty so I took my time getting ready. I took a quick shower and wore a dark blue slip dress that reached my ankles. I put on some makeup and perfume. I left my hair down and accessorized with my owl necklace, pearl earrings, and my friendship ring. I wore my strappy heels and took one last look at my loft before leaving. The last time I was getting all dressed up was when Luke had a fancy dinner planned for us. I made my way to the lobby and Karl hailed a cab for me.
"Enjoy your night, Miss Chase." He said then closed the cab's door.
When I got to the restaurant, almost everyone was already there. It looks like Percy was running a little late.
"Why are you all dressed up?" Silena asked.
"Do you have a special night planned with my cousin?" Thalia teased.
"Percy and I are going to watch a Broadway musical. It's kind of a surprise."
"Are you celebrating something?" Connor asked. "It's not their friendship anniversary, is it?"
"Don't tell me he's late because he asked you to marry him just a while ago?" Silena raised a perfect eyebrow at me. "I mean, he did that when he got engaged with Rachel."
Nico and Thalia made a face. I saw Percy toss his keys to the valet and make his way to our table. He wore a white button down and dark blue slacks and blazer, which he paired with tan oxfords. He looked handsome.
"You look dashing." I said as he approached the table.
"You, even more so." He winked at me as he sat down beside me.
"Were you late because you were trying to style your hair?" I eyed his waxed hair.
"How did you know?" He gasped.
Everyone proceeded to order and Percy and I consulted with each other on what to get because I was still worried about his stomach. This got us a couple of raised eyebrows from our friends. I explained and Thalia and Nico gave me teasing looks. Everyone shared about their week at work and Percy contributed very little to that conversation. Travis gave me an update on his relationship with Katie, which was so far so good.
After dinner, Percy and I left earlier than the others because we had a show to catch. I placed the address on Percy's GPS and he drove us. He kept guessing but as soon as we got nearer, he got all excited. He parked his car and he was practically skipping as we walked towards the theater. He held my hand throughout the whole show and I think he was the first one to stand up to give a standing ovation. He looked over to me as we clapped and gave me a kiss on the cheek. How happy was he?
When we got back to his apartment, he plugged his phone to the speakers and Bee Gees filled the apartment once again. I took off my heels and before I could walk to the bedroom to change out of my dress, Percy intercepted and brought me to the living room.
"Let's slow dance while we're still all dressed up." He whispered in my ear.
"I took off my heels already."
"The more comfortable you are, the longer we can dance." He smiled at me and started swaying.
We held hands while my other hand was on his shoulder and his other hand was on my waist. He was wearing his friendship ring as well because it felt cold against my palm. I rest my head on his shoulder and he place his cheek against my head. I could smell the faint scent of his perfume. I felt him plant a kiss on my bare shoulder and I smiled. We danced to Don't Throw It All Away and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart. It felt nice but the song lyrics were starting to hit a little too close to home. Nevertheless, we still shifted from one foot to another around his living room.
I pulled back a bit so I can look at his face. He looked back at me with a tender smile and soft eyes. He let go of my waist for a moment to tuck a lock of hair behind my ear and his hand lingered to caress my face. I glanced at his lips and I felt myself move closer and closer and our dogs came running in, making us jump and let go of each other.
Oh gods. Thank the gods. Aphrodite must be having a blast.
I let out a nervous laugh. "I should get changed."
Percy pursed his lips and nodded.
I took my time getting ready for bed because it allowed me to have some time away from Percy and gather my thoughts. We were both quiet up until both of us were in bed. We whispered our goodnights and went to sleep.
Sunday. The day dedicated entirely to just the both of us. Since it seemed like a perfect summer day, I planned to go to the beach. We went to Coney Island. We spent half the day in Luna Park and the afternoon at the beach.
Once we were in the water, I can tell Percy was over the moon. He always had a connection with water. He loved being in it is an understatement. He was looking at me with a mischievous glint in his eyes and I already knew what was coming. He started splashing at me while I tried my best to run away from him. He caught me by the waist and brought me closer to him. I was laughing and trying to get away from him by splashing water towards his face.
When we noticed our position, our laughter died down almost immediately. Percy was staring at my lips and both of us started to lean in. Before our lips could meet, a huge wave caught us off guard. Percy's grip on me tightened and he brought us closer to the shore.
Gods, I was pushing it. Build those walls back up, Annabeth.
I decided to go back to our spot on the beach and just relax. I'll give Percy time to be in the water. Maybe with his thoughts. We can't keep having those moments. Not when he's decided to go through with his wedding. Not when I have a boyfriend.
We went back to his apartment early evening.
"Can I borrow you phone?" He asked me. "I want to play some music but my phone is dead."
I handed him my phone and he plugged it in the speakers. My Robyn playlist started to play. My heart started to race but it was a good thing it wasn't her songs that seemed applicable to my relationship with Percy.
"I'll just take a quick shower." He announced. "Then we can cook something for dinner?"
"Alright." I gave him a timid smile.
I was stowing away our things when I heard keys clinking against each other and the door being unlocked.
"Babe?" Rachel called out as she opened the door.
I stood frozen in the living room. Percy came out with only a towel wrapped around his waist. Rachel ran towards him, not even noticing me.
"How are you?" She hugged him and started kissing him. "Oh, I missed you so much."
"So far away, but still so near. The lights go on, the music dies." The phone was still playing music. "But you don't see me standing here, I just came to say goodbye."
I looked at how he responded. It looked as if he was surprised. Tensed up. Then proceeded to kiss her back. The song continued with its chorus.
"I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, ohh. I'm right over here, why can't you see me, ohh. I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home, ooh. I keep dancing on my own."
My stomach sank and my fingers felt cold. I've dropped everything to take care and be with Percy. But I was stupid enough to hope, even think, that that would change his mind about the wedding.
Neither of them noticed me as if I was camouflaged as the wallpaper of Percy's living room. I slipped away from the scene and furtively headed for the door, noiselessly, hoping I wouldn't disturb the couple that was starting to make out this time. Without bidding goodbye or even bringing any of my things like my phone or keys, I left the apartment with Onion, who followed me out the door, and carefully closed the door behind me.
That's the way it should be. Percy and Rachel. No Annabeth butting in between them.
As I made my way out of the building, I felt so much resentment as tears started pouring down my cheeks and I was gasping for air.
