Apologies for posting late but I have a full-time job now. Ew, adulting, I know right. Stay with me now because this is the first out of four outtakes I have planned. ALSO, Singularspeck77, hi, I see you. I've been thinking about adding one or two chapters in Percy's POV. Kindly add in your reviews what time/event/chapter you'd want me to do in Percy's POV.
If you want to help me, if you have any complains, questions, suggestions or if you just want to talk, message me. I'll reply. :D
Enjoy! :)
Outtake 1 - Back to You
Annabeth's POV
I had a lot to think about.
I sat down on my seat and stared out the window, simmering in my thoughts. The moment I parted with Percy, I caught myself already planning out my packing system for my move back to Manhattan. Percy wore me down. I had to stop myself from going further because before the revelations and confessions, I was definitely not yet ready to go back. I didn't want to go back for Percy. I did miss everyone and everything in New York but I have to be a hundred percent sure I was ready to be back.
I had to reevaluate things.
Dad surprised me by picking me up at the airport. The way his eyes lit up when he saw me exit the arrival terminal made me feel like a kid again. I just wanted to run over to him and throw my arms around him. I just beamed at him as I pulled my luggage behind me. We shared a hug before walking to the car. As we passed by familiar places, I could feel my upcoming decision making getting harder. The thought of being able to visit Twin Peaks, Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street, Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, and more by simply getting in a car or on a bus and train was something I didn't want to let go of. Especially seeing Alcatraz!
"How was Onion?" I asked since it was the first time I left Onion with them.
"No trouble at all. We actually had to keep your bedroom door open because Onion likes to sleep in your room." Dad shared.
"That's good to hear!" I was excited to be greeted by my wiggle butt.
"So, how was the wedding? I'm assuming you caught the bouquet or you got jealous of the bride last night and bought yourself flowers." He glanced at the bouquet in my hands.
"You know I never lose, Dad." I laughed. "The wedding was nice. Intimate and simple." I smiled.
"How are your friends doing?"
"They're fine. They want me to move back already." I laughed.
"Oh! How about Percy?" Dad asked with excitement laced in his voice. He always had a soft spot for Percy, something we had in common.
"He's doing really well actually." I smiled to myself as I reminisced what happened last night. I just wanted to replay and relive that moment again and again. "He says hi by the way."
"How's your mom?"
I admired my parent's relationship. Despite being divorced, they still loved and cared for one another. I shared details and stories of my weekend to Dad. It may sound as if I were exaggerating but I already missed everyone and New York. Don't get me wrong, I was happy to be back to San Francisco though!
We arrived home and they opened the front door as soon as I got out of the car. I readied myself and fixed my stance as I saw Onion bounding towards me. He ran, jumped up at me, and into my arms. It was hard to hold on to him because he was moving around so much. I buried my face in his body. It took a while before his energy died down and we could walk back in the house. The twins and my stepmother welcomed me back and the twins immediately asked for a souvenir from my trip. They asked me about the wedding and my trip and then let me go fix my things.
"Don't forget our souvenirs when you come back out." Matt called.
I sat down on my bed after I unpacked and scoped my room. The sunset entered through the window and colored my room warm orange with a tinge of purple. Onion clambered up onto my bed, lay down, and put his head on my lap. I played with his ears and did some baby talk, telling him how much I missed him.
If I were to be a superhero, I would choose the power to teleport for sure. I was torn. Work, my friends, and practically my life was in Manhattan. Family and the nostalgia of being in a place where I grew up in was in Pacifica, which also happens to be laid-back and worry-free. The fact that both of them were on the ends of the country was making it harder. It was not like I could just drive back and forth.
After much deliberation, I decided to move back to Manhattan. Mom was right, I had to go back to work and yeah, oneyearaftermonthsofpiningisampletime.
My phone buzzed. I grabbed it and a smile instantly appeared on my face. I got a message from Percy checking up on me. He said that he was at the hospital, making rounds. He sent a follow-up message saying that he wanted to send me a message hours ago but he didn't want to seem clingy. Knowing Percy, he most probably monitored my flight schedule. I sent him a reply so quick that it reminded me of the early stages of a relationship, when you could talk to them whole day and night and still feel like it's not enough.
All of us got cozy in the living room as we got ready to watch a movie after dinner. Onion was already lying down on top of the twins. Dad was preparing the popcorn in the kitchen and I went over to help. I informed Dad about my decision and the dismay and acceptance was evident on his face.
"I knew I shouldn't have let you gone to Manhattan." He chuckled weakly. "Is it because I've been accepting your monthly payment?"
I laughed. "It's the least I can do! You don't even let me pay for rent or any bills."
"Do you already have a date?"
"Maybe in a month or two. I want to ease myself into it." I explained.
He nodded and continued popping the popcorn. Of course, I watched attentively. I don't know if it's the nostalgia or Dad just makes the best popcorn but comfort washes over me the moment it touches my tongue. The fragrant smell and the creamy taste of the butter with the contrast of the salt covering a pillow soft yet crunchy popcorn. I brought the bowls of popcorn to the living room and we started the movie.
I was surprised that one by one, we went to the kitchen once the movie ended. I brought home a box of New York-style cheesecake, an authentic one, and we looked at one another when I took it out of the fridge. We sat back down around the dining table and devoured the dessert. Dad opened up my decision to move back. The twins over dramatically turned their heads to avoid my gaze while my stepmother had the same reaction with Dad.
We called it a night soon and we retreated to our respective rooms. With Onion cuddling beside me, I was still stuck to my phone because I was busy talking to Percy. I broke the news to him and I could feel the enthusiasm in the succeeding messages. He even offered to fly to San Francisco to help me pack but I think he just wants to see me. I was so focused on our conversation that I didn't notice the light blue hue of my room. Gods, it's been years since I stayed up this late just talking to a guy.
I asked Percy what time he has to be back to the hospital and he wouldn't tell me. It was probably because I would nag at him for staying up this late. I wouldn't be surprised if he only has a couple hours of sleep before he has to get ready. Reluctantly, I said good night to him. As I put my phone aside, that's when I felt the sleep creeping in.
Upon waking up in the afternoon later that day, I spent a couple moments blinking and staring at my ceiling. I recounted what happened last night and smiled. I swiftly reached for my phone and saw a message from Percy, greeting me good morning. Percy and I have been exchanging messages like this for eons but it's different now. I bit down my smile.
I am happy.
"Since everyone is finally here, I have news." I announced once they finally placed their orders.
My friends were seated in a restaurant for our weekly dinner. Someone's phone was just propped up so that I could join them via Iris. Tonight, they were eating at a ramen shop so I tried to fit in and ordered in some ramen and gyoza. I sat down in my room and in front of my laptop.
There was a clamor as they tried to guess what I was about to share. Are you engaged? Why didn't you run this by me, Percy? Pregnant? Will I be the godparent? Are you moving to Hollywood to try your luck? Are you leaving Percy for a movie star? Wait, doesn't Benjamin Bratt live in San Francisco? Is it Benjamin Bratt?
"I'm moving back to Manhattan." I said over their voices.
"Finally!" Nico smiled.
I looked over to Percy. "You have got to step up."
"That's why Percy couldn't stop smiling." Travis teased.
"Yeah, nothing is going to bring his mood down." Thalia glanced at Percy.
"We're excited to have you back, honey." Silena beamed at me.
"Souvenirs please!" Connor called. "Or else we won't help you with the moving."
"I have Percy for that." I shrugged.
Connor put a hand on his chest, gasped in an exaggerated way, and turned to Percy. "She's just using you!"
Percy laughed and then mouthed, "I miss you."
Even though I was with them through my laptop screen, I could feel the excitement and warmth from the group, which I was absolutely grateful for.
For the following weeks, I paced myself when I packed up. I didn't rush myself and I did it at my own time. My family tried to help me every once in a while but I always turned down their help. I wanted to do everything myself and my progress somehow regressed whenever the twins were near.
It was a lazy afternoon. Onion was lounging on the floor beside me as I sat down and labeled a newly opened box. My phone was on my desk and playing some upbeat song. Onion suddenly sat up with his ears perked up. He stood up and his stance was alert. He ran out the room, narrowly avoiding me.
What in the gods' name?
I cautiously went out to check what made Onion react that way. There were muffled voices and I could only distinguish Dad's. I stood at the top of the stairs only to see someone on the other end, looking up at me. We stared at each other, surprised. We didn't say anything so it was quiet aside from the click-clack from Onion's nails while he happily circled around them. It looked as if they were holding their breath and they could finally let it out. A smile spread across their face. The emotions surged and I flew down the stairs, hoping I don't trip and fall as I threw myself at them. The hug comforted me in ways I didn't even know I needed to be.
"Gods, I missed you." Percy whispered as he carried me and buried his face in my hair.
I hugged him and even wrapped my legs around him. His hug was secure and I held him just as tight. His arms were initially below my butt to support me but Dad's laugh started to turn into a protest. Percy's hand moved up my back and another hand rested on the back of my neck. Onion was trying to get in between us and it made us laugh. I pulled back and he had a huge grin, which is undoubtedly identical to mine. I placed my hand on his cheek and stroked it. He gingerly placed his lips on mine and I could feel him smile into the kiss, making me smile and giggle.
I untangled myself from him and he kept his arm over my shoulders. We heard heavy footsteps and saw the twins appear at the top of the stairs.
"Percy!" They screamed and ran down.
The twins just pushed me out of the way to hug Percy. My family members plus Onion were elated that Percy was here. Honestly, I feel like I should pinch myself just to make sure this was really happening.
"You didn't tell me you were coming!" I looked at him with a grumpy expression.
"I wanted to surprise you." He put his hands on my hips, brought me closer to give me a peck, and my feigned grumpiness melted away.
"Didn't I tell you that I'll be back in Manhattan sooner than you think?"
"I couldn't wait." He smiled tenderly at me and I just wanted to melt into a puddle.
I scoped the room and I couldn't find any suitcases or bags. "Are you flying back after dropping by to see me?"
He chuckled. "I dropped my bags at the hotel and went straight here."
"Wait, have you eaten yet?"
"That could wait."
I eyed him. "You know, you say the right things."
He cocked his head and winked. "It's the 25 years."
"Just let me get ready, okay?" I tiptoed to give him a kiss before going back in my room.
I left Percy with my family and I think they were happy I didn't keep him all to myself, which was what I will do for the next hours. I threw on the first thing my hands touched: denim jeans, shirt, and a chunky cardigan. I tried to fix myself but ended up putting on a bit of makeup and leaving my hair as is because I was in a rush to finish getting ready. I wore my ankle boots and grabbed my phone and wallet as I went out my room.
Percy was sitting on the floor, holding a set of cards. Oh no. The twins managed to talk him into playing Mythomagic with them, which means that it was going to be a while before we can leave. My stepmother and father were sitting on the couch, asking Percy about his stay.
I sighed and plopped down on the seat behind Percy. He leaned back and rested against my legs. I smiled and ruffled his unkempt jet black hair. He threw back his head and gave me a toothy grin. I bent down and placed a kiss on his lips.
"Ew." Matt scowled at us.
"Your turn, Percy." Bobby said.
I looked at Percy's cards and pointed to which card to throw. He looked at me and pointed to a different card. I scrunched my eyebrows and realized that he was trying to lose on purpose. My expression deepened and still urged him to go with my move.
"Hey, hey, choose a card already." Matt called our attention.
Percy went with my decision which made the game go on a bit longer than he would have wanted. I didn't mind it as long as we won. "Purposefully losing" is definitely not in my dictionary.
Percy filed for a leave and was staying in San Francisco for a week. He got a room at a hotel in Pacifica, which was a couple minutes drive from our house. I was already planning our week together. I was torn between bringing him around the city and just lazying around. Either way, I just want to spend as much time as I could with him.
"We win!" I announced as Percy dropped his final card.
"Rematch!" Matt cried.
"Nope." I sat up and held my hand out to Percy to help him stand up.
"We have a week for a rematch, Percy." Bobby eyed Percy.
I borrowed Dad's car and drove to our favorite diner in Daly City. It was relaxing to drive the route that was all too familiar since I would always visit Grandma with Dad when I was younger. Having Percy's hand on my thigh as he glanced at me from time to time gave me a reassuring and comforting warmth. We rolled down the windows. The chilly air bit my cheeks and made our hair fly everywhere. A mix of red, orange, and purple from the sunset made everything picturesque as well.
I parked the car outside the diner. I hitched my cardigan higher up my shoulders as I closed the car door. I tried to fix my hair as we walked to the entrance. Percy grabbed my hand and pulled me near him. He brushed some strands of hair away and held my face in between his hands.
"Hi." He breathed.
"Hello." I whispered back.
He smiled at me and slowly placed his lips on mine. It warmed me up instantly. He pulled away and I was just beaming up at him. He kissed my forehead. He put his arm over my shoulders as we entered the diner.
We ordered the usual: waffles with extra whipped cream, hash, bacon, and eggs, and blueberry pie. Percy seemed to be famished since he devoured his order as soon as it was served. I smiled to myself as I watched him and slowly sipped my coffee. I still can't believe he's here.
"What made you visit?" I asked.
"What? I can't visit my girlfriend?"
My girlfriend. That was the first time he referred to me as his girlfriend.
"Well, of course you can."
"I just really missed you and I wanted to see you."
"We managed to get through a year." I reminded him.
"Okay, you got me." He chuckled. "After 25 years, I finally got to be with you and then you proceed to live on the other side of the state for months afterwards. I just didn't think it would happen this way. It was quite a bummer."
I didn't know he felt that way. Of course I missed him as well but I always knew that I would be back in Manhattan and back to Percy, in the end. That was on my end.
I reached for his hand and held it. "I'll be back soon." I reassured him.
"I know that. 'Sooner than you think.' I just wanted to be around you even just for a while." He rubbed my fingers with his thumb.
"Thank you for visiting me. I absolutely appreciate it. I've missed you so much. I'd say that you have no idea but you're the one who flew to San Francisco."
We smiled at each other. I think we were still on that high of being in each other's company physically.
After our meal, Percy drove us back to the hotel. Since I sat on the shotgun, I placed my hand on his thigh out of habit. At one point, we slowed down at a stoplight. Percy put his hand over mine and looked over to me. With his other hand, he reached over and touched my chin. He had this smirk before he leaned over and kissed me.
I love our small sweet moments like these.
Percy turned off the car's engine and we just sat there. We didn't want to part just yet.
"Do you want to come up?" He hesitantly asked.
I eagerly nodded.
We went in the hotel and up to his room. Even though I spent numerous times alone with Percy before - even spent a night with Percy when we agreed to be together - but I was starting to get nervous all over again. It was both a good and bad kind of nervous. I was excited and tense at the same time.
Percy opened the door and let me in first. I walked in and looked around the room. Since our house was just a couple minutes away, it was my first time to enter the hotel room. Percy got a room with a balcony that faced the ocean. There was a king-sized bed in the middle of the room. He got the room with a decent amount of amenities. The room looked very comfortable and posh.
I felt hands on my waist, making me close my eyes and smile. The bad kind of nervous dissipated instantly. I turned around and was greeted by Percy's big, delighted smile. I wrapped my arms around his neck and tiptoed to kiss him.
It was a sweet kiss. I stepped back and the look on Percy's face was different. The goofy expression was gone. Lust was evident in his sea green eyes. He took a shaky breath through his slightly opened mouth as the grip on my waist tightened. I could feel myself reciprocate the feeling. My pent-up hunger was growing. Percy moved closer and I just pulled him down to my lips.
The kisses became needy. We made our way further into the room. Since I was walking backwards, unfamiliar with the room setup, and afraid I might bump into something, I was struggling. Percy noticed it. He held me by the waist with one hand while his other hand hitched my leg up. I gasped in surprise and I heard him chuckle as he kissed down my neck. In a swift maneuver, I wrapped my legs around him and he carried me. He sat down on the edge of the bed. We kicked off our shoes and got back to it. He had his back against the headboard. I smiled as I crawled towards him and straddled him.
"Hi." I bit my lip.
"Hello." He smiled as he pushed my hair back. "I missed you."
I kissed him and he brought me closer to him. I felt his hands inside my cardigan, making his way from my waist, my sides, my shoulders, and up to my arms. My cardigan slid off and pooled around me. I tossed it on a chair near the bed without breaking away from his lips. I was starting to get excited when I felt his warm hands on my back, underneath my shirt. He rubbed my back before his hands cautiously touched my sides. Chills ran up and down my spine. I bit his lip rather hard enough for him to groan. I laughed and made my way to his neck.
"Gods." He whispered. "I love you."
I froze and so did he. I pulled back and sat down on the bed. Percy wouldn't meet my eyes and when he finally did, he was so flustered.
I love you. It rang in my ears. We've said it to each other countless times but we always knew it was in a platonic way, in a I love you as a human way. We also used to tease and flirt but there was no romantic bearing in it or whatsoever. This, on the other hand, was new and it was different.
"You love me?" I asked.
"I - I," he stammered, "I didn't mean to say that."
I felt my face fall. He extended his arms and reached for my face.
"No, no, what I mean is I didn't mean to blurt it right now. Not in that way. I don't want you to think it was a spur of the moment declaration." He explained as he tenderly touched my cheek. "I just had it all planned out."
I slowly nodded, taking in everything that just happened. That was quite a roller coaster.
"You don't have to say anything right now. I just sprung that on you and I underst –"
"I love you too." I interrupted him.
It was amusing to see his face change into different expressions: worry, disbelief, and relief. He let out a breath and proceeded to beam at me. His smile reached ear to ear. He kissed me with so much gusto it made my toes curl then showered me with kisses all over. He made sure I didn't feel his weight when he was on top.
"So what did you have planned?" I asked in between pecks.
He pulled back, leaned on his elbow, which was near the top of my head, and looked down at me. "You know I'm not telling you." There was a smile in his voice.
"I know." I sighed in resignation. "I was trying my luck." I pulled him back down to my lips.
I opened my eyes to a dimly lit room with one lamp in the corner of the room turned on and the moonlight entering through the window. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath through my nose. I felt Percy's arms tighten around me, making me smile.
What time is it?
I gingerly removed Percy's arms around me and got off the bed without disturbing him as much. I tucked him back in and retrieved my phone from somewhere in the room. It was already late at night. I had a couple messages from Dad asking me where I was. I rolled my eyes because despite my age, Dad was still treating me like a teenager. I understand where he's coming from though so I end up complying.
After placing a note on the nightstand beside the bed, I kissed Percy's forehead before leaving the room. The drive back home was quick and when I got in, Onion was already excitedly waiting for me. I greeted him to let his energy die down a bit. I was surprised to see Dad sitting in the living room, asleep, even after Onion's welcome. I put a hand on his shoulder to gently wake him up.
"Time to sleep upstairs, Dad."
He looked up at me, blinking slowly. "Did you just get in?"
"Yes, Dad. You know, you don't have to worry about me. I'm a grown adult."
"I know that..." he trailed off, "I'm just not yet ready to let go of you."
"I know, Dad, but I already managed to live by myself in Manhattan."
Dad laughed weakly, got up and made his way to the stairs. "Good night, Annabeth."
"Good night, Dad. Love you." I smiled at him.
He stopped by the foot of the stairs and smiled back. "Love you too."
I took a deep breath and followed Dad upstairs. I got ready for bed, smiling to myself when I was remembering my afternoon with Percy. I still can't wrap my mind around the fact that he's just a couple miles away from me...and the fact that we just said I love you to each other.
My phone rang and I already knew who would be calling me at this hour.
"I don't like waking up to an empty bed especially when I know you were beside me before I fell asleep."
"Hello, Seaweed Brain." I smiled. "If I hogged you and the car, my family would probably never let me back home."
"I don't see what the problem is."
I laughed.
"Do you want me to call you a Pegasus?" He offered.
Spending the night at Percy's wouldn't be problem, right? "Sure."
"Pack for the week already." He instructed nonchalantly.
"A week? And what do you suggest I do with my baby boy?"
"It would be a lengthy phone call if you want me to answer that."
I blushed but clarified, "I meant Onion." I glanced at my Rottweiler, laying down on my bed.
"Oh, the hotel is pet-friendly. I checked before booking."
"Alright. Just let me pack up. See you!" I said.
"I might have let you slip away years ago but not anymore." He said playfully before hanging up.
The idea of staying in a hotel for a week was delightful but also waking up and falling asleep wrapped in Percy's arms for a week? Yes please!
The time it took for me to pack up my things was embarrassingly long because I was choosing between comfortable and sultry clothes. I felt like I ended up overpacking by bringing both. Whether or not I changed out of my ratty old shirt and loose pajama bottoms into silk pajama set with lace trim and matching robe is unimportant. Around half an hour later, a car pulled up in front of the house and I wore my oversized cardigan once again.
Onion and I got dropped off at the hotel and we made our way up to Percy's room. I knocked on the door and when it opened, I was pulled in by my waist and hot, wet kisses were placed on my neck.
"Oh gods." I whimpered as my eyes closed.
Percy pressed me against the wall and continued to suck on my neck. I immediately dropped anything I was holding and buried my hands in his luscious black hair. I started breathing through my mouth as my breathing hastened. From my waist, his hands moved up to my shoulders and helped me shrug off my cardigan. Once my cardigan fell on the floor, his hands were on the knot of my robe. The fact that he didn't untie it as if he were waiting for my permission made me smile.
Such a gentleman.
I gently pulled him away from my neck and kissed him on the lips. I untied my robe and it joined my cardigan on the floor quickly after. I felt him smile into the kiss. He held my face and started guiding me further into the room with him walking backwards this time. He stopped midway and we just burst into laughter. Having Onion jumping up at us was making it hard for Percy to walk backwards without looking where he's going.
"Thank the gods for peepholes because it would be awkward if it were room service and not me." I joked, trying to catch my breath, while Percy crouched down and played with Onion.
He got up and looked up and down at me.
"What?" I suddenly felt conscious.
He moved closer to me and placed his hands on my waist. "Did you change out of your usual pajamas for tonight?"
"Maybe."
"Know that I love your holey shirts just as much."
I gave him a look and raised an eyebrow at him.
"I really do." He buried his face in my neck once again.
"You like doing that, don't you?" I smiled as my eyes closed once again.
"You bet."
I let out a squeak when he lifted me up and brought me to the bed.
I missed this.
We lied down on the bed, facing each other. I smiled as I took note of the small details. I might have said it numerous times but I want to remember as much as I can. Well, to be fair, this was only the third time I said it. The first time was during Travis and Katie's wedding. We were alone and discussing about being together. The way the corners of his eyes crinkled when he had that delighted look on his face. So pure. He looked absolutely dashing in a suit with his hair pushed back and coiffed. Perfect.
The second time was on the same night and we were finally alone in my loft. We were on the couch and it was the blue hour. He was in clothes that were very different from the ones he was in a couple hours ago. I could remember the excited look on his face mixed with disbelief as we sat across from each other, nervous. Despite that, everything was calm. That was before we reached for each other.
This time he had the same sparkle in his eyes and same adorable expression on his face. His tousled hair fell over his eyes. His hand was resting on my waist while our legs were intertwined. I could feel the love and I felt loved. I suddenly remembered what he told me in the diner earlier today and guilt crashed into me.
I hugged him and buried my face in his neck. "I'm sorry."
"What?"
"I didn't consider how you felt when I went back here."
"Oh, Wise Girl." His voice was comforting as I felt his arms tighten around me. "It's alright."
"I didn't even make an effort to see you. Let alone, know how you felt about it."
"No need to worry about that. I didn't even tell you until today." He rubbed my back. "I'm sorry if you feel like it's your fault."
I peeked and saw a sad smile on his face. "You're being very understanding. Thank you."
"Well, I don't want to lose you."
"You don't have to be this amenable."
He smiled at me and kissed my forehead.
I woke up and smiled when I felt Percy's body against mine as he hugged me from behind. I snuggled closer to him and felt his arms tighten around me.
"Good morning." He whispered in my ear with his low, raspy voice.
"Mm, this is how I want to wake up for the rest of the week."
"Really? Well, how about like this?" He placed a kiss on my neck.
"Maybe."
"Like this?" Kiss on my shoulder.
"So so."
"This?" Kisses down my arm.
"Meh."
In a quick motion, I was on my back and he was on top of me with a smirk was on his face.
"Average." I shrugged.
"How about - "
I hugged him and rolled us over so I was now straddling him, sitting on his stomach. I looked down at his surprised look which turned to a knowing smile.
I bent over and whispered in his ear. "Well, how about like this?"
I felt his hands ball into fists as he gripped the hem of my pajama shorts.
I chuckled. "Thought so."
I straightened up and grinned when I saw him biting his lip.
"Better get used to it." I winked.
He pulled me back down by my pajama top and said in a husky voice. "Good morning."
I was about to kiss him when a loud beeping startled me. I jumped away from Percy and frantically looked around the room. Was that the fire alarm? At this point, Onion was barking as well. Percy was calm as he reached for his phone on the bed side table and turned off his alarm while laughing at Onion and my reactions.
"Why in the gods' names do you have an alarm while you're on vacation? Did you forget to turn it off?" I asked as I climbed back on the bed and back on top of him.
"Nope. If you knew me well enough, you'd know why I have an alarm."
"Breakfast buffet! Wait, let me just freshen up." I got off the bed and went to the bathroom.
Percy joined me in the bathroom and we got ready. I felt self-conscious because he would watch me with a tender look and a small smile on his face. I put on my robe and tied it shut once I was done. I turned to look at him and he moved closer until I was sandwiched between him and the bathroom counter. He lifted me up and set me on the counter. I could hear my heartbeat in my ears as he stood in between my legs with his hands on my thighs.
"Why don't we continue where we left off?"
"Such a shame to be late after being woken up so early." I raised an eyebrow.
"Well, you were already awake before the alarm went off." He shrugged.
"You have a point." I wrapped my arms around his neck.
He leaned in to place a kiss on my lips and we were just a couple kisses in, his alarm went off again.
"Two alarms?" I laughed as he left the bathroom to turn off his alarm. "And you had to choose the loudest and most annoying one?"
"In case we sleep through the first one." He called.
"I wouldn't want to get in between you and a breakfast buffet." I joked, got off the counter, and followed him to the room.
We held hands, swinging, as we made our way down to the dining area. Thank the gods I made sure to train Onion so he would stay near me even without a leash. The number of people willing to wake up early for a breakfast buffet was not a lot. We made a quick run through of what was served before helping ourselves and getting seated.
I got seated first and sipped my coffee. I watched Percy go back a couple times, adding more food to the growing pile on his plate as Onion patiently followed him around. Percy had this goofy look on his face as he made his way to the table.
"I love breakfast. Serve it in a buffet and it's one of the best things in the world." He said excitedly.
"After the breakfast buffet, what did you have planned for today?" I asked.
"Hmm, I thought you'd take care of that part."
I scrunched up my eyebrows.
"Admit it, you already thought of what we'll do the moment you saw me yesterday." He teased. "But if you insist on knowing what I planned. We can walk by the beach, swim in the pool, avail the spa services, go to the city, or if you want, we can scrap all of that and stay in the room for the whole week."
I felt my cheeks warm up at the last option.
"But if you asked me, the last one seems the most enticing one." He shrugged and proceeded to smirk.
"You're such a flirt." I rolled my eyes but smiled.
We used to playfully flirt with each other in the past but nothing we took seriously. This time, though, I would be lying if I said I didn't feel butterflies in my stomach or my cheeks warm up whenever he would tease or say something charming and sweet. It's nice to know that we both mean it now.
"Do you want me to get you more coffee?" He asked.
"Please and thank you." I smiled and handed him my empty cup.
He stood up and placed a kiss on my head as he got my cup on his way back to the buffet. For all I know, he just wanted to go back and grab a couple more dishes he missed. He came back with cup of piping hot coffee and another plate filled with food.
Once finally full, we decided to explore the hotel. We looked at the different amenities: bar, gym, spa, swimming pool, and the access to the beach. The last two made Percy's eyes twinkle which meant I already knew what we would be doing for the rest of the day.
We got back to the room and readied ourselves for a day spent on the poolside. Nobody said anything. We both just knew what was happening and what we were preparing for. I changed into a bathing suit and covered myself with a robe.
"What do you need that for?" Percy eyed the pocketbook in my hand.
I looked down at my book. "I thought I could catch up on my reading."
"You won't be swimming?" He pouted.
"I will!" I reassured him. "But I was also thinking maybe I could check out the spa."
"What's the point if we don't spent time together?" He went up to me and hugged me, resting his arms on my waist.
"Do you expect me to stay in the pool the whole day? All pruney and wrinkley?" I made a face.
"All pruney and wrinkley with me." He smiled.
"You got to do better than that to convince me."
We went to the pool and it was actually a really nice day to go for a swim. It was sunny and warm. Percy jumped right in and the glee on his face when he resurfaced was adorable. I followed him in. I was cautiously testing the water with my foot then he came up and pulled me in. He was laughing when my head popped up the surface.
"I told you, the water is fine." He said.
I swam towards him and wrapped myself snuggly around him; legs around his waist and arms over his shoulders. He instinctively placed his arms around me to support me even though the water made me almost weightless. I glanced down at his lips and back up at his eyes. I gently placed one, two, three light kisses on his lips and the kisses became longer and starting to get passionate. His hold on me was starting to get tighter. I pulled away and quickly pushed him down, dunking him with all of my weight. He came back up with a surprised yet mischievous look on his face.
"For pulling me into the pool." I said and quickly swam away because I knew he'd be getting even.
We swam around a bit and I got out of the water before he did. I tell you, when Percy's in the water, it would take hours for him to leave it. I sat down on the pool chair and dried up a bit before reading my book. I was surprised when something wet plopped down on my legs. I looked away from my book and saw Percy laying down on his stomach and over my legs with his head resting on my stomach. I was so engrossed with what I was reading that I didn't notice Percy leave the pool and walk up to me.
"Hello." I smiled and ran my fingers through his wet hair. "Tired from swimming?"
"Lonely while swimming." He looked up at me with those sea green puppy dog eyes.
"Stay here with me for a while."
"What are you reading?"
"Pride and Prejudice."
"What? Didn't you read that back in high school for our book report?"
"I like it. It's called a classic for a reason." I defended.
"Read to me."
"Alright." I obliged. "'You must not blame my aunt. Lydia's thoughtlessness first betrayed to me that you had been concerned in the matter; and, of course, I could not rest till I knew the particulars. Let me thank you again and again, in the name of all my family, for that generous compassion which induced you to take so much trouble, and bear so many mortifications, for the sake of discovering them.'"
"Wait. I want to read that part." He held his hand out.
"Make sure your hands are dry." I instructed.
He shook his hands dry and got the book. "'If you will thank me,' he replied, 'let it be for yourself alone. That the wish of giving happiness to you might add force to the other inducements which led me on, I shall not attempt to deny. But your family owe me nothing. Much as I respect them, I believe I thought only of you.'
"Elizabeth was too much embarrassed to say a word. After a short pause, her companion added, 'You are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged, but one word from you will silence me on this subject for ever.'"
"Perseus Fitzwilliam Darcy Jackson, are you proposing to me?" I teased him.
He said nothing but gave me an equally playful look.
"Because you better not be plagiarizing Jane Austen in your proposal."
"Even if she puts words in a more eloquent way than I could ever try?"
"Even if." I said in a strict tone.
He continued reading to me, now laying on his back. He held the book with one hand while his over hand rested on my leg. I closed my eyes and played with his hair. This was relaxing. It was as if I had my own audiobook.
"Elizabeth's spirits soon rising to playfulness again, she wanted Mr. Darcy to account for his having ever fallen in love with her. 'How could you begin?' said she. 'I can comprehend your going on charmingly, when you had once made a beginning; but what could set you off in the first place?'
"'I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.'"
Percy paused, making me break from my reverie and look at him.
"'I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.'" He repeated, glancing up at me from time to time, and smiled at me. "I love you."
My heart swelled up and I leaned over so I could whisper in his ear. "I love you too." I kissed his temple before reclining back. "But I'm sure this isn't how you planned to say it."
He chuckled but said nothing more.
A few more pages and the book was done. We took one last quick dip in the pool before going back to the room to get ready to grab late lunch at the hotel's restaurant. Afterwards, we ordered some desserts and coffee from the hotel's cafe and hung out there for a while. We exchanged stories about our respective activities in Manhattan and Pacifica. He was telling me stories from the hospital and it made me miss Michael and Will. He also talked about Sally and Paul, making me miss them terribly. In turn, I told him about my family and Malcolm, who I get to go out with from time to time.
Once we saw the sun paint the landscape outside a warm orange color, we decided to walk along the shore. Onion excitedly ran around while Percy and I leisurely strolled hand-in-hand. I enjoyed the feeling of sand in between my toes and the relaxing sound of the waves crashing and retreating to the sea. We eventually sat down in the sand and gazed out to the sea. The sky was beautiful. The dark blue blended with the reddish orange and formed a line where it met the sea out on the horizon.
Despite planning to relax and maximize the hotel amenities, especially the spa, we ended up spending some days going around the city. I brought Percy to my favorite spots that I recently discovered during my yearlong stay in San Francisco. We also met up with Malcolm for dinner. Aside from his visit, Percy also surprised me with tickets to Alcatraz. My smile that day couldn't be wiped off from my face. The week was just delightful. I got to spend time with Percy and fall in love with San Francisco all over again.
It was Sunday afternoon. We decided to stay in for today. I was making myself a cup of tea when my phone buzzed and saw a message from Dad.
"Dad is inviting us to have dinner at home tonight." I shared.
Percy went up to me. "Introducing me to the family already?" He teased as he intertwined his fingers, resting his hands on the small of my back.
"Too soon? You're right. Maybe I should tell them you're my best friend." I shrugged.
"Can best friends do this?" He placed a peck on my lips.
I cocked my head. "In some cultures, it's very normal."
He lowered his hands, squeezing as he brought me closer. I shrugged but I could feel myself blush. He buried face in my neck and I just closed my eyes and smiled. I placed my hands on his shoulders and he surprised me by reaching down a bit and hitching up both of my legs. I wrapped my legs around him and let out a giggle.
Percy and I got ready around half an hour before we were supposed to be at home. Even though we were only eating at home, we still got all dressed up. Percy and I wore our Sunday's best. I stood in front of the mirror, checking myself, when I noticed a smudge on my neck. I rubbed it but it didn't go away.
I turned to Percy and gave him an incredulous look. "A hickey? Don't doctors frown upon hickeys?"
"Doesn't mean I don't like giving them."
"So much for practicing what you preach."
"At least I know where to place it." He ran his fingers through my hair, fixing it to hide the hickey.
I looked at my reflection again. He was right. Barely noticeable.
We finished getting ready and passed by the restaurant to buy a bottle of wine and a box of cake for dinner. We booked a Pegasus. As we got nearer, Percy started to play with my fingers in a panicky manner. We walked up to the front door and before I could ring the doorbell, Percy took a deep breath. I raised an eyebrow at him.
"Is it weird that I'm nervous?"
I laughed. "I have been staying with you at the hotel for a week now. I bet they already known that something is going on between us."
"Well, that's normal for us even before. Expected even!"
"Yeah, maybe I should introduce you as my best friend if you're nervous."
"No! I don't want that."
"So why are you nervous?"
"I just don't want to mess it up."
I softened and reached up to caress his cheek. "Seaweed Brain, they love you and you already know that."
He visibly eased up. I leaned in and gave him a quick kiss, which was the same time Dad opened the door. I smiled at Dad and Percy got so flustered he stuck his hand out for a handshake. Dad was surprised but shook Percy's hand.
"Good evening, Mister Chase." Percy greeted.
"From Dad to Mister Chase." Dad gave me a quizzical look. "What did you do to Percy?"
"What did I do? He acted this way when you showed up." I defended playfully myself.
"Well, come on in. We're almost done preparing dinner."
Dad let us in. I handed him the wine and cake. I pulled back Percy a bit, scrunching up my eyebrows at him. He shrugged and shook his hands to ease the tension. It was amusing to see Percy like this. Onion ran around the house, excited to be around a lot of people again after spending a week with just Percy and me. We waited in the living room for dinner to be ready. The twins were already sitting on the floor with the Mythomagic set up.
"We waited a whole week for this." Matt said.
"Annabeth has been hoarding him." Bobby gave me the stink eye.
"Fine, fine. I'll leave him with the both of you." I said as I stood up.
Percy held on to my hand and gave me pleading eyes, as if he was asking me to stay. Was he nervous around the twins as well? I smiled at kissed his forehead before heading to the kitchen to help with the dinner preparation.
"What's with Percy?" Dad asked.
"He's nervous about being introduced as my boyfriend. Maybe you wouldn't like him."
"Nonsense!" Dad rebuffed. "Although maybe we should play with him."
My stepmother, Dad, and I made our way to the dining room, snickering like kids. We called them for dinner and got seated. Percy sat down beside me and I placed my hand on his thigh, squeezing it to give him reassurance. I talked about what Percy and I did for his weeklong stay: visiting tourist spots, going to my favorite places in the city, meeting up with Malcolm, and spending time with Onion. Percy has been awfully quiet throughout dinner, which was the opposite of his friendly, enthusiastic self whenever he was around my family.
"So, Percy," Dad looked over to him, "what are your intentions with my daughter?"
"I-I," he stuttered and glanced at me.
I gave him a small smile and his nervous expression slowly changed into a tender one. It made me feel all warm inside when he reciprocated my smile.
"I plan to be there for her and love her for as long as I can. I have been doing it for all my life now and it's honestly the easiest and most effortless thing I have done."
I mouthed, "I love you."
Percy slowly reverted to his usual confident self for the remainder of the dinner. From referring to Dad as Mister Chase back to Dad. After dinner, we moved to the living room. Percy has his arm resting over my lap while he sat down on the floor and continued playing with the twins. I indulged the twins by letting Percy play as much rounds as they want. Percy was flying back tomorrow and I did keep him to myself after all.
It was late in the evening when we called it a night. We hugged everyone good night and they all wished Percy a safe flight tomorrow. We decided to leave Onion at home because he might get caught in the middle of the hustle of packing up and going to the airport. Dad insisted we take the car for the ease of going to the airport tomorrow.
We got in the car and just sat there for a moment. Percy didn't start the car and I noticed the hesitation. Percy's face slowly showed melancholy.
I placed my hand on his thigh. "Twin Peaks one last time?"
A sad smile appeared on his face. "One last time."
Instead of going back to the hotel to pack up for tomorrow, we headed to Twin Peaks. We stopped by a convenience store along the way to get some coffee. With Percy leaving in a few hours, I wanted to spend the remaining hours awake. We sat on the concrete barrier. He was behind me as I sat in between his legs. The hot bitter coffee and the warmth from Percy's body made me comfortable in the chilly air. San Francisco's city lights were mesmerizing. The Golden Gate Bridge was lit up and we could see Alcatraz's lights turned on as well. Aside from the city lights, the car lights added to the illumination of the sight in front of me. I looked at the different places and locations where Percy and I visited in the earlier days.
I'll never get tired of this sight and I don't think I'm ready to let go out of it.
Percy's arms tightened around me, breaking me from my thoughts.
"I love you." He whispered in my ear.
I smiled. "I love you too."
He gently placed a kiss on my temple. "I'm in love with you."
In love.
"Absolutely and blissfully in love with you."
I slowly turned around to look back at him and he had the same tender look as earlier tonight. 25 years together and this is the first time he said this to me. Completely disregarding the time he said, "I think I'm in love with you." That doesn't count.
I beamed at him and as stupid as it sounds, I could feel myself tear up. "That's the first time you said that."
"I can say it again if you want." He offered.
"Yeah, say it again."
"I am unconditionally in love with you." A smirk was starting to form.
"One more."
"I am irrevocably in love with you."
"Okay, okay, that's enough Bella." I joked.
He chuckled, making me laugh as well. With one hand, I reached over to stroke his cheek and stretched up to kiss him. He placed a couple more pecks on my lips before pulling away.
"Wait, is this what you have planned?" I looked at him excitedly.
He smiled smugly at me as if he was just waiting for me to figure it out.
"On your last night? That's when you planned to say it?" I gave him a stink eye.
"So you'd want to go back to Manhattan earlier." He shrugged.
I squint my eyes at him. That was just mean and plain dirty.
"When do you plan to fly back to Manhattan?" He asked.
"Soon. I don't want to rush it. Probably as soon as I finish packing all my things."
"Maybe I should have spent my visit helping you pack."
"If you wanted to get into a fight with the twins, I guess." I joked.
"I'm going to miss you." He sighed. "More than Nico misses you."
I laughed. "I'll miss you too."
"I'll buy you a plane ticket for tomorrow if you want." He jokingly offered.
I would be lying if I said I didn't think about agreeing to it and just impulsively saying okay.
We got back to the hotel around two in the morning. It was very quiet as we walked to our room. This was the last time I would be walking down this hallway to the room I have been occupying for a week now. Somehow, I'll miss staying here.
I took out the keycard and unlocked the door. I entered the room first and turned to Percy, who was patiently waiting for the door to close before locking it.
It dawned on me that I wouldn't be seeing Percy for a couple weeks, maybe even months.
I marched towards him, grabbed him by his shoulders, and kissed him. I pushed him until his back was against the door, closing it. It was a good thing there were no hooks on the door or else that would have been painful for him. Pulling back a bit, I saw his surprised look turn to a lust filled one. He held my face and kissed me with gusto. I fumbled to lock the door before Percy could pull me further into the room.
"Have you been working out? You seem to like carrying me." I noted as he set me on top of the nearest table.
"Just enough to sweep you off your feet." He smiled before going back to kissing me.
"That better not be another hickey." I warned but it came out as a moan.
"Relax, I know where to place it." He said before moving to another spot on my neck. "Just something to remember me by."
We laid down on the bed, facing each other. I didn't want to fall asleep. I wanted to maximize my time with Percy because who knows when I would be with him again. Percy, on the other hand, looked like he was fighting sleep away.
"You should sleep." I whispered as I gently pushed away some hair away from his eyes.
"I don't need to." He said but then tried to stifle a yawn.
I chuckled. "Are you sure about that?"
"I don't want to close my eyes. I don't want to fall asleep cause I'd miss you, babe, and I don't want to miss a thing." He burst into song.
I laughed and joined him. "Cause even when I dream of you, the sweetest dream will never do. I'd still miss you, babe, and I don't want to miss a thing."
He smiled at me. "I'll just sleep on the flight back. Don't worry."
"At least please tell me that you're not working as soon as you arrive in Manhattan."
He avoided my eyes. "I don't want to miss one smile. I don't want to miss one kiss."
"No, you're not going to get me to sing along." I sat up and looked at him.
He spread his arms, inviting me in for a hug. I stared at his face and he pouted. I gave in and dove right in his arms.
"That's only five hours of sleep." I whined.
"Coffee can make up for the three more hours." He reassured me.
We stayed wrapped in each other's arms until we eventually fell asleep. I didn't want to open my eyes when I woke up. I wanted to believe that it was still dark and time has somehow stopped so I could be with Percy a little longer. I felt a kiss on my forehead and heard someone whisper.
"Why do you have your eyebrows all scrunched up, Wise Girl?"
I hesitantly opened my eyes to squint at Percy. "I didn't want to wake up because that would mean you'd be leaving soon."
He sighed. "Is it bad that I don't want to leave yet?"
I snuggled closer to him. "Don't go." I said even though I already knew what he would say.
"I wish it were that easy." He took a deep breath. "Do you think there's a spare room at your house for me?" He joked.
"If we're on our best behavior, I could talk Dad into letting you stay in my room."
He chuckled and just hugged me tighter. We got up and got ready after a few more minutes in bed. Percy wasn't kidding about going straight to work once he arrives in Manhattan. He got dressed in his usual work clothes: dress shirt, slacks, and dress shoes. I helped him fold up his sleeves and tie his necktie. He styled his hair the way he always does for work. It was nice seeing Percy get ready.
Trust Percy to never miss out on the breakfast buffet. He made sure that the flight he got back to Manhattan gave him enough time to eat breakfast at the hotel one last time.
The drive to the airport was quiet. Percy wanted to be just dropped off at the arrival but I insisted that we park so I can give him a proper send off. I watched Percy go up to the counter to get checked in. A few minutes later, he went back to me with his boarding pass.
I shakily took a deep breath through my mouth.
We hugged each other and I didn't want to let go. He pulled back and held my face, staring at me with his sea green eyes. I leaned in for a kiss.
He placed his forehead against mine. "Come back to me as soon as you can." He whispered.
He kissed my forehead and that was it. I stood there, unmoving, as I watched him make his way to the boarding gates. I stared at those gates for gods know how long until my phone rang.
"I miss you." Percy said in a somber voice.
My stomach sank but I smiled sadly. "I thought you'd buy me a ticket?"
I heard him chuckle on the other end of the line.
"Have a safe flight, Seaweed Brain."
There was a part of me that just wanted to go to the airline counter and buy a ticket for the same flight Percy was on.
Now I know why I didn't visit Percy in Manhattan. I hated the feeling. The dread of going to the airport, knowing this would be the last time you'd be around one another for a while. The emptiness and loneliness once you go back home all by yourself.
Percy plays dirty. He would randomly call me and greet me by saying he missed me. One time I picked up and he started singing Queen's Love of My Life.
"Love of my life, don't leave me. You've taken my love and now desert me. Love of my life, can't you see? Bring it back, bring it back, don't take it away from me because you don't know what it means to me." He bellowed.
I didn't know if I should cry in amusement, anger, because I miss him a lot or he referred to me as "love of my life".
"Should I stop of continue singing?" Percy asked.
"I hate you so much." I said almost inaudibly. "You play dirty."
"I miss you too."
It took me around three weeks to finally finish everything: packing up and bringing myself to leave San Francisco. Percy's calls sped up the process I have to admit. Everyone accompanied me to the airport and it was quite a while before they could let me go.
I stared out the window and smiled to myself. The last time I was in a plane to Manhattan, I was filled with anxiety and was afraid to see Percy. Now I was excited to be with him.
I felt my heart jump when I started to see the all too familiar cityscape: the famous building turned landmarks, national parks that were a ferry ride away, Central Park for that pop of greenery in the city. When I felt the plane descend, it was as if I couldn't sit still. Time felt simultaneously slow and fast. I waited for the fasten seatbelt sign to turn off before getting my things of course. I'm not that person who stands up the moment the airplane's wheels stop turning as it gets parked. Don't be that person.
To get back at Percy for surprising me in San Francisco, I didn't tell him that I was arriving today. Only Nico and Thalia know I was flying in today and they both offered to fetch me from the airport. I pushed my cart filled with my luggage while pulling Onion along.
"Finally!" Someone called then proceeded to throw their arms around me.
"Welcome home!" Nico greeted me as he waited for Thalia to finish hugging me.
He gave me an equally tight and long hug. "Who knew a visit from Percy was what would make you come back."
"A visit from you would make me immediately fly back with you to Manhattan." I smiled.
"Well, come on. We don't have all day." Thalia said as she pushed the cart for me.
I noticed that they were both wearing their what they usually wear for work. "Are you fetching me on your lunch break or am I just underdressed for our reunion?" I asked.
"We have to hustle, honey." Thalia said. "Welcome back to New York."
"I could've just booked a Pegasus if I would have known."
"And not be the first persons to greet you once you arrived back here?" Nico shook his head.
"At least let me treat you lunch!'" I offered. "We can stop by that bodega we like and I'll order sandwiches on the go."
"And coffee too!" Thalia piped.
We got to the car and drove away from the airport. Thalia and Nico waited in the car as I ran to the bodega and ordered. They apologized for rushing me and offered to have dinner with me later tonight as they dropped me off. Karl helped me bring my luggage up to my loft and he said he was happy to have me back. I looked around, taking a deep breath and letting it out.
It's good to be back.
I haven't been in my loft for months. It was dusty and there was a musty, stale smell. It would probably take a couple days to get my loft back to its tip top shape. Clean and air it out.
I fixed the loft enough to make Onion comfortable. I put out some water and food for him and placed a kiss on his head before heading out. I got in a taxi and went to the hospital.
Walking around the hospital halls got me nostalgic. I have visited Percy so many times that I know the ins and outs of the hospital and the staff already know me. The fact that Percy introduces me to everyone helped as well. I think I spend the same amount of time here and at the courthouse, maybe more time in the hospital.
Whenever I passed by employees who knew me, they had surprised expressions with wide eyes and slightly opened mouths. It has been almost two years since I last visited. They probably thought I would never come back because I've never been away for that long. I would smile, wave, and put my index finger in front of my lips as if to tell them not to tell anyone else that I was here.
I made my way to the doctors' offices and as if it were an instinct, I mindlessly walked until I stood in front of Percy's office door. I turned the knob and it was locked. That would mean Percy was doing rounds, eating in the cafeteria, in the emergency room, or just not coming in today. Who knew having Percy's keys along with mine was a good idea? Bulky but at least my visit wouldn't go to waste.
I went in and locked the door behind me. I surveyed his office and sat down on his chair. The warm lightbulb on his desk convinced me that Percy was just somewhere within the building. I smiled to myself when I spotted my face on his desk. A framed picture of Percy and me was propped up. It was a stolen shot of us joking around and laughing when we were pulled aside for pictures during his wedding reception. At first glance, it looked like it was our wedding because I was all dressed up in white and all. I'm surprised to see that he would still have a copy of his wedding photos because if I were him, I would have thrown those away the moment I signed the divorce papers.
I called Percy to tease him.
"Hey, Wise Girl, what's up?"
"I miss you." I mimicked his sad voice.
I heard him sigh on the other end. "You know that's not fair."
"Then why have you been doing it to me for the past weeks?"
"To make you come back to me faster."
"Are you at work?" I asked.
"Yeah, just doing some rounds."
"Oh, alright. I wouldn't want to get in the way. Have fun visiting your patients!"
I checked his desk again and saw his clinic hours. Percy had about one hour to finish his rounds before his patients come in. I could stay in his office for an hour or so. To kill time, I ended up organizing his office and hiding notes in random places.
My ears perked up when I heard keys jingling. I swiveled the chair so that the back was turned to the door. The door creaked open then a soft click as the door closed. The sound of my heartbeat echoed in my ears as my excitement grew. I wonder if Percy could hear my heartbeat as well. I knew the moment I turn around I would see him. My excitement started to wane because after a few seconds, I didn't hear any movement. Didn't Percy notice that his office was tidy now or that his chair is facing a different direction compared to when he left it? Note to self: have your reservations when it comes to Percy and safety and security.
It was quiet in the office; the lack of sound was deafening. Suddenly, my phone vibrated in my hand and the distinct sound of my ringtone quickly followed. I looked at who in the gods' names would call me at this exact moment. Percy's name flashed on the screen. Quickly turning the chair around, I finally surprised Percy. Well, I hope I still surprised him.
The look of disbelief painted his face as he still had his phone to his ear.
"No." He said.
I bit down my smile and nodded.
"I think my ER shifts are finally getting to me." He whispered to himself.
"Surprise."
He looked down at his phone, which was still trying to reach mine, and glanced back up to me. I opened my arms to invite him for a hug. He calmly walked towards me and hesitantly touched my hand. Gods, how many ER shifts has he done to think he's hallucinating? He sank to his knees and buried his face in my stomach.
"You're home." He muttered.
"I'm home." I smiled down at him and ran my fingers through his hair. "Back to you."
He looked up at me with glistening eyes and I bent down to place a kiss on his lips. He stared at me with a huge smile on his face before laughing gleefully. He stood up, pulling me up as well, and gave me a proper tight hug.
"So you were the one everyone was whispering was back." He said, sitting on his chair and admiring me as I sat down on his desk.
"Surprised?" I asked.
"Delightfully so." He reached for my hand. "When did you arrive?"
"A while ago. Nico and Thalia picked me up during their lunch break."
"They didn't tell me." He pouted. "You didn't tell me."
"This is probably the third time I've said it, 'Surprise'."
We stared at each other with small smiles on our faces.
"I should go. Let you go back to work and I'll go back to fixing the loft." I jumped off the table.
"Why don't you stay at my apartment for the meantime?"
I cocked my head. "I could. Is that okay?"
"More than okay. I'd make your loft messier if I could." He joked.
"You probably shouldn't be around when I'm tidying my loft." I eyed him. "I'll see you later." I smiled.
He didn't let go of my hand and tugged on it. I leaned down and gave him a kiss. He held my face with his other hand and deepened the kiss.
I groaned. "No, I have to go and you have to work."
"I probably don't have patients yet." He coaxed me. "Probably stuck in traffic."
I straightened up and went to check if there were people waiting outside for Percy. I peeked and true enough, no one was outside. I closed and locked the door, prancing back to him. He moved his chair back a bit and I sat down on his lap while he held my waist and legs to keep me from falling. We cut our little make out session short because he was supposed to be meeting patients who had scheduled check-ups with him. Not wanting to ditch my friends while working around Percy's schedule, Percy offered to pick me up at my building after I have dinner with Nico and Thalia.
I spent the whole afternoon cleaning the loft and packed my bag for my one week stay at Percy's apartment when I took a break. Honestly, I think it would take a day and a half to clean my loft and another day to unpack all my things, totaling to two and a half days. Knowing Percy, he'd come up with something to make my stay longer than necessary, which I don't really mind at all.
At around six in the evening, I left the loft again and went to have dinner with my friends. It was pretty uneventful because we talk very often when I was in San Francisco. We were pretty much up to date with everything so our conversation revolved around our day. Nico drove me back to my building and greeted me good night, telling me how happy he is that I'm back. In a few minutes, Percy was already there to pick me up.
I took my time getting my loft ready. It meant Onion and I got to stay at Percy's apartment for longer and he wouldn't have it any other way. I would wake up late in the morning and spend the rest of the day in my loft. Early in the evening, Percy would already pick me up unless he's assigned in the ER or called in for an emergency. Even if he were on call, I still end up leaving early.
It was in the middle of the week. I was sitting down in front of my closet, organizing my clothes. The loft was already clean and aired out; all that was left to do was to unpack my bags. Onion woke up and stood up. He ran downstairs, his nails were clacking on the floor as he excitedly waited for the door to open. I looked at what time it was and Percy was right on time.
"Wise Girl?" Percy called out after greeting Onion.
"I'm upstairs." I called back.
He went upstairs and sat down beside me.
He gave me a quick kiss. "Hello. I missed you."
"It's been only a couple hours." I smiled.
"It's been too long." He pouted and kissed me again before laying down on the floor and resting his head on my leg.
"I heard the bed is more comfortable." I looked down at him while he looked up at me. "Why don't you rest there?"
He closed his eyes and shook his head. I continued folding my clothes, sometimes playfully over his face. A faint smile would appear on his face but I think he actually dozed off for a bit. It was quiet for a while except for his soft snore. Percy took a deep breath and slowly opened his eyes.
"Do you want to have dinner with Mom and Paul?" He groggily asked.
"I haven't seen them since I arrived but I don't think we would want to bother them on a weeknight."
"I bet they miss you already."
"Are you sure it's fine?"
"More than fine, I believe. Come on." He stood up, complaining about his back and not sleeping in a good position.
"Wait, just let me get ready." I got up as well.
He glanced at my old college shirt and cotton shorts ensemble. "What? You look fine. They've seen you in pajamas before. Don't worry about it."
"Let me get ready." I said firmly.
A smug smile grew and he wrapped his arms around my waist in a loose embrace. "And you were making fun of me when I was nervous about having dinner with your family."
"It's just...different now." I crossed my arms. "May I get ready please?"
"They love you and you already know that." He repeated to me.
"It's different now. We're together now."
He flashed me a wide smile with his eyes closed and threw his head back a bit. "Still the best decision I've ever made."
It made me feel all warm and fuzzy. I wanted to bury myself in his embrace.
"I'm still going to get ready." I said.
He sat on the bed and watched me get ready. I used to be self-conscious whenever he did that but now, I was comfortable. I know we're going back to Percy's apartment after the dinner but I decided to dress up, something I would wear to impress people like my boyfriend's family. I went over to Percy to have him zip me up, which he did after he peppered kisses on my back. We stopped by a wine shop to buy something for dinner. Percy called his mom on our way to their building. He parked the car and the nervousness started to creep in. My hands started to get cold and clammy. I gave Percy the wine bottle in fear it might slip through my hands.
Percy looked at me with the same expression I gave him when we were standing outside of my parent's house in San Francisco. I didn't meet his eyes and kept walking.
"Oh no, you're not getting off that easily." He chuckled and reached for my hand, pulling me towards him.
"Please don't torment me." I pleaded.
"Nope." He laughed. "Are we nervous to be introduced as my girlfriend?"
I made a face and showed him my index finger and thumb. "Just a little."
"They love you, ever since we were kids. I bet Mom has been praying to the gods for this." He smiled.
I must admit that it did help me relax. He kissed me in a way that I all I wanted to do was go back home and continue this.
"You ready?" He asked.
I shook my head and pulled him closer for more.
He chuckled. "As much as I want to, and the gods know how much, they're waiting for us."
I nodded before pulling him back for one last kiss.
"Mom, Paul," Percy called out as we got in, "I brought my girlfriend over for dinner. I hope you don't mind."
"Girlfriend?" Sally called back as she made her way to the front door. "Oh, Annabeth, you're back!" Sally threw her arms around me the moment she saw me but quickly pulled away to keep me at arm's length, scrutinizing me. "Wait, girlfriend?"
I had a small smile as I nodded.
"Both of you better not be joking with me. I don't want it to be like that time I thought you asked Annabeth to marry you."
Sally looked over to Percy, who also gave confirmation.
"Gods, finally!" She rejoiced and hugged me tightly. "The gods know how long I've been asking for this."
"See? I told you." Percy said as he kissed my cheek.
"What are we celebrating?" Paul asked.
"Percy and Annabeth are finally together!" Sally beamed.
"So this is why they brought wine over." Paul inspected the wine bottle.
We all went to the kitchen to have dinner. The meal was scrumptious as always. Sally and Paul interrogated us throughout the night. It was comforting to know how supportive they both were of our relationship.
"Wait, wait, why didn't you tell them about us?" I gave Percy a stink eye. "It's been months."
"Well, I wanted you to see their reactions. Quite unfair and selfish of me if I didn't give you a chance to see it." He shrugged.
I cocked my head as if to consider it. "Thank you for thinking about me."
"Always do." He winked at me.
"You know, when I heard that Percy was spending a week to visit you in San Francisco, I was scared that I might be losing Percy to San Francisco too." Sally shared.
"Losing me to San Francisco? Mom, be scared of losing me to Annabeth. If I were to move to San Francisco, it would be because of Annabeth." Percy said.
"I'd never be scared to lose you to Annabeth. Go ahead."
Percy gasped. "Mom, are you pimping me?"
I looked over to Paul and he just shook his head. "They're just a different dynamic."
It was quite an evening. When we were about to head out, Sally gave me another hug and I could have sworn I heard her whisper, "Praise the gods, finally."
We got to Percy's building and Onion already raced up to his door without even waiting for us. When we got in, I immediately went to the bedroom to change out of my clothes. I felt Percy's arms as he hugged me from behind.
"It was a successful meet the parents if you asked me." He said.
I closed my eyes and leaned against him. "Hmm, I think so too. Something tells me your mom loves me more than you."
He chuckled and kissed my shoulder, tightening his embrace. "Why don't we continue where we left off a while ago?"
I turned around to face him. "Yes please."
By the end of the week, I was ready to move back in my loft. I brought back Onion and my things. I also instructed Percy to bring some of his belongings to my loft because I already anticipated that he would be spending some nights here. Besides, there was already a space in my closet for his things.
I've put my used clothes in the laundry and lit my newly purchased scented candles. Percy was in the kitchen, stowing away the groceries. I scoped the loft and it was finally identical to the way I left it. Except there was something that made it brighter and added more life to it now. I looked at Percy and smiled.
I like seeing him here.
I want seeing him here.
I want him to stay here.
I couldn't just offer him space in my closet because we already had that way before. It also seems like a waste to have him stay here all the time while he pays for his apartment's rent.
I removed the key to my front door from my key ring and made my way to the kitchen. I slid the key on the counter and looked at him.
"Oh, it's okay. I still have my copy." He smiled at me.
"Move in with me."
He stared at me before running out the door.
What in gods' name?
"I'll go get my things." He called, making me laugh.
