Writers block continues to be an issue
In order to break up the tension a little (read; keep you all guessing), I'm adding a snippet I had planed for later on. This may not be to everyone's tastes, but I'm trying to show the world of Avatar as diverse.
Someone To Talk To
Korra was starting to get worried: it had been two weeks since she had broached the subject of having more children with Asami, as well as her somewhat radical idea of how to bring that about. And it wasn't like she was suggesting that Asami took her father into their bed or anything; they'd use the same method they had with their other children, just with a different donor. And the truth was, she liked the idea of having more children, even if they would technically be her half-siblings. She hadn't even approached the subject with her parents; spirits knew, it was hardly the sort of thing suitable to ask of them in a letter, but she needed to know where Asami stood before she even considered taking the matter further. And if her wife was against it... well then, there were always other options, such as adoption. But Asami was silent on the matter, deftly changing the topic every time Korra tried to bring it up. Indeed, the one time the Avatar thought she had her wife cornered by trying to bring up the subject while Asami was in the shower she had found herself dragged, fully clothed, into the spacious cubical where Asami had preceded to make her forget about pretty much everything for the next hour.
A knock on her office door brought Korra back to reality, and she looked up to see Ikki's head poking round the frame, a thoughtful expression on her face.
"Hey you!" Korra smiled at the young airbender; she had grown up so much in the years since the Avatar had first arrived in Republic City, but in many ways she was still the little sister Korra never had, "What's on your mind?"
"Have you got time to talk?" Ikki asked, sounding more than a little hesitant.
"For you? Always." Korra gestured towards a pair of chairs and a sofa by the fireplace, set around a low table that housed a teapot and cups. Joining her young friend, she quickly used her firebending to heat the water to near boiling and set about making the two of them a fresh pot of jasmine tea. "So, what do you want to talk about?"
"It's kind of personal." the normally talkative Ikki sounded positively sheepish, "I've been asked out on a date by one of the other Air Nomads, and I said yes."
"You've been on dates before." Korra looked at the younger woman over the top of her tea cup.
"Yes, but this is... different." Ikki looked around, almost as if to make sure no one had slipped into the room after she had closed the door, "It's not the fact that I'm going on a date... but who asked me?"
"Older man, huh?" Korra asked, "I can understand why you're worried; after what happened with Jinora and Kai..."
"I'm going to the Movers with Mia this Friday, as her date, and I don't know what to tell my parents." Ikki blurted out, looking equal parts terrified that the truth was now out in the open, but also relived to have it off her chest.
Korra studied her for a moment, then swallowed the mouthful of tea she'd had to force herself to keep from spitting out.
"Mia? That's the cute little redhead from the Fire Nation, right?" The Avatar asked, "More than a little clumsy? Still hasn't gotten the hang of a wing-suit?"
"Yes." Ikki blushed, eyes downcast.
"Okay." Korra put her cup down, "Is she the first woman you've found yourself... attracted to?"
"I think that I've always found women attractive," Ikki admitted, "but Mia is the first one I've... liked."
"And you also like men?"
"Yes."
"Okay." Korra paused, trying to find the right words, "I think I can understand why you came to me with this; you're worried about how your parents will react. Which I can understand; I was just the same when I realised my true feelings for Asami. But I don't think you have anything to worried about, given just how open and accepting your parents are."
"Because they were so accepting of your relationship with Asami?" Ikki tilted her head to one side, "I hate to tell you this, but it took my dad a really long time to come to terms with that, a lot longer than I think you realise. And as for mom... well, accepting the sexuality of two of your friends is one thing, but one of your own children?"
"You think they'll see it differently?" Korra asked rhetorical, "I think I can understand where you're coming from with that, to an extent. While Asami and I have never hidden our relationship from the public, we've never exactly embraced what you could call the cultural side of our sexuality. And believe me, there is an active LGBT community here in Republic City if you know where to look. But we've never really felt like placing some kind of limiting label on our relationship, so we've never really gotten to involved beyond a few speeches at rallies and marches."
"I remember my dad being... unhappy about that." Ikki nodded apprehensive.
"He just feels that there is a time and a place for everything, and the front steps of City Hall just as the riot police turned up might not have been either of them." Korra laughed, "Look, I know you're not going to want to hear this, but there are people who will take issue with you going to see a Movers with another woman. Like it or not, you're a public figure, and there are people who think that that makes you an open target for the newspapers and radio. Asami and I still get followed around, and it's been almost ten years now. Speaking of which..." Korra stood and walked back to her desk. She quickly sorted through a stack of envelopes until she found the one she was looking for. Making her way back across the room she handed it to her guest, "Here you go; Asami and I felt that you and Jinora were old enough to receive your own invites to our anniversary party. It does say 'and guest', just in case things work out on Friday."
"Thank you." Ikki took the invite with a warm smile, "So, what do you think I should tell my parents?"
"The truth; that Mia is someone you have found yourself attracted to in a romantic sense and you want to see where those feelings might lead." The Avatar returned the smile, "I'm not saying that they won't be a little shocked, but they're not the kind of people to throw you out of the house just because you're bisexual."
"...I've never actually fought about myself as anything other than, well, me." Ikki admitted, "I'm not sure if giving it a name helps or not."
"You're you." Korra reached out and took her hand, "And that's all you need to remember."
"Thank you." Ikki hugged the Avatar, "It's nice to have someone to talk to."
"Any time." Korra looked at the clock on the wall and frowned, "Asami should be back by now; she went to the office for a meeting before picking the girls up from school. I swear, if she's gotten sidetracked by some new prototype or another..."
Asami looked at her watch and swore; the meeting had over run, and there had been a seemingly endless line of people trying to get her attention for something or another that couldn't possibly wait until tomorrow. Spirits, if it hadn't been for the fact that the Fire Nation trade envoy has catching the night train to Ba Sing Se, she would have avoided going into Future Industries at all. It was hard, damn hard, trying to run a multi-billion Yuan business and still have time for a family. But her father had done it as a single parent and plotting to overthrow the government, and there was no way Asami was going to be anything less than as devoted a father to her ow children.
And yes, it had afforded her an excuse not to talk to Korra about... well, her wife's idea.
Spirits knew, she wanted more children; to feel a new life growing inside her, to welcome it into the world and watch it grow. She loved Senna, Yin and Aang more than life itself, and the idea of adding to that happiness willed her with a warm glow she couldn't describe. But then there was the 800lb Goat Gorilla in the room; the manor in which Korra suggested going about having more children. Asami could see where her wife was coming from, but she still felt like it was crossing some kind of line, some moral taboo that was just that step too far, even if it was all that stood between them and their shared dream of having more children. She had given it a lot of thought, but finally come to the decision that no, it was taking things too far.
If fate deemed that they only had three children, then she would learn to live with it.
The traffic around her moved, but not by much. Years ago, not long after the Spirit Wilds had first appeared, Asami had submitted a proposal to radically redesign the roads in and around Republic City to take them into consideration. Unfortunately, while President Raiko had been supportive, her grand plan had died the death of a thousand cuts in comity until all that was left were a few new road signs. She still had the plans, filled away in her office, and mentally made a note to resubmit them after the upcoming elections.
Looking around at the sea of cars, lorries and buses around her, Asami couldn't help but note that she'd lost her White Lotus security detail; she always insisted on driving herself, unless she planed on drinking, so as usual, they had been keeping pace in a second car that had been right behind her when she left Future Industries. But somewhere in the automotive chaos that followed, they had gotten separated. Not that she was overly worried, given just how long it had been since anyone had attempted to get more than an autograph off of her, but she knew they worried. She was, after all, the wife of the Avatar, and they were sworn to see to Korra's well-being. Still, it would have taken a very dedicated and lucky assassin to locate her nondescript Harmony amide the countless others on the road. The car, along with its variants, was finally helping to shake the image of Future Industries as a arms manufacture. Yes, defence projects still accounted for a notable chuck of their business, but the public was finally getting back to seeing them for what they had once been.
The traffic to her right opened up, and Asami momentarily considered ditching the main road and trying her luck on the backstreets and alleyways she had once cruised in her tourer, but decided against it. If nothing else, the White Lotus sentries would be expecting her to stick to the agreed upon, well patrolled rout to the school, so sticking to it would improve the chances of them catching up with her.
Asami was just reaching to turn the radio on when a truck shoot out of a side-road and slammed into her car, crushing it up against the delivery van beside her, and her entire world went black.
