"Time is of the essence, Mazikeen," The demon nods and asks,
"Which favor do you want me to call in?"
"All of them."
Lucifer is supposed to follow the plan: he and Amenadiel would check the farthest location, but there's something compelling him to go to a particular spot.
Maybe it's because he's also worried for Chloe that when she texts him her location, he goes out of his way and gets there first.
And his hunch was right. There he finds Daniel, bleeding profusely. The devil puts his hands together and not a second too soon, Amenadiel is right by his side.
"I need you to stop the time, brother."
Even though Amenadiel hasn't been able to stop time on a whim like he used to, there were certain events that he was able to tap into them. So he concentrates with intent and time actually stops.
"Good. That's good brother."
"I can't hold it for long Luci. I can feel it slipping. You have to hurry."
Lucifer nods and takes Dan's frozen body and carries it like it weighs nothing. Even though the time is stopped he can feel Daniel's soul is so close to the threshold.
So when they landed just outside of the still emergency room, the club owner puts Dan on the gurney and then places his palm over the latter's chest.
He's not a healer but he's sure he can share a fraction of his life force, just enough to buy the doctors some time to work their – well, miracle – for the lack of a better term. He hopes it's enough.
Time resumes just as the devil finishes his good deed and all he can do now is wait.
Some time later and everyone's in the hospital, waiting for some good news.
The surgeon comes out and tells them that they were able to stabilize Daniel but he's not out of the woods yet.
That he coded five times while being operated on.
That it's a miracle in itself that they were able to get to him in time.
Or that they were able to stop the massive bleeding.
The doctors couldn't explain it because under normal circumstances, Detective Espinoza should have been dead.
Too bad we're far from normal , Lucifer thinks and softly squeezes Chloe's hand to reassure her that he'll do everything in his power to keep Daniel from kicking off.
Two hours in, Lucifer offers to get them supplements. On his way out, he sees Azrael leaning against his corvette.
"Sorry, Rae-rae. I can't let you take him." Lucifer is ready to cut a deal with his younger sister if necessary.
"I'm quite surprised at how far you were willing to go for this human."
"He's my friend."
Azrael nods in understanding. Her brother's selfless act is unprecedented, and would have likely gained attention. But that's the least of his worries as far as she can tell.
"Well, no harm no foul. The dude didn't reach the threshold so I guess it's a false alarm."
"Thank you, Rae-rae."
"No thanks necessary, Lu. I didn't do anything. Gotta run, though. Tell Ella I said hi? Oh shoot ! No, don't tell her."
"You should tell Miss Lopez who you really are. I think she'd appreciate that."
"In time, Lu. Smell ya later."
Azrael was gone as soon as she came.
Daniel finally opens his eyes days later and the first thing he sees is Lucifer.
Of course Lucifer would have preferred Daniel to see Chloe and the urchin first, but, they were taking turns in watching the latter and today just happened to be Lucifer's. So.
"Welcome back to the land of the living, Daniel."
"What… happened?"
"You didn't die. That's all that matters. Don't worry, we found those responsible for your near death experience and severely punished them. They won't be able to hurt anyone else."
"You killed them?"
"They're gonna wish I did, to put it simply."
"Oh, right. Devil."
"Hmm!" Lucifer replies enthusiastically. "I've informed the Detective and they'll be here in a few minutes. Until then, you're stuck with me."
"Thank you, man. You saved my life."
"It was a team effort, Daniel. But, you're welcome."
