~Millennia Ago~

The air was stale and cold as death itself walked the ground of the valley. The stench from the mutilated bodies filled the air. None of the gods had seen such an atrocity. Not one person was left alive. This was more than just a battle; this was a mutilation.

Klaus gazed upon the dead bodies, and shook his head. How can anyone kill so many and be okay with it? Now they would never have peace.

He lifted his gaze to the lone man standing at the center of it all, and frowned. He approached the man, his long black coat blowing behind him as the wind picked up.

"What have you done?" He asked, stopping within a foot of the man.

Mikael sneered at his stepson. "You should have known better than to send these assassins after me, Niklaus." He stated, turning away from him.

Klaus felt tears burn his eyes. "You should have left my realm alone, Mikael." He shouted at the man's retreating back.

Mikael stilled, and turned around. "I gave you that realm, Niklaus. Everything you have, I gave to you." He stated, pointing around them.

Klaus shook his head. "No, everything I have, I fought for. It was me, not you." He stated his voice tense.

"You are delusional, boy!" Mikael shouted. "I am the king of the Gods!" He shouted moving his upper body around in a gesture.

"And I am king of the Underworld! This is not your realm!" Klaus shouted back, thrusting his right arm downward.

"Not yet, boy." Mikael sneered. "I will have it, and when I do, you will be nothing. Not even a memory." He stated in a low tone.

Klaus clenched his jaw tight, and moved his eyes away from Mikael. "You will not take this realm from me." He stated through his teeth.

Mikael scoffed. "I already have, boy." He stated, coldly. "Your little army is no match for me, and your so called brothers will never help you. You are alone, Niklaus, and you will be forever alone because no one, not even your family will love you." He added with a sold smile.

Klaus refused to show his pain at his stepfather's words. He lifted his head high, and stepped back. "We'll see." He whispered, walking away from Mikael.

Mikael scowled. "You will never beat me!" He shouted at Klaus' back.

Klaus stilled, and turned his head over his shoulder. "We'll see." He stated, distantly.

Mikael waved his hand and disappeared in a cloud of smoke.

Klaus closed his eyes, bringing his right hand up to the mouth, wiped it solemnly.

"He will discover the truth soon, Niklaus."

Klaus sighed, glancing at his brother, who just appeared beside him. "What of the others?" He asked, stiffly.

Elijah nodded. "Kol will help." He answered, firmly.

Klaus nodded, looking around at the bodies. "Rebekah doesn't need to be here." He stated, harshly.

"She wasn't happy about it, but I told her." Elijah remarked, following Klaus' gaze.

Klaus clenched his jaw. "I promised them safety, if anything were to happen to them. I even created a special place for them." He whispered in defeat. "I failed them."

Elijah shook his head. "You did not fail them, Niklaus. They are at peace now. You must believe that." He stated, calmly.

Klaus remained silent. His body tense with agitation and anger. His eyes conveyed the look of someone who could kill anyone at that moment for the pain he was feeling. "Mikael destroyed their souls, Elijah. They will never be at peace." He whispered, turning away from the bodies.

Elijah sighed and nodded in understanding. Every time they seem to gain a foothold, they always get pushed back a few feet.

"When do we strike?" Elijah asked, watching Klaus stop.

Klaus smirked in a harsh way, and glanced over his shoulder. "Tonight"

~Present~

Caroline moaned as her arms were lifted straight out, and shackles were placed around her wrists. Her eyes slowly opened to find a tanned skinned man fastening the shackles.

"Who are you?" She asked her voice raspy and throat dry.

The man stopped, and glanced at her. "Alexander." He stated, firmly.

Caroline swallowed, trying to wet her throat. "What am I doing here?" She asked, feeling the shackles tighten around her wrists.

Alexander frowned. "He wanted you." He stated, simply.

"Why?" She asked, tensing slightly.

"You are Klaus' weakness. Without you, Mikael can defeat him." He stated, coldly.

She closed her eyes. This could not be happening. She opened her eyes when footsteps entered the dark cave where she was being held. She stiffened when she recognized Mikael with two other men.

"Hello, Caroline, I hope you're comfortable." He stated, mockingly.

She scowled at him. "Klaus will come for me." She stated with confidence.

He chuckled. "I'm sure he will. Unfortunately, he will come too late." He replied, coming closer.

Caroline stared at him. "What do you mean?" She asked, shifting her eyes to the others in the room, and then to him.

He smiled. "I'm going to kill you, Caroline, and I'm going to do it slowly and very painfully." He answered, with a cold smile.

Caroline felt her heart drop at his words. "Why would you do this to him?" She asked, breathlessly.

He scoffed. "Because he does not deserve happiness, and without you Niklaus will crumble." He answered, proudly.

She shook her head in disbelief at his words. She had to stay strong. She had to stay alive. Klaus was coming for her. She just knew he was. She just had to hold on.

She had to.

~X~

Klaus clenched the banister of the balcony until he felt the stone beginning to crumple. He had searched everywhere he thought Mikael would hide out, but with no such luck. He had to be somewhere.

He had to be.

He could not have just disappeared.

He closed his eyes. His heart was heavy with emptiness, and his soul was ripped in two. How could he find her with his heart missing?

"Klaus?"

Klaus straightened at the voice and slowly turned around. "What do you want, Stefan?" He asked, folding his arms over his chest.

Stefan sighed, and approached casually. "I heard about Caroline and Mikael. The other gods are in an uproar, and they are all supporting you." He stated, stopping within a few feet of Klaus.

Klaus nodded slowly. "I see." He whispered keeping his eyes focused on the far wall.

"I was told Elijah and Kol are arriving in a few hours to help you search for her." Stefan remarked, glancing at Klaus.

Klaus nodded. "A lot of good they will do." He stated, pushing away from the banister and began to pace.

"You'll find her, Klaus." Stefan replied, firmly, turning around to lean against the banister while watching Klaus.

Klaus nodded. "Before or after Mikael kills her." He stated, harshly, glaring at Stefan.

Stefan sighed. "I have faith in you, Klaus. You'll find her before any of that." He returned, crossing his arms carefully across his chest.

Klaus threw his head back. "How can you be so sure, Stefan?!" He shouted with a glare. "I failed to protect her! She is my wife, my soul, and she was taken from me!" He ranted, tears brimming in his eyes.

Stefan dipped his head. "I can be sure because with true love, anything is possible. You have to believe that. Trust your heart, Klaus. That is the only way you will find her. Believe me." He replied, sternly.

Klaus clenched his jaw. Maybe Stefan was right. Maybe he needed to just let his heart guide him. He glared at Stefan, and swallowed hard. "What if I'm too late?" He asked, harshly.

"Ask yourself this, Klaus. What would Mikael love to do to you?" Stefan asked in a cold tone.

Klaus' face clouded over. "To see me suffer." He whispered, though his voice was dark and cold.

"And how would he accomplish that?" Stefan asked, watching him carefully.

Klaus stiffened. "Kill Caroline in front of me." He stated, harshly.

"Then I suggest you need some help, and I am not talking about your brothers." Stefan remarked with conviction.

Klaus frowned. "What do you suggest, Stefan?" He asked, folding his arms across his chest.

Stefan smiled, and held out his right hand. In a flash of light, two three feet long rods appeared in his callused hand.

Klaus tilted his head to the side, and glanced at the rods. "What are they?" He asked, stepping closer to Stefan.

Stefan smirked. "Bidents."

Klaus' eyes widened. "What?" He whispered, his voice trailing off.

"Your mother requested they be made. She said they were the only things which could destroy Mikael. There are two. One for you and the other is for Caroline." He stated, firmly.

Klaus scowled slightly. He reached forward, and one of the rods floated to his hands. He felt the charge from the weapon sink in through his skin and into his veins. The cold metal felt right in his hands. He lifted his gaze to Stefan.

Stefan nodded. "I designed them both to only be used by the Lord and Lady of the Underworld, which is you and Caroline, no one else, but you two." Stefan added with a sly smile.

Klaus smiled for the first time since Caroline's kidnapping, but it wasn't a warm smile It was a cold, sinister smile. "You continue to amaze me with your talents, Stefan." He stated, lifting the rod in his hand.

Stefan smiled. "It's my job." He replied in return. "All you have to do to activate it is jerk it slightly, and the bident will form." He added, pointing towards the rod with his deformed arm.

Klaus nodded in understanding, and jerked the rod slightly. In a loud grating sound, the bident formed in his hand, and Klaus felt the power surge through the weapon to his body.

Stefan lifted his head in slight pride. He lifted the other bident. "I designed the bidents to find their owners, or the people they were designed. In other words, since this one was designed for Caroline, it will help you find her." He stated, firmly.

Klaus smiled as the words sunk in his heart. "Thank you, Stefan." He whispered, with a lonely tone.

"All you have to do is think of her, and allow your heart to guide the bident. It will do the rest." He returned, handing Klaus the bident.

Klaus nodded. "Thank you again." He stated more firmly.

Stefan smiled. "Find her, Klaus, and that will be thanks enough." He replied, moving to leave.

Klaus closed his eyes. Jerking the bident lightly, the bident dragged back to the three foot rod. He sighed, placing both rods on the banister, he lowered his head.

He had felt his power weaken momentarily a few moments ago, but he didn't mention it to anyone. No one could help him with this, for he knew exactly what was happening to Caroline.

Mikael was draining Caroline's power.

He didn't have much time. He had to find her.

~Millennia Ago~

Klaus slammed his fist in the wall in aggravation. He turned to his brothers and scowled. "Where is he?!" He shouted, causing his younger brother to jerk slightly.

"Mother said he would return in a few hours. She doesn't know where he went." Elijah stated, glancing at his other brother.

Kol Mikaelson, God of Music, Prophesy, and Love, frowned at his brothers. Dressed in a light colored tunic and slightly darker pants, he did not look the part of a fighter, but like his brother's he wanted his father gone.

"How are we to defeat him if we don't know where he is?!" Klaus demanded, whirling around with his back facing them.

"He'll return, Nik. You have to be patient." Kol remarked, with a smirk.

Klaus turned around and glared at his brother. "We have been planning this for years, Kol. I've been patient long enough." He stated in a dangerous tone.

Kol nodded, and brought his lips next to his teeth with a small smile.

"Kol's right, Niklaus, we must be patient." Elijah remarked, stepping between them.

Klaus pursed his lips, and growled lowly, turning away from them.

Kol shook his head at Elijah. Elijah nodded in understanding. Patience was not one of Klaus' virtues.

"Well, well, well, if it isn't my three sons. No, correction, two sons and one bastard." Mikael stated, as he appeared in the room. His clothes were covered in his black armor, and a long sword hung at his waist.

Klaus growled, but felt Kol's hand on his upper arm. "Steady, Nik." He whispered, calmly.

Klaus glared at his younger brother, but nodded.

Mikael sneered. "Poor Niklaus, always hiding behind others." He mocked, folding his arms over his chest.

Klaus stiffened. "I'm not hiding. Why don't you come over here and find out?" He mocked back, quirking his brows.

Mikael scoffed. "I shouldn't even waste my time on you." He stated, coldly.

Elijah shook his head, and began to position himself at Mikael's left. Kol had let go of Klaus' upper arm, and positioned himself at Mikael's right. Klaus remained in front of Mikael.

Mikael watched them move carefully in position and sneered. "You really think you can defeat me." He stated, pulling his sword out of its scabbard, and held it in his hands.

Klaus moved his eyes to his brother's and with a quick nod, they lunged.

~Present Day~

Caroline moaned into the darkness, as the shackles tightened and began to burn through her skin. Her eyes watered as the burning sensation ran through her body.

The shackles brightened to a fiery orange and flowed into the walls of the darkened caves. She closed her burning eyes, and tried to picture Klaus. The shackles tightened harder as the first image of Klaus came into her mind.

She screamed lightly at the pain, and opened her eyes.

Mikael smiled, coldly at her pain. "The shackles were designed to sap the energy of the gods. My father designed them before I killed him." He stated, casually.

"You killed your own father?" She asked her voice raspy and hoarse.

Mikael chuckled. "Of course, I did. I wanted to be king, and he was standing in my way." He replied, pushing himself away from the far wall. "It's a shame you have to die, my dear, but Niklaus has to learn his lesson." He added, shaking his head.

She scoffed, and bit back a groan as the pain came harder. "The only one who will die is you, Mikael." She stated, her voice getting stronger.

"No, I don't think so, dear Caroline." He whispered with a sneer. "You and Niklaus will die, but not before I have drained every last drop of your energy and light from you." He added, coldly.

She struggled against the shackles, but that only made them tighten even more. "If you want to kill us, then kill us, why torture us?!" She shouted, screaming at the last.

He smiled. "In order to reassert my place in the world, I need power. When my sons and Niklaus imprisoned me, they took away my power and distributed it amongst themselves, and I aim to take it back." He stated, defiantly.

Caroline's eyes widened. "The darkness…" She whispered, and Mikael nodded.

"The darkness is the only thing they left me with. You see, my dear Caroline, the darkness is me." He stated, smiling proudly.

Caroline felt her heart drop in her chest. She opened her mouth, but no words seemed to come out.

He chuckled, turning away from her. "When my sons decided to turn against me, I took certain measures to ensure that they would not imprison me forever." He began, walking to the other side of the wall.

"The Despair Fields." She whispered, lowly, when she realized what he was meaning.

He nodded. "I created the Despair Fields, at first to torture Niklaus, but when he became King or Lord of the Underworld," He began with distaste in his voice. "Then I discovered that my sons were planning to imprison me, I used the shackles to transfer my powers to the Fields, until the time came where I could return to my rightful place. Unfortunately it was not enough to bring me back completely. I still need power." He paused with a sinister smile. "Which is where you and Niklaus come in." He added, pointing at her.

"It's perfect." He whispered, smiling.

Caroline let her head fall forward. Hearing Mikael's plan, made her wish Klaus would not come for her. She would rather die at Mikael's hands than to allow Klaus to die.

Tears filled her eyes, when she heard Mikael leave her alone. As much as she wanted Klaus to find her, she didn't want him to die or get hurt. Pain entered her heart, and began to overshadow the pain from the shackles.

"Klaus, please be careful." She whispered, her voice filled with emotion.

"Please…" She began, feeling her mind go blank and her eyes grow dark.

~Millennia Ago~

The brothers stood outside the darkest part of Oblivion, and used their power to seal the prison, which held their unconscious father.

They lowered their hands as the stones closed up with a loud bang. Signaling it was finished.

"It's finished." Elijah stated, with a proud tone.

Klaus nodded, slowly, but he couldn't get rid of the feeling that it wasn't.

"You don't believe it is, do you, Nik?" Kol asked, looking at his brother.

Klaus slowly shook his head. "He's only in prison. He's still powerful."

"We took his power, Niklaus. He will no longer be a tyrant towards us or towards the humans." Elijah replied, clasping his brother on the shoulder. "You must believe that." He added, solemnly.

"I will when the day comes that he is destroyed completely." Klaus stated, harshly, turning on his heel and disappearing.

Kol sighed, and glanced at Elijah. "You know he's right. Father gave up too easily." He whispered, decisively, glancing at the cave.

Elijah inhaled deeply. "Have you seen something?" He asked, looking at his baby brother.

Kol smirked for a moment. "You know I can't tell you if I did, but…I will say that we should be ready." He replied, seriously.

Elijah nodded. "Then we shall be, for all our sakes." He stated, firmly.
