Hailey finished changing Blake's diaper on the couch and straightened up as he rolled off the cushions. "Blake Henry," she breathed while standing him up.
He giggled and ran over to his toys. He threw his new baby doll to the side and pulled out two dinosaurs, "Doo! Doo!"
Hailey groaned and rubbed her face, "Blake, that's your baby."
"Maybe you need to buy it a crib," Drew suggested from his spot on Jay's recliner as he watched TV.
"Yeah," Hailey said under her breath and walked to the kitchen.
"Doo," Blake brought the dinosaurs to Drew and put them on his lap.
"Hey, you're sharing," Jay said as he came down the stairs, "Good, Buzz. That's nice." He made his way to the kitchen and wrapped his arms around Hailey from behind, "I'll try and be home by lunch," he whispered in her ear before kissing her neck.
Hailey turned in his arms and immediately froze at the sight of him in his new uniform. Her hand lightly ran down his white shirt, "Wow."
Jay chuckled, "You like?"
Hailey nodded and grabbed his tie, "You should have weekend meetings more often."
Jay rolled his eyes, "No. I hate this. Last weekend I was spending time with all of you and Will and today Voight has to schedule some annoying meeting at the district."
"It happens," Hailey brushed her thumb over his bottom lip, "Sergeant stuff, right?"
"I guess," Jay sighed.
Hailey pushed up to press her lips to his, "I'll see you later."
"Yeah," Jay smiled against her lips then kissed her forehead.
"Go, don't be late," Hailey breathed.
Jay hummed and stepped back to wink at her before heading out. Not able to take her eyes off him, Hailey made sure to follow him to the door and watch him get in his truck. He spotted her in the window and waved as he drive away.
Hailey took a deep breath and rested her hand on her stomach.
Drew glanced back from the TV and pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket. He cleared his throat then said, "Mom?"
"Yeah, buddy?" she turned to face him with a smile.
"Do you want to go get ready?" Drew asked.
Hailey raised an eyebrow, "Excuse me?"
"Like with makeup," Drew bit his lip.
Hailey crossed her arms, "Why?"
"I…" Drew looked at the notes he'd scribbled down from his secret calls with Vanessa, "I think you're pretty with makeup."
"Am I not pretty now?" Hailey asked.
"No!" Drew said quickly then blushed, "I mean, you are always pretty, but…but mascara-"
"I'm wearing mascara," Hailey tilted her head to the side and spotted the small white paper in his hand, "What's that?"
Drew's eyes widened and he shoved the paper under his leg before putting his hands up, "I don't have anything."
Hailey narrowed her eyes, "Drew Alexander."
Drew made sure to grab the paper again and shoved it in his pocket as he stood up, "Let's go for a walk in the park. We can dress up."
"Dress up how?" Hailey stepped toward him.
"Like nice clothes," Drew shrugged, "It'd be fun. I'll go put mine on." He rushed past Hailey to the stairs and up to his room.
Hailey sighed and looked at Blake trying to cover himself in his stuffed animals, "Do you know what Drew wants to do?"
Blake giggled and put a teddy bear over his face.
Hailey smiled, "You're too silly for Mommy."
"Mom, come on!" Drew yelled down the stairs, "We need to get ready for our park date."
Hailey walked over to the stairs, "Now it's a date?"
"Yeah," Drew panted holding his iPad to his chest, "We're gonna do a park date. Come get ready!"
Hailey let out a breath then returned to pick up Blake, "He's up to something."
"Doo?" Blake looked around.
Hailey nodded, "Drew. Drew's doing something secret."
Jay sat in the conference room nervously pulling at his tie trying to distract himself from the empty seats around the table. He'd had meetings with Hank and the superintendent before, but usually those were pretty informal – he hadn't had one in a conference room yet, this seemed very formal. He didn't even know what it was for. He'd just gotten an email on Thursday from Hank saying they needed to meet on Saturday at 10am in the big conference room at Ivory Tower. There was no explanation and Hank wasn't offering anything to help calm his nerves. He'd be lying if he said he wasn't worried about being fired right now.
The door finally opened and Hank walked in not wearing his uniform, but rather a button down and jeans. He smirked, "What're you wearing?"
Jay stood, "You told me we were having a meeting here, I figured I needed to dress up."
"You look fine on a normal day," Hank shook his head, "You just look ridiculous now."
Jay sighed, "So, what's going on? Can you tell me now?"
"Let's go for a ride," Hank held the door open.
"What about the meeting?" Jay asked.
"It's moved," Hank said.
Jay couldn't stop his face and glared at Hank, "What the hell's happening?"
Hank shrugged, "Meeting moved, let's go. Grab your stuff." He chuckled at Jay's portfolio folder, pen, and pad of paper on the table.
"This is pretty rude," Jay mumbled as he gathered his stuff, "You could have given me some sort of head's up."
"Well, I didn't get many directions either," Hank said.
Jay walked over to him, "What do you mean?"
"You'll see," Hank held the door for him.
Jay sighed and headed into the hallway, "All right, where are we going? I'll meet you there."
Hank shook his head, "I'll drive."
"You sure?" Jay asked.
Hank just nodded and pointed down the hall.
Jay rolled his eyes and led the way out of the building.
After Drew had several opinions on what Hailey needed to wear, finally saying her new pink pants and white blouse Vanessa had bought with her earlier in the week was good enough, and he'd made sure Blake looked 'nice' and 'clean' as well, they all walked out of the house just as Vanessa was pulling into the driveway.
"Hey!" she said and stepped out of her car, "It's my favorite family and they're looking very cute." She winked at Drew, but Hailey thought it was for her and shook her head.
"We were going to the park, but Drew's insisting we wear this, I don't want to get the new shirt dirty," Hailey said.
"Oh, you won't," Vanessa shook her head, "I'll drive you guys."
Drew easily hopped in the backseat, but Hailey just stared at Vanessa, "What do you mean?"
"I'll drive you to the park," Vanessa repeated, "Come on."
"Okay," Hailey sighed and glanced at Drew putting his seatbelt on, "What the hell is going on?"
Vanessa shrugged, "We're going to the park."
"Oh, so you just happened to be driving past our house at the exact time we were going to be leaving our house for this random walk in the park Drew is insisting on?" Hailey asked.
Vanessa grabbed Blake from her, "Just go grab his carseat and act like this is normal, please."
Hailey pursed her lips and turned back to Drew in the car. He smiled wide at her and waved, so she gave in and went to her car in the garage for Blake's carseat.
Jay stared out the window as Hank drove and quickly realized they weren't heading to the district or any other police stations in the city. "A call come through or something?" he asked.
"No," Hank answered.
Jay rolled his eyes, "Where-"
"Told you, we're going for a ride," Hank interrupted.
"Right," Jay breathed.
After another few minutes, Hank finally pulled the car into a parking lot and Jay froze.
Almost four years ago in this same park, there had been white chairs set up with sunflowers throughout all pointing toward a wedding arch with the lake as a backdrop. Today, there were a few tables set up that had those same white chairs around, but now the decorations were pink flowers, balloons, and a big sign that said 'Welcome Princess Halstead!'
Jay stepped out of the car and slowly asked, "What's happening?"
"Rojas is doing a thing," Hank said.
Jay weakly laughed and looked around seeing a few people from Firehouse 51, Will and a couple other doctors and nurses, and finally Trudy talking to Adam, Kevin, Kim, and Cara.
A car pulled up next to them and Vanessa jumped out saying, "Hey! Just in time!"
Jay did a double-take at her car when he realized Drew and Blake were in the backseat. He opened their door and said, "Do you two know what's going on?"
Drew laughed and nodded.
Blake smiled at Jay putting his hands out, "Dada!"
Hailey turned to look at them with her mouth gaping, "Jay…"
"I had no idea," he shook his head.
Hailey closed her eyes against the few tears that were forming and covered her face.
"Oh, Hailey," Vanessa hurried around to her side of the car, "It's okay. We all just wanted to celebrate you having a baby. It's not a big thing, mostly people just bringing diapers and clothes and wanting to eat appetizers. Drew said it should be princess food, so-"
"Drew helped?" Hailey asked quietly. She looked over Vanessa's shoulder at Drew standing there beaming at her.
Vanessa smiled, "Yeah, he was a huge help. Who do you think picked out that sign?"
Hailey laughed softly then stepped out of the car. She just shook her head then hugged Drew to her side, "Is this why you were so sneaky with your iPad this week?"
Drew blushed, "I just wanted to make sure you didn't find out about your surprise party. I was talking to Aunt Vanessa a lot."
"Well, bud, you definitely surprised us," Jay said as he came to join them.
Drew's smile grew and he looked at Vanessa who gave him a thumbs-up. "I hope you like it," he said.
Hailey breathed in and set a hand on her stomach quickly looking around the park. In all honesty, she wasn't a huge fan of people staring at her, but she appreciated the effort Vanessa put in and loved that Drew was a part of it. So she turned back to Drew and tapped his nose, "I know that I will love it."
He bounced on his heels then grabbed her hand, "Can I show you everything I helped with?"
Hailey laughed, "Yes, please."
As he dragged her away, Jay said to Vanessa, "Thank you, really."
Vanessa nudged his shoulder, "Anything for you two, you know that. When I told Voight to make sure you were in nice clothes, though, I didn't realize you'd go like nice nice clothes – looking professional Sergeant Halstead."
Jay rolled his eyes, "He told me we were going to a big meeting at Ivory Tower, what was I supposed to wear?"
Vanessa laughed and led him to where Drew was showing Hailey the pink cupcakes he'd picked out with little chocolate crowns on top.
"Mm," Blake said reaching for them, "Mm, mm."
"They do look yummy," Hailey smiled.
"They have strawberry frosting," Drew told Jay.
"Mom's favorite," Jay nodded.
Cara bounced over and patted Hailey's back, "You look really pretty, Aunt Hailey."
"Oh, thank you," Hailey smiled and hugged Cara to her side, "Aunt Vanessa picked it out. And you look adorable too."
Cara took a second to spin around in her blue dress, "Thank you. Mommy bought Princess a matching one – oops." Her eyes widened and she covered her mouth.
Hailey laughed, "It's okay, I'll pretend you didn't tell me."
Cara blushed, "Thank you. Secrets are hard."
Drew nodded quickly, "I had to tell Dr. Charles all about this on Tuesday because I couldn't handle the secret."
Vanessa put a hand on Hailey's back, "Should we get started then?"
Hailey looked around at everyone settling into seats then glanced at the pile of diapers and gifts just a few feet from where they were standing. She'd only felt this type of nervous feeling once before in her life and it was at the baby shower for Blake. Now, Blake was eating pink and purple M&Ms from Will's hand and the baby shower was for the baby inside her. She was the one growing the baby this time around.
And at least this time, she knew for sure that the baby would go home with her after she was born, she hadn't felt that same way at Blake's baby shower. She didn't quite feel like a fraud this time since it was very obvious she was having a baby, but it still lingered in the back of her mind since she did have a lot of stuff the newborn would need already left over from Blake.
But like before, she felt able to step forward and welcome the party because if all these people had those same thoughts that she was a fraud, they probably wouldn't have come.
"Yeah," she breathed, "I'm ready."
Vanessa clapped quickly and gently pushed her toward Jay standing with Will before grabbing Drew's hand and leading him where the wedding arch had stood the last time everyone had been gathered in this park. She waved at everyone until they sat and quieted down.
"Hi," she said, "Thank you for coming to Jay and Hailey's baby sprinkle. Oh my gosh, it's so cute. Okay! Well, I just wanted to welcome everyone before we got started, but this guy also wanted to say something." She stepped back and squeezed Drew's shoulder.
Drew shakily stepped forward and waved slightly, "Hi, um, hi." He blushed looking back at Vanessa. She smiled and nodded. He took a deep breath, "My mom is having a baby like actually having a baby from her insides not just adopting." He rubbed his face, "So…Aunt-Aunt Vanessa thought we could have a party and I helped. Thank you for bringing clothes for her – for the baby, I mean, her name's…well, I call her Princess, but my mom and dad have lots of options to pick from."
Hailey weakly laughed and nodded at him while Jay kissed the top of her head and smiled.
Drew smiled back at them then said, "I'm really excited to have a sister. Thanks Dad for putting her in Mom." He hurried over to hug Jay around the middle reaching for Hailey too.
"Thanks, bud," Jay said softly.
Hailey nodded, "That was really nice." She wiped her eyes and rubbed his back.
"Are you okay?" Drew asked.
Hailey sniffled, "Yeah, happy tears."
"Those again," Drew pursed his lips.
"Thank you for making this party," Hailey said, "It makes me and Dad really happy."
Jay nodded, "We appreciate it."
"Well, I love you," Drew shrugged.
"La la," Blake repeated.
Jay laughed, "Yeah, you too?" He kissed Blake's cheek, "You two are going to be the best big brothers ever."
"Oh, I completely agree," Hailey smiled.
"Hey," Adam cleared his throat and waved at them, "Can we eat yet or…"
Kim hit the back of his head, "Knock it off."
Adam chuckled, "What?"
"Go for it," Jay smirked, "I think we can start, right, Drew?"
"Right," Drew nodded quickly, "Come on, I picked out little sandwiches like princesses eat." He pulled at Jay's hand to drag him to a table.
Hailey took a second to look around at everyone who came to the party and had to blink back more tears before following them.
Jay carried the last bag of baby clothes into the nursery and let out a breath, "So our daughter has no excuse to ever buy any clothes for herself ever."
Hailey laughed and looked up from sorting through one of the bags Jay had already brought in, "At least for the first year."
Jay shook his head and rolled up his sleeves, "That was really nice of everyone. Were you expecting it?"
"Not at all, you?" Hailey tried standing up from the ground.
"Nope," Jay helped her stand, "All right, I'll go change and then we can figure out what's going on here and maybe order a crib."
"Wait," Hailey grabbed his arm. She took a deep breath and ran her hand down his chest, "What if you left the uniform on?"
Jay laughed, "What? It's like 4 o'clock, I'm not leaving my uniform on. I want to be comfortable."
Hailey shrugged, "The kids aren't home. Vanessa said she'd even take them to dinner after Build-a-Bear."
Jay nodded, "Even more reason to get to work on this nursery."
Hailey sighed and raised an eyebrow as she began slowly unbuttoning Jay's shirt, "Can I at least help?"
"With the nursery?" Jay asked, "I figured-"
"You are impossible!" Hailey laughed, "Jay, I want you. I want you. Right now. On the floor or on our bed, hell, I'll even try the shower. I want sex."
Jay stared at her then tried laughing, "What's going on?"
"You wearing this uniform is…all the things I love about you, so let's go," Hailey said.
Jay slowly smirked then lifted Hailey up to carry her to their room.
She laughed, "Careful, careful!"
Jay kissed her once she was sitting on the bed, "I love you too."
Hailey smiled against his lips, "Yeah? Even when I look like this?"
Jay chuckled, "Especially when you look like this. You're carrying my baby – a baby that we both made."
"And I really want to get back to that baby-making stuff," Hailey breathed. Her hands ghosted down his sides and settled on his hips where her fingers stroked along his belt.
"You want another baby?" Jay asked with a hint of a smile on his face.
Hailey rolled her eyes, "No, I want to practice making one. Why do I have to be so direct with you today?"
Jay laughed harder, "I'm joking, it's all fun."
Hailey worked at his belt buckle, "Well, no jokes. I'm pregnant and having some very serious thoughts about you in this uniform right now that I want to cool off before our kids get home."
"Okay, okay," Jay smiled and finished unbuttoning his shirt.
"Whoa," Hailey put a hand on his chest, "Let me do that."
Jay's eyebrows shot up, "I thought you wanted to get down to it."
"But I want to unwrap my present," Hailey said as she slid his belt off of him.
Jay held back a smirk, "Your present?"
Hailey glanced up at him while pulling his pants down, "Yeah." She smiled and tilted her head to the side, "I may have talked to Vanessa at the party and may have told her how I was feeling about you and she may have then suggested they do their Build-a-Bear thing today making you my present."
Jay laughed softly, "You're tricky."
"Or smart," Hailey smiled.
"All right," Jay put his arms out, "Unwrap me."
Hailey couldn't hold back her laughter as she stood up and kissed him, "You're such a dork."
"But you love me," Jay whispered.
"Oh, yes," Hailey slipped his shirt from his arms, "I really do."
When Vanessa opened the front door to let Drew inside, she smiled at the sight of Jay and Hailey on the couch watching a movie with Chinese food containers in front of them. "Hey," she said.
Jay looked over at them, "Hey! How was it?"
"Super fun," Drew answered and ran over, "I made Princess a bunny and I named her Sunny like sunflowers."
"I love that so much!" Hailey sat up and put her arms out, "Can I see?"
Drew passed her the bunny, "Buzz tried to make one."
"He did," Kevin said and set Blake in Jay's lap, "He made a super cool dinosaur."
"Raptor," Drew corrected, "I had to help him a lot with Uncle Kevin."
Blake reached for the box in Kevin's hand and whined.
"Here you go," Kevin handed him the red dinosaur and smiled when Blake immediately hugged it.
"It's a little scary," Jay chuckled.
"It's cute," Vanessa said, "He's been hugging it since he got it." She sat on the arm of the couch by Hailey, "How was your alone time?"
Hailey laughed softly and nodded, "Really good, thank you."
Jay winked at her then leaned around to look at Vanessa, "Thank you for today, really. Everything was great." Drew cleared his throat so Jay turned to him, "And you. Thank you for helping with the party."
"You're welcome," Drew smiled, "It was fun."
"Yeah, it was," Hailey nudged his shoulder.
"Am I good at surprises?" Drew asked.
Jay laughed, "Bud, you're getting better at surprises every day."
"Yes," Drew whispered.
Blake giggled and tried imitating him, but just made another "Sss" sound.
Hailey shook her head then kissed Drew's head, "Dad was right earlier, you two really are going to be the best brothers to this little girl."
"What's her name again?" Kevin asked.
"Secret," Hailey said at the same time Jay said, "Still not telling you."
"But you know?" Vanessa asked excitedly.
Hailey smiled at Jay, "I think so."
He nodded, "Almost a hundred percent."
"I mean, we still have practically this entire trimester to figure it out, but we're pretty convinced this is the right name," Hailey explained.
"Are you two keeping a secret now?" Drew asked.
Jay chuckled, "Yeah, bud, but it's definitely one of the names you told us."
Drew's face lit up, "Perfect."
Hailey hugged him to her side, "Just like you." She breathed in and watched Blake playing with the few scales on top of his dinosaur's head and smiled even more. It was an unexpected day, but it was just another thing in her life that was perfect at the moment.
