A/N: Hey! Sometimes I have ideas like 'hey why don't you write five mini stories and call it a chapter to fill space' and think they really will be mini and forget that I have a hard time being brief and it ends up being over 6.2k. This is one of those times. But I hope you like it!
Sunday
"Dada! Daada!"
Jay walked in Blake's room to see him standing up in his crib and whispered, "Buddy, you need to quiet down. Shh."
Blake nodded and covered his mouth, "Shh."
Jay took a deep breath, "Wanna go on a run?"
Blake tilted his head to the side.
Jay smiled, "Yeah, I think you're big enough now, let's try it out."
Hailey was waiting on the porch with Drew when Jay came around the corner with Blake in the jogger Hank had gotten them at the first baby shower.
"Hey," Drew laughed and hurried down the driveway, "Dad!"
Jay smiled and slowed down in front of the house. "Hey," he panted. He stepped around to look at Blake, "Doing okay, buddy?"
Blake smiled and clapped his hands.
Hailey handed Jay a water bottle, "How'd it go?"
"Good, I think," Jay took a long sip of water, "He was pretty quiet once we took off. We only did five miles."
"Only," Hailey smiled.
"I'll push him," Drew said and slipped around Jay to start pushing the stroller down the sidewalk.
"I don't wanna go far, Drew," Hailey told him. She grabbed Jay's hand as they began their walk, "My back kind of hurts from all the standing yesterday."
"Sure it wasn't me?" Jay asked.
Hailey smiled shaking her head, "Definitely wasn't from you. That was the best I'd felt in forever. I feel bad actually like I'd been holding out."
"Don't feel bad," Jay squeezed her hand, "You didn't know you would like it and I've been a little nervous too."
"You were nervous?" Hailey asked.
Jay nodded, "I knew you couldn't really go on your back and I didn't want to hurt you. I would have felt horrible."
Hailey smiled slightly and leaned into him, "It worked out, though."
"Yeah, it did," Jay chuckled, "I'd do it again."
Hailey laughed softly, "Me too. I just wish we could have some more alone time."
Jay let out a breath, "Yeah, that'd be preferred."
Drew stopped a couple houses in front of them to wait. They could hear Blake squealing in the stroller as they walked closer.
"We got kind of far," Drew explained.
"It's okay, we could still see you," Hailey smiled and put a hand on his back, "Let's go to the right up there."
"But we always go straight," Drew said.
Jay shrugged, "We can change it up."
Drew sighed and started pushing the stroller again, "All right."
"Anything you want to do this week?" Hailey asked.
"I want to go to the library and I want to eat pastitsio," Drew said.
Hailey laughed, "How do you plan on doing that?"
"Well, I figured you could make it," Drew answered.
Jay smiled and shook his head, "Not how you're supposed to ask for a meal."
"Oh," Drew blushed, "Mom, can you please make pastitsio for dinner this week?"
Hailey kissed the top of his head, "Yes, I can."
"Mom makes the best pastitsio," Jay said, "Once, we were fighting and she made it as like a peace offering and it looked amazing and I went to bring some upstairs so we could eat in bed, but then I tripped over the stairs and spilt it right there in the hallway."
Hailey laughed at the memory, "It was a bummer."
Drew shook his head, "That's a shame."
"It was," Jay sighed, "But thank god she made a lot and we had carpet cleaner."
"That's good," Drew nodded, "Once I spilt food and it wasn't good."
Hailey glanced at him, "When? Was it the cereal?"
Drew bit his lip, "No, but that was bad too."
Jay exchanged a look with Hailey, "When did you spill food?"
"Before I met you," Drew said quietly, "I had to bring…bring dinner to the table and I dropped the corn because it was hot. I got in trouble."
Hailey stopped walking and put a hand on the stroller so Drew would stop as well. She raised an eyebrow, "What happened to you?"
Drew couldn't look them in the eyes and shook his head.
"Drew," Hailey said.
"Hailey, he doesn't want to talk about it," Jay whispered.
"I want to know," Hailey hissed, "He's my kid now. I need to know."
Drew stared up at the two of them lightly scratching his arm before he mumbled, "I didn't get food."
Hailey briefly closed her eyes then asked, "For how long?"
"The next day," Drew said shakily, "Please…please don't do that to me."
"Honey," Hailey whispered and carefully made her way to the ground so she could be eye-level with him, "We will never do that, you know that."
Jay nodded, "We promise."
Drew nodded and blinked his eyes quickly, "Okay."
"Can I hug you?" Hailey asked.
Drew sniffled, "At home."
"Okay," Hailey smiled a little then tried standing. She huffed and grabbed the stroller.
"Here," Jay quickly helped her up and brushed off her pants.
Drew shakily wiped a leaf off her knee. He then looked up at her and took a deep breath before hugging her tightly.
Hailey smiled and closed her eyes. "I've got you, baby, I'll always be here for you," she whispered.
Jay smiled at them then wrapped his arms around the both of them. He kissed Hailey's forehead and whispered, "You're an incredible mom, Hailey Anne."
She smiled against his shoulder and released an arm to wrap it around him.
"Thank you for adopting me," Drew said softly.
"Bud," Jay cleared his throat, "Bringing you in our family and adopting you was the best decision of our life."
Hailey nodded, "Without you, we wouldn't know how to be parents. You taught us everything and you make us the happiest people in the world."
Drew smiled and stepped back wiping his eyes, "I'm sorry I got sad."
Hailey shook her head, "Sometimes it's okay to be sad."
Jay nodded, "And it's good to remember our pasts," he smiled slightly at Hailey, "Made us who we are."
"So they're important," Drew said.
"Exactly," Hailey poked his nose.
Blake yelled in his stroller and everyone hurried around to see him smiling and waving at a dog across the street. They laughed and watched him kick around hoping to get the dog's attention.
"I guess he has a good past, doesn't he?" Drew asked.
"Well," Jay took a deep breath, "He was in the hospital for a bit, but hopefully it wasn't too scary and he knows that we loved him."
"That's all we could do," Hailey said softly.
Drew nodded, "You two saved us from having bad lives." He fixed the straps around Blake then went to push the stroller again, "I'm ready to keep going."
Hailey shakily laughed, "Jay."
"I know," he pulled her to his side to kiss her head, "They saved us too."
Hailey smiled and nodded leaning into him, "They did."
Drew looked over his shoulder, "Still coming, slow pokes?"
Jay laughed, "Oh, really? Really? We're slow?"
Drew smiled and nodded.
"Oh," Jay scoffed and took off running toward him.
Drew yelled, "Hey, wait!"
Hailey laughed watching them. Jay was right. Drew and Blake saved them.
Monday
"You comfortable?" Jay asked as Hailey settled back on the table.
She nodded and slipped her hair from its ponytail, "Yeah, I'm okay."
"Yeah?" Jay straightened out her shirt, "You sure?"
"Jay," Hailey laughed, "I'm okay." She debated putting her hair up again, but Jay grabbed her wrist.
"Hey, let me try," he said.
She rolled her eyes, "No, it's fine. It'd probably be uncomfortable anyways, I'll leave it out."
"Would you want me to practice for when you actually have her?" Jay asked.
"Practice doing my hair?" Hailey raised an eyebrow, "Jay."
"Okay, okay, just saying," Jay put his hands up.
"Mhmm," Hailey grabbed one of his hands, "Just stay right here."
"Not going anywhere," Jay smiled.
The ultrasound technician stepped in the room and waved, "Hi there, how're we doing?"
"Good," Hailey quickly answered, "We're just really excited to see her."
"She's gonna be beautiful, I already know," the technician said with a smile.
Hailey laughed and slipped her shirt up so the technician could place the gel on her belly. She shuddered with another soft laugh.
"You okay?" Jay asked.
"Yeah," Hailey smiled, "Just cold. Every time."
Jay chuckled and kissed her head.
"All right," the technician said as she placed the wand on Hailey's stomach, "Where's she at today?"
Every sonogram felt special to Hailey, but she couldn't quite look away from this one all day. She could so clearly see the baby's nose and lips and tiny feet that she knew she was beautiful.
And she made her.
She didn't know how, but the little girl from Greektown with frizzy blonde hair and a sass that earned her one-too-many time-outs somehow pulled herself together to create a person.
Of course she didn't do it alone. She made this little girl with Jay. Jay was a large part of how she came to be. Thus, it was Jay's solid heart and soul that she knew Princess would have.
Plus, she really wanted the baby to have Jay's green eyes.
Maybe it was Drew talking yesterday about their family, but Hailey felt like it was time to frame one of the sonograms. So instead of driving to Vanessa's to pick up Blake once she'd left Jay at the district, she stopped at the store and bought a small frame that she then used to hold the sonogram.
That night, when pulling a pair of socks out of her dresser, Hailey stopped to stare at the three frames sitting right there.
The first held a picture of Drew from the first time they took him to the Lincoln Park Zoo. At the time, he wasn't even calling them 'Mom' and 'Dad' and had been living with them about twenty-four hours, but he looked adorable standing in the bird exhibit. He wasn't sunburnt yet in the picture, that'd come an hour later. He was just happy. It was easily one of Hailey's favorite pictures of Drew ever.
Blake was seven months old in the middle picture. He was sitting up by himself for the first time in the backyard of their old house on a white blanket with little Mickey Mouse drawings on it. All of them were clapping at him, Kevin and Vanessa had even been there, so his smile was wide and he was trying to copy them. Jay loved the picture so much he even printed it out to keep in his wallet.
Then the last was, of course, the sonogram of Princess that Hailey was still holding and staring at when Jay came in their room.
"God, I'm exhausted," he said and fell into bed.
Hailey glanced over at him, "How come? Didn't you sleep?"
"Yeah, but," Jay shrugged, "Long day after the appointment."
Hailey nodded and placed the frame back down, "Something happen?"
"Not necessarily," Jay put his hand out, "Just paperwork and looking at money stuff. Adam was an idiot today, he meant well, but, god, it annoyed me."
Hailey frowned and sat next to him taking his hand in hers, "What'd he do?"
"Just crappy handwriting," Jay sighed, "Usually I can read it, but none of us could figure it out and there were lots of phone numbers…whatever. None of us were really focused."
Hailey softened, "What were you distracted by?"
"You," Jay smiled, "And the baby."
Hailey looked back at the picture frames on the dresser, "Me too."
"She's gonna look like you," Jay said closing his eyes, "Little too. She's gonna be short," he chuckled, "And she'll be blonde with blue eyes. I just know it."
Hailey laughed softly at the sleepy smile on his face before adjusting the pillows behind him.
"Lay down," Jay said and pulled her arm.
Hailey laughed as she slid down against him. Once she was settled, she realized she was in direct eyesight of the framed pictures. She let out a long breath and whispered, "Jay?"
"Hmm?" he hummed.
"We're gonna have three kids," she said.
Jay smiled and brushed her fingers through her hair, "Yeah."
"Three lives," Hailey sat up as fast as she could, "Jay, we're going to be raising three humans."
His eyes widened, "Are you okay?"
Hailey was still staring at the pictures when she breathed, "Yeah…yes, yes." She laughed in disbelief and covered her mouth, "I…we're having three kids!"
"Yeah," Jay weakly chuckled and sat up with her, "How…"
"I can't believe it," Hailey whispered. She pushed off the bed to hurry over to the pictures. She grabbed them off the dresser to show Jay, "They're ours."
Jay smiled and nodded taking the pictures from her, "They are. Our kids."
"I…" Hailey took a deep breath and sat next to him, "I was always unsure on kids. Some days I wanted one then the next I couldn't imagine it and then I was wanting seven."
"We're gonna have to stop at three," Jay said quickly.
Hailey laughed and continued, "But what always held me back was my parents. I didn't think a girl who'd been abused and felt unloved for so long could raise kids and, while I'm not perfect, I really do think I'm a good mom."
Jay squeezed her hand, "Better than good, you're amazing."
Hailey smiled leaning into him, "We're parents and I'm really, really happy." She picked up Drew's picture, "Like look at him! He's amazing! He's smart, he's kind, he loves his siblings, what else could we want?"
Jay laughed and grabbed the frame with Blake's picture, "And him? Freaking adorable. I could watch him all day, and, honestly, I feel like he's gonna be in soccer or baseball, so I'm looking forward to staring at him during tournament weekends."
Hailey's smile widened and she picked up the last frame with the sonogram, "And we made her."
Jay quickly laid down and fit himself between Hailey's legs. He kissed her stomach, "Little girl, baby bird, Princess."
"Oh god," Hailey laughed, "She has too many names."
"Don't forget her actual name, too, which has a nickname or two built in," Jay said.
Hailey shook her head and put her hands on her stomach, "She is so loved, though, I love her so much and I know you and the boys and our friends do too."
"So much," Jay lifted Hailey's shirt and lightly ran his fingers along her stomach. He spotted her stretch mark, but didn't say anything, he just rubbed his thumb over it briefly before kissing just above her naval.
Hailey smiled and settled back against the pillows, "I can't wait to hold her."
"Do you think she's going to be small?" Jay asked.
Hailey let out a breath, "For the sake of my body, I hope so, but after Blake, I will take a ten-pound baby."
"Oh," Jay chuckled, "That'd be a lot."
"It's my body," Hailey rolled her eyes.
"Hey, I know," Jay moved to sit next to her, "I wish I could take the pain from you."
Hailey bit her lip and glanced at him, "Yeah?"
"Of course," Jay nodded, "I don't like the idea of you being in that much pain."
"So…" Hailey trailed off then took a deep breath, "What're your thoughts on, um, epidurals?"
"Terrifying," Jay shook his head, "That needle is supposedly huge. I don't know much about it honestly, but, yeah, those scare me."
Hailey slowly nodded and her hand ghosted over her stomach, "Okay."
"Your body, though, just like you were saying," Jay rubbed her thigh, "I'll support whatever."
Hailey slightly smiled, "Thank you."
"Mhmm," Jay caught her lips in his briefly before whispering, "Our talk yesterday morning…the boys are asleep."
Hailey laughed, "I thought you were exhausted."
"I can always wake up for you," Jay smirked.
Hailey laughed harder and kissed him, "I cannot say the same."
"Oh my god," Jay gently pushed her away, "Nice."
Hailey smiled, "Maybe this weekend. Like I said, my back…you're exhausted…kids just went to sleep…"
Jay chuckled and laid on his back, "Fair. Come here, though, I'll try and help your back."
"Thank you," Hailey pulled her body pillow closer and laid against it so Jay's fingers could slip under her shirt.
"When'd we get old?" Jay asked.
Hailey laughed into her pillow, "We're not old."
Jay smiled and kissed the back of her head, "If you believe that, sure."
Hailey closed her eyes, "Three kids. We have three kids."
Jay wrapped his arms around her, "We do. Three amazing kids."
"Holy crap," Hailey breathed.
Jay chuckled, "It'll be okay."
Hailey hummed in response relaxing back into his arms.
Three kids.
She did it.
Tuesday
Vanessa knocked on Jay's office door before stepping in, "You got a minute?"
Jay looked up from staring at blueprints to an old warehouse, "Yeah, you okay?"
Vanessa glanced to the gash on her arm Will had just stitched up, "Yeah, it's fine. Stung, but," she shrugged.
Jay nodded, "Good. I finished filling out Trudy's form for you, just need you to read it over and sign."
"Thanks," Vanessa breathed grabbing it from him.
Jay smiled a little and went back to the blueprints.
"So," Vanessa cleared her throat, "Will and I were talking about you."
Jay put his pencil down, "Really?"
Vanessa pulled a chair over and sat in front of his desk, "Thoughts on a babymoon?"
Jay shook his head, "I don't think we're doing that. Didn't work out last time."
"But this time there's no chance the baby will come early," Vanessa said.
"You don't know that for sure," Jay pointed out, "Crazy things could happen."
Vanessa sighed, "You need to stop living in fear."
"I'm not living in fear," Jay said, "Hailey and I just don't think it's right for us. We have Drew, he's got a lot going on, and there's Blake, he's young."
Vanessa rolled her eyes, "Really? A kid with a schedule and young boy? Those are pretty stupid excuses."
"Still your boss," Jay raised an eyebrow.
Vanessa waved him off, "I told Hailey this, but why don't you just do a long weekend?"
"Where?" Jay asked, "Hailey can't fly right now, a Wisconsin trip just isn't worth it for three days and I don't think she'd be comfortable sitting in a car for that long."
Vanessa smiled and took her phone out of her pocket, "I'm glad you asked."
Jay laughed, "Oh, really?"
Vanessa nodded, "Okay, I just sent you the list Will and I made."
"So Will's in on this too?" Jay asked.
"I told you that," Vanessa said, "Keep up."
"You're pushing it, Rojas," Jay glared at her.
"Whatever," Vanessa stood up, "Just think about it, okay?"
Jay took a deep breath, "Sure." He glanced at his computer just as it dinged with the email from Vanessa.
She waved and stepped out of his office.
Jay bit his lip and hesitantly clicked on the email with the links to local Chicago hotels and even a few bed and breakfasts around Illinois where they could spend a weekend. He was surprised that some of them were even highlighted because they had openings that weekend.
He rubbed his face thinking about it.
He wanted Hailey to feel comfortable and relax. She deserved that. He really didn't have much against a mini vacation even if it was just fifteen minutes away downtown. It was Hailey who kept saying how nervous she was about it, but maybe after the past few days she'd change her mind…
Or be completely against it.
After Drew finished therapy, Hailey decided to stop by the district and surprise Jay much to Drew's enjoyment.
"He's going to be shocked," Drew laughed, "We haven't been here in a long time."
"I know," Hailey smiled.
"Mama," Blake sighed and kicked around as she carried him into the building.
"You're not walking by yourself," Hailey said.
Blake whined and pulled her hair, "Mama."
"Hey, ow," Hailey winced, "No."
"You're being inappropriate and rude," Drew said with a poke to Blake's side.
"I think he's hungry too," Hailey explained. She waved to Trudy and pointed toward the stairs.
"Oh! Sergeant Trudy!" Drew hurried over to the desk, "How're you?"
Trudy smiled and winked at Hailey, "I'm good, how're you?"
"I'm excited," Drew said quickly, "We're going to see my dad and then we're going to go make pastitsio."
"That sounds delicious," Trudy nodded.
"Hi!" Blake yelled.
"Hi," Trudy waved.
Hailey laughed, "Come on, you two, Dad's gonna hear us down here if we're loud, quiet down."
"Shh," Blake said and covered her mouth.
Hailey looked at him and raised an eyebrow.
Blake giggled then put his hands over his face.
"Buzz is getting on mom's nerves today," Drew explained.
Trudy smiled, "Well, your mom's doing a lot, don't you think she could use a break from sassy kids?"
Drew spun to look at Blake, "Dif you hear Sergeant Trudy? You're sassy."
"Let's go, buddy," Hailey sighed. She put her hand out while smiling at Trudy.
Trudy winked and buzzed the stairs.
Drew grabbed her hand so they could walk up to the bullpen together. At the top, he let go and ran through the empty desks right into Jay's office.
"Dad!" he yelled.
Jay looked up then smiled, "Hey!" He quickly stood and hugged Drew to his side, "What're you doing?"
"Seeing you," Drew answered slipping from his arm. He sat on the couch, "I just talked to Dr. Charles."
"How'd that go?" Jay asked.
"Good," Drew shrugged.
Hailey came walking in holding Blake's hand so he could walk alongside her, "Hi, Daddy."
"Hi," Blake repeated and stumbled into Jay's legs.
"Hey, bud," Jay picked him up, "What's going on?"
"I told you, we're here to visit you," Drew swung his legs.
"I was asking Buzz," Jay said.
Hailey laughed softly and walked around to sit in his desk chair, "We were passing by, so I figured why not?"
"Made my day way better," Jay smiled.
Hailey smiled back before glancing around his desk. She couldn't help it. She liked being involved and seeing what was happening. The blueprints told her he was planning some sort of raid, but the tab on his computer opened to a page titled 'Best Babymoon Getaway Package Deal' at the Beall Mansion. She glanced to Jay sitting next to Drew so he could hear all about his therapy session before scrolling through the website.
She didn't know how she felt about it. It seemed really fancy, like way fancier than anything they'd done before and she thought they'd done nice stuff, but monogrammed robes, a pillow menu, and massages was a lot. Plus, she was still pretty stuck on the idea that they shouldn't go on a babymoon. She thought Jay was on the same page, but maybe not and that confused her.
"Mom," Drew said exasperated.
Hailey blinked and looked at her, "Yeah?"
Drew sighed and tilted his head back, "Don't you listen to me?"
"Stop," Jay raised an eyebrow.
Hailey blushed, "I'm sorry, what were you saying?"
"That I'm hungry," Drew said, "When are we going to go home?"
Hailey stood from the desk, "We can head out now."
"No," Blake whined as Jay stood as well and held him out to Hailey, "No, Dada, no."
"I'll be home soon," Jay said and kissed his head before passing him over, "Go make dinner with Mommy and then I'll see you again."
"What time?" Drew asked.
"Uh, let's say six," Jay answered.
"Plenty of time," Hailey kissed Jay's cheek, "See you later."
"Mhmm," he smiled and squeezed her arm as she slipped from his office with Drew.
As much as Blake was pushing Hailey's buttons throughout the day, he completely softened at night and was attached to her after his bath. She was soaking it in while rocking him in his room with his small hand lightly touching her face as he listened to her heart beat under his own cheek.
Hailey closed her eyes and relaxed to the feeling of him falling asleep on top of her. Her fingers brushed through his soft hair to help lull him to sleep.
Jay knocked lightly on the door prompting her to open her eyes. "Hey," he said softly, "He asleep?"
Hailey shook her head and lightly patted Blake's back. He mumbled into her shirt as he tried curling up further against her.
Jay came over to sit on the footstool, "Can we talk?"
Hailey raised an eyebrow and pointed toward Blake.
Jay chuckled softly, "Okay." Instead of leaving, though, he just sat and waited until Blake's eyes closed for good and his lips parted in sleep.
"What is it?" Hailey whispered.
"Vanessa sent me some stuff on mini babymoons that we could do," Jay said.
Hailey breathed in, "I saw that."
Jay smirked, "I knew you were looking on my computer."
Hailey rolled her eyes, "Whatever. What about it though?"
"Well," Jay shrugged, "Do you want to go?"
Hailey frowned and looked down at Blake.
Jay tilted his head watching her for a moment then whispered, "He'll be okay."
Hailey weakly laughed, "Will he? He didn't do well last time we tried going on a vacation just us."
"Can't blame his birth on him, Hails," Jay pointed out.
Hailey rubbed Blake's back, "Yeah."
Jay squeezed her knee, "I want to spend some time with you before she comes. We had fun last weekend, so why wouldn't we want that again? We're definitely not going to want to leave them for a while once she's born."
Hailey let out a breath, "I guess that's true."
"And Will's offering babysitting services," Jay said.
Hailey smiled slightly, "I do like that. Drew would be fine, hopefully."
"So, Hailey Anne Halstead, would you please go on a vacation with me?" Jay asked.
Hailey laughed, "I-"
Blake stirred against her and made soft noises into her shirt.
"Oh, shh, shh, it's okay," Hailey whispered, "Mommy's here. I'm sorry, baby boy."
He settled down and fell back asleep after a minute going limp again in her arms.
"Sorry," Jay chuckled.
Hailey smiled and shook her head. She stroked her hand over Blake's back and said softly, "I'll think about it, okay?"
"Yeah," Jay nodded, "Of course." He stood to kiss her forehead then dropped another kiss on Blake's head, "I'm gonna go make sure Drew's ready to shower."
"Okay," Hailey breathed, "See you soon."
"Gonna hold him for a little longer?" Jay asked with a smile.
Hailey nodded and hugged Blake close to her.
Jay's smile widened and he kissed her head again before walking out of the room.
Hailey relaxed back into the glider and closed her eyes.
Leaving Blake for one night, let alone two or three, wasn't going to be easy, but Jay was right. After the baby was born, there was no way she'd want to take off for a weekend. Maybe now really was their time.
Wednesday
"Hey, Mrs. Halstead."
Hailey turned from picking out clothes for Drew to see Stella walking toward her. She smiled, "Hey."
Stella stopped next to her cart, "That's really cute."
Hailey glanced at the dinosaur polo she was holding and laughed, "It is. He put on one of his shirts from the Fall now that it's getting a little warmer again and it was just a little too short."
"So he's growing big and tall?" Stella asked smiling.
"Well, taller," Hailey corrected with a laugh, "He's still one of the smaller ones in his class."
"Is he okay with that?" Stella watched Blake chewing on his teething ring in the cart.
"I don't know," Hailey sighed while dropping the shirt in the cart, "I don't think he really cares, but he has asked Jay why he has to be short and he's not always happy with Jay's answer that he'll grow in the future."
"He'll catch up," Stella nodded. She smiled at Blake waving at her. "And this guy? How's he? He was adorable at the party the other day. Kelly wouldn't stop talking about him."
Hailey smiled and brushed his hair back from his eyes, "He's really good. I can't believe how fast he's growing."
Stella shook her head, "I still remember when we stopped by once you brought him home. He was so tiny and now he can run and has teeth and talks."
"Yeah," Hailey breathed and placed a hand on her stomach.
Stella raised an eyebrow, "What about you, Mama?"
"Mama," Blake repeated with a giggle.
"Jay…" Hailey leaned against the cart, "I already know what you're going to say."
Stella laughed, "Lay it on me."
Hailey smiled slightly, "Well, Vanessa told me that Jay and I should go on a babymoon and just spend a weekend together. I don't really want to leave Blake and Drew, but I do want to spend time with Jay. She talked to him too and now he's on board. I'm just stuck."
Stella nodded, "And you think I'm going to tell you to go?"
Hailey held back a laugh and said softly, "Yeah."
"You're right," Stella smiled, "But if you don't want to go this weekend, don't go. Go when you're ready. I think you should spend alone time with Jay. If you two aren't solid together, you're not going to be solid as parents, you know? At least, that's my perspective on having kids. The parents need to be a team. I know you and Jay are awesome, but alone time is okay. The kids will understand."
"I hope so," Hailey breathed. She brushed her thumb over Blake's cheek. "We had alone time this weekend after the party and…wow."
Stella laughed, "Mommy and Daddy time?"
"Exactly," Hailey smiled.
Stella shrugged, "Then do it. Literally."
Hailey rolled her eyes, but still laughed and rubbed her stomach where the baby started kicking, "I'm leaning toward it."
Stella lightly grabbed her arm, "I'm telling you, Hailey, I really don't think you'll regret it. You two will have time just together in the peace and quiet, plus you could talk about planning for this little girl. Did you talk about getting an epidural with him yet?"
"Um, sort of?" Hailey breathed in, "I brought it up and he said it's terrifying, but that it's my choice. I don't know."
"He needs to get over it," Stella said, "Tell him to suck it up."
Hailey weakly laughed, "I can't do that."
Stella stared at her and debated her next words before saying, "Okay, but…even if he's scared of the needle…he should still be able to support you."
Hailey nodded slightly, "I know, and I think he would. He's been super supportive, really."
"You're saying Jay Halstead is being a supportive husband to the woman he's head-over-heels for?" Stella jokingly gasped, "I'm shocked."
Hailey laughed and shook her head, "Yeah, yeah."
Stella smiled and squeezed Hailey's arm, "Trust him."
"I will," Hailey smiled back and looked at Blake.
He held out his teething ring and babbled softly.
"No thank you," Hailey shook her head, "Very nice though."
Blake watched her then put the ring back in his mouth. He reached for Stella with his hands opening and closing.
"Hi, hi," Stella smiled and lightly held his hands, "You're the cutest, aren't you? Your mom and dad love you so much and they'll have so much fun on vacation, right? Do you want that?"
Blake spit out his ring then said, "Mama? Dada?"
Stella nodded, "Mommy and Daddy."
Blake pointed to Hailey and giggled, "Mama, la la."
Hailey relaxed and kissed his head, "I love you too."
Stella stepped back and held up her basket of cleaning supplies, "I should head out, but, seriously, go on vacation. You deserve it. And I guess Jay does too."
Hailey smiled and nodded, "Thank you."
Stella winked, "Text me. We'll get lunch once you get back."
Hailey laughed, "Sure."
Stella waved at her and walked away.
Hailey took a deep breath and looked at Blake, "Well, what do you think? Should Mommy and Daddy go away this weekend?"
Blake shrugged and covered his mouth as he giggled.
"Yeah," Hailey sighed, "I don't know either." She turned to grab one last shirt off the rack for Drew then couldn't help it and went to the baby clothes to pick out an outfit, or two or three, for both Blake and the baby.
Hailey sat next to Drew at the kitchen table as he practiced his multiplication. She watched him speed through the worksheet. He was good at math, he could do it with his eyes closed, but she was still nervous he wasn't doing it right. In the end, though, he always got the right answer somehow. It blew Hailey and Jay's minds every time.
When he finished his worksheet, he slid it to Hailey reluctantly so she could check it. He sighed watching her, "Mom, I'm smart."
"I know, I know," she said quietly while her finger ran along the page.
Drew put his chin in his hand and impatiently waited. He wanted to sit outside and bird watch, but rules were rules and he had no choice but to wait until Hailey was finished.
When she did, she said, "Okay, here-"
Drew took the paper back and shoved it into his folder.
"Whoa, hey, wait," Hailey grabbed his hand, "I want to talk first."
"Mom," Drew groaned.
"Give me a second," Hailey raised an eyebrow, "This is important. I want to know what you think of spending a weekend, maybe this one or the next one, with Uncle Will."
Drew froze, "With Uncle Will? Like I'd go to his house?"
"No, he'd come here," Hailey said, "He'd stay with you and Blake."
"Why?" Drew asked.
"Dad and I sort of want to take a small vacation," Hailey explained, "We want to go away and spend time just us before your sister's born."
"Oh," Drew sat back in his chair, "Why?"
Hailey smiled slightly, "Because we love each other and…" she thought back to what Stella had said earlier, "We want to make sure we are all set before Princess gets here. We want to be a prepared team."
"Huh," Drew slowly nodded, "Didn't you try to do this before Blake was born?"
"Yes," Hailey took a deep breath, "So we want to try again."
Drew stared at her then shrugged and stood up, "Okay."
"Yeah?" Hailey asked.
Drew nodded, "It wasn't awful last time because all Uncle Will did was give me breakfast and I got Buzz in the end, so you can do it again."
"Well, Drew," Hailey tried, but he was already hurrying outside with his notebook in hand. She groaned quietly and rubbed her face.
"Mama," Blake said. She looked up to see him toddling into the room with a small book in his hands. He held it up to her.
Hailey smiled, "You want to read?"
"Mama," Blake passed her the book then tried climbing onto a chair.
"Well, wait," Hailey stood and grabbed him, "Let's go sit on the couch and read." As she carried him into the living room, she glanced outside to see Drew sitting in the middle of the grass looking around. She frowned, but quickly focused back on Blake when he pulled her hair.
Maybe Drew truly was fine with them going on vacation. That'd be ideal.
Thursday
Hailey went to sleep on Wednesday night debating the babymoon. She wanted Jay to herself, but she also didn't know how she'd be leaving Blake alone for the first time, but then she thought about what Stella said and how Drew reacted and maybe it really would be worth it.
She woke up just past 1am and knew exactly what they needed to do regarding the babymoon. She grunted as she rolled over then patted Jay's arm. "Wake up," she whispered.
He turned his head to the other side and mumbled.
"Jay," she hissed, "Wake up."
"Sleeping," he yawned.
Hailey sighed and shook his shoulder, "Jay Halstead."
He suddenly sat up with sleep still evident on his face and said, "Is the baby here?"
Hailey rolled her eyes, "No."
"Are you in labor?" Jay wiped his hands over his eyes, "We didn't pack a bag."
"Shut up," Hailey laughed. She then paused and frowned, "We should probably do that."
"Now?" Jay asked.
Hailey shook her head and turned on her bedside table, "I want to go on a babymoon."
Jay blinked through the sudden light, "What?"
"I want to go on a babymoon," Hailey repeated, "Let's go."
Jay looked at her through hooded eyes then laid down, "You need to go to sleep."
"Jay," Hailey hit his arm, "I'm serious. Grab your phone, let's book it for this weekend."
"It's too early for this," he groaned. He put his pillow over his face, "I have to work in the morning."
"Well, I can't sleep until we book this, so come on," Hailey said.
Jay let out a breath then sat up again to grab his phone, "You sure you're not in labor?"
"Don't be an idiot," Hailey looked over his shoulder as he opened his email, "I still have two months – over two months. We've got a while."
"Mhmm," Jay hummed, "Okay," he yawned, "Let's see what we've got."
Hailey rested her head on his shoulder and watched as he checked hotel and bed and breakfast reservations for that weekend. Some were completely booked, but others weren't, so they weren't completely out of luck. Within an hour, they decided where they were going to go and Jay had the room booked. He was then again passed out in their bed next to Hailey a minute later.
She couldn't sleep, though, she was too excited.
They were finally going to get their babymoon.
