Baby on board
Chapter six
Harry enjoyed the rest of the Yule holidays with his new husband in their rooms. They didn't leave once and had Dobby bring them food instead of going to the great hall. Shortly after though, when classes had just started, right after their first defence lesson, Snape keeps Harry behind. Draco whispers that he'll go with his guard dogs to his next class before kissing Harry's cheek and leaving his husband alone to talk with his father. Harry isn't sure if he should be grateful for the courtesy or angry about it. He still isn't sure if he wants to talk to Snape about the issue of him being his biological father. Especially since James must have known, considering what Snape hears Sirius talk about, and still wanted Harry as his son.
or a moment, neither of them says anything, even after the door closed behind the last student. It's silent for a little over two minutes before Severus sighs saying "Draco mentioned that the goblins know from where your connection to the Prince line comes."
"What if?" Harry asks.
"Why did you pretend otherwise?" Severus asks.
"Why did you?" Harry asks in return. "You weren't surprised I got it. Not really anyway. You knew that somehow, you're my father. I don't know for how long, but you knew and never uttered a single word. You#ve never told me about it or shown any interest in it. Why?"
"What good would it do? I'm a spy and I have to do things, most o which I'm not proud of." Severus sighs. "And I'm pretty sure you hated me by the time I found out, which was shortly after occlumency training stopped. I had no idea before that."
"You could still have said something." Harry replies moving towards the door "You choose to ignore it, why should I do anything else? Now excuse me, I have to go, classes, you know." And with that, he leaves. It is the last time Snape tries to keep him. Harry is sure that with the way things are, mostly meaning that Snape is a spy and has to act to hate Harry, there really isn't much of a point in tackling that problem right now.
And while Draco notices the longing his godfather occasionally shows when looking towards Harry, though only those that know him well would notice, Draco doesn't interfere in their relationship or lack thereof.
Draco is too worried about his own relationship with Harry anyway. Some days Draco bitches around for nothing just to burst into tears soon after. His hormones making life hell for everyone around him, especially Harry who still tries to be the perfect husband. Draco very much doubts that anyone ever had a better partner and often he cries feeling guilty about an earlier bitching phase or about getting Harry to get him the silliest things.
At the same time, Draco sometimes gets annoyed with Harry's perfection. Harry is around almost all the time and if he isn't one of his friends is. Even when Harry meets Dumbledore in the evenings Hermione and Ron are there in his rooms to keep Draco company or to get him whatever he needs. It is helpful especially the further along the pregnancy goes but it also annoys Draco to be under constant supervision.
It also makes him worried about becoming a burden. Especially when Harry starts to be more careful and hesitant when Draco tries to seduce him. Around mid-May Draco completely stops trying and for about a month nothing but the occasional kiss on the cheek happens. Making Draco even more worried that Harry regrets their wedding. Maybe because of his hormones, or because he's getting too big for Harry's taste. Draco only hopes it will get better once the pregnancy is over and his hormones and figure are back to normal. He doesn't really dare to talk to Harry about it, terrified that Harry will confirm that he regrets it already.
One evening when Harry is gone to do something for Dumbledore, Draco even wonders if that is true and worries that Harry is with someone else. As usual by now, Ron and Hermione babysit him, adding to Draco's annoyance. After just fifteen minutes of silently listening to their attempts to get him involved in a discussion between them, he blows up and kicks them out before he goes to bed hoping he won't even notice if Harry returns late. He feels like he's suffocating under their constant protection. He knows that they mean well, but it still gets unbearable.
Despite being in bed early, Draco is still wide awake by the time Harry finally returns. Much later than Draco had assumed. Certainly later than any of the other times Harry had gone to Dumbledore. Increasing Draco's fear that Harry is secretly meeting someone else behind his back this soon after their wedding. He doesn't think that Harry is generally the kind to cheat and more likely to tell him, but maybe he just doesn't want to upset Draco this close to giving birth? Maybe he'll tell Draco after the baby is born. Unknown to Draco, Harry had heard what happened from Ron and Hermione who had waited outside for him with the cloak to tell him about Draco's fit and to be there in case something happens to Draco before Harry gets back. He is getting close enough that complication could lead to premature birthing.
Harry sneaks into their room assuming Draco to be fast asleep by now. He cuddles closer moves a hand through Draco's soft blond hair and sighs before moving a bid away again. "If you can't stand to be close to me already, feel free to move back to Gryffindor tower," Draco growls, unsure what made him say that out loud.
"What?" Harry asks shocked not only about Draco's words but the fact that he is awake at all. "Why would you think such a silly thing? I want to be with you!"
"You barely touch me and you can't really tell me that Dumbledore made you stay out this long. It's way past curfew!" Draco feels tears well up in his eye.
"I came straight from him," Harry says honestly. He had been with Slughorn and Hagrid before but he had brought the memory up and watched it right after. "I'm sorry it took so long. I had to get a memory from Slughorn about Voldemort first and it took longer than I anticipated. But that's all, I swear. And about the barely touching you part. Do you remember how you told me not too long ago to shut up because our child was dancing on your bladder every time I spoke? It just made me realise that our baby hears everything we do and every time I see you I want to kiss you but when I kiss you I want more and I really don't want our child to hear that! So, I step back whenever I get tempted by you, which obviously is all the time."
Draco turns to frown at him. "And you really think I'd buy that crap?"
"It's the truth." Harry promises "I obviously should have talked to you about it and I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you but when you stopped recently, I just thought that you didn't feel like it because of the pregnancy anyway. And I really don't want to pressure you. Not after everything you've already been through!"
"And why did you only stop when I did?" Draco points out the flaw in Harry's explanation "Our kid did hear us when I seduced you before, though I highly doubt it had any idea what was going on out here. But you started to keep your distance way before there was nothing between us!"
Harry blushes and just groans "I know that our baby heard that but really, I couldn't help it. I tried but do you have any idea how irresistible you are? I couldn't stop myself from reacting to you. Your kisses and touches just stop my brain from working properly so I temporarily forget that I wanted to resist you, never mind remember why! I felt bad after every time I let our child hear that."
Draco glowers for a moment before he takes his wand and casts a spell towards his swollen belly and then says "There you go, silencing wards so our child won't hear a thing that goes on here." He still glowers while Harry just looks surprised and could slap himself silly for not thinking of that while Draco angrily asks "What excuse do you have now?"
Harry is leaning over Draco in a second and looks down like a starving man might look towards a three-course meal. "Please just tell me that you aren't tired because I should let you rest, it's really late and we could recast that spell any time and..." he stopped his rambling by interrupting himself "Oh fuck it." And Draco is very happy when Harry followed that with a heated kiss and does exactly what he just said!
The next day Draco kicks Harry out to get notes and his new homework for him as well as handing Draco's homework in while Draco himself catches up on some much-needed sleep.
When Ron and Hermione watch Harry slouch into Care of magical creatures they look worriedly towards him? "Was he still awake and grumpy when you came back?" Hermione asks worriedly. "You look like you didn't get any sleep at all. And where is Draco? Did you fight?"
Harry grins "At first we fought. But I think Felix Felicitas was still working because I certainly got lucky, multiple times."
Ron just groans "Too many details mate. I mean I'm happy for you but really, I don't need to hear details."
Harry just grins but then yawns again mumbling "I might need help to get him his homework and class notes from you Hermione. I don't have all his classes."
"And I doubt you'll be able to listen properly in those you do have as well. You're dead on your feet Harry!" Hermione sighs. "You really should have let him rest. Didn't you consider his needs at all? Or at least the wellbeing of your child?"
"I tried to consider his needs and that of our baby." Harry grins "But that was partly the reason for his hissy fit. I tried to hold back for different reasons, all including those presumed needs, too often and he thought I didn't want him anymore. And when I was out so long last night he apparently thought I was cheating on him or some such rubbish and that to be the reason I tried to resist him all the time now. I think I could reassure him with last nights activities that I certainly still think that he's the hottest guy I know and that I really do want him."
"Seriously," Ron whines "Can we talk about something else? Anything else, just not the love life of Malfoy! Especially nothing about nightly activities that include Malfoy! And I never want to even hear you taking that Felix potion again!"
Hermione and Harry laugh until Hagrid starts the lesson.
A few weeks pass in peace. Draco feels reassured considering that he has to start and keep Harry from molesting him every free minute because he is starting to tire easily and doesn't want to miss too many classes. Just to get any sleep at all while Harry is preoccupied with his lessons. The only arguments they have during that time is about a possible name for their baby. They quickly agree on a name in case it's a girl but not on a boy's name. Both want a very different one there because Harry wants to honour his father James and Draco wants to protect is godfather from the pain he'll surely feel when his son wants his boy to be named after his greatest school bully.
Thanks to the nightly talk they had, Draco isn't even overly worried when Harry shows him a note from Dumbledore that he expects him. Not even when Harry tells him that it might take the better part of the day and possibly night as well because they have to leave the school grounds but that it is absolutely safe.
Draco even graciously agrees that it might be good if Hermione and Ron stay the night in their room, even if Draco goes to bed simply because he's close enough to his due day that the baby could come anytime, it wouldn't even be premature since it would be by less then a week, though most people think it's a bit more. Harry even explains that since Dumbledore will leave with Harry, to just send Dobby to find him when the baby comes and Harry would be there as soon as possible.
Thanks to all that Draco is in a much better mood than he was the last time Ron and Hermione stayed with him. He even offers that they transfigure the couch into a bed and sleep there to be more comfortable once Draco goes to bed, which is rather early since he tires easily.
Later that night Hermione wakes up from Draco's call of Ron's name and then a loud groan from him. One look at the way Draco stumbles out of his bedroom and holds his swollen belly along with the pained expression are enough for her to figure out that either something is very wrong with the baby or it is coming now.
"Aquamenti!" she shouts aiming at Ron to ensure he wakes up quickly and stumbles over to support Draco before ordering "We have to get him to Pomfrey, help me!"
Ron and Hermione support Draco on both sides and run into Flitwick who is walking around to make sure no one is out after curfew. Flitwick conjures a stretcher for the blond student and lets it float with Draco to the hospital wing speeding up their process by a lot.
They just got to Pomfrey when the mediwitch asks "Where is Mister Potter?"
"With Dumbledore," Hermione replies worriedly. "I don't know where exactly but he asked us to stay with Draco in case something like this happens. We didn't think it really would though."
"Dobby." Draco calls out loudly and as soon as the elf is there he screams from the pain. "Get Harry's sorry ass here now!"
The elf disappears to find Harry standing by Dumbledore who doesn't look too good. Harry is just now feeding him water and Dobby sees an infery approach. Dumbledore, who wasn't thinking clearly lifted his wand towards Dobby but Harry forcefully takes it from him to protect the elf.
"Get us out of here," Harry says. Assuming that if Dobby can just pop in he can get out too. "Preferably to Pomfrey."
"Gladly. Little Master Draco is there wanting you." Dobby says taking one of their hands into one of his own each and pops back to Draco's bedside.
"What?" Harry squeaks worriedly and takes Draco's hand. Who was screaming from another contraction when Harry appeared with Dobby and Dumbledore.
"Dumbledore drank something that was poisoned I think." Harry tells Pomfrey holding Draco's hand "What's wrong with him. He'll be okay won't he?"
"The baby is coming." She looks at Professor Flitwick "Get Severus for Albus he knows more about poisons anyway and I'm rather busy here."
The Professor just sends his Patronus off and helps Albus into a bed before he walks outside certain that he'd only be in the way. He does wait in case Severus or Pomfrey need assistance. Though he very much hopes that he won't get involved in the birthing process at all. Not even be forced to stay in the room.
Ron mumbles that he'll wait outside and Hermione follows suit as well. Neither wanting to be in the room for this either but close by to hear if the baby is healthy and if it's a boy or a girl as soon as possible. Harry just holds Draco's hand and tries to talk calmly and encouragingly to his husband. None of the three people in the room even notice when Severus walks in and checks Albus. Or his whispering with him. Nor do they notice what Severus gives the old man or the moment he takes his last breath.
It takes only three hours for the baby to be born. During that time only Severus sits by Dumbledore's now dead body. Once Draco holds his newborn daughter and Harry moves a hand over her head gently Pomfrey asks. "Did you choose a name already?"
"Luckily it's a girl so yes we did chose one," Draco replies and looks at Harry.
"Eileen Lily Potter." Harry quietly says. He had agreed to take Eileen as the first one because he has no idea what his Grandmother was like and that way there would be less expectations to go with the name. Also, most people wouldn't even know that she is named after a relative and such think he just likes the name and not connect her to anyone. He also thought that despite the fact that Lily is his real mother, Eileen is also his Grandmother and according to Draco, she had tried to protect Severus from the worst of his abusive father and such Harry does like her for that alone.
Severus looks up surprised hearing his own mother's name but then sighs interjecting. "I hate to ruin the mood but I thought you'd want to know that I couldn't safe Albus." He had hoped to get around this moment. The dark Lord had figured out himself that the baby might be his child and such ordered Severus to wait with killing Dumbledore unless it doesn't endanger his position until after he can test who fathered that baby. That way there had been a chance that he'd never have to be the one to take his life "And you should do that test now because the dark Lord can calculate and this baby was born a little early either way."
Harry just nods and Severus quietly prepares the potion and ads a drop of blood he painlessly spells from Harry and the baby and says "Congratulations Potter. It is yours."
"Thanks," Harry replies quietly and then eyes Dumbledore's body sadly.
"Harry," Draco mumbles tiredly. "Can you take her? I'm tired."
"Me?" the usually brave Gryffindor asks, eying the baby terrified. "But what if I drop her or hold on too tight and squash her? She is so terribly small and fragile and, I have no idea how to hold a baby!"
Draco chuckles tiredly while Pomfrey mumbles irritability about silly schoolboys and then takes the infant from Draco and explains Harry how to hold her and what to look out for but says that little Eileen and Draco will stay with her for a few days and that Harry better comes to see them after his classes every day so she can teach him how to properly care for the infant as well since he'll have to help Draco with that!
With a tiny infant taking most of her parents time, the rest of the school year passes in a blur. Harry is glad that he had almost everything prepared for Draco to be safe together with Dumbledore before the old wizard died. The only thing Harry still has to do is explain it to Draco who so far has no idea. Harry had already gotten it organized while Draco had organized the wedding and Harry had refused to bother the heavily pregnant teen with that on top of everything else. But now, that the school year is coming to an end and Dumbledore is no longer there to protect them, he has to explain it.
One evening during their last week in school after Draco got Eileen to bed Harry finally says "We still need to talk about what happens when this year ends." Draco just looks questioningly so Harry sighs and goes on. "I have to go back to the Dursleys and then do something rather dangerous which includes killing Voldemort. I can't let you or Eileen be anywhere near me until Voldemort is gone. It's just too dangerous. I can't risk you, never mind her!"
"And where will we go?" Draco asks. "Knowing how overprotective you can get I'm sure you already have everything planned?"
Harry takes out an old notebook saying "This is a portkey, it will send you to the dragon reserve in Romania."
"A dragon reserve? And that is supposed to be safe?" Draco questions and wonders if Harry has lost his sanity at some point.
"Safe enough as a pit stop." Harry grins. "Neville has a portkey to go there too. Charlie Weasley who works there has one that will get you just outside of a safe house not far from there. Charlie was told about it by the secret keeper just like Neville was. The secret keeper will meet you there to tell you as well. Charlie will bring you anything you need and Neville and my secret keeper might come to help you and keep you informed too. However, I can't go there. I wasn't even told about it yet. I want to come and see you, but it would be too dangerous. And if I knew where you are, I'd be too tempted to see you at least on occasion. Especially if it takes longer than I hope, which I fear it might."
"Who is the secret keeper?" Draco asks.
Harry just shakes his head. "I won't say that name here. It's too dangerous that someone overhears it and hands him to Voldemort to be interrogated. But you can trust him, I'd never choose it lightly. Andromeda has also a portkey and she and your mother will join you to live there they both were already told about it by the secret keeper. The house has four apartments, that way you'll have your privacy but still have people to help with Eileen close by. I already prepared a room for our baby, or rather had it be prepared. I only chose a few things for it myself. But maybe you can spice it up with some spells by changing colours or such." Harry sighs looking sadly towards Draco adding. "But you have to promise me that you won't leave Eileen no matter what. Even if Voldemort tries to make you come out using me or God knows what. Don't let her lose both of us. I'll try what I can to make sure you'll both be safe and to come back to you so we can live happily ever after. But if anything goes wrong, stay with Eileen. I don't want her to grow up as alone as I was! Promise me that you'll be there for her. That you won't leave her to help me or anyone else!"
Draco has to fight tears, hearing that Harry clearly isn't sure if he'll make it out alive "But I can't do this without you. That was the whole point of this, that I can't do this alone."
"You won't be," Harry replies as calmly as he can. "Charlie lives close by and will come to you every day and help you. Neville will come as often as possible and your Aunt and Mother will most likely be there as well. Trust me, I'd rather be with you myself but I can't risk your safety. I just can't. But I'll do whatever it takes to keep both of you safe and come back to you. And you won't be alone. Slytherins might not have friends But I'm a Gryffindors and my friends will never leave you alone with my baby. They know what it was like for me because my parent's friends had trusted Dumbledore to keep me safe and stayed away. They will always check up on Eileen and help you wherever you need it!"
"At least promise that coming back has the highest priority because I rather see him win than lose you," Draco begs. "I really can't do this alone. I need you, Harry!"
"I promise you, I'll make sure you won't be alone." Harry sighs sadly. that is the best Harry can make himself promise "You know I don't have a choice. Believe me, I don't want to leave you alone for even a second, but I don't have a choice. Just please, be there for our child even if I can't anymore."
Draco wordlessly nods and Harry gently kisses him. Both cling to the other and for the first time since their daughter's birth, the gentle kiss turns into much more. Both feel like there is too little time left and fear that once this school year ends, they'll never see each other again.
For the last few days, Harry and Draco spend as much time with each other as they can and seeing how all tests are done for the year, they even skip most of their classes and on top of that let some of Harry's friends watch Eileen on occasion to have some time for each other. Though Harry also tries to cuddle his baby girl as often as he can.
On the day they have to separate for the time being Draco tries very hard to appear strong. To not show just how afraid he is that this is the last time he sees his beloved Harry. He's sure that he fails as miserably as Harry does. Who looks, despite a forced smile, like he's about to cry.
Draco makes sure to get one last gentle kiss before the portkey takes him and Eileen away and right before that he whispers, "I love you!" Just to make sure that he won't lose him for good without having told him that.
Authors Note: The Baby is there! But how will that year go? Will it help Harry that he took Dumbledores wand to protect Dobby? He is the one to disarm him now! And what about the magical soul bond they might have? Will they ever find out for sure? And how will they find out? Does Harry already know who he was in a former life? He had read that there were only two couples confirmed and that one doubted the feelings of the other like Draco clearly doubts his! And who were those wizards? And what with Severus and Harry's relationship? And who is the secret-keeper?
I do wonder I anyone can guess who Harry chose in this story! Was it a smart choice or will the secret keeper betray them? Did he choose more wisely than James and Lily Potter had?
As I wrote, just 7 chapters and a little bit as a bonus to look into the future some more. that means, the next one should answer at least most of those questions!
