CHAPTER 34- Dangers and Accidents
She shrugged her shoulders nervously. Her lips went cold as her body shook with agitation. She felt so silly for not noticing the signs before. It had been five bloody months! Five bloody months of being so oblivious. Maybe, it was the fact that she was so focused on everybody that she didn't recognize there was somebody's life she had been ignoring. Two of them actually. Hers and well-
What should I do?
She bowed her head as she stared right to the lingering silence. How could she have lost track of her cycle? She was so busy contemplating, getting so caught up with all of the situation, she forgot her menstrual cycle stopped for the past few months. And now, for after five and a couple of days, she had just realized. And she is inside a cold dark dungeon. Alone and seemingly living.
What should I tell him?
Her hand went up to her tummy, lifting the dirtied cloth to reveal the baby bump that she thought was just her weight improving. Nobody could blame her, when their Headmaster died, she kept on losing and losing her weight; can't sleep, and somehow, couldn't eat. She felt like a dead man walking. And those could turn women's cycle off balance couldn't they? Besides, her mother died before she reached the term of being a teenager, how could she know about things such as the days when women are highly fertile or Draco's hyper productive cells?
I just turned eighteen, and Draco just turned nineteen-
Her frail hand was absentmindedly caressing her swollen tummy, tracing circular motions upon the light skin. She had pictured herself surrounded with tons of children and having a beautiful man beside her, but it never crossed her mind that at a very young age, she would become a mother.
What would Daddy say? How would he react?
There were nervous tears that came falling freely from her tired eyes. Even if she was not one to lose hope, the situation they were all in were crippling her faith. Especially now, now that she is with child-
What's the matter with you Luna?
She felt so mad at herself for being so mad, almost as if she was blaming her own baby for having life. Her heart swelled with guilt. She realized she has to double her faith now, now that her little one is trying their best to stay alive, to stay strong despite the circumstance their parents were in. She needs to be stronger, to stay put even if it was the wrong time to carry such fragile gift
"I'm sorry little one" she whispered, caressing the bump as she felt the same butterflies- no, no it's not butterflies. It was the kick of the baby.
She paused as the sudden realization of it all. The new step she willingly took. She was in-awe with the fact that there really was an actual living creature inside her tummy. A human that she had created with Draco, a human half her and half him at the same time. They had made love and the most unexplainable magic.
"If you're listening, I hope you're not angry with your mum" there was. sheepish smile plastered upon her face. She couldn't believe it. She is carrying a child. A child that she shares her everything with.
She giggled deeply as the baby kicked again. She might've felt such negative ruckus when the fright kicked in, but as the baby responded to her, she knows that like Draco, the baby is stubborn enough that he or she wouldn't allow their mother to get in their way; Luna figured out that the baby actually wanted to live. Maybe, she did got her dream of being a mother. Well, not in the right age but it was still her dream and the baby is still her child.
"You're impatient little one, just like your father" she can't help but to blame Draco. Yes, they needed to wait but then, she reminded herself with the fact that the baby inside her is Draco's child after all.
As if Draco walked by, she fell inlove all over again. She already has the undeniable rush of protectiveness and love for the baby growing inside her. More so her heart thumped inside her chest with the knowledge that they could finally hear her. Her baby is already five months old, Luna drenched herself with the fact that her baby is probably dancing inside her, rejoicing for finally being acknowledged to.
"I'll see you soon, love. I promise, we will survive this."
"Send me that little tramp!" Bellatrix LeStrange's voice echoed around the whole ground floor. She kept on shouting things Draco doesn't have any idea, whatsoever, about. As always, he would keep his mouth shut, extremely tired of handling his aunt whenever she would have one of those days when she would throw a fit; much more than how she normally does. He sighed, spreading himself to his King-sized bed, trying to disappear and be one with the satin sheets. He would do everything to cover up any moans of the prisoners away from his guilt. It was a living nightmare whenever the death eaters decide to play their sadistic games; as if he was tied up in a chair, forced to watch people suffer right infront of him.
"What does she wants now?" he groaned, closing his eyes as his mother crept inside his room, making a small line of light to enter the not so dark chambers. Narcissa looked at her back before closing the door behind her. "Bellatrix calls for the new prisoner" she said gently, staring at her son's eyes as she awaited for a response.
Immediately, he was frozen onto his spot. He was caught off guard, unprepared with the situation he always distinctively knew would happen. Still, he cannot seem to face it. He was sure Luna behaved so well towards everybody; as behave as the standard of his good radar that is.
He wishes that he wasn't a coward but then, one cannot simply deny it's nature.
"Oh, I wish she knew-" Narcissa exclaimed, her voice worried and drifting. With the curiosity and the thick nerves inside his system, Draco stood upright to the edge of his bed. His ears ringing and heart thumping shallowly.
"-Bernice wouldn't allow anything to happen to her child. Especially when her own bestfriend would be the one who would lay their hands on her"
He remembered the portrait he had thought was owned by his grandfather. With the truth that was uncovered to him, he unfolded that it was actually owned by his Aunt. She was the one Luna kept on talking about. The mad girl Bernice Nott wanted to cure.
He got himself out of his bed. Two cold feet landing in such clumsy manner. His mother eyed him with questioning eyes, seemingly noticing his behavior. Yet, he only looked briskly at her. There was no point in trying to forget, trying to ignore now. Luna needs him. Even if he's a coward, he doesn't care. She was more important.
He needs to try his bloody hardest.
For her.
He ran from his chambers and skipped his steps on the staircase; briskly trying to work his numb feet without tripping. The aura of the Meeting Hall was thick with such intensity and he can feel her illuminating light. "-you little bitch! thought you can defeat the dark lord eh?" his aunt's cacophonous voice echoed through the high walls. It was evident in her tone that she was extremely furious.
He foughts back the urge to show the fright that were written inside his eyes. No matter how scary and brutal his Aunt can be, he just needs to make sure Luna's alright.
He stopped running once he reached the Meeting Hall. He entered with his hands clenched inside his pockets, casually trying to pretend that all was well.
His aunt turned her wide eyes to look at him. He gave her a small nod and his eyes drifted just a few seconds to Luna. He sealed his mouth shut, yet his insides were screaming in hopelessness. He tried to ignore the overwhelming sickening feeling in his stomach, and instead, concentrated with getting further to the scenario; on where he would get level to level with his Aunt. Soon, he was joined with a placid, emotionless Narcissa standing next to him.
"What seems to be the problem Bellatrix?" his mother said, annoyed with how her sister is once again, acting.
Draco turned his gaze towards Luna. Somehow, the girl was not looking back at him. He was fine with that but he can feel that she was avoiding him. And that was hard because he wanted to make sure she knows he was there.
Yet, he still waited, hoping that he was just over reacting. He could be a bit paranoid at times. Well, to be honest, it was especially with her. He was just like that ever since he had Luna. He had always been so possessive, clinging onto her like she was the only beacon of sanity he has left. Luna certainly didn't mind- well, maybe, today-
"This scoundrel-"Bellatrix shoved her sharp finger right to Luna's chest, sinking the tip on her collarbone deeply "-is disrespecting our lord!" his aunt looked at his mother as if a child being scolded by their mother; but then, his aunt wasn't innocent like how a child would be.
Luna formed her lips into a thin line, looking at Bellatrix as if she was not quite sure why the mad woman was shrieking at her.
"Why must you be that angry if you truly believe the dark side would win?" Luna asked simply. It was shocking to see her in that state. With Bellatrix's dark shadow, she looks so small. Luna Lovegood is indeed not fitted inside the darkness within the secret folds of Malfoy Manor.
He fought the urge to do something. His hands itched next to his hips, aching to pull her from his aunt. Bellatrix circled Luna like in a prey and predator chase. He continued to tilt his head, but at the top lids of his eyes he observes everything that were happening. He decided to cover the nerves erupting inside his system, he knows in his logical brain that it wasn't the answer to anything, so he did calm himself down. At his peripheral vision, Narcissa stood, observing her son as she could sense there was something going on upon the scene that was currently unfolding in front of her; well, more than she can even bargain for.
"What did you say?" Bellatrix grinned and then, a big sadistic laugh came from her mouth and the hatred was visible from her eyes. Draco was sure what Luna had been doing even if he wasn't looking; yes, and he cannot stomach the fact that something bad is gong to happen. He can imagine that she was still standing calm and looking all civil at Bellatrix. While the other was infuriated with her zen state. Somehow, that was Luna's 'thing'. Whenever she's getting intimidated by the enemies, at some point, the enemy becomes the one who gets frustrated and scared by her.
"I strongly believe that Harry can do it. The dark side will lose no matter what" He closes his eyes as he waited for the curses to flow easily from his aunt's mouth. He mentally prepared himself to block the torturous syllables from his ears. Yet, instead, there was a loud single slap that echoed throughout the whole room.
For a second, he felt relieved. She had suffered worse, surely Luna could overcome a single slap. Yet, his heart sunk when he heard an unexpected gasp next to him. He opened his eyes and saw his mother kneeling next to a fallen person. He stood frozen on his spot, trying to make sense of what was happening. Even if he knows too well it couldn't possibly his aunt, he still begged and wished. But he saw Bellatrix frigidly stille with her eyes wide as ever; as if they have seen something drastic.
As if his heart wasn't thumping fast, it erupted faster against his ribcage. He feels numb, from the pores of his skin into every lining nerves. Thug, thug. All he can hear was his own heart racing. He kneeled next to his mother, staring bewilderedly to Luna's pale, pale face.
"Wha-What happened?" He took Luna's hand to his, squeezing the limp hand as he fought panicked tears from falling. "What happened?" he asked louder, his voice hoarse and quite cracking. His mother did not respond. Instead, her hands were around Luna's tummy, one at the side, momentarily feeling, and the other ontop of Luna's arm.
No, she cannot be-.
He took her inside his arms hastily. "Draco-" He ignored his mother's protests. All his mind seem to register was to keep Luna safe. To save her, to-
He froze in spot. On the crotch of the dirty trousers she wore was a huge stain of crimson red. Below, upon the marble floor was a pool of collected droplets of blood.
"We'll have to take her to St. Mungo's" His mother said flatly. It was clear in her blue orbs that she was trying to control herself for the sake of her fidgety son.
"Why? What happened to her?" he asked, his own face paling.
No, please, she cannot be-
"There is a large amount of chance that she may- she may have a miscarriage" Narcissa continued on. There were evident tears on the edges of her eyelids. Try as Draco might, she could feel it. She felt the inner struggle her son's trying to hide. She was not sure of how to register the information, yet, she hopes in all her being nothing would happen to the poor girl inside her son's arms.
Draco gaped and squinted his eyes. His knees buckle yet he felt his feet went numb. It was as if his whole word came crashing down to him, throwing jinxes and curses repeatedly until he will bleed nothing anymore. He felt weary, restless. Tired. It was as if the world presented him light only to punish him, to make him crave for something he can never have.
He closed his eyes as he tries not to look at the pool of blood on the marbled floor. The realization of losing a child was too much to bear. He didn't even thought about being angry at Luna for not telling him. His mind only register one torturous thought, one torturous image of the child inside Luna's tummy; half him and half her. Life made him crave for something, baited him with something glorious, only to snatch such blessing away from him. Life was punishing him with the thought of letting his child die right infront of him. Inside the home he built himself with. Oh how tremendously cruel fate could be.
'Take my skeleton instead. Not the lives of such lovely souls. Not them, please'
"If anything happens to her-" His voice was a whisper of malice. Pride was nowhere in sight, he didn't care, he was too tired to hold back. "-I do so hope Bernice Lovegood would forgive you if anything happens to her grand-"
Damn it. He could kill her. He could destroy her. Bloody hell he doesn't know how far he could go if anything happens to Luna-
"-to my child" the blood inside his veins boil. Everything was pitch black. He couldn't think properly, the smell of copper passed by his nostrils and he was filled with the desire to end those who've hurt the girl inside his arms.
Fuck.
He went with his mother to the fireplace. Numb and threatening, he cannot trust himself to look at anybody. His mind was elsewhere, trying to stop the violent rage that was hot in him. Yet, still, he thought of possible scenarios and he was filled with negative results. No matter how hard he tries to stop lurking to the dark, the thought of having his child, the person he created with Luna, who would probably have blond hair and light eyes, who would probably smile and look at the world like their beautiful mother, die-
Please don't- he pleaded inwardly, trying to hold whatever is left to drain. He stared longingly to Luna's tummy, trying to reach out for their child who may or may not survive.
