May 1st, 2005
The transportation had sucked. However, there was no doubt in his mind that the weather had been even worse. Even now, as he sat in the Chancellor's office, drying himself, Konami Kodo could only watch as the rain turned the campus to mush.
To think his first day on Academy Island would be ruined by a storm like this...
Good grief. He really had chosen the worst possible time to show up.
"Haaaaaaaaa..."
"Is there a problem?"
The Chancellor's voice broke his thoughts.
"No, sir. Just regretting that I didn't pack my umbrella."
The Chancellor cast his gaze out the window as a thunderbolt flashed in the distance. "Ah, yes. Hurricane Tasha. Seems like she's still going hard. A shame. From what I saw on the forecast, she's supposed to let up around noon."
"Here's hoping. It's a little scary how it's been following me all week. If I didn't know any better, I'd think Poseidon himself had a grudge."
"I'm not in the position to speak for Poseidon, but the Admiral certainly does. From what I hear, you caused quite a bit of trouble while aboard his ship."
"..."
"He said something about you playing a game with his crew?"
"Oh, that." He rolled his eyes. "Yeah. I won a few cards."
"'Won a few cards?' Don't tell me... The Ante rule is forbidden!"
"Only for students," Konami said. "And I'm not admitted yet, right?"
The Chancellor frowned. "Loopholes like that won't save you at this academy. If you manage to pass your exam this noon, you'll officially be a new student. Your actions will reflect those of our school. You can't keep acting like this."
"You say that as if I've done something wrong. But fine. I'm done with that anyway."
The Chancellor furrowed his brow. "Truly?"
"I found something better to do."
"Young man, if you're planning on causing us trouble—"
"—I'm not. You have my word. Coming to this Duel Academy... It's been my dream for a very long time."
"Oh?" At that, the Chancellor smiled. "The same goes for most of our students. Many here studied their entire lives while waiting for their chance to enroll. If you keep your focus, I have no doubt that you can rise alongside them. That is, assuming you manage to keep a good grip on that 'problem' of yours."
"Understood. I'll do my best."
"That remains to be seen. With an attitude like yours...tell me, young man, why have you come to my school?"
"Because it's the best. And when I say that, I don't just mean in Duel Monsters. Your clubs and sports teams win tournies year round, and most of your students go pro. Even back on the mainland, almost everyone knows you're the very best of the best. You've reached the point were you're thought of as more of a training camp than a school."
"And with good reason." The Chancellor preened. "We take much pride in our students. How could we not, when our mission is to one day create the next King of Games?"
'King', huh? Konami thought. "Now that's a pretty bold claim. If it weren't for KaibaCorp's funding, I think most people would call you guys crazy."
"You're only half-right," the Chancellor replied. "It's true that we're funded by KaibaCorp, but most of our success is attributed to our students' talent and unstoppable will. Certainly, they're provided with excellent teachers and given wonderful facilities, but without their own incredible drive, we'd falter like everyone else."
"Is that so?"
"Starting today, you'll be joining the ranks of those students. Well, that is—"
"—assuming I manage to pass the entrance duel, right?"
The door to the office suddenly opened, and a young man in yellow peeked in.
"Excuse me, sir." He said with a frown. "I was told that you wanted to see me?"
"Ah, Bastion!" the Chancellor replied. "Yes, we've been waiting for you. Come in, come in! This is Konami Kodo, a prospective student."
"Future student." Konami corrected. "I just have to pass my exam."
He rose from his chair, extending a hand to the taller, stern-looking boy.
"Bastion, right? Here's hoping that we can get along after I do."
"Indeed," Bastion said, accepting the handshake.
Damn. He has a tight grip.
"Konami, this is Bastion Misawa, the freshman class representative. He scored top marks on his written exam, and is slated for Obelisk Dorm."
"Obelisk, huh? If that's the case, then you must have a good head on your shoulders."
"You honor me. I simply work hard. Anyone can do what I do."
"You 'do' yourself a disservice, Bastion." The Chancellor interposed, smiling. "It's rare to see a student so young apply themselves so diligently. If I had to say... Yes. It would have been when Zane Truesdale walked in."
Bastion frowned.
"With all due respect, is there a reason you've called me here? I don't mean to pry, but I see no use in my meeting a prospective student."
"Crowler didn't explain? You were summoned to act as Konami's dueling opponent."
The both of them blinked.
"Me?" Bastion asked. "I'm afraid I don't understand."
"Think of it as another challenge for you. We wish to see if you're worthy."
Of what, the man didn't say, but Konami was sure he could fathom a guess.
He exchanged another glance with Bastion, sizing the other boy up. Bastion was taller, a bit broader, too, but he thought he could win in a fight. But that was just it. They wouldn't be fighting. Not in the traditional sense. They'd be dueling, trading blows with their wits as opposed to their fists.
That was what Duel Academy taught. To employ strategy over violence.
And at Duel Academy, those who excelled at doing so were treated like Kings. It had reached the point where the three different dorms announced more than a difference in level. It revealed a difference in status as well, and how much you "cared" for the game.
Those who attended the Academy's prep school got placed into Obelisk Blue. The ones who performed well on the exams were allowed to join Ra Yellow. Finally, the good-for-nothings got thrown into Slifer Red, where they'd be looked down upon by their more respectable peers...
It was this ranking system that had initially brought Konami to Duel Academy, and now, he was about to find out how well he stacked up to the academy's best.
Given the color, Bastion's Ra Yellow. Is my exam also a test for him?
The Chancellor did state it was a challenge. Was Bastion trying to get into Obelisk Blue?
"Sounds like a good time to me."
"Then it's settled." The Chancellor grinned. "You'll duel each other at noon."
TAG FORCE ALTERNATIVE: LEARNING TO DUEL
LESSON ONE
VS BASTION
Just as the Chancellor's forecast predicted, the rain let up around noon.
Most of the campus was already dry by the time they left for the arena. If he hadn't arrived to the island this morning, he wouldn't have thought that it had stormed at all!
It was for that reason, as Konami faced his opponent, waiting to start, that he was only mildly surprised that every seat in the room was filled to the brim. Masses of red, yellow, and blue surrounded him on all sides, accompanied by the mindless chatter of a thousand voices speaking at once. The students must have heard of the duel and decided to come watch and see how things went. Or maybe they just wanted to take notes on Bastion, if he was as good as they said.
"My apologies," the boy himself murmured, as if he'd been thinking the same. "I didn't intend to make a show of this."
"It's fine." Konami replied. "It's not as if I won't have to get used to it. I do plan to go pro someday."
"A fine goal, but before all that, you'll have to find a way to beat me. Just o you're aware, I've no intention of holding back in this duel."
"I don't recall asking you to. It wouldn't be much of a duel if you did."
Bastion smiled. "I suppose not, yet I'll say it once more all the same. I won't hold back. And you shouldn't either, if you don't want to get sent back home."
"I'll keep that in mind, but really, you should keep your worries and concerns to yourself. After all, don't you have just as much at stake in this as I do?"
"Indeed. Joining Obelisk Blue would certainly bolster my school reputation, however, I see no merit in doing so after beating someone I just met. I have no idea of what your skill level is. To be frank, I'm at a disadvantage. If I'm not careful, I might even lose. Not that I think I will."
"Well now, someone's certainly confident. Are you that sure of your own strength?"
"I wouldn't be top of the class if I weren't."
"So much for 'anyone can do it.' But you know what they say, 'the nail that sticks out is the one that gets hammered down most.' You should be careful, or you'll find out that this hammer of mine swings pretty damn hard."
"Now who's the one giving unneeded concern?" Bastion said. "Shall we begin?"
Konami nodded, and they raised their Duel Disks, activating Duel Mode.
The Duel Disk was a KaibaCorp piece of equipment that turned a card into a 3D image. Its use in Battle City had led to a boom in Duel Monsters' popularity. The ones used at Duel Academy were far more advanced than the ones used back then. According to some, there were times when the holograms even acted like they were alive!
Bastion's Duel Disk was of standard Academy-issue, sleek to the touch. Since Konami hadn't finished enrolling, however, he used the one he'd brought from home.
As they whirred to life, the Duel Disks extended outward to form a sleek blade, upon which both players would find a board on which they could place their Duel Monsters cards. A numerical display of 4000 lit up, revealing both players' Life Points. With the set-up complete, both put their decks in their Duel Disks and drew opening hands.
"DUEL!"
Their voices roared out together, and Konami took the first move.
"It's my turn. I draw!" he said, drawing a sixth card from his deck.
It was Metamorphosis. He added it to his hand and checked his other five cards. He had three monsters: Goe Goe the Gallant Ninja, The Fool, and Lady Ninja Yae. He had two spells as well: Fuhma Shuriken and Enemy Controller.
"I'll summon Goe Goe in attack mode," he said, placing the card on his Duel Disk.
A flash of light emerged in front of him, and a hologram of the card rose. It was a blue-haired shinobi in a red shirt, wielding a long golden pipe.
Goe Goe the Gallant Ninja - (1500 ATK)
Bastion hummed. "Ninjas, then?"
"I'll set one card face-down." Konami said, setting Enemy Controller. "It's your move."
"Very well then. It's my turn. I draw!"
After adding a card to his hand, Bastion wasted no time to get going.
"I'll summon Beta the Magnet Warrior," he said, placing his own card face-up on the field.
A yellow soldier with beady black eyes appeared from the ground beneath him, wielding a pair of magnets as if they were its very own shield and sword.
Beta the Magnet Warrior - (1700 ATK)
"Now then, shall we test things out? Beta, attack Goe Goe!"
Konami grimaced. "Fine."
The two monsters charged at each other. Goe Goe attempted to whack Beta with his signature Japanese smoking pipe, but Beta easily sidestepped the attack and smashed Goe Goe in the face. The blow shattered Goe Goe to pieces, sending shards of light raining back toward Konami. His instincts told him to block the blow, despite knowing the shards weren't real.
"...Tch."
That fight had lost him a measly 200 Life Points. Barely a scratch, but he'd never been fond of giving his opponent first blood.
"I'll set one card and end my turn," Bastion said, looking as calm as ever.
"My move. Here I go!" Konami drew another card from his deck.
Masked Ninja Ebisu. A shame Goe Goe was no longer around. Without him, this new card was unable to unleash its ultimate skill. However, that didn't mean it lacked use.
"I summon Lady Ninja Yae!" He decided.
A green-haired kunoichi in a purple skinsuit appeared in a puff of smoke.
Lady Ninja Yae - (1100 ATK)
"And I'll be activating her effect! By discarding a WIND monster from my hand, I can send all spells and traps you control back to your hand."
"Very well," Bastion replied, removing his face-down from the field.
"Next," Konami continued. "I'll cast the spell Fuhma Shuriken, which increases my Lady Ninja's attack by 700 points."
He placed the card on his Duel Disk and watched the energy flow toward Yae, who focused it into her palm, summoning a shuriken nearly twice her size. (1800 ATK)
"Alright, Yae, avenge your comrade! Attack Beta the Magnet Warrior!"
"Yes!" she said, rearing back and flinging her new weapon forward.
The shuriken cleaved right through Beta's stomach, cutting the monster in two. As its top half began to slide off its legs, a mild explosion went off, consuming Beta and showering Bastion with its harmless, golden remains.
"Is that all?" Bastion asked. "I expected more from you, Duelist. It's been three turns, and you've only managed to scratch off a mere 100 points."
"And who are you to talk? You know, I'm still at 3800 myself."
"You're right. I suppose I should start fixing that. It's my turn now. I draw!"
Bastion quickly added his new card to his hand, then immediately went for another.
"I'll start things off by summoning Alpha the Magnet Warrior in attack mode!"
A silver soldier rose up from the earth, wielding a magnet-hilt sword.
Alpha the Magnet Warrior - (1400 ATK)
"Next, I'll lend him a hand with my Magnetic Field Spell Card."
"Magnetic Field?" Konami asked. "Wait, a Field Spell?"
"Yes, and as its name implies, it comes with quite the effect," Bastion said. "Once per turn, while I control a Level 4 or lower EARTH Rock-type monster, I can Special Summon a 'Magnet Warrior' monster straight from my Grave. Thanks to your previous attack, my Beta is now napping in there quite soundly. It's time I woke him back up, and reminded him of why he was called in the first place!"
Electricity flashed on Bastion's field as he activated the effect, and slowly, the destroyed shards of Beta reassembled in their original form.
"That makes two..." Bastion murmured.
Huh? Konami thought. Wait a second. Alpha and Beta? The Magnet Warrior monsters? 'That makes two?' Don't tell me he's using this duel to try and call that?
It was a monster that hadn't been seen in years, since the time of Yugi himself. And if the rumors of Egyptian Pharaohs were true, it was what helped him conquer the God Cards as well. If Bastion had gotten ahold of a copy, and was using it in his deck, then this duel was about to get a whole lot harder.
Should I try and help him summon it out?
"...if you have time to get lost in your thoughts, then you should prepare for a beating!" Bastion said.
"What?" Konami looked up to see Beta rushing toward Yae's direction. He declared an attack? But Yae's stronger! No, wait...that field spell!
"Yae, counter!" Konami commanded, and his monster moved into action.
Like before, a single swing was all it took for her to beat Beta. But this time, the monster's remains didn't simply shatter into gold glass.
"Magnetic Field's ability activates!" Bastion said. "Since your monster wasn't destroyed in this battle, it's sent back to your hand instead."
"Wait, what?!"
A burst of light erupted from Beta's armor, blinding Yae and sending her flying back into Konami's hand.
"At that moment, Fuhma Shuriken's effect activates!" Konami said. "Since it's no longer being equipped, it'll be forced to go to the Graveyard. And when that happens, you take an additional 700 points of damage!"
"...Tch! That's fine," Bastion said, watching as his Life Points dropped. "Because you're about to lose twice as much! Alpha, direct attack!"
The silver golem hummed to life and tightened its grip on its sword, which it then used to deliver a vertical slash across Konami's body.
"Ugh...!" he groaned, staggering back as if he'd actually felt the pain. He hadn't, but the stress was more than enough. He'd definitely felt that blow.
Bastion now had 3100. Konami had a mere 2500.
"I'll set one card and end my turn."
It's gotta be the same trap.
"My turn. I draw!" Konami said, drawing a card.
Ninjitsu Art of Duplication.
A trap. Just what he needed.
"I summon Yae in defense mode."
The kunoichi appeared in another puff of smoke, crouched in a protective stance.
"Then I'll set one card and end my turn."
"Going on the defensive, are we?" Bastion asked. "Turtling here won't help you. You took your time, and now, I've gathered all the cards that I need to win."
"If that's the case, then prove it," he said. "Stop posturing and draw your card."
Bastion blushed. "P-Posturing?! I'm trying to be resolute!" He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Now you've gone and ruined the mood for my combo... Well, fine. If it's action you want, then I've got plenty to spare. My turn. Draw!
First things first, I'll activate my Magnetic Field's effect once more." He declared. "With Alpha on my field, Beta is once more allowed to return to life!"
The gold soldier hummed as it reappeared on the field for the third time.
"Next," he began.
Is he going to do it?
"I summon Gamma the Magnet Warrior!"
Yes!
The third of the Magnet Warrior trio glistened as it rose from the earth, and the audience began to murmur as they laid eyes on its pink, metallic, form.
Gamma the Magnet Warrior - (1500 ATK)
"Alpha, Beta, and Gamma! I've gathered all three monsters on my field!" Bastion said. "A pity that you could only push me this far. I wanted to go further still."
"Push you? Stop being modest," Konami said. "I've barely done anything worthy of praise. Yet you're about to call him."
"Call him?" Bastion smiled. "I see. So you knew what I was planning. But no. I'm afraid your mistaken. There's no need. For I can already defeat you with the monsters that I have here! Battle Phase! Alpha the Magnet Warrior attacks Lady Ninja Yae!"
"And in that moment, the trap card I placed will trigger! Ninjitsu Art of Duplication!"
"So that's your plan? Stalling for time?"
"That's right," Konami said. "And with Ninjitsu Art of Duplication, my Lady Ninja Yae will split into three!"
As Alpha swung his blade toward her, Yae suddenly vanished, dispersing into three separate cards that laid face-down on the field.
"Three?" Bastion asked. "So you were running those low-level ninjas as well..."
"Sorry to burst your bubble," Konami said. "But this duel's not over quite yet."
Ninjitsu Art of Duplication was a continuous trap that remained on the field. It allowed him to tribute a "Ninja" and replace it with an equally Leveled sum. Since Lady Ninja Yae was Level 3, the summoned monsters' total Levels were 3 or less. They weren't strong enough to stand against Bastion's Magnet Warriors, but that wasn't why they were summoned.
Indeed, Konami was playing defense.
"Tch. Since Alpha's attack target vanished, we'll be forced to go into replay. Alpha, attack the card on the right!"
"It's Armed Ninja," Konami said. "Which means that once flipped, his special ability will destroy one spell on the field! The card I target is that face-down of yours!"
Bastion grimaced. "It's not a spell."
"I'll have to see that for myself, thanks."
"Fine," he flipped the set card face-up.
Sakuretsu Armor. Yikes.
"Since it wasn't a spell, it goes back face-down," Bastion said, frowning. "But don't forget my Alpha's attack. Your Armed Ninja's destroyed!"
Konami frowned as his blue ninja was cut in half by Alpha, who then returned to Bastion's field while its brothers awaited commands.
"Next, Beta, the card on the right!"
"Another Armed Ninja..." Konami said. "I'll destroy your Magnetic Field!"
Bastion frowned, but continued his attack.
"Ugaaaaaaaaaaah!" the monster screamed, shattering to pieces as Beta destroyed it.
"And now, to destroy your final monster!"
"I think I'll end things right there!" Konami said. "I'm activating my other face-down. I cast Enemy Controller!"
"Your first face-down? It wasn't a dud?!"
"Sure had you fooled, huh?" Konami asked. "Here's how it works. I get to target one monster on your side of the field, and then I can either take control of that monster, or change it into defense mode."
"I know how it works," Bastion said. "And I also know of its cost. You can't take control of any monster I have without tributing one of your own!"
"You're right, and since the controlled monster will just regain its senses during the End Phase, I think I'll pass. So I'll just have your Gamma crouch down for a while."
The pink golem's eyes turned red as the Enemy Controller activated, forcing it to take a knee and raise its arms up in cross formation.
"Good play, but saving that single monster won't do you much good. Since it's Level 1 and of the 'Ninja' archetype, there's only two monsters that it could be. Armed Ninja, or Crimson Ninja, neither of which are strong enough to destroy even one of my Magnet Warriors!"
"Don't be so sure..." Konami mused.
"Huh? What did you say? Do you have some plan? Some combo that I've possibly overlooked?"
"Who knows? If you want to find out, you'll have to continue this duel."
"You're bluffing," Bastion chuckled. "But fine. I suppose I'll humor you. You might have survived this Battle Phase, but let's see what you can do against this!"
He proceeded into his Main Phase 2, then grabbed a card from his hand.
"Yugi once told Kaiba that his grandfather's deck had no pathetic cards," Bastion said, "and he was right, for it contained some of the most powerful monsters in the Duel Monsters game! I've gathered all three pieces. Prepared all three of these ultimate cards. And now, the school shall bear witness as I call forth Valkyrion the Magna Warrior!"
A bolt of lightning fell from the ceiling, engulfing the three Magnet Warriors. Piece by piece, their bodies broke apart and rearranged into a singular form. A body that glistened with Alpha's steel, with a face from Beta's magnets, came into being, with Gamma as its wings, making the new monster whole.
"Rise my loyal soldier!" Bastion said, sporting a grin.
Valkyrion raised Alpha's fallen blade, and pointed it straight at Konami.
Valkyrion the Magna Warrior - (3500 ATK)
Upon witnessing the summoning of one of Yugi's most well-known and powerful monsters, the audience began to murmur once more. To think a mere freshman would have such a powerful card in their deck... If he wasn't turning their heads before, Bastion was certainly doing so now.
"Congratulations," Konami said. "Now...it's Final Turn!"
"What?"
Without answering, Konami quickly drew his next card from his deck.
"I'm flipping my face-down monster face-up! Let's go, Crimson Ninja!"
"So it was him?" Bastion asked. "Then that means my trap card will be..."
"As you say, when Crimson Ninja's flipped up, its ability activates, forcing the destruction of a single trap card on the field. And thanks to my Armed Ninja, I know that your face-down's Sakuretsu Armor! In other words, it's the perfect target for my Crimson Ninja to blast!"
"Yes!" the ninja agreed, hurling its blade at the face-down card. It stabbed the hologram clean through, sending it straight to the grave.
"No matter. By flipping that monster face-up, you've changed it into attack mode. And I'm sorry to inform you that there's no way your monster could ever hope to match mine!"
"Is that so?" Konami asked. "I've still got some cards in my hand. And the one I'm about to play is about to blow this whole duel wide open!"
"Is that a bluff?"
"See for yourself. I cast Metamorphosis! By tributing a monster on my field, I can Special Summon one with an equal Level from my Fusion Deck. I tribute my Level 1 Crimson Ninja, and summon...Thousand-Eyes Restrict!"
"Thousand Eyes?! Impossible! You had that card hidden up your sleeve?!"
Just barely. He'd actually won it off the ship's crew earlier that morning. The very last prize he took from the bunch before heading toward the academy. As he placed the card on his Duel Disk, his Crimson Ninja began to shake, grasping himself as tremors began to vibrate through his whole body.
He was transforming, evolving into a state very unlike his own.
Cell by cell, bubbling eyes began to sprout from his arms, sprouting and twisting and bleeding until they broke through his very flesh. With a final scream, his body burst, releasing the abomination within. Thousand Eyes. An indescribable beast foreign to all the known world. At least, it certainly seemed that way, with how the audience reacted. Konami had noticed groans and cringing faces as he summoned the monster.
He smirked at them.
If they think that's bad, just wait until they see its effect!
Thousand Eyes Restrict - (0 ATK)
"Thousand Eyes' ability activates!" Konami declared to the shell-shocked Bastion. "By absorbing a monster you have on your field, it'll take on their strength as its own! Thousand Eyes, absorb Bastion's Valkyrion the Magna Warrior!"
"N-No, wait!" Bastion said, but of course, the monster didn't.
"!"
An indescribable roar echoed throughout the arena, and Thousand Eyes unleashed several tendrils from the hole stationed in its center mass. Valkyrion attempted to resist its pull, but it lacked a protection effect. In no time at all, the tendrils had completely consumed it and pulled it inside.
Thousand Eyes Restrict - (3500 ATK)
"This is Game Over, Bastion."
"...Yes." he agreed. "I've lost."
"Direct Attack!"
Bastion's Life Points depleted. It was 3500 against 3100.
It was over. Konami had won.
Bastion fell to his knees.
"You played yourself. You should never put all of your eggs in just one basket. The proof was in your final turn. You should've left Valkyrion be."
"I suppose you're right. Even if you did summon Thousand Eyes, I'd have survived. I lost this duel. No, it's better to say that my greed got the better of me."
"Don't be stupid. You lost to me."
"That's not quite what I had meant."
"Explain it then."
"That's..."
The audience watched them over in silence. In a few short minutes, their freshman rep had summoned a legendary monster, only to be defeated by that same card before he could even do anything with it. Just how were they supposed to feel about this? Upset? A little betrayed?
And this Ra Yellow was the so-called "strongest freshman?"
Ha! What a joke!
"Well," Konami said, "I guess this means I'll be living the sweet life."
"What do you mean?" Bastion asked.
"You were the strongest freshman here, right? Since you lost to me, that means that title of yours is mine. Sorry pal, but looks like you'll be the Number 2 from now on."
"Actually, I'd be the Number 3."
"Huh?"
"I'm not the strongest freshman." Bastion revealed. "There's actually someone in our year at this school who's even better than me. Well, at least, that's my assumption. We haven't dueled quite yet."
"Wait, what?"
"During the entrance exam, there was a student. He showed up late and, as a result, was forced to duel a professor. He managed to win, humiliating Doctor Crowler at his own game. Until I beat him, there's no way on earth I could ever call myself the 'strongest.'"
"Wait, but you said you're the top of the class!"
"I am. He's a slacker."
A slacker? "What, like a Slifer Red?"
"The very same." Bastion replied.
Konami paused. A Slifer Red had managed to beat a professor? Well, then...
"What's his name?"
"Jaden. Jaden Yuki."
Jaden Yuki.
Konami smiled.
He knew who he'd need to meet next.
