A Demon Lord's Cry
Chapter Twenty: Darkness Descends

x . . . . x

Sesshoumaru was by her side in an instant as she collapsed – his arms cradling her close.

The last thing she heard was Sesshoumaru's growling and the sound of swords being unsheathed.

Sesshoumaru knew the moment Kagome realized that Isamu would have to be put down. He saw it in the cold resignation in her eyes and the stiffness in her form. He looked at Yasumoto from the corner of his eyes and watched as the older youkai realized that his Western Lady was not has helpless as she had seemed. Within heartbeats of her whispering, "For Takeshi" the older youkai registered his son was about to die. Hate and fear solidified in the emerald hues so much like Takeshi's and when the arrow was released, Sesshoumaru was already by her side. He did not watch as the boy was purified, nor did he look at Kagome as he caught her in his arms.

The grief in the Obsidian Clan Head's voice as he screamed his son's name was enough for Sesshoumaru to keep his eyes locked on him and him alone. Not even as guards appeared from the shadows of the many dark corners of the compound or even as swords were unsheathed did he remove his eyes from Yasumoto. A low growl filtered passed the taiyoukai's lips and his right hand moved onto his sword while his left remained curled around Kagome's tattered body.

Her breathing was harsh and form bloody and battered.

He knew she needed medical treatment.

Whereas both he and his father had left the compound with few wounds that could go unattended seeing as they were youkai – Kagome's could be fatal seeing as she was ningen. Yasumoto stumbled through the wall of guards, the abject horror still written on his features as he made his way to Sesshoumaru's side. Sesshoumaru growled as the male drew closer but the growl died abruptly when he realized that the obsidian inu's attention was not on he or Kagome but rather the remains of his son.

Ash was all that the attack had left behind.

Although Kagome's arrow wouldn't often leave behind nothing but ash, the size of the youkai and the range in which she had shot at purified Isamu from existence. Yasumoto dropped to his knees in front of the ash and began to pat it with trembling fingers. The gray grain slipped between his claws and for a moment he did nothing. A few seconds passed before he laughed and laughed until his laughs turned into dry sobs.

The fool then began to mutter and Sesshoumaru sneered, "He was supposed to be my new Takeshi – my new prodigy – my tool. My Takeshi. Obedient. Cruel. Unfailing. He failed… he failed, failed, failed." The sobbing stopped and laughter began again and Sesshoumaru knew that the obsidian clan head was gone and had been for possibly quite some time. He wanted to wait, not draw attention to the fact that they were still there, watch and see just how deep the madness went in Yasumoto but Kagome could not wait.

Her blood was slipping from her form at an alarming rate and the beads at his neck began to grow heavy with every shaky exhale she emitted. Standing to his full height he looked down at the bumbling male and without any inflection in his voice he informed the clan head, "The Western Lady requires attention – it is your duty as a member of the West to assist." Yasumoto continued to mutter and citrine hues narrowed as his voice dropped to sub-zero levels, "Yasumoto – you will assist and call off these men, or you will die by my claw this day."

The change in tone had the male turn to Sesshoumaru and his eyes cleared from their demented haze, "O-of course. Yes, yes – I know. Daiki!" the tallest of Yasumoto's son's made his way to his father's side and bowed at the waist. "Escort our Lord and his Lady to the healer. Guards, stand down and return to your posts."

The guards vanished as though they had never been there and Daiki turned to leave but Sesshoumaru's voice made him pause, "Takeshi will be brought as well. His wounds are no little matter and he must be healed before we return home."

An unreadable emotion moved through Yasumoto's while he uttered a light, "Daiki – take him as well and leave me in peace to grieve."

Daiki nodded to his father and walked over to the cage where Takeshi lay in a whimpering heap and effortlessly yet none too kindly dragged the male from his cage eliciting another loud yip that stirred Kagome even in her unconscious state. With a menacing snarl toward the older male Sesshoumaru stalked forward with Kagome hefted easily in his arms. Daiki turned to Sesshoumaru, his dark orbs blank as he regarded the younger youkai stoically. A dark brow arched and he watched the lack of emotion play across the taiyoukai's face.

In the world of youkai – age did not matter.

Power did.

And Sesshoumaru's power was unmatched just as his father before him.

Sesshoumaru's tone was biting when he informed the eldest of Yasumoto's brood, "Take care to cause less harm to one of my house or find yourself lacking hands, filth." Daiki's dark eyes were contemplative as time passed between them. Soon the youkai ever so carefully grasped his younger sibling in his arms and lifted. Sesshoumaru nodded his approval as Daiki turned and the two walked into the main house, injured cargo held within their arms.

.

Inuyasha had never seen Nishi no Kokoro – the city that his father had built and his brother had rebuilt. He knew the story of the Western Lands – how could he not? – it was a part of his heritage after all. He had never been welcome due to his somewhat strained relationship with his brother. Hell – he still didn't believe he was welcome but Kagome was here and wherever Kagome was, was pretty much home as far as the shard hunters were concerned. She was the 'Mother' of the group – providing them with food, warmth, a gentle hug, lending a listening ear, whatever it may have been that they needed. The moment that they broke through the large, intimidating tree's surrounding the city Inuyasha instinctively felt a connection to his homelands.

They may not have been his but rather his familial ties.

The hare turned to the shard group with a large smile on her foreign features and gestured that they follow her, "Oy! Hurry up now! We're almost there!"

Inuyasha snorted at the pale haired woman as she flounced up to the outer wall and greeted the guards there. White, triangular ears followed her as the guards looked as she gestured to his group. The guard's nodded their heads and Onora again gestured for them to follow. Miroku and Sango looked at one another – both a little hesitant. It was a well-known fact that Nishi no Kokoro was youkai village and ningen – especially houshi and tajiya – were not allowed.

Sango turned to Inuyasha and quietly inquired, "Is this okay?"

Inuyasha shrugged his shoulders and tucked his hands into his sleeves as he muttered, "Beats me."

Onora, whose ear's heard all, turned back to the tajiya and smiled brightly, "Aye it's alrigh'! Yer guests of Kagome-sama!"

Sango chanced a glance at Kikyo who looked unbothered at entering the village and she bitterly thought, 'Of course it doesn't bother her – she's already dead'.

One hand on hiraikotsu, Sango stood tall and followed the strange youkai into the world that Kagome had come to know and call her own. Miroku offered her a quick smile and she returned it knowing he was by her side. Inuyasha headed the group behind Onora with Kikyo at his side Kirara trailed behind them taking the rear in her smaller form, aware of their surroundings. Inuyasha glanced at the several guards dressed in their armor at the gates while he passed and ignored the way they offered him glares.

The village was busy and despite that the moment that they hit the market place, it seemed to grow still as the surrounding youkai caught Inuyasha's scent along with rest of the group's. The city was beautiful – none could dispute that – yet it didn't change the way that they felt threatened. Well, the ningen in the group did and how they wished Kagome was there. Their ears were not quite as keen as Inuyasha's and yet even they picked up some of the whispers.

"Is that the bastard son of the Inu no Taisho?"

"Fucking figures – more disgusting ningen. A monk and another miko! Is that a tajiya weapon?"

"We'll be driven to ruin because of this – Sesshoumaru-sama must have gone mad."

Inuyasha snorted and though Miroku expected his longtime friend to lose control and start yelling at the other youkai – he did not. Miroku chalked it up to Inuyasha not wanting to cause trouble Kagome might have to deal with later. He did not missed narrowed golden hues though or the way those triangular ears moved wildly in agitation.

It wasn't long before they reached another gate where more guards stood. They paused outside the inner walls and Onora once again turned to the guards, "They're guests o' Kagome-sama! Please let us through!"

The guard on the right glanced at the group and responded, "We were unaware of visitors."

"It was ah imprumptu trip! These ar' the shard hunters an' Kagome-sama's friends! Now ye let us through!" she glared at the guard and he remained unmoving. "I'll take responsibility for dem 'til Kagome-sama can confirm them as her guests."

The guard seemed to accept that and allowed the inner gate to open. Onora ushered them through into a large expanse of space and Kikyo found herself staring at the Western Citadel with begrudging admiration. Sango gasped and Miroku let out a whistle of appreciation. Inuyasha in the meantime could do little more than stare in awe.

Onora interrupted their ogling of the grounds with a light cough, "Well alrigh' I'll go an fetch Kagome-sama for yo - "

"That will not be necessary, Onora-chan." A voice called from to the side. Onora squealed and nearly shattered Inuyasha's ear drums as she bounced away toward the strange man that smelled of the fires of hell itself. The males scent tickled Inuyasha's nose and he fought not to sneeze. Golden hues met ever changing crimson and Inuyasha frowned.

Onora tossed herself into the man's arms and nuzzled his side, "Akihiro-sama! I missed yeeeee!" she squeaked happily, looking very much like a puppy greeting its master. The man exuded a darkness that set the group on edge as he pat the hare's head and nuzzled her cheek in return.

"Oh Onora~chan – I missed you as well." He purred as he gently nudged her away. "Now why don't you say goodbye to your new friends and get settled in, alright?"

Onora nodded and waved farewell, "Bye all – I'll see ye soon!" she again nuzzled Akihiro before flouncing from sight.

The male chuckled as he watched her go but the chuckle was dark and Inuyasha's hand twitched toward his sword. The ever-changing orbs turned to Inuyasha and the male gave the hanyou a large grin, "Ahh – so the infamous, bastard half-brother sets foot in the Western Citadel."

Amber hues flashed as a growl worked from his throat, "What the fuck is it to you?"

Akihiro's grin turned into an even larger fanged, smile and he purred out, "It means nothing – just stating a fact, little hanyou. Kagome-sama surely is lucky to have someone like you around. Unfortunately, she is not here at the moment."

Inuyasha's anger piqued and he growled, "Well where is she then?"

There was something malicious in his eyes when he murmured, "Being devoured by the Obsidian Inu."

Miroku knew his friend very well. Years after travelling with one another had provided him insight to the hanyou's mind. If he knew one thing it was that referencing Kagome using the word 'devoured' would no doubt set Inuyasha like one of the future contraptions Kagome brought – matches. He took a step forward quickly but was too late as the growl in the hanyou's chest worked into an angry snarl. There was a furious, animalistic glint in the honeyed hues as he observed the other male. His hand twitched on Tetsusaiga and the calm anger in his voice was more frightening then his usual yelling, "Explain yourself, asshole. Where the fuck is Kagome? I want details."

Akihiro lips curled into a smile that was more than malicious as he very easily informed the group, "The Obsidian Inu compound which resides in the Eastern territory of the Western Lands. She is fighting for her right to keep her darling little guard but the Obsidian are vicious and there are a great many ways that she may fair."

Before Inuyasha could respond there was a loud, angry squawk as Jaken appeared, Staff of Two Heads firmly in hand. His gleaming, bulbous eyes were glaring at Akihiro and the staff flicked outward, hitting the youkai in the back of his head. The man snarled and grimaced at the retainer but did nothing else as Jaken spoke, "You would do well to hold your tongue, hound! Kagome-sama will be victorious!"

Inuyasha and group looked surprised to see the little kappa so soundly defend Kagome but Inuyasha was more concerned with, "When will she back?"

"Noon – tomorrow." He informed him quickly and then looked to Akihiro, "Shoo you trouble-making, wretch!"

Akihiro grinned down darkly at Jaken and firmly uttered, "I see doom in your future, Jaken-sama." He turned to shard hunters and waved, "Fare thee well, friends of Kagome-sama!" Turning on his heal and humming a short tune, the hound walked away from view.

Jaken sighed almost exasperated, "Imbecile." Turning back to Inuyasha he inclined his head ever so slightly and Inuyasha shifted onto used to the attention. "Come – I will have rooms made up for your stay."

"What?" Inuyasha inquired coming from his stupor.

Jaken cast a wondering at the hanyou, "You are staying, are you not, Inuyasha-sama?"

Inuyasha glanced at his friends and back to Jaken, "Keh! I guess if we have to wait for Kagome and the fuck you addressing me so formally for?"

With a snort the Kappa shook his head, "You are allies of Kagome-sama." With a wrinkle of his beak like nose he continued, "Even if you are a distasteful hanyou."

Inuyasha growled as Jaken began to walk off. Lips pursed he gazed off East – less concerned with Sesshoumaru's retainer and more concerned with Kagome.

If you don't come back tomorrow, wench, I'm coming after you and so help anyone that may have harmed you in any way. Inuyasha silently vowed, crimson shimmering into his orbs as he watched the sun set in the distance.

.

Sesshoumaru stood over the healers as they worked diligently on the Western Lady and her guard. His citrine hues were glacial and did not miss any detail as they quickly worked, their stench of fear filling his nostrils. His fingers twitched with every cry the miko made as they cleaned her wounds and with every shaky exhale his strength seemed to seep from his body. The subjugation beads around his neck seemed to weigh heavier and heavier as each moment passed but he refused to be seated until both were out of danger.

Vaguely, the taiyoukai realized that Kagome had never been as injured as she was currently while in his care and he wondered if it was a side effect of the binding. Truly, he had not finished researching it completely. He knew that if she were to perish then he would as well – but was it also that if her injuries were grievous then he too would feel weak? Frowning, he looked over the miko and was oddly… proud of her. It was quickly an emotion he was coming accustomed to feeling while around the miko.

After several minutes of tedious work – the healers stopped and turned to the taiyoukai, their gazes curious. He overlooked his charges and nodded in their direction, their emerald hues becoming relieved. One of the healers parted her lips, her voice soft, frightened, "I-I will have s-some food sent in – in case t-they awake, Sesshoumaru-sama."

Sesshoumaru nodded his head, finding this acceptable and watched as the healers disappeared from the room. As the moment the door closed, Sesshoumaru took his seat beside his Western Lady and allowed himself a moment to determine what was going on. He ran clawed digits over his form, feeling aches and pains that were not truly there. Curiously, he paused and overlooked the miko's body, assuring himself that the aches and pains on his form were reflected on hers. He cursed silently because at this point he realized just how strong the bond was.

However.

It did not make sense.

The taiyoukai turned to his bandaged arm from where it had been burned by Ichiro several days prior and narrowed citrine hues.

He looked at the arm of Kagome and found that she was fine.

She had not complained.

How was it that he felt her wounds and yet not vice versa?

His eyes studied Kagome and softened and narrowed all at once.

His voice was low when he murmured, "What will I do with you, miko?"

The shoji screen door was knocked on and he made a quick sound of aggravation. The door opened and in came several covered plates of food. As quickly as they came, maids disappeared – leaving the taiyoukai once more alone with Kagome and Takeshi.

Sesshoumaru watched the two diligently, gazing at Takeshi every now and then to ensure that his healing was in fact coming into play. If there was one thing other than his power that Sesshoumaru would praise of his former Captain it was that he had unnatural healing capabilities. Soon Sesshoumaru was assured that wounds that could keep a normal youkai down for several days would only keep Takeshi incapacitated for a few more hours.

The taiyoukai was surprised further was Kagome's wounds also began to heal.

He was unable to determine if it was her miko heritage or something else entirely that caused her to heal quicker.

It was nightfall when the first stirrings of life filled the room.

Yasumoto had not dropped by the room – a fact that Sesshoumaru was grateful for. He did not want to deal with the unpredictable, grief stricken youkai at that time. Elfin ears twitched and he turned to look at Takeshi who was slowly but surely rousing to the world. Emerald hues opened and lean arms pushed the just as lean body into a sitting position. Takeshi's eyes fell on Sesshoumaru first as though confused as to why he was there and then around the room. The inu didn't seem to realize just where he was until he took a deep breath and the fear was stark in his eyes.

Sesshoumaru said nothing to alleviate his fear.

Takeshi looked down beside him – most likely scenting the miko's blood – and his gasp of anger and outrage was clear. He scrambled toward her, heedless of his healing wounds, and leaned over her – arms extended outward as though to clutch her to his naked chest. He stopped himself and the taiyoukai saw the effort it took his subject not to do what he wanted. After a moment he settled himself sitting at her side and turned to Sesshoumaru.

"Sesshoumaru-sama – what happened?" Takeshi queried softly, the fear still there.

Sesshoumaru was silent, his amber orbs cool, aloof – his voice even colder when he responded, "She won. Your life is hers to do with as she wishes. She was wounded terribly – I am assuming you passed out at one point, correct?" Takeshi nodded almost ashamed and Sesshoumaru continued, "She killed Isamu – your father has been struck with grief."

At that Takeshi gave Sesshoumaru a sharp look, his voice harsh, "Isamu is dead." He repeated more for his benefit rather than needing clarification. "We have to leave immediately then."

"We cannot move the miko – she has been injured – "

Takeshi cut Sesshoumaru off completely and a growl rose in the silver haired youkai's throat, "You don't know my father, Sesshoumaru. He will not let this go!"

Sesshoumaru made a sound of disdain as he waved off Takeshi's fears, "We have killed his clansmen before."

Takeshi was silent for several passing moments and finally his voice whipped across the room, "This was his son."

Contemplative, Sesshoumaru informed Takeshi, "Yasumoto is a loyal subject of the West – he will not attack. Even if he were, there is you and I and we can and will fend them off if necessary."

The obsidian inu turned to the miko currently sleeping away and murmured, "I hope so, Sesshoumaru-sama. I hope so."

.

It smelled of sunshine.

It smelled of flowers and spring.

Suddenly – it smelled of death.

Kagome's cerulean hues gazed around the empty space – white for miles around.

She had been here before so tentatively she called out, "Rin-chan?"

There was a giggle from behind and Kagome turned to see Rin staring up at her with a smile on features, her cinnamon hues excited, "Oh Kagome-sama! You won Takeshi-sama! But the nice lady says there is still so much to do! And we do not have much time this time."

Kagome breathed a sigh of relief in this dream realm and smile, "Rin-chan, I know there is but it's one less thing to worry about, ne?"

Rin nodded before her playful features turned somewhat serious, "Kagome-sama… you have done much for Sesshoumaru-sama. Rin is very, very grateful. Leaving behind Sesshoumaru-sama was the… hardest thing Rin has ever done. War is about to come to the West. You cannot fail." She murmured almost desperately. "Rin knows the possible futures of failure… and it breaks Rin's heart."

Kagome's throat constricted as she choked on her words and opened her arms as though to grab the little girl but Rin quickly evaded those welcoming arms, "Rin cannot, Kagome-sama. Rin came here with a mission this time, Kagome-sama. Rin has come to tell you to wake up soon." Rin gave a regretful sigh and murmured, "Something bad is about to happen. Do not sleep any longer!"

Kagome pursed her lips and frowned, "What is going to happen?"

Rin's eyes were closed, "Something very, very bad. Sesshoumaru-sama is going to need you again."

"But Rin- "

Rin's voice was stern and scared and her childish voice was shrill a screamed, "Wake-up Kagome-sama! Wake-up! Wake up right now!"

.

Kagome came to herself, her body aching, her throat sore.

She found her eyelids were heavy but she forced them to open.

A warm hand brushed her chilled skin and she subconsciously nuzzled her nose into the hand, breathing a sigh and welcoming the familiar scent.

Her voice was a sigh of relief when she murmured, "Sesshoumaru-sama…" After a moment her eyes fully opened as they met the blurry figure of Sesshoumaru. They soon focused and in the glow of the fire she had never been more relieved to see someone. The fire from the lamps turned his pale skin and hair orange and yellow. His eyes were chilled gold and brighter in the light of the fire – reminding her very much of a cat with his partially slit pupils. She closed her eyes briefly and opened them once, rolling them up to gaze at him. Her voice was cracked and dry – needing water but she forced herself to murmur, "I won."

Though there was no warmth in his voice, his eyes burned and he responded just as low, "I know."

She could not have received a better gift then the approval and pride in his eyes. With a watery smile she took a deep breath and was going sit up but another hand reached for her, tipped in white and black claws. A gasp caught her throat as she followed the line of the hand and arm to features of her guard. Ignoring her aches, ignoring her pains – Kagome pushed herself up and launched herself into his arms. Fear that had been missing in the exchange between herself and Sesshoumaru returned full force as looked over his body with eyes and hands.

Her voice was choked when she whispered, "You're fine." After coming across no visible wounds.

The obsidian clan member nodded his head, "I heal faster than most – remember?" referring to the wounds received by Sesshoumaru – the lashings from the beginning of her reign.

With a frown Kagome responded, "Again you are wounded on my watch."

Takeshi cupped her cheek and chuckled, "Should it not be the other way seeing as I am your guard?"

A sigh of relief and she nodded, "You're right but Takeshi – you are mine now." There was a resolve that hardened within her eyes and she stared at him through dark cerulean hues. "I will take care of you. Never again."

A voice wracked with grief sounded from the door – "You are correct, Western Bitch – Never. Again."

Kagome missed the exchange Sesshoumaru and Takeshi had over her head while she turned to face the intruder in their calm.

Gold met brilliant green and both inu-youkai stood and took a step forward, flanking the miko on each side, power singing through their veins.

There was no, 'I told you so' in Takeshi's eyes.

Both youkai reflected calm and an emptiness in their gazes that would have startled Kagome had she been watching.

Yasumoto stood there, his eyes dark with madness and a snarl that dripped saliva, "You have taken my son from me, miko – no more leave his day with you!" his gaze turned to Takeshi, "I will have my warrior! I will have my Takeshi!" His power swirled around him, an invisible wind, his obsidian hair floating about him as his eyes glowed a terrifying green. His voice was deeper, wilder, as he screamed, "I raised him! I trained him! He is my child! My assassin! His power was mine before it was yours! I will take him by force Western Inu if need be!" his power pulsed outward, ruffling the clothing of the three before him and pushing back their hair.

Yasumoto leapt forward in a blur of black and Kagome felt wind from beside her as white and silver streaked forward, their claws meeting in the air, sounding like swords ringing together. Two snarls filled the air and Kagome took a painful step forward hissing out, "Sesshoumaru!"

Golden hues slid her way as the two locked in a battle of strength alone, hands pressed to hands, each attempting to push the other back. There was no strain in Sesshoumaru's features but Kagome figured if he felt any then he would have never showed it. Those golden hues slipped to Takeshi and his voice chilled her to the core, "Go." A maid wandered by the open door and Kagome watched in horror as the maid screamed shrilly. Immediately she heard footsteps beginning to run down the corridor.

Kagome knew what was coming and whispered, "No."

His voice was rougher when glared in her direction, "Takeshi – take the miko and GO."

Guards began to flood the halls and Kagome felt hands go around her midsection as Takeshi apologized quickly before yanking her back and out the window. She was pulled around like a little rag doll and her vision was filled with Sesshoumaru pulling away from Yasumoto and quickly delivering a right hook to the face that had the other inu howling.

It was dark in the room and despite the light from fire – there were still shadows.

They loomed around the Western Lord like wraiths ready to descend and with fear filling her voice, knowing that she was getting further and further away with each step Takeshi took she screamed, "Back! Sesshoumaru – back, back, BACK! BACK!"

The subjugation beads around his neck glowed a bright silver with the more force that filled her voice and through the crowd of youkai Sesshoumaru was thrown back, away from the obsidian clan considering his back had been to her. It dragged him through the snow several hundred feet and with terror written all over her features she continued to scream until he was with arms-length.

Takeshi hearing her frantic calls slowed down and the miko grabbed Sesshoumaru's arm – the youkai fought the spell and grabbed her hand to steady himself as the spell began to wear off.

Abruptly he released her and turned in mid-air but the momentum of the spell and Takeshi's running made him roll several times before he righted himself completely and broke into a run beside them. They dodged the trees in the moonlight and even Kagome could hear the howl that filled the evening.

The hunt had begun.

She turned to Sesshoumaru whom looked angry and she knew why.

The taiyoukai was proud and had been prepared to face their adversaries. She was sure he had been confident that he would win but Kagome had not been so sure. By unwillingly taking him from the fight he had fled and Kagome knew – Sesshoumaru did not flee. The forest around them creaked and groaned as obsidian youkai cackled in the shadows, leaping from the darkness.

Kagome wondered in the arms of her guard, how do you run from shadows?

The answer was – you didn't.

You fled as long as you could until the darkness finally caught up.

Sesshoumaru's voice was chilled when he called, "Can we travel through the shadows?"

Takeshi's form was tight with what could have been fear when he answered, "I would not risk it. They are traveling through the darkness as well and they can fight there just as I can and there will be more."

The taiyoukai looked down at Kagome cradled in her guard's arms and he offered her a glare, "Then we move until we get out of the forest."

And they moved.

Fast.

But not fast enough.

For as the seconds ticked by the forest began to turn and twist around them.

At the edge of her senses Kagome could feel the obsidian fall back until they disappeared.

She was curious as to why and was going to inform Sesshoumaru and Takeshi but she never voiced the thought.

Instead a scream fell from her lips and horror filled her eyes.

.

Inuyasha paced.

He did not partake in dinner from the night prior or breakfast.

He waited, ears perked, like a dog for his master.

Yet, he wasn't waiting for his master.

He waited for Kagome.

He was in a room, Sango, Miroku, Kirara, and Kikyo with him. The tajiya and houshi gorged themselves with confections that were brought from kitchen as a snack before lunch was served. Inuyasha would glance over so often and see Kikyo whittling wood, likely for new arrows but mostly he kept his eyes on the sky, waiting for noon.

And when it came – he waited for her scent to tease his nose.

And when it passed – he felt his heart pound in his chest.

And when a commotion began and orders were being tossed here and there – he panicked and leapt through the window, his friends calling his name, as he ran toward where orders were being tossed left and right to at least two dozen youkai.

Inuyasha waited at the edge listening to the man with vibrant crimson hair and golden hued eyes giving the orders, his voice cold and demanding, "Sect seven and three you will head to the obsidian compound. Your sect leaders have been given orders on how to proceed. We assume that they have either been taken prisoner or someone may be injured. If they are injured, sect healers be ready. This is an extraction. If they are prisoner – remove any one who gets in the way. Bring back our lord and lady. Failure is not an option. Peace be with you should you fall."

Inuyasha had heard enough and immediately growled out, "What do you mean prisoner?"

The youkai in charge turned toward him and his nose did not wrinkle in distaste and his eyes did not show disgust. Instead the youkai arched a brow and merely stated, "You must be Inuyasha-san."

The hanyou ignored him and pressed on, "What's happened?"

Almost with a sigh he received his response, "Your half-brother and the Western Lady have not returned and per Sesshoumaru-sama's instruction we are to send two sects after them."

There was no thought in his mind other than, "I'm going."

After looking up and down at the hanyou, Ichiro responded, "We could use the help I suppose. And the forest has many tree's – I'm sure you can knock them down with Tetsusaiga if the obsidian do not let us through." After narrowing his eyes briefly in contemplation he nodded his head, "You will travel with the groups but you must heed their orders. If you do not then you may destroy the entire mission and get them hurt worse than they already might be."

Inuyasha nodded but snorted, "No promises."

He gazed East and silently added, You better be okay, wench. I'm coming for you.

The order then rang to move out and the two sects with an added hanyou were gone.

.

She was exhausted.

Her arms hurt.

Her legs hurt.

She was wounded.

She was running out power.

And she wanted to stop moving.

It was when the forest began to move around them that Kagome realized why the obsidian had fled. They were leaving the forest to take care of the strangers in their midst, completely confident that they would not survive. And the forest? It was horrifying; large, with roots thicker than Sesshoumaru's inu form and trees so tall and dense that they blocked out the sun and matter what they did, they would not stop coming from all directions.

Even if they ran, they would only run into a thicker area and there was no doubt that the obsidian inu were lounging within the shadow realm waiting for Takeshi to attempt to travel through.

Sesshoumaru and Takeshi had not stopped since her scream of warning. They fought relentlessly, their limbs shaking from the hours of combat, both fighting for their lives and hers. Her energy had not fully replenished from the fight at the compound and she nearing her end. She was still wounded, reopening wounds along her form as she fought, allowing blood to seep through her bandages. She wanted to drop right where she stood and sleep for a week and even then she didn't think that would help. She purified youki around the roots, she purified the roots themselves, but they did not stop coming.

In her exhaustion she knew that there was a major possibility of her not making it. Maybe Sesshoumaru and Takeshi but not her. And maybe not even them if they continued to protect her.

Her fear was suffocating.

Takeshi and Sesshoumaru smelled it amidst the blood of one other and dirt and sweat and grime that covered them.

And the fear? It stemmed from the fact within minutes she would be useless unable to even hold up her arms. Unable to stand. Unable to move.

She was so damn tired.

And when she thought she might collapse, there was a steadying hand on her elbow as his blade cut through the attacking forest that wanted to devour the unknown in its territory, and golden hues were concentrated on her just briefly. As black danced at the corner of her eyes his voice was cool silk along her flesh, "Stay awake, Kagome- " her name again on his lips. "- for just a little while longer. Find it in yourself to fight or you will die here."

Because even he was growing more and more weary as the time passed.

He was not as affected as the miko.

He could last longer but the forest seemed to grow more fierce every passing second.

Kagome caught herself, told herself that she would not die, fought against the aching limbs and blackness, and nodded her head and did as her lord bid, "Yes, Sesshoumaru-sama."

And so she fought for a little while longer.

Just a little while.

.

"FUCKING TREES. DAMMIT!"

Inuyasha was loud, he was volatile, and Kagome's blood was on the wind. So he hacked and he slashed and leapt right into that forest despite the protests of the sects behind him. Finally, they just dove right on in after him.

And he fought… relentlessly.

He pushed and pushed on through the attacking foliage until finally, he could hear them.

He was forever away but that was alright because he could hear her.

Her heart beat.

The blood in her veins.

The sweat dripping along her brow.

He heard it all and he was instantly relieved despite the sound of battle.

So he pushed.

He pushed himself and he pushed those behind him.

Sesshoumaru, Takeshi, and Kagome just did not have the numbers to fight what the sects and Inuyasha had.

But they were coming and they would have the numbers to get out of this damned forest.

So Inuyasha used Tetsusaiga and fought his way toward her.

Through the attacking forest that reeked of death.

Through the limbs that tried to tear him apart.

He pushed until finally – finally – he crashed through the branches with a roar.

"KAGOME!"

Her cerulean eyes turned toward him, dark with fear and a need for rest, and his heart ached but as she turned a thick branch made its way toward her and Inuyasha mentally screamed, "I distracted her! Savehersavehersaveher. Move FASTER."

And he was there, scooping her into his arms, cradling her to his chest and sect three and seven were behind him. He caught the gold glint of his brother's eyes and his approval was briefly shown before he began to bark orders, "You do not stop. Move." And though Sesshoumaru's voice was normal, it might have well as been a roar in Inuyasha's ears because once Kagome was in his arms he did not stop moving; did not stop fighting. Her relief was not stated but rather expressed wordlessly in the way she went boneless in his arms and how her scent though it reeked with fear – had a more underlying pleasant scent of comfort. Holding her close to his chest her murmured, "I got you, Kagome and I'm taking you home."

She didn't hear though… she was blissfully asleep, confident that with Inuyasha there – there was a chance of getting out alive.

Shortly, Sesshoumaru appeared beside Inuyasha, fighting at the lead of the group, and side by side the half-brothers pushed onward until the sunlight drifted in through the branches and the youki was no longer stifling. They did not stop though – instead they pushed under Sesshoumaru's command and continued on toward the Western Citadel – toward home.

And the anger in the Western Lord's aura was suffocating.

.

It had been several days since the Western Lord and Lady had returned home and Sesshoumaru was most displeased. He knew the miko needed rest, she had depleted herself several times over, but it was ridiculous that she needed as much as she did. It didn't help that his damnable half-brother was consistently yelling in his ear about how he let Kagome enter a dangerous situation. It eventually stopped when Sesshoumaru sent Inuyasha through several walls.

Takeshi was Kagome's shadow, literally, staying in her room until the miko woke.

Sesshoumaru's jaw clenched lightly.

He was oh so very displeased.

Mostly with the miko.

When he heard she was waking, he stopped everything he was doing and made his way toward her room.

If killing her wasn't frowned upon – he would have done just that when he opened her door and saw each and every one of her little… friends sitting around her. Very little truly bothered Sesshoumaru. He had cast off emotion long before Inuyasha had been created and brought unto the earth but what Sesshoumaru allowed to bother him – they were grave instances that caused for mass destruction.

So when the little miko turned her cerulean hues to him, Sesshoumaru allowed a little of the anger he was feeling seep into his voice as he hissed, "Leave." Inuyasha growled low in his throat and the guard soon followed suit as the intent rolled off Sesshoumaru in waves. The ningen in the room reached for their weapons and Sesshoumaru sent them a glare that had a shiver race down their spines. "I will not tell you again to leave this room. If you do not scatter immediately then you will be met with violence." And violence was promised in his voice.

"Listen you fuckin' bastard I ain't lea - "

The hanyou was interrupted by a hand on his arm and a gentle smile from the miko and her voice was soft, weak, and brittle and it almost rid Sesshoumaru of his intent. Almost. "It's alright, Inuyasha. I'll be okay."

"But Kago -"

She interrupted him again and her smile was a little weaker than the last, "It's okay, Inuyasha. I know what this is about."

With huff Inuyasha grabbed the two ningen and even the guard and made them all leave. He did not leave without tossing a glare to the taiyoukai promising pain and death should something happen to Kagome. Sesshoumaru ignored him and waited until the door closed and for good measure waited until he could no longer hear them and then he leapt. He moved so quickly that Kagome was actually awed rather than frightened when he appeared, her delicate throat within his claws. Reflexively, her hands went to grab his wrists and she remembered another time they were in this position, so much killing intent in the air.

And that was when she bound him.

"How dare you, bitch?" he growled, his voice a low his in her ear, his golden hues tinged pink in his rage.

Kagome seamed worn when she murmured, "I had to save you too."

"If you ever drag me from the midst of battle with this damned rosary against my command I will drag someone from you in a very similar manner."

And though she was still tired and she wanted to rest a little more, she still grew angry enough to raise her voice, "The hell you will! I will not allow you to threaten people I love! "

"And I will not allow you to treat me like an animal."

Kagome sputtered lightly, "Y-you y-ou prideful, arrogant – I saved your life because you're my friend!"

Sesshoumaru pushed Kagome away, flat on the mat, and his lips curled, "I am no such thing."

And then he walked away leaving Kagome bewildered and ready to rip him a new one.

Before he could make it out of the room a shoe landed in the center of his back and he went so still Kagome wondered if he was breathing. When he turned, there was no crimson in his eyes, just pure cold gold and Kagome shifted uncomfortably in blankets before murmuring, "I did it to save you, Sesshoumaru – not to treat you like an animal and I'm sorry but I couldn't leave you behind." The sorrow in her voice hit a chord so deep within him that he had to refrain from sighing and just like the anger was practically gone.

"It is weak, miko. Be it pride or arrogance – it is weakness that is shown when it occurs." He touched the beaded necklace under his clothing and continued, "This is weakness. I am bound."

"You don't have to threaten me, Sesshoumaru-sama." Kagome finally uttered after several moments of silence. "We can talk like normal people. Not everything has to be tooth and claw."

Several beats passed and Sesshoumaru made his way to his Western Lady's side and silently told himself, 'patience with her'. "I retract the threat but my thoughts on the matter still stand."

The miko reached out, her hand oddly frail looking, and quietly, "I'm sorry – I won't do it again." Sesshoumaru nodded his head and attempted to pull his hand from hers but her grip tightened as she bashfully inquired, "Are we – a-are we good? We were making such progress on – you know, us. I thought we were getting along better."

Looking into those curious yet guarded cerulean hues the anger Sesshoumaru felt melted away and he strongly yet gently muttered, "We are on good terms, miko."

She smiled brilliantly and her frail, little hand remained on his when she stated, "That's wonderful to hear. I was scared that all the progress had been destroyed. Just understand, or at least try, that I consider you a friend, Sesshoumaru." The honorific had been dropped to express her thoughts on the matter. "You're not just my business associate, so to speak. We did well at the compound. We saved Takeshi and he can stay and you went with me and you took care of us when we were out of commission. Much has happened."

His eyes flickered down to their linked hands before connecting with her eyes once more, "Much has been done."

"The boy – Isamu…" there was sorrow in her voice and Sesshoumaru immediately stopped her.

"Either you died or he died, miko. It was necessary." He informed her. Kagome's cerulean hues closed and her lips turned into a frown.

"But it weighs heavy on my heart."

Tentatively, Sesshoumaru brought his free hand forth and brushed her bangs from her forehead an action that had her open her eyes and though there were no tears, salt was beginning to fill the air signaling that soon she would cry, "And it will weigh. Death of one so young can be hard but he was youkai and he was a warrior and if we truly go to war, miko, more his age and more even younger in appearance will fight and we will meet them on the battlefield. He died a warrior and that is all that a youkai can ever truly want. You did well during your battle."

He pulled away and Kagome smiled. Her smile, though worn, was bright with her accomplishments, "You are right and now I have confidence that I can take care of myself if something happens – it was proven and that's because of you and your help. I wanted to thank you."

"There is no n - "

Kagome shook her head, "Just wait a moment before you go and rain on my parade." Sesshoumaru's brow furrowed at the phrase but she continued on. "It has only been a few months since I have been here and I feel so at home in my position now – after returning from the compound I know that this is my place. I did what needed to be done and so I just wanted to say thank you, Sesshoumaru-sama and I wanted to let you know that I will better than I have in the past. I will be the Lady of the West I need to be."

Her other hand joined her current hand in holding his clawed digits and they were oddly cool against his warm flesh. "That is not necessary. You have done well beyond what I thought - "

Again she interrupted him and though it was becoming tiresome he allowed it, "No, Sesshoumaru-sama. My heart was never truly in it. I will do better."

Instead of arguing with her he nodded his head and she breathed a tired sigh. Pulling his hand from hers he quietly murmured, "Sleep miko, you need your rest and we can discuss more later. I will have Himeno come to you shortly."

Kagome laid back down and nibbled her bottom lip, quietly murmuring, "And Inuyasha. Can you send him too?"

Sesshoumaru looked at the miko curiously and after a few moments inquired, "Is there a potential mating between the hanyou and yourself?"

With a squeak and crimson cheeked she cried out, "No! No – nothing of the sort! Inuyasha is my closest friend and I love him as such!"

The taiyoukai watched as her cheeks flamed an even more fierce red and he nodded his head, "I will have him come." He informed her lightly as he closed the screen behind him, his hands warm and tingling from where she had touched him and he had touched her.

.

Kagome was free to have dinner in the informal dining area that evening after resting for most of the day and had Miwa and Akio prepare a dinner for her friends now that she was fully able to celebrate them being with her. As lady of the house she decided that different foods and invited Sesshoumaru and Takeshi to dine with them. Sesshoumaru was fairly surprised when one of the maids entered his office giggling and dropped off one of Kagome's personal paper's containing her invitation in her somewhat messy scrawl and containing fairly cheeky remarks.

The front read:

Deliver to Sesshoumaru-Sama Inside his Office

Sesshoumaru snorted as he opened the folded piece of paper.

You are formally invited to the current Western Lady's informal dining party that starts promptly at dusk. Please join me in welcoming my friends into my new home!

There will be food and drink and I think we all need to relax after the debacle at the compound. I'll even have the cooks make you something delicious! Surely the war preparations can wait a few hours, yes? And I am certain Inuyasha will say something that warrants you hitting him!

Sincerely,

Kagome of the Western Lands
Shikon Miko

After reading the note, he surreptitiously brought the piece of paper to his nose and breathed the smell of the miko and he carefully folded the paper once before locking it in the first drawer of his desk. Silently, he decided he would go if only to see his half-brother make a fool of himself one way or another.

.

Kagome found her way to where Sango was staying and rapped on the wood of the screen quickly. There was a muffled, 'come in' and Kagome quickly ran into the room, a smile filled with secrets on her lips. The tajiya turned in to the miko wearing her pink and green kimono and her cheeks were tinted crimson in embarrassment.

"Oh Sango! I have come to visit you!" Kagome called in glee. Sango looked at the miko whom held towels in her hands. "And to take you to my bathing chambers – they are simply the best!"

"Kagome – " Sango's cheeks darkened even further as she replied, "I can't go to dinner this evening."

Kagome frowned and with a small pout and eyes full of concern, queried, "Why not?"

"I only have this to wear and it's not quite up to standard." She mumbled as she knotted her old kimono in her hands and Kagome's features dawned with understanding.

"Oh, Sango! I have tons of clothing and I am sure we can find something in there for you!" she informed her, hoping to set her at ease. Sango nodded gratefully as the miko grabbed her hand, "Come on and you can tell me everything that's happened!"

"I expect the same of you! I've seen so many different people here – some creatures that are even extinct in my family's records!"

Their feet padded quickly as the miko and tajiya made their way to the bathing chambers which were large, warm, and essentially a personal hot spring. Himeno was there already salting the bath with Kagome's favorite scents and other maids stood nearby grabbing her favorite lotions and getting more towels ready. The moment they saw Kagome they turned and bowed.

"Oh, Kagome! This place is beautiful! I bet you are happy that you have a warm bath every night!"

Kagome chuckled as she began to undress out of the kimono she was in and nodded her head, "I hated bathing in cold streams." She wrinkled her nose, "It's not something I miss, that's certain." As she undressed she turned to one of the maids, a less humanoid wolf youkai, "Chi – here are my clothes." As Sango took off her clothing Kagome grabbed hers as well and inspected the worn pink and green, "Please ensure that this gets repaired and cleaned. Tell the tailors her size and have several easy to change similarly styled clothes made for traveling. If they can – can you have them make them of youkai material so that they are harder to damage and dirty?"

The youkai made her way to Kagome and offered her a genuine smile, "Of course, Kagome-sama. Is there anything else?"

As Sango protested Kagome shook her head, "No that should do it for now! If you're done with your duties please feel free to go home and spend the evening with your cubs! I know that your littlest one wasn't feeling too well last we spoke!" Chi bowed and with a thank you disappeared from the chamber.

"Kagome – you didn't have to do that!"

Kagome looked over at her friend as she walked to the hot spring and shook her head, "Sango, I am in a position where I can now financially take care of my friends. There won't be any more scraping to find an inexpensive place to stay or pinching coins to pay for new clothes. I can take care of all that and you needed new clothing."

Sango followed her friend, embracing the warm water that lapped at her shins as higher as she walked further in, "And Sesshoumaru? He is alright with you 'funding' this mission?"

Kagome settled into the water with a contented sigh and tilted her head to the side, "Sesshoumaru doesn't often tell me no. He said I could have someone sent to you even though we need every abled body we can get."

Sango snorted, "She was interesting."

"She?" Kagome asked. "I don't remember Akihiro saying that it was a girl."

Sango shook her head as she looked at the perfectly lined bottles on the edge of the bath, "Oh – it was a girl. Her name is Onora. Odd creature but she instantly got on Inuyasha's nerves and they fought from the moment they saw one another. She was a hare."

Eyes wide Kagome inquired, "A hare? Like a youkai?"

Sango frowned, "No. Not a youkai, Miroku said there wasn't an ounce of youki in her. She was simply a hare."

"Was she nice?"

Sango nodded as she eyed a pink glass bottle with a glass butterfly on the top, "Oh yes – very. We found a shard several miles over because she heard someone discussing it."

"Oh that's crazy." Kagome responded as she dipped her head into the water.

Sango nodded as she followed suit and used the pink bottle for her hair, rubbing in the soothing cleanser. "I know. She's adorable and Kikyo hates her."

Nibbling her bottom lip she quietly asked, "How is that?"

"What?"

"Kikyo."

Sango looked at Kagome and honestly answered, "I think she hates it. Kagome, you and Inuyasha may not be lovers in any way but you are the first person to truly accept him and you are the closet thing he has had to family. This adjustment has been hard on him and he thinks of you constantly. I believe Kikyo is jealous as Inuyasha has paid her little mind since she joined. He feeds her and takes care of her. He talks to her but it's not like before. He doesn't look at her the same."

"What do you mean?"

Gazing at the miko, "He doesn't look at her like he would die for her."

A spark of hope entered Kagome's eyes, "As in he won't go to hell?"

"I think so. She hasn't tried either. Miroku and I have watched."

Kagome began to massage a different cleanser into her hair and softly murmured, "I hope so."

Sango looked at the miko and saw the worry on her features. No one wants their friend to die especially die by choice and decided to change the subject, "I saw a hellhound. They are extinct according to my records."

Kagome chuckled humorlessly, "Oh you met Akihiro. He's like Miroku on crack." Sango made a face of confusion, "Think Shippo on a sugar rush."

Understanding Sango asked, "Speaking of which, I heard about Shippo. I am sorry it has happened."

"No. It's a good thing. He has power according to Sesshoumaru just raw and untamed and the kitsune can teach him and they will take care of him. I will get reports from the teachers there and it's for the best. For now. In a month or so I can see him."

"Still…"

Kagome cleansed herself of dirt and grime finally all soap suds before standing. One of the maids rushed to her side and offered her a towel, "It's for the best and I know it. It hurts not having him by but he's safe. Now come with me so we can get you dressed and pampered!"

.

Sango left with her new borrowed clothes, several maids trailing after her, holding jewelry and hair decorations, giggling and excited about the prospect of getting someone new dressed, especially one as lovely as Sango.

When she left, Kagome in her plain white yukata called out, "Takeshi?" There was no response and letting her power pulse she firmly called again, "Takeshi." A moment later the shadows rippled around her and her guard was in front of her. She took several steps toward him and his brows crinkled in curiosity.

"You called? And should you be up?" he inquired.

Kagome's brow arched, "You have been extremely scarce since I awoke."

Takeshi shook his head, "Not scarce. You just couldn't see me. You had quite a few protectors over the past few hours. The hanyou - " at her look he quickly corrected himself. " – Inuyasha, doesn't seem to fond of my presence."

She snorted, very unladylike, and responded, "That doesn't surprise me but I called you for a reason. Sango has been here three days and she has not seen Kohaku. She didn't bring him up during the bath. I want to know why. Do you know where he is?"

Takeshi shook his head, "I do not know. I can find out if you would like."

"Please. As soon as possible." Just as he was about to disappear, Kagome reached out for him and he paused. "Takeshi – are you alright? I haven't had a chance to ask you."

Takeshi's hand overlapped hers and he gave her that half smile she had grown to know, "Kagome-sama… I am fine."

"You are mine." She murmured, "Though I don't want to own you."

There was a darkness in his gaze that Kagome didn't quite understand as he responded lowly, "It is best to be owned by someone like you then by a clan like them."

"You are my friend, Takeshi – not my play thing. If you don't want to do something then tell me or if something upsets you then let me know. You are your own person – not my person."

Takeshi fully turned and took more liberties with her form in that moment then he had ever quite before by gently cupping her cheeks within his clawed hands, calloused by years of work with weapons, "If is information you need, I will get it. If someone must die, I will kill them. If you need to talk, I will listen. I am your guard and would die for you, Lady of the West. More than that – my freedom is yours and I will do as you bid no matter how unsavory or silly it may seem. All you need to do is command, Kagome-sama, and the world is yours."

Despite the fact that this was Takeshi and he was her confidant in this place and her guide in the world that was the upper class, Kagome's cheeks reddened under his thumbs and then he was gone, swallowed by the darkness that was his realm.

And her heart was quick within her chest.

When he appeared again, Kohaku was with him, dirty, and worn.

Kagome was thankful she was dressed but the maids that had been doing her hair were instantly startled by the males' sudden appearance.

"Kohaku!" Kagome squeaked taking in his dirty clothing and sweat soaked skin. "What have you been doing?"

His grin was tired and the shadows in his eyes were still there but they seemed a little lighter, "I have been with the guards."

"And sleeping? Himeno-san said you don't sleep in your room and she hasn't seen you since I left!" Kagome queried as she stood and walked toward him, the cream, white and lavender colored kimono swishing around her feet.

Kohaku was sheepish when he responded crimson cheeked, "The guards quarters. I have not left there. I trained with them and just decided to stay. They had an extra bed and they told tales by the fire that were hard to resist."

Kagome rolled her eyes as if to say, 'boys', and then gave him a look of concern, "Kohaku – I called you for a reason."

The young man immediately stood straight, his eyes concentrated on her, "Is there something you require of me?"

Her eyes were soft as touched his upper arm gently, "No, but… your sister is here. I didn't know if you wanted to see her yet. I know this hard – after everything that has happened." There was an unnatural stillness in the boy and both Kagome and Takeshi watched as he struggled with what to do. "It would hurt to do it but I can keep a secret if you want stay hidden for a little while longer. I know it's been… a while… and it can't have been easy being with Naraku."

Kohaku looked at her, the freckles on his nose were dark against his skin as he went somewhat pale. Slowly he answered, his voice somewhat hoarse, "This is unexpected, Kagome… what would I say? I have done so much wrong – how can I even look at her and ask her to call me family?"

"I have a little brother, not much younger than you… and I can honestly say that if it was him in this situation it wouldn't be very difficult to call him family at all." Her smile held a genuine truth to it and Kohaku took a shallow and shaky breath.

"Can you take me to her then, Kagome? I don't know if I can go on my own." His knees shook as Kagome nodded her head and turned to dismiss the maids.

She looked over at Takeshi and smiled, "Takeshi – you're free to get ready for the evening." He bowed his head lightly before disappearing into the blackness and Kagome hooked her hand into the crook of Kohaku's arm. "Onward shall we?"

The boy nodded and slowly they made their way to the wing where the shard hunters were staying. She understood his fear. He had attacked them on several occasions, unwillingly, and each time he felt he reminded Sango of the death that stained his hands. Would she hate him? Would she try and kill him now that he was free of Naraku's control? Would she be angry?

So much could happen.

When they reached her room, Kagome gestured for him to stay there as she knocked. There was a soft mew from the other side of the door and Kagome saw Kirara's out line in the shoji screen, "Sango? It's Kagome!" She heard Sango call, 'come in' and Kirara darted out to where Kohaku stood hidden behind the door to the side. Sango turned to Kagome, looking lovely in her borrowed kimono of dark blue and deep magenta, her hair in extravagant ringlets, and make-up lightly done. "Oh you look gorgeous, Sango!"

Sango blushed deeply and informed her, "I have never worn something so lovely, Kagome."

"It looks absolutely stunning!" Kagome tittered happily but there was a sparkle in her eyes that said her happiness was over something else completely. "I have someone I want you to meet, Sango. He's extremely excited."

"Meet?" the tajiya offered Kagome a look of confusion. "In my room? It is entirely inappropriate to meet a man in my room."

Her eyes twinkled mischievously and her smile widened, "This man is a little different."

Sango sounded exasperated when she stated, "A ningen, youkai – it doesn't matter they are still me - " The screen opened completely and Sango went quiet, her mouth wide as Kohaku stood there, slightly dirty, Kirara in his arms purring loudly. His cheeks were crimson but his eyes were worried.

His voice cracked as he greeted her, "Hello, sist - "

He didn't finish his greeting because soon he had an armful of a sobbing Sango and Kagome quietly excused herself as the two held one another and wept.

.

There was a moment's lull where everyone was getting ready and Kagome had her small party prepared and when there was a lull she found herself going to Sesshoumaru's office. She walked quetly through the halls, her kimono whispering against her skin. She was excited, this would be her first small event that she had ever prepared on her own and she wanted to see if Sesshoumaru would join them that evening. Excitement continued to roll off her in waves and she moved quicker to the place where Sesshoumaru always was now and days. When she reached the large doors, she knocked lightly and practically jumped when a voice coolly spoke behind her, "Are you looking for someone, miko?"

Kagome turned quickly surprised to see Sesshoumaru behind her several small scrolls in his arm and offered a bright yet nervous smile, "I was looking for you!"

A brow cocked curiously and Sesshoumaru pushed on the heavy door in front of her and gestured her to enter. She bowed her head in thanks and ran inside, giddy, and found herself a spot to sit. She chose the corner where large decorative pillows sat. She had them moved in awhile ago as she she often studied in the office or wrote little notes to her friends or even read. Sesshoumaru had initially fought against the intrusion to his sanctuary but as Kagome told Sango - he did not often deny her requests. She didn't know why but Sesshoumaru found it easier to deal with a happy Kagome than an angry one. He settled in behind his desk and gestured her to speak with a quick nod of his head, his attention moving to the scrolls he had brought with him.

"Sesshoumaru-sama, I was wondering if you would be joining us this evening. I had a maid bring by an invitation."

It was quiet for a few moments other than the soft sound of his claws moving over the paper, careful not to rip it. She waited patiently, patiently including a little bounce and wiggle here and there until he finally spoke, "I have decide to join this evenings festivities. You are aware that there are pressing matters to tend to, correct? You must be up to date with the latest news."

Nibbling her bottom lip she quietly queried, "Is there a lot?"

Turning to face her, his citrine eyes were bare of emotion, "Not much."

"Your carefully blank face makes me feel like that 'not much' translates to 'quite a bit'." she huffed.

Sesshoumaru offered her no indication that he heard her as he continued, "It is mostly things of the Obsidian."

Kagome nodded her head and looked down at her lap, "They betrayed you."

"They betrayed us." he corrected, putting down the scroll in his hand and turning to completely face her. "And the West." She had not looked up and still faced her hands. "Miko - what ails you?"

"It's my fault, isn't it? Had I not needed a guard you would have never given me Takeshi."

Sesshoumaru paused and carefully considered his words before answering, "It was an accumulation of issues. With how far mad Yasumoto is I have little doubt he would have eventually forcefully come for your guard."

She looked up and the guilt was stark in her eyes, "I forced his hand, S - "

"You did nothing of the sort. We had an agreement older than you that stated Takeshi could have freedom if a champion arose and you were that champion." As he attempted to set her ease, Kagome was meanwhile struck at how often he was trying to alleviate her fears and concerns.

I am your Lord and you will come to me when you have these...insecurities.

Almost unwillingly she stood and made her way to his side.

We are not mates but we are partners and partners depend on one another.

There was a question in his eyes but Kagome paid it no mind as she enveloped him in a hug that had his entire body stiffen.

I am not a warm being or a very verbal one but I am trying.

Because at that moment Kagome realized she had come to rely on Sesshoumaru in ways that she felt she could only rely on Inuyasha.

Be patient, Kagome, be patient.

Tentatively, she felt the light pat of his hand against her arm, still unaccustomed to touching her and Kagome grinned because a few years ago those hands would have shredded her to pieces and now their comfort was one she welcomed.

.

Kohaku's appearance at the dinner table startled Miroku to excitement that was brought on by the fact it was brother of the woman he wanted to marry. Inuyasha starred in awe before turning to Sesshoumaru with questioning golden hues which promptly grew angry as his half brother snubbed him. And Kagome watched the comings and happenings with a content heart... that was until Kikyo came into the picture.

Kagome had sent her an invitation but she did not think the other miko would actually join, after all, Kikyo was dead and did not require the same sustenance as the rest of them.

But she was there and was guided to a seat beside Inuyasha with Sango on her other side.

Sesshoumaru's citrine hues observed the miko, her death scent clinging to her fake flesh.

Her gray hues shimmered with unease just for the barest moment before she turned the full force of her glare onto the taiyoukai.

"What is it, youkai?" she queried, her voice not betraying her unease.

Sesshoumaru made no indication that heard her, instead he spoke with an ease that was startling, "We have not formally met."

Kikyo's brow arched deeply into her bangs, "I am Kikyo, original Miko of the Shikon no Tama."

Sesshoumaru nodded his head and observed the features that looked so similar yet so different from the features of the miko at his side, "And you hold the other portion of my Western Lady's soul, correct?"

Kikyo's eyes darkened and she bit out coldly, "My soul. Not hers."

"But you are dead so it is hers, is it not?" he dd not allow Kikyo to speak as he pressed on. "I would like nothing more than to kill you where you stand, for the miko at my side is weaker while you still live. One toe out of line, former Shikon Miko, and I will relish in your death."

"Do not assume that I will allow you to threaten me, youkai. I will not allow for any youkai to talk down to me in such a way!" her voice, normally calm, was filled with a quiet and cold rage. Sesshoumaru sneered and Kagome watched the exchange with a soft horror. Sure she and Kikyo bore no love for another but... Inuyasha needed Kikyo, didn't he? Yet when she turned to Inuyasha he was just as stunned as she. If Sesshoumaru cared at all for venom dripping from Kikyo's lips then he did not make it seem that way but Kagome knew Sesshoumaru had definitely killed for less.

And so for Kikyo - mostly for Inuyasha - she placed a palm on Sesshoumaru's bicep, feeling the muscles bunch under his skin in agitation.

"Kikyo... you are a guest in this house and whether it be the house of a youkai or a house of ningen, disrespect is never tolerated." Kagome spoke quickly, firmly, with eyes that reflected nothing. "If you do not know how to respect this house then remove yourself from it." Kikyo's eyes flickered to Inuyasha, expecting - expecting what Kagome didn't know but before Inuyasha could voice anything, Kagome's ire was on Kikyo in an instant, "Do not look to Inuyasha for help - you have brought this on yourself and he hold's no power here!"

Inuyasha turned to his friend, "K-Kagome -"

"No, Inuyasha. Her disrespect will no longer be tolerated. I let her do as she pleased, say what she pleased, during our hunt for the shards because I thought she meant something to you, however, I will not tolerate disrespect towards my Lord in our home and Kikyo can just leave if that is how she will act."

As Kagome breathed heavily, her anger palpable, Kikyo narrowed gray orbs at her, "You grow bold, my reincarnation, now that you have youkai at your beck and call."

Kagome shook her head, "No Kikyo, I am bold now that I don't fear you."

There was a light, feminine chuckle of mirth and gray orbs shimmered with laughter. Kagome was surprised the woman so wrought with anger could make such a light sound, "Oh, my little copy, you should fear." The dead miko turned to Inuyasha her mirth still there, "I am ashamed of you. Will you allow them to talk to me in such a manner? You promised to protect me, Inuyasha."

Inuyasha looked torn and Kagome's heart hurt that she had put that look on his face by riling Kikyo even more than she should have. When he spoke there was a gentleness in his voice that did not surprise her, "Kikyo... you can't expect me to defend you when Kagome's right. We don't live here and you are bein' dis - "

"Silence, Inuyasha - I know where your loyalty lies." standing, Kikyo turned, and walked from the room and with an apologetic look to Kagome, Inuyasha ran after her.

Sesshoumaru watched his half brother leave and turned to Kagome at his side, "You should let me kill her."

Shaking her Kagome could only murmur, "He loves her, Sesshoumaru-sama - you just can't."

Takeshi chose that moment to enter the chamber, his nose wrinkled in distaste, "I scent the dead one was here."

Kagome smiled lightly at her guard, "You just missed her."

"Good - she makes me sneeze."

At his look of disgust, Kagome laughed lightly.

.

When night fell that evening Kagome found Inuyasha on top of the roof outside.

Quietly, she cleared her throat and Inuyasha leaned over the edge of the building, his hand out for hers. She reached and he pulled her up and brought her into the circle of his arms so that she could press her back to his chest and he could bury his nose in her obsidian tresses. All was quiet as the half-moon rose above them, the stars twinkling in the bright moonlight and Kagome spoke so, so softly that Inuyasha turned his ears so that he could hear her completely, "I'm sorry for making trouble."

There was a sigh and a light 'keh', "Honestly, wench, I don' think ya should apologize - not this time." Her brows creased in confusion as she looked at her friend, "I didn't realize just how bad things were between the two of you."

Kagome scoffed and rolled her eyes, "Well, yeah. She's been trying to dragging you to hell since forever. Of course we don't get along. What friend wants their friend to go to hell willingly?"

Inuyasha scowled, "Stupid. I'm not going to hell."

Eyes wide Kagome queried, "Since when?"

Shrugging his shoulders, "Since forever." he responded cheekily, quoting her.

Flushing in anger and excitement Kagome squealed, "Inuyasha! That's wonderful news! I've been so scared that Miroku and Sango would come and say you descended into hell one day!"

Crimson cheeked he grumbled back, "This don't mean I don't care for her, because I do I just know where I belong now."

Eyes soft Kagome responded, "I know you care for her and I will try and not provoke her."

"Good 'cause -" he paused and took a deep breath, eyes flashing with pain. " - 'cause I can't pick sides."

Leaning her forehead against his she whispered solemnly, "And I would never ask you to."

Inuyasha was going to speak but he stiffened abruptly as the shadows began to stretch and move around them. Kagome paid them little mind as Takeshi appeared, kneeled beside them, "Kagome-sama, I am sorry to interrupt- " though he really wasn't. "- but Mizuki-sama has awoken and asked for your presence."

"Mizuki-sama is awake?" she asked excitedly as she jumped from Inuyasha's arms.

"Who's that?" Inuyasha asked.

Kagome turned to him right as she grasped Takeshi's arm, "Sesshoumaru-sama's mother."

The last thing she heard before being swallowed by darkness was, "What? That bastard has a mother?"

And despite the nausea of shadow traveling it made her laugh.

.

Kagome sat demurely at Mizuki's side, her lower back already hurting her as Mizuki wasted no time on whipping out her fan and slapping it against her offering a remark about her posture. The older youkai looked oddly weak and frail as she sat up against the pillows that had been brought to her. Kagome looked over at Sesshoumaru under lashes as he sat straight and didn't get hit by the fan. Lips pursed she watched as the taiyoukai's eyes moved over his mothers form ensuring that she looked better than and no longer at death's door. Her throat looked somewhat swollen and lightly discolored due to the poison that had been inhaled but other than that she looked just fine.

"You look well." Sesshoumaru informed her after several moments of silence.

"Apparently, I have been sleeping for quite some time." the woman wasted no time with dalliances and pleasantries and immediately set to work. "What happened to the tajiya?"

Sesshoumaru looked at her directly when he informed her, "We kept him. The boy lives."

There was a fierceness that erupted from the female inu that startled Kagome, "You what?"

"I repeat myself for no one - not even you."

Mizuki's eyes shimmered with anger as she sat up even straighter than before, "I demand and explanation. A tajiya attempts to kill your mother and you keep it?"

Tentatively, Kagome spoke, "I forced the issue, Mizuki-sama. The boy was being manipulated under Naraku and is the younger sibling to one of my friends."

Kagome flinched when the fan opened and snapped shut but was glad when it did not come down on her, "That is no reason - "

Sesshoumaru interrupted the former Western Lady with a self suffering sigh, "It has been done, mother."

Mizuki, though she was Sesshoumaru's mother, held her tongue. Though she had birthed the killing perfection a single fact remained - he was the Western Lord.

It would do her no good to be mouthy especially now that she held a seat on the council and answered to him directly.

A few moments passed before the former Western Lady queried, "And what will happen now to him?"

Sesshoumaru turned to Kagome and she realized that he was waiting on her to answer. With a quiet 'oh' she began to speak rapidly, "I have decided that Kohaku can go where he pleases. He has just been reunited with his sister but should he stay here, Takeshi though it to be a good idea to offer him to Cerdwin if he chooses."

Mizuki seemed thoughtful as she nodded her lightly, "He did sneak into the Western House. I do think it would be a nice fit." She hummed to herself and then that was all that needed to be said on the subject so she mkoved on, "And what else? Anything that needs to be brought to my attention? The luncheon?"

Kagome spoke again and this time her voice was strong as she entered territory she felt better discussing, "We found through Kohaku that it is not a Lord that Naraku deals with but rather a Lady. The luncheon went fine, they were catty, but many things were said. Land had been acquired in South by the East potentially without the South's knowledge - which caused the Eastern Lady to grow pale when she mentioned it. The North is very petty at this moment - her feelings to her mate are extremely negative. The East is suffering greatly at this time due to the gluttonous Lord and Lady. I feel that if any of the three were pushed they could easily betray their mate to work with Naraku."

Mizuki was silent as she glanced at Sesshoumaru, "Your miko is correct. This does not bode well then."

Sesshoumaru chose to speak after a moment of contemplation, "The Obsidian have rebelled."

"They what?"

Kagome sat straight and took a deep breath, "Takeshi is mine now and in order to keep him the youngest son was fought and killed. Grief drove Yasumoto mad and he lashed out."

Citrine hues so much like Sesshoumaru's widened, "Our enemies just continue to pile. What has been done?"

"Nothing, however, it is likely we will need to squash that little rebellion before pressing onto much larger matters." Sesshoumaru answered.

"And how do you plan to do so?"

"It is likely we will need to send in one of the sects. I will lead the attack and we will remove the Obsidian Head and likely place his eldest in charge."

Mizuki snorted, rather inelegantly, and stated, "Easier said then done. Getting through the forest will be difficult."

Sesshoumaru's eyes gleamed, "Not if my half-brother would offer his assistance."

Anger pulsed in the room and Mizuki's voice was thick, "That mutt? For what reason would he possible assist?"

Kagome's cerulean hues narrowed and she didn't stop to think when she scolded, "I will not stand for you to insult my friend, Mizuki-sama."

"You are treading, miko, on very thin ice. I like you. I truly do, however, my feelings toward that hanyou - "

Kagome interrupted her without a care for consequences. All she knew was that Inuyasha was being insulted and no one insulted him in front of her, not even the former Western Lady, "Inuyasha is here and you will either stay away from him or be courteous if you come across him."

Mizuki stopped.

She was so still that Kagome thought she might have stopped breathing.

She turned to Sesshoumaru, her eyes filled with anger, shock, hurt, and even humiliation.

"You let him stay in this house?" she asked so, so quietly that Kagome barely heard her.

Sesshoumaru observed his mother. He understood on some level that Inuyasha was the bastard son of his father, proof that he had betrayed his mate, and it was likely something very difficult for Mizuki to come to terms with even after all these centuries but he would spare her no details despite the way his heart lightly squeezed in his chest at her expression, "He is a guest."

Youki pulsed from female inu-youkai and she turned to the miko, crimson bleeding in her eyes, "Leave, miko, leave now. I need to speak to my son."

Kagome turned to Sesshoumaru whom surreptitiously nodded his head and Kagome fled from the room just as youki pulsed outward and though Mizuki's voice was not raised, Kagome could almost feel the anger it contained.

"Takeshi." Kagome called. Her silent shadow appeared at her side and she murmured, "Take me to my room, please? I'm very tired all of a sudden."

Vibrant hues stared down at the miko, eyes soft and he grasped her fingers gently within his as the shadows swallowed them.

They appeared beside Kagome's bed and fully dressed she slipped between the covers suddenly exhausted with how the day turned out.

"Can I do anything for you?" Tajeshi queried and for a moment he didn't think Kagome would answer.

Several long moments passed before she answered, "It hasn't been very long, Takeshi, and yet much has happened."

Taking a seat beside her, he nodded his head, "Yes, Kagome-sama, much has happened."

"I feel like I've been saying that a lot." she muttered with a humorless chuckle. "What happens now, do you know?"

Takeshi mulled his response over before answering, "The Obsidian must be stopped. Then we plan for war."

"Who is our enemy though?" she finally asked in frustration.

Takeshi ran clawed fingers through her hair, from her temple to the tips, "They will show themselves soon enough."

"There are so many unknown factors and honestly, I'm a little scared."

A smirk curled Takeshi's lips as he murmured, "Don't be, Kagome-sama. If there is one thing Sesshoumaru-sama does effectively and efficiently... it is war. He was bred of it and born of it."

Kagome felt at ease under the claws of her companion and she couldn't help but flush crimson at the remembrance of how she felt earlier with those clawed hands cupping her cheeks so gently.

Takeshi was not confused when he saw the crimson on her cheeks. He knew what she was thinking of - he had saw her eyes glaze over earlier when he had touched her in what was likely more intimate then his current actions. He was not lacking in knowledge when it came to females but the miko in front of him consistently did things that surprised him.

Slowly, he leaned forward and nuzzled her cheek with his own and murmured a light, "Do not worry so much, Kagome-sama. All will be well in West - you will see." Quieter still he murmured a soft, "Goodnight." into the shell of her ear that caused her to flare an even brighter crimson.

And Takeshi disappeared with hope blossoming in his chest.

.

Morning dawned and Sesshoumaru made his way toward the dojo to go through his morning routine. As he walked through the many halls he decided that maybe this morning, after the hellish evening he had his mother, he would work in the outer dojo. The cold chill would seep into his flesh and bring him some form of peace. With a deep breath he changed his direction and made his way outside. As he entered the dojo he went to the center and waited for his usual morning visitor. He didn't wait long for soon he heard soft foot falls and chattering teeth as the miko entered and shut the door behind her.

She was wrapped in a thick blanket, wearing small shoes that she had called 'slippers', and took a seat against the wall.

Her eyes were slightly sleepy but when she saw him, she waggled her fingers in his direction, a quick smile curling her features.

He inclined his head at her and before he could start, she cleared her throat.

He turned to her, brow lifted, and she smiled sheepishly.

Her scent wafted around the room and he decided, he enjoyed her silent presence, and that he had felt slightly... off when she was bedridden.

It was much like the time she had gone home.

It was likely because he was a creature that enjoyed routine and she had wormed herself into said routine.

Soon he began to drill until sweat lightly slicked his form but the sun had not risen over the horizon.

He stopped though, thoughtful, as he turned to look at the fascinated miko.

She had always been fascinated.

Curious he asked her, "Would you like to learn?"

Kagome jumped at the sound of his voice. Sesshoumaru never spoke until he was done and he still had more to do. After registering what he asked Kagome's eyes widened marginally though her excitement was on the air, "Really?" Sesshoumaru offered her no confirmation. He and Takeshi had taught her much in regards to training with her energy and energy weapons but there was still much. Only her death would bring about a new Western Lady and there would no doubt be assassination attempts. His mother was youkai and though she was not a fighter in any sense she was definitely able to defend herself from any who would harm her. She had her youki and even those of higher birth trained in the basics of defense. Although she was a miko, she was also ningen and if something happened where her energy failed her or even that her guard was incapacitated she would still have her physical strength.

There was little art in fighting to the death.

And he and Takeshi had not had time to teach her the art and beauty that was combat.

It was more teaching her what she needed to know to survive and live.

Now though, in these mornings that she had invaded, he could teach her the grace of a warrior.

He did not wait long for the miko to nod her head and drop the blankets that surrounded her.

She shivered at the cold but walked forward, discarding her slippers as she came closer. She wore a lavender sleeping yukata but he would teach her nothing that was too strenuous - just the beginner moves that even a pup could learn. She approached tentatively, curious but still eager to learn what he could teach her. She nibbled her bottom lip, an action she often did when she was nervous and she queried, "Why teach me? Women are not often taught the way of any form of fighting. I know because I hear the way the other women talk about Sango - they're scared of her because she knows how to defend herself."

Sesshoumaru mulled over her words and offered her a glance through cool, but not distant hues, "Think, miko. How often have you run into female youkai that can battle just as well as any male?" He saw her pause and the thoughts slivered along her features, taking note of the many she had come across. He continued on, patient, urging her to understand, "Many, I am sure. Granted, many females rely on their youki more than there physical strength but most have true combat training. The lower class, specifically, have more training then the higher class but training nonetheless is provided to most."

"But why train me? I don't have that same strength that Cerdwin does or I am sure Nalia does as well?" Kagome had seen the subtle muscles that hid under the kimono's she had worn.

"Because you are only ningen, miko, and formal training should be conducted. Takeshi and I taught you to fight for your life - to be able to meet challenge without fear but combat should be appreciated in all its forms - this includes traditional katas. You should know a formal art of combat - merely not just how to dodge, create weapons, and attack when the opponent is weak. What if you meet an assassin? They are trained in more than the art of stealth. Your tajiya is a perfect example - the boy knows many art forms and at hand to hand I am sure his sister can be formidable."

And she was.

Kagome knew this first hand after seeing her in action.

Inclining his head at her, Sesshoumaru was about to begin but she stood there, nibbling that damnable lip of hers and quickly asked, "H-How is your m-mother?"

Narrowing his eyes at her Sesshoumaru stood straight, voice cooler than before, "I thought we broke you of that habit. Stuttering is sorely unbecoming, miko." She quickly apologized and he continued on, "She is fine. She is being emotional, as she is prone to be, and throwing a tantrum, as she is prone to do. She forgets herself - this is no longer her House, rather it is mine and at this time it is yours as well. Your guests, be it a hanyou or a ningen, are welcome."

"But she was upset, Sesshoumaru-sama, about Inuyasha because - "

Sesshoumaru's voice cut sharply, "I know why she was upset, miko, more than you realize, I know. She will not be kind but nor will she embarrass herself by making a scene toward my half-brother because despite the fact that is a hanyou, he is still just that, my half-brother and he is still an Heir to Western Throne despite being a bastard. He has more right to be here than she. My father's blood runs through his veins as well."

"I thought the lands came from your mother's side."

Sesshoumaru nodded, "They did, however, upon her mating she lost all rights and power. Her family remained in the palace but they held no power. In fact, when I was born I held more weight on what could be done in the West then she."

Tentatively she questioned, "So Inuyasha doesn't have to leave?"

"Would you be pleased if he did?" he shot back, head tilted to the side curiously.

The pose reminded of her of a inu and she always thought it was interesting when he did that, however, now was not to the time to think about it. "No." she responded strongly, chin jutted somewhat forward, head held high in a pose he recognized as her being stubborn. "I wouldn't and I wouldn't stay at any placed where Inuyasha wasn't accepted - or any of my friends for that matter."

"Then he stays."

"Just like that?" she asked, brows furrowed.

"Just like that." he conceded and Kagome's smile was worth the trouble his mother had caused him that night. "Are there any further delays or can we begin? I believe I have indulged your curiosity enough this morning."

She huffed but nodded her head, "Yes, I believe you did." she stated haughtily and his lips twitched at the corners.

Slowly, he lifted a hand and placed it on her head, her raven hair soft to the touch. He let it rest there briefly and she stood like an eager puppy accepting what affection is could from it's master, "Then let us begin."

He was dubious but he thought the shadows might have darkened around them that morning.

.

Kagome was bathed and dressed and ready for breakfast.

She was excited as she opened the double doors leading to the informal dining area and closed them behind her and the sight that greeted her made her feel warm.

Sango was eagerly chatting with Kohaku - discussing everything and nothing.

Inuyasha was greedily stuffing his face, glaring at Takeshi from over his bowl.

Miroku spoke in soft tones to Sesshoumaru who was no doubt impressed by the houshi's knowledge and wit.

Everything had been going so well this morning that she couldn't stop the smile that bloomed along her features.

For a moment, as her friends relaxed and mingled around her, she thought maybe - just maybe - there wouldn't be too much to worry about.

Maybe everything would be alright because now? Nothing seemed to matter.

That was until it did matter.

It mattered when Akihiro burst through the doors.

It mattered when his features were so wild she thought he was loosing himself to a baser instinct.

It mattered when his voice boomed in the suddenly silent room his warning plain and clear, "The obsidian will be at our doors!"

Sesshoumaru did not move.

But when he spoke there was a coldness that reminded her that Sesshoumaru was still Sesshoumaru and he had often tried to kill her and her friends.

Kagome looked at the Western Lord and watched as the softness she hadn't even realized was there faded and was replaced by crisp detachment.

"How many days?"

Akihiro closed his ever changing orbs, "Fifteen days. No more."

"And you are certain?" he challenged, his eyes sharpening as he leaned forward, hands clasped before him.

The hell hound's eyes opened and they were more serious then Kagome had ever seen, "This was not a vision of possible futures Sesshoumaru-sama, this was an exact future. It has been decided. I do not know how or the exact time or even where they will attack from but it is set in stone that they will attack."

It was silent and Sesshoumaru seemed unmoving. Minutes passed and Kagome quietly called his name, "Sesshoumaru?"

What ever stupor he was in, he was immediately pulled from and he nodded his head at his Captain of the Guard, "I understand. We cannot have a full scale battle with the Obsidian Clan at the heart of these lands. Nishi no Kokoro cannot fall for any reason."

Takeshi spoke, his lips a thin line, blood draining from his face, "You don't mean - "

Sesshoumaru nodded curtly, "I do. We must go to them."

"But assassination?"

His eyes were cold and unyielding when he looked at his former General, "You know as well as I do, cut off the head and the body will follow. Yasumoto is the head and the head is sick. We must remove him and set someone new in power. One of your brothers."

"And what will stop them from seeking vengeance?"

Sesshoumaru scoffed, "You know as well as I your brothers only want to be head of clan. They do not care how as long as it comes to one or the other soon."

"Is it necessary?" Kagome found herself asking quietly.

Sesshoumaru looked to her and she found it hard not to flinch, "It is."

"Who will you send?" Takeshi asked.

Sesshoumaru turned back to the other inu and mulled it over, "Some of Cerdwin's men."

"I must go." Takeshi stated strongly. "I must do it. I must be the one to end my father's life."

Kagome spoke up then, horror written on her features, filling her voice, "You barely made it our of there! We barely made it out of there!"

Sesshoumaru turned back to Kagome, watching the drama before him unfold.

"Nonetheless I must go." Takeshi responded.

She turned to Sesshoumaru her cerulean orbs begging him to help her. He shook his head ever so slightly, letting her know that this was not his battle, "He is your guard and he requires your consent. You are his champion, not I."

"And I would be a poor champion if I let you go, Takeshi!" she growled angrily. "Don't ask me this! Don't ask me to do this!"

Tears burned behind her eyes and her nose was beginning to itch but they made eye contact - emerald to cerulean.

And she knew.

He would not verbally ask her.

But the question was clear in his eyes.

"...and my mother?"

She didn't want to let him go. She couldn't let him go.

"My mother has been dead for centuries."

A few days ago he had been on the brink of death and he wanted to go back to that hell hole?

"Murdered – by my father."

Her voice trembled, "Are you sure?"

Takeshi only nodded his head.

"You're asking too much of me."

His eyes were turning just as cold as taiyoukai's beside him - turning him into the man she met upon arrival in the West.

Her heart was breaking.

"He's your father." she pleaded softly, hoping that he would just stop looking at her like that.

But he didn't.

She couldn't speak.

She couldn't breathe.

She wanted to deny him.

She was going to deny him.

But when she spoke they were not the words she wanted to say.

"You have my permission to go."

And she couldn't help but feel that she had just consented to send her guard to his death.

So she fled the room.

For she couldn't face her friends.

Especially the one so eager to leave her side.
