"I think we should move in together." He's nonchalant, he really is.
"I'm sorry?" She blinks, affronted that he would even suggest it, that he would even dare think about it. "Have you lost your damn mind?"
He navigates her kitchen with ease, opening cabinets and drawers, taking out mugs and sugar and the milk from her fridge, starting the coffee maker that spurts awake.
He showed up at her door before dawn, obviously with not much sleep in his system, but still with not a hair out of place on his pretty little head, clothes perfectly pristine and with a sleepy Shinigami floating behind him.
Eden is severely sleep deprived, a tad delirious and she's clearly still stuck in a dream because she can't possibly understand why he would think saying this aloud would be a good idea.
"Not that I know of." He tells her casually, like this is not at all something completely crazy to be discussing at four thirty in the morning. "I think we should move in together."
He places a cup of coffee in front of her, pushes milk and sugar on her side of the kitchen isle because he takes his black and finally takes a seat. He offers a smile that is meant to be innocent and she just knows –
"What happened?" Her eyes narrow; just because she isn't awake yet doesn't mean she lost all her braincells.
He opens his mouth, but Ryuk –
"The Second Kira made contact." Ryuk beats him to the punch, offering a lazy, sleepy grin. "She…" But the Death God doesn't finish, merely laughs like it's the funniest thing he's heard.
"This really has nothing to do –" She disregards him and instead focuses on the Shinigami.
"She? A woman?" It's not that she's sexist, serial killers can be whatever gender they want to be, it's just that the Second Kira, well…
From what she'd seen, from the way they were reckless and at times plainly idiotic, it seems a bit cliché that they would be female – and they would also be drawn to the First Kira, want to lay claim to him, devoted, but reckless and with a Death Note…
"Misa Amane." Ryuk offers and he's usually so good at withholding information that he's either too sleepy or simply wants to cause a rift between her and Light. Either way, she trusts the Death God more than her supposed boyfriend.
But, Misa Amane, it rings a bell. Where did she…
"She's a model and an idiot." He runs a hand through his hair with a sigh. "She showed up at my door claiming she found my missing notebook, she thought she was being clever and it was, on the surface. She'll make a mistake soon, especially with L roaming around and if she's around me… well."
"Light." She takes a sip of coffee, it does nothing to appease her nerves. "She said she was in love with you, didn't she? She said she wanted to be with you, to help you."
"A lot less coherently, but yes and she…" He shakes his head. "She also threatened to kill the people who stood in her way and since she has a Shinigami who is in love with her, a Death Note and the eyes…"
Ryuk had told her about the eyes even before she met Light, when he was still just an hallucination visiting her at night and ate her apples and watches TV with her.
"Light…" It's not that she's particularly afraid to die, but she'd rather not if it can be avoided. "We should stop…"
"No, we really shouldn't." He swallows coffee and sends her a look. "I can't allow that."
"If it's because you're afraid I'll tell someone if we stop seeing each other…"
"I know you won't tell, Eden." He seems, angry maybe. She's a tad pissed that he would rather put her in danger than just stop seeing her, pissed and tired, an awful combination. "You have to be here, at my side."
"You're so fucking selfish, you know that?" Her hands are shaking, she grips the handle of her cup. "You'd rather put me in danger than let me go –"
"I can't let you go." He says it harshly, like she should know, like he's tried and failed. "Even if I wanted to, I can't let you go, Eden."
"Why not?" She's stubborn, keeps powering through, too sleepless to realize that she won't like the answer.
He bites the inside of his cheek and glares at her.
"You're smart enough, I'm sure you can figure it out."
"Stop it! God, for once can't you stop playing your stupid games and be straight with me? I'm tired of your games, Light." She doesn't mean to raise her voice, he's just so infuriating sometimes.
He blinks at her, obviously not expecting her to raise her voice either. It does seem to calm him, though, and the anger drains slowly until he simply sighs.
"Eden…" And her name, it's almost soft, which is a first, but then; "I won't allow you to leave me, not in this life." It's the way he says it, calm, soft, even relaxed, like he can't find anything wrong with what he just said.
She'd figured one day he would just get bored with her, toss her away, probably kill her. But now, she isn't so sure anymore. It feels like a confession of love and a threat served up like a simple fact.
If she tried to run, he'd make sure she didn't have a choice but to come back. He'd dangle her friends and family in front of her, threaten to kill them one by one until she came back.
She is stuck with him, for all eternity apparently.
"Then…" She starts off, certainly more awake than before. "Perhaps you should take care of this Second Kira before we move in together, ne?" She tilts her head to the side and raises an eyebrow.
He blinks at her and then offers a boyish smile, it gives him dimples, makes you forget he has blood on his hands.
"Of course."
Ryuk snores when he sleeps, floating between them.
a/n : on Saturday, it will be two years since I started this fic. I can't picture Light even confessing in a normal way, I think this is as close as he'll get. And Eden won't ever say it either, but this is her way of accepting it. I mean... these are not normal people at all. I hope you enjoyed the chapter, it was a bit longer. Thank you all for sticking with me after two years, your encouragement, opinions and comments mean so much. I hope you're well and I'll see you next time. xo
