Chapter Eighteen
"Welcome to Chicago," the pilot announced as the airplane began to land in none other than the city I met Edward in. I could already see the Sears building make it's way through the overbearing clouds. I couldn't believe we were landing in Chicago right now.
"We're home," I whispered to Edward as the plane's wheels hit the runway.
"Yes, love. We are," He agreed as he hugged my side. I smiled as I looked out the window of the plane to see some of Chicago's monuments peaking out from behind the airport. I haven't been to the windy city since Edward left me. It was too painful to come back here without him. All of our most cherished memories were here. When Renesmee was born Alice, Jasper, and I got the hell out of here and moved to the woods of Wisconsin.
Anyway we just left Tennessee. We were there for about a week. Most of it was spent skiing, sledding, and having snowball fights. All that wonderful winter fun. Emmett and I also showed everyone where are parents were buried. My parents finally got to meet their grand babies, after all these years. Besides that Emmett and I did a lot of reliving of our childhood, showing everyone how our lives were like before we became vampires. It was nice to relive our human lives for a few days, but honestly, even though my parents were gone, I wouldn't trade my vampire life for anything in the world. I know it's kind of selfish of me, but I have everything I've always wanted, and I couldn't be happier.
"I can't wait to go back to the apartment, and go to the park we use to meet up at. Oh, I just want to relive this whole thing with you, Edward," I said to him excitedly, sighing as I leant against the headrest.
"Me too, love." He chuckled, taking my hand in his. "It'll be nice to take a trip to the past."
I smiled as the seat belt ding came on the loud speaker and the pilot began to speak to us, telling us about the weather. From there we got up from our seats and headed towards the exit of the airport with the rest of the family.
"I can't wait to explore Chicago," Emmett announced as we past by all the little shops. He was walking with Emalie's little hand in his and Rosalie by his side. "I wanna get my inner Blues Brother on."
"Oh man, the Blues Brothers. I loved those guys," Jasper chimed in.
"Who are the Blues Brothers?" Emalie asked, looking up at her father with a curious look.
"They're these guys who use to wear these cool suits and they sung awesome songs back in the day. Uncle Eddie will play you one of their songs if you'd like," Emmett said, jerking a thumb to Edward.
"Uncle Eddie! Can you play me a blues brothers song?" Emalie asked, looking towards Edward with an eager look.
"Of course Emmie." Edward smiled at her. Emalie smiled back as she ran to Edward so he could give her a hug. He chuckled as he swung her around in his arms. Somedays I really wish Edward was there with Renesmee as a child, he's so good with Emalie.
"Just saying, next vacation I say we go to Texas," Jasper announced, smirking a bit. "We could definitely all find our inner cowboys." I rolled my eyes as I nudged him playfully.
"We could go to England too, maybe we'll dig up some old secrets about our dear old Carlisle!" Emmett teased, patting Carlisle on the back.
"Oh Emmett, you won't find a single thing about me. I promise you that," Carlisle said, chuckling. "You aren't going to find anything embarrassing."
"I'll find something Poppa C. You'll see. We do have a forever to find out," Emmett said, winking. We all chuckled as we then headed out of the airport and onto the streets where we had a limo waiting for us.
"We're going to head to the house to freshen up and from there we all thought it would be fun to go to Millennium park to hang out and ice skate," Esme told me as everyone approached the limo. "But I was wondering, if maybe instead, you and Edward might want to go relive the past together while we're out. Let you both have some downtime together."
"Are you sure?" I asked, looking slightly towards Renesmee. "We just got here. Plus, I don't want to leave you guys just yet."
"Mom, go. I'm not a baby anymore. Everyone here will be fine. Go, have fun. Please," Renesmee said, taking my hands in hers. "Plus I want you and dad to have some alone time here. You both deserve it."
"Come on love, it'll be fun," Edward told me, wrapping his arms around my waist. He began to kiss my neck lovingly, causing me to slowly melt in his arms. I could feel a small little gasp escape my lips at his touch.
"Fine," I agreed, giving in.
"Great. I really can't wait to go back in time with you." Edward smiled at me, placing a kiss on my lips. I felt myself melt again as I went to kiss him back with a little bit more passion. His hands wrapped around my waist as our lips molded together.
"Eww, for the last time, not in front of me!" Emmett cried out, covering his eyes. "You people are gross!"
"Emmett, you are the horniest man I've ever met in my life. I'd stop if I were you," I said to my brother, narrowing my eyes at him.
The others laughed at this while Emmett glared at me.
"Isabella Marie, I am watching you," He said, pointing a finger at me.
"I know. Now go have fun with your wife and daughter," I told him, shoeing him away with my hand. "Renesmee, stay safe. We'll see everyone back at the park."
"I will mother! Have fun!" Renesmee called out to Edward and I as we headed the other direction.
We took a cab all the way into the heart of Chicago. From there we began to walk up the city streets. As we walked memories seemed to flood back in my head. Things I didn't even expect to recall, like simple little walks I would have with Edward or places we would hang out at.
We then approached a small park. It was located right on the water and it wasn't very big. Millions of flowers were planted all over the place and it looked like something out of a fairytale.
Though, there was something about it that was oddly familiar. At first I thought it could've been a park I passed by when I went to work, but then I saw the bench, right by the old oak tree.
"Is that the park we-"
"Yes. This is the park, Bella," Edward whispered, kissing my temple.
I felt the venom in my eyes begin to cloud my vision when I saw the old park bench. I can't believe it's still here, and when we met it was over sixty years ago. I didn't think it would stay that long.
"Can we go?" I asked him softly.
"Of course, love. I don't see why you need to ask though." He chuckled. I rolled my eyes as I then dashed over there with him.
I could still remember the day we met. It was one of my clearest human memories. I was here on a lunch break when a mysterious man came up to me. He was nervous at first, but then he began to slowly talk to me. He was strange, very strange, but something about him attracted me. Next thing I knew I fell in love with the mysterious man. He became my heart, my soul, my everything.
That's when an idea came to mind. I smiled wildly as I turned to Edward.
"I want to show you something," I told Edward, sitting him down on the bench with me.
"What?" He questioned, his eye brows furrowed together in confusion.
I grinned as I then closed my eyes and slowly let my shield down. From there I let a bunch of memories flow through my mind.
The first day we met.
Our first kiss.
Memorable dates.
The day he saved me from James.
The day we made love.
and Renesmee's childhood...
I opened my eyes slowly to see he had a shocked expression on his face. I giggled as I added an 'I love you' in his head before allowing my shield to come up again.
"How...How did you...Did I just see-"
"Yes. It's something I was working on. You like?" I asked, wrapping my arms around his neck.
Edward nodded with a grin as we both gently moved in for a kiss. His lips molded to mine as we shared a chaste kiss on the park bench.
"Now you know, no one has ever loved anyone as much as I loved you," I whispered to him, brushing his face with my finger tips.
"There is one exception," He said, chuckling. I giggled as I went to kiss him once more on the lips. He kissed me back with the same passion, our tongues dancing in one another's mouths. His hands running through my hair and mine running through his.
We both pulled away, looking at one another in the eyes even though I'm pretty sure some people were eying us. I heard one old man mutter, "Those crazy youngsters."
Edward and I both laughed as we got up and walked away from the park bench and towards the apartment building where I use to live in. We were able to see inside of it because the place was up for rent.
I couldn't help but smile when I saw my first place. There were so many memories here.
When we came upon my old bedroom, the same bedroom Edward and I made love in, I felt like blushing, even though I couldn't blush. I know if I could though, I'd be a nice tomato red.
We did look at the rest of the apartment, and it was very lovely. It was much more nicer than what I remember of it. It was renovated and modernized a bit, but it still has the old charm I use to love about it. I did love that they redid some of the things in the apartment that were either missing or needed fixing. It's much more nicer now.
"Hey, Bella," Edward whispered to me as we left the apartment building.
"Hmmm?" I hummed.
"Did I forget to tell you, Esme and Carlisle happen to own the building..."
"Wait...What?" I questioned, frowning as I looked at my fiancé. "They own it so-"
"So the apartment is ours," He murmured, kissing my cheek.
"But when?" I looked up at him with surprise. I couldn't believe he did that for me. That was so thoughtful. Too thoughtful.
"Well actually they bought it a little bit after I um...Left you. They were looking for places for real estate and thought the building could have potential...Plus I may or may have not suggested to them to buy," He said, scratching the back of his head awkwardly.
"Oh...We'll that's kind of great. We have our own place for when we come to Chicago," I mused, taking his hand in mine. I loved the way our fingers intertwined perfectly with one another.
"Well there is also my home. My childhood home actually," Edward said, taking a turn towards the rich colonial part of Chicago.
"Your childhood home?" I questioned as we approached a familiar part of the city.
"I took you to it once when we were together in the past," he told me. "And it's actually where we're all staying."
"Really?" I whispered in awe.
"Yeah. Come on, I want to show you something," he said, tugging my hand towards the homes. I smiled as we went up the block and didn't stop until we approached a large home. It was an old town house, well maybe not a town house. The place was a mansion. It was the most charming home I've ever seen, next to the Cullen home in Forks.
I think I remember some of it, but it's kind of fuzzy. Some features of the house seemed very familiar, like the door and the windows.
"It's very beautiful, I kind of remember it," I mused, leaning my head against Edward's arm.
"Thanks...Come on, I want to show you where we'll be staying," He said, bringing me closer to the home.
Inside the home was beautiful. Everything seemed like a blast from the past. It looks like Edward and the Cullen's didn't do much renovating. The place still has it's early 1900 charm. From the furniture to the grand piano in the middle of the foyer. There was also a parlor and a glamorous dinning room. The only two modern rooms were the kitchen and a den. The kitchen was pretty much the same, it's just it has all the modern appliances and knick knacks.
Meanwhile the den was completely different from the rest of the house. Edward told me the den use to be the maid's quarters, but they decided to make that part of the house a bit modern with the big plasma screen and leather couches. Something tells me Emmett might have had a say in this design.
"Come on, I want to show you my old room," Edward whispered to me.I smiled as we headed up the stairs until we got to a certain room. It was boyish. If that's one word I had to use to describe it. It was fancy though with the old furniture and big windows. It even had french doors that lead outside to a small balcony that overlooked the entire city.
Inside the room there were blue and white checkered sheets with mahogany furniture. As I observed Edward's old room, I came across a photo of a little boy with a baseball cap next to his parents on the dresser.
"Is that you?" I asked, pointing to the photo. Edward half smiled as he came closer to me and wrapped an arm around my shoulders.
"Yeah, that's me with my parents," He said, brushing off some of the dust from the photo. "I was about ten in that photo and my parents took me to my first ball game. I used to love baseball so much. I would play it in old parking lots with my friends and sometimes play catch with my father when he wasn't busy."
"Really?" I hummed as I took the photo off the dresser and looked at it. "You look like your mother, but you definitely have your father's hair..Like the messy-thick part. But mostly I see your mother in you."
"Yeah, everyone said I looked like her. I had her eyes and her bronze hair. Everyone thought my mother was a beauty though, I found it kind of weird, but that's because I was her son. I can recall that people use to call her Miss Liz or Beth and my father was always Edward Senior. I was little Edward Jr. I used to hate being called Junior or Eddie, but my mother would sometimes call me Eddie. She was the only one I would let." Edward chuckled sadly. "I miss them...My memories may not be fully there, but I do miss them." He sighed as he sat down on the bed.
"I know you do," I said softly, rubbing his shoulder.
"Yeah...You know I wish they could've met you. My mother would have loved you. My father, he would have been entertained with your personality, but never the less he would have loved you too...And Renesmee, oh god they would have adored Renesmee. She's everything my mother wanted in a grandchild," He said softly. I then let Edward rest his head against my shoulder for a few moments as I kissed the top of his head, massaging his scalp.
"It's okay to miss them. I miss mine all the time," I said softly.
"Yeah...It's just...It's been awhile. That's all," He told me, getting up from his spot on the bed.
"I know," I replied as I got up to stand with him. I then went to go place a soft kiss on his lips. "Hey, how about we go to Millennium park for ice skating. I'm sure the others are having fun without us."
Edward chuckled as he then took my hand and we made our way towards the park. When we got there the others were all ice skating, even Carlisle and Esme. By the looks of it though, it looks like our family rented the whole entire rink to ourselves. Leave it to the Cullen family.
I smiled as Edward and I both got on skates to join the others. It was pretty fun considering I haven't ice skated in a rink like this in awhile. Last time was probably when we went to New York City and skated at Rockefeller Center.
Emalie was squealing as Renesmee and Alice held onto her hands, swinging her back and forth on the ice. Rosalie and Emmett were both chasing one another while Esme and Carlisle casually skated, holing one another's hands.
"Hey Bella Boo." I looked to see Jasper come right next to me. "Race ya."
"Oh your on." I grinned at him, chuckling. "Edward? Want to join?
"No. I'll let you two have fun. I'm going to join Emalie and Renesmee," he said, kissing my cheek before skating away towards the two girls.
"So. How's Eddie boy been treating you?" Jasper asked me as we skated with one another.
"Good. In fact, I want to know; how are you Jazz my dear boy?" I asked him. I haven't talked to Jasper in a very long time, considering the fact I was too busy catching up with everyone.
"I've been good. I can tell you've been happy." He smiled at me.
"I'm sorry I haven't been spending time with you or Alice lately," I blurted out. "I've just..."
"Bells, don't apologize. You found your mate again and your thought to be dead brother. I don't blame you sis," He said, smiling at me. "Anyway you've missed the two for years now and you're so close to them. So, once again, I don't blame you."
"Thanks Jazz...It's just...Your my brother too. Emmett's my blood, but your my vampire brother." I smiled at him. He chuckled as he went to place a kiss on my forehead.
"Yeah. And nothing's gonna change that. We're all siblings now...So anyway, Emmett! Want to help me chase our sister?" He asked, turning to my bear of a brother.
"Why certainly, brother Jasper," He said, coming over to me.
"You guys are crazy!" I giggled as they then chased me and even Rose around the ice skating rink. By the end of the day everyone was chasing one another and soon we were ice skated out. Emalie was asleep and Renesmee was close to falling asleep, so we decided to go back home.
Later that night I laid in Edward's arms in his old room as we looked out and viewed the city lights of Chicago. I was dressed in a silk blue nightgown Rose and Alice got me as a little engagement present the other day.
"This was a nice vacation," I muttered into Edward's chest. "We went back to our roots, visited the past, and now we've got the future to look forward to."
"We do. To think, it all started here." Edward smiled as he went to kiss my lips. I grinned in pleasure as I hungrily kissed back. "Whatever happens, I'm always going to be by your side."
"I know. As will I...Love you," I whispered between a kiss.
"I love you to the moon and back," He replied as we kissed again.
Chicago will always be our first home, and even Tennessee for me...But in the end, even though places do define homes, my home will always be with Edward. Wherever he is, will be my home.
I'll open up and be your parachute
and I'll never let you down
so open up and be my human angel
and we'll only hit the ground
