Chapter 14: Flying or Falling?
Brittany getting so close to her did rattle her a little bit. But it was in the best way possible. Being close to her made Santana's heart race faster than anything she's ever felt. Even the first time she flew…being with Brittany made her feel like she was flying for the first time all over again. Maybe it was because she was really falling for the first time. Falling for the first time where she couldn't stop herself mid-air. She didn't have time to think about that right now. She needed to help the people crying out her name. Well, her other name.
The multiple cries of help came from a terrible accident on the interstate. Superwoman turned four cars back over and flew two people to the hospital before there was another cry for help that sounded far away. She didn't want to get wrapped up in too much today. She really just wanted to get back to Brittany to take care of her.
She quickly wrapped up all of the 'heroing' as her parents liked to call it. By her count, she had only been gone an hour or so. She dropped her super suit back her apartment and changed into more comfortable attire while she was there. She was positive Brittany was going to rope her into a session of Disney movies. She grabbed a couple milkshakes on the way as a peace offering for leaving so quickly.
The heroine pulled her phone out to text her partner that she was on the way back. It didn't take long for her phone to vibrate with a reply.
"Sorry that took so long, Britt." She pushed the door quickly and made her way into Brittany's living room. "I brought a peace offering might help. "
Brittany hadn't moved from the couch where Santana had left her. Wrapped up in a blanket with almost a trance like stare at the T.V. "Peace offering?" She muttered a little bit.
"Yeah," The brunette moved towards the couch to sit down with her sick friend. "I know you like more exciting stuff in your milkshake better," She shook her hand a little bit, "But I got vanilla because it still might be too much for your tummy."
"Why are you so sweet?" Brittany grabbed the cup out of the hero's hand and patted the cushion beside her. "A peace offering sounds like you're willing to stick around…I've already started the Little Mermaid, so you're going to have to suffer through it with me."
"It's not suffering if I enjoy the movie and the company." The brunette kicked her shoes off and made her way towards the couch. She settled herself down into the couch, "How are you feeling now?"
Brittany just nodded a little bit, "I feel much better. Still not back to normal, but not nearly as bad as I did this morning."
"Good," She leaned to give the blonde a small kiss on the cheek and was slightly shocked when Brittany pulled away a little.
"You were right about earlier," She cleared her throat a little bit and put her hand on Santana's thigh softly. "I did get a little worked up earlier. It didn't help my fever."
Santana didn't push the issue Brittany didn't seem to want to talk after she had pulled away from Santana and explained. The air did felt heavy to Santana. A weird shift in Brittany had happened. She could hear the change in her heart rate when she told her about the change in her fever. It made her a little anxious. She was Superwoman. She wasn't supposed to be anxious.
One movie faded into another one, Brittany had fallen asleep on and off throughout the evening. But when she was awake, she made sure to keep her distance from Santana. Well, she was close but not Brittany close. She always in Santana's personal space. Almost from the moment they met, Brittany wasn't one for boundaries.
Brittany stretched her arms above head and yawned loudly, "I'm sorry I feel asleep again. I guess being sick really took it out of me."
"It's really alright Brittany," She offered the blonde a big smile, "You really do need the rest. You should probably try and go to bed anyway. It's not late but you do need all the sleep you can get."
"You are probably right. I'm sure I'll be feeling up to going to work and to go with you to touch base with Dr. Cohen-Chang tomorrow." Brittany shifted a little uneasily on her feet as she watched Santana follow in suit.
The unsteady change in Brittany didn't get past Santana. It wasn't just that she was sick, there was something else going on with her. "Are you okay? I mean besides the obvious of you being sick." The look on Brittany's face told Santana all she needed to know even before she answered. Brittany had a telltale for when she lied. Santana saw it on her face before she spoke.
"Yeah," She stated almost matter of factly. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"I don't know," The heroine pushed her glass up the bridge of her nose slightly. "You've just seemed different since I got back. I just wanted to make sure I didn't do anything to upset you. You've been a little stand offish. I know you're sick. I'm sorry for trying to kiss you earlier. I just thought since how this afternoon was it was okay."
Brittany couldn't help but smile at the shorter woman. She thought maybe she was the one who had done something wrong earlier. After the abrupt exit Santana had made, she assumed the worst. In her mind maybe the open amount of affection wasn't something Santana was ready for. "Oh, honey. No. I thought maybe you were upset with me as quick as you left. I can get a little…aggressive I guess."
"No…not at all. I'll never be upset about being close to you," she blushed a little bit as she shifted in her seat. "I left because I really had to get something done I forgot." She rubbed the back of her neck and sighed a little. "It's going to sound stupid, but I forgot to turn in a red box movie. I know it doesn't seem like a big deal it's kind of lame too. But…" She was cut off of Brittany putting her finger on her lips.
"I don't think it's stupid," Brittany smiled at Santana softly. "I don't think I've ever even see you even leave a gum wrapper on the floor as you've walked by. You always pick it up and throw it away. It doesn't surprise me that something not being where it's supposed to be would bother you that much."
"Speaking of earlier, I actually do you want to talk about that since we haven't really," Santana breathed in deeply and rubbed the back of her neck. "Not that I'm insinuating we would go that far anytime soon."
She sat back down and motioned for Santana to follow. "I think this is a conversation we need to have with a little whine…but I guess since it's already on the table," She giggled a little bit as she closed some space between her and Santana. "You know I wasn't trying to make feel pressured into anything earlier today right?" She put her hand on the side of the shorter girl's face making sure to make eye contact. "I would never do that to you."
"I know you would never do that. We also talked about taking things slow. I don't just want to take things slow because of our friendship…" The Kryptonian closed her eyes a little and tried to think of the right words. The right words so Brittany would understand, but wouldn't let her secret out. "It's just been a long time since I dated someone long enough or felt…enough to be intimate with someone."
"Oh, Sweetie," The journalist beamed softly. She couldn't believe how incredible honest and vulnerable Santana was being with her, "I completely understand. I don't want to rush anything either." She leaned forward and kissed the other woman on the cheek. "Thank you for being so open with me. I know we know each other…but when you date someone it's just..."
"It's a different kind of knowing someone," She agreed with the blonde and nodded to herself. "I also think if we are as open and honest as we can be with each other this will continue to just keep getting better." Santana grabbed Brittany's hand and ran her finger across her knuckles. "I also think you should really try and rest now so we are on our A game for tomorrow. The boss won't accept anything less."
"You're very right," She leaned in a little and smiled at the hero softly, "It's only going to keep getting better."
Hopefully some of you are still out there. I also know it's been 84 years…I feel like this chapter is a great transition piece into other things I already have written and have been having trouble connecting. I'm not promising ASAP on an new update, but I am currently still working on this story and the flow is actually going really well. I hope to update soon!
