Chapter 30 (BPOV)
I stumbled back in fear and shock but before Riley could even touch me he was thrown back into the trees he had come from. The shield around me was like liquid glass, visible but only barely. This was what a physical shield was and it wasn't that different from the feeling I received when I 'pushed out' the mental shield, in fact, the only different was that instead of the feeling of something being pealed away from my mind, I felt something pealing away from my soul.
This was my power. My capability.
"H-How? Y-You Should not be able to do that." Laurent stuttered as a feral Riley growled as he walked out of the shadows once more.
"Nothing can stay the same, Laurent." I told him with sudden realization. "Even if you know what is going to happen, when it is going to happen. Even if you know that you are not suppose to change anything. You do. It is human nature. We-" I smiled slightly and then tilted my head to look at the brown skinned vampire who had two wolves snarling lowly at him. "We are simply too curious and instinctual."
"I-I don't understand."
I thought for a moment, but then said slowly, with measuring words. "If you knew what was going to happen to you... If you knew, say, that you were going to get bitten by a vampire on your walk home... Would you have taken the same route? Would you have asked someone to drop you home?... I would have and some would anyone else. Don't you see Laurent... From the moment we knew what was suppose to be, we changed it.
You can still stop this Laurent. So many live could be saved... Call of the Newborns, go to Alaska, there is no more Victoria or James to drag you back to the past."
Laurent, for a while, just stood there. Occasionally his eyes would flicker, his nostrils would flare or he would unconsciously clench his hand as his mind sorted through what I had told him. No one could resist such an opportunity, why would Laurent? He knew that there was a potential mate waiting for him in Alaska, I was so sure that he would stop the fighting. I was so confident in this fact that I let the physical shield drop... and that is when he attacked.
Apparently the wolves, just like me, thought that Laurent would stop. So they were taken off guard when the dread-lock vampire's eyes flashed red and sped toward me. However it didn't take them long to figure what Laurent wanted and sprang after him. Riley, of course, followed his creators lead.
I didn't know what I was doing. I could call it instinct, but pat of me knew that wasn't true. Moments after the vampires started to run towards me, with the wolves in tow, my shield once again pushed away from my soul. Although, instead of creating a bubble of protection around me, they formed a cage around the two vampires. And once that cage was complete, I watched helplessly as the invisible roof collapsed on them. Crushing their vampire bodies out of existence... not ever a drop of blood was left.
Long after they were gone and long after the war was over, I still sat in the same place that I had fallen too. I still stared at the places of where the vampires used to be. I was sad. I was shocked and, most of all, I was scared... of myself. Amias had told me that this ability was only a physical shield, but no matter how I thought about it, no physical shield could do that. No physical sheild could crush, not just a person, but a VAMPIRE out of existence.
"Nothing is what it seems to be. Power is limited by the mind, yet your mind has unlimited possibilities." A voice range in my ears, a voice that I knew all to well. Amias.
Alice's POV
Soon after the battle started.
I watch Jasper as he struggled with one of the newborn's, seeing that another would attack him from behind. In less than a second my vampire feet glided across the snow, barely leaving any footprints behind, towards my husband and just as I made it to him a newborn launched at his back. Quickly and graceful, I threw the newborn to the ground and ripped of it's head, sending a silent prayer for the soul that I had just killed. I didn't want to fight and kill, no of us did, but we didn't have a choice.
As I looked down at the headless newborn I saw another vision of two newborn vampires charging at my back. Spinning around, I banished the thoughts, this was a battle there was no time to grieve for them.
It wasn't long before the pure, white snow was litter with body parts and ash and now there was more us and the wolves than there were of the newborns. However, they still fought. Savagely. We still killed them. As painlessly as we could.
Then my mind was invaded by another vision. "You can still stop this Laurent. So many live could be saved... Call of the Newborns, go to Alaska, there is no more Victoria or James to drag you back to the past." Bella told the dark-skinned vampire as she stood in front of him, to wolves growling as they stood alert between the human and the vampire. Laurent, as Bella called him, looked to be considering her offer for a moment but suddenly his ruby red eyes darkened and he leap toward Bella. Then my vision went black.
Horrified, my eyes searched the battle field and landed on the person I was seeking for. Edward had frozen in place as he watched the vision unfold in my mind, then with a furious growl, he sent his fist into the newborn vampire that was about to attack him, running towards Bella.
Edward's POV
My mind was blinded by panic, I heard nothing and saw nothing except what I had seen in Alice's mind. Bella was in danger. I had to protect her. It was on of our most basic instincts. One that, unfortunately, we couldn't control. Me and my family knew that if anyone or anything got in the way of me getting to Bella, they were as good as dead.
When my vampire speed took me to the spot that Bella, Leah and Seth were located, I was surprised at what I saw... or, in this case, what I didn't see. There was no Laurent, or other vampires. No vampire body parts, no blood... nothing. There was just the mutts and Bella, who was staring blankly at a stop in front of her as if she was seeing the ugliest thing in creation.
"Bella." I called, rushing over her, half-panicked and half-relieved.
She blinked and then looked up at me with pleading eyes. "Edward." She whispered. Then her voice became more distressed. "I didn't mean to. I didn't know that would happen. First they were there and then they were gone. I don't know what I did. Oh God, they are gone. I did something, Edward."
"It's okay, Bella." I told her soothingly and I rubbed circles into her back and then picked her up. "It's okay." As I looked down at Bella, who was slowly relaxing in my arms, I saw what the wolves were thinking about. I watched as, like Bella said, one moment Laurent and another vampire was attacking an invisible wall/ barrier and the next they were squashed into nothing. What had happened to them? Was it really Bella? If so, how did she get such and ability? If not, who would have it and why would they save Bella?
Suddenly Bella's eyes flew open. "Stop!" She half-called, half-shouted. "Stop."
"What is it?" I asked looking down at her and she began to fidget in my arms.
"I have to hide. The Volturi and coming. They can't no I exist, not yet." Bella rushed. As soon as so mentioned the Volturi, I had started to expand my senses and they were there, running right towards the battle field where the rest of my family waited for us, the Volturi.
Not questioning Bella, I put her down and as I opened my mouth I hoped that I wouldn't regret what I was about to do. "Bella, go to the wolves. Get them to take you to the Reservation."
At this, my loves brows furrowed in confusion and her eye searched my face questioningly. Before she could ask, I answered, "The Volturi will know something is up if I am not with my family. They may use it as an excuse to come further into Forks. I can't risk them scenting you or spotting you."
For a second, Bella just stared at me, then she smiled her brightest smile. The type that made my dead heart leap with happiness. It had been a while since I had seen her smile like that. To me, it was my life, my light.
"Okay." She replied and reached out to me and cupped the back of my neck. I knew what she wanted, so I smiled and bent down and pressed my lips to hers before quickly pulling away.
Seeing her frown, I smirked playfully. "Sorry love, but the less of you I have one me, the less chance we have of getting caught."
"You make it sound as if we are teenagers sneaking out of the house at night."
"Are we not?" I asked. "I thought you told the Clearwater's you were sleeping over Sam and Emily's? You were lying, so this counts as sneaking out."
"Haha." She laughed sarcastically before climbing onto Leah's back. And then with a "I'll see you soon", she was gone.
