Chapter 4: Into the Emerald Forest
(5:30 in the morning, Auditorium.)
Izuku's eyelids fluttered around for a few moments before halfway opening. When Izuku woke up, he was greeted by the sleeping face of Yang. He had backed away, his face as red as a tomato. 'Holy crap that was too close for comfort' Izuku thought.
"Waaaaaaaake up, lazy butt!" A very energetic voice banged, it was followed with a groan. Izuku looked up from his spot to find the culprits. He watched as a female danced around a male on the ground and sang out, "It's morning! It's morning! It's morning! It's moooorning!"
The girl in question had short orange hair and turquoise eyes. Her clothing was a mix and match of some sort, with different colors and themes. She wore a collared black vest that ended at her waist, and her emblem, a hammer with a lightning bolt, was on the back. Under the vest were two layers of clothing, colored red and light-blue respectively. She also had a turquoise bow at the back of her skirt, and a white sleeveless top that formed a tiny heart shape between her cleavage and collarbone, with a white detached sleeve on each arm. She had matching fingerless gloves on each hand and sported a pink skirt that started at the waist and ended mid-thigh. Her shoes were a mix of pink and white with pink laces, displaying her emblem on their soles. She also wore armor that began at the middle of her shoulder and neck and ended by her waist.
The boy was definitely not a morning person and seemed uncomfortable at his situation. He had long black hair tied into a ponytail that ended midway down his back with a magenta streak on the left side that was the same color as his eyes. He wore a dark green, diagonally-buttoned, long-sleeved tailcoat that was red on the inside, with black and gold trimming and pink cuffs. The trimming went down the right side of his torso and formed a black collar. He wore a black, long-sleeved shirt beneath the suit and light-tan pants with black shoes.
Izuku, now fully awake, stretched out his arms as he began to get up. He'd gotten a decent amount of sleep, especially considering the nerves that he was dealing with late the night before. Rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. Rolled up his sleeping bag he wasn't the only one awake. Blake's spot was empty of her being. The tall serious guy who stopped the girl's argument was making his way to the locker rooms with a scheduled practice. The only other ones awake were two in the corner jumping with what Izuku guessed was looked in the mirror brushing his teeth. The two from earlier were there and were… continuing the conversation. The boy wasn't a thing as the girl continued. "I can't believe we've been at Beacon for a full twenty-four hours! Not that I thought we'd get kicked out or anything. I mean, you're the perfect student and I'm… Well, I'm me! But it's just crazy, you know?"
Izuku spat into the sink and went to grab his bag from the ballroom. More and more people were getting up one after the other. And it looked as though every person he's made friends with so far had already gone.
And there the two were, the female grabbing a hair brush and combing her hair while the male tied up his sleeping bag. "We've been together for sooooooooo long! What are the odds that we'd still be together? Well, not 'together-together'…" Her cheeks took on a slightly pinkish tint as she thought about what she just said. "Not that I'm saying you're not handsome; you are handsome, but that'd just be weird, right?" The blush on her face intensified as she talked, both heading off to somewhere.
Izuku had watched the encounter between the two before a growling noise emitted from his stomach. He blushed unnoticeably and hopefully no one had heard it. He decided to find the cafeteria and not go into initiation on an empty stomach.
(7:04 AM 1:26:13 till exam)
Izuku quickly finished and wanted nothing more than just to find someone he knew and dear prey hoped that someone he knew was in the weapon lockers. People were already filing about grabbing their weapons as he looked around and spotted Ruby and Yang with her back turned to him. He was walking towards her when a hand fell on his shoulder.
Izuku turned and saw it was the tall guy with glasses again. Now that he was closer Izuku got a much better look at him.
"I see what you're up to, you're planning on measuring that girls concentration, aren't you?" The man asked, his questioning piercing eyes boring into Izuku's.
Izuku stammered with his hands waving feverishly in front of him. "W-w-what?! N-no I wasn't, I swear! T-t-they just gave me a spot to sleep last night; s-so I just wanted to thank them for being kind! I-i-I'm not very good at socializing so I thought it was the right thing to do."
The man continued his look a moment more before accepting the other one's explanation. The boy seemed harmless enough he surmised. "I see." He bowed suddenly. "Forgive me for jumping to conclusions." He stood back up and moved his hands frantically and robotically as he said "I just don't want any disturbances to ruin someone's chances today. The acceptance rate is low as it is without them."
Izuku seemed to understand, this man wasn't bad or singling him out, he was just really serious about this; that something Izuku can respect.
Izuku rubbed his neck awkwardly now. "Y-y-yea, I know what you mean. I-I-I'm Izuku by the way. Izuku Midoriya." He raised his hand out.
The man took the hand with a firm grip and shook it. "It is nice to make your acquaintance Izuku. I am Tenya Iida of Soumei Academy in Atlas. I hope to make it into this school with you." They let their hands drop to their sides. "Well Izuku, I will see you later." He then walked away.
"I know! We'll have some sort of signal! Like a distress signal! A secret signal so we can find each other in the forest! Can you imitate a sloth?" Asked the bubbly girl from before.
"Nora?" Ren she had been talking to all morning finally the icing on the cake there was those two , the man spoke up, Izuku honestly thought he was mute for a moment there.
Nora stopped what she was doing, looking at the man, to hear what he had to say.
"Yes, Ren?" Nora replied.
Ren sheats his weapons in his sleeves "I don't think sloths make a lot of noise".
'They honestly sound like a baby making a random noise.' Izuku thought.
Nora thinks about this for a moment "That's why it's perfect! No one will suspect we're working together!"
Ren smiles and shuts his locker "Come on Nora, let's go"
"Not 'together-together...'" Nora saind and giggled escaped her lips.
When Izuku went to his locker to retrieve his weapons he heard a familiar voices call out his name. Ones that he actually needed to hear. Or didn't, depends on his perspective.
"Hey guys!" He called out walking to them.
"Hi Izuku." Ruby waved.
"Hey there you are Greenie! " Yang greeted as she ran up and placed him in a headlock. "Me and Ruby woke have you been this morning?" Yang asked
"I-I-I was getting ready!" Izuku managed to stammer out after slipping out of her grip. I-I-I tend to wake up early from habit to get everything done a-a-a-and you just looked so p-peaceful and I didn't want to…"
"Woah, woah, woah. Slow down Greenie. Don't wanna give all the answers at Mach Speed now, do we? " Yang said, attempting a pun to cheer the freckled boy up. What surprised her was that she heard a small, stifled chuckle from Izuku when she said it.'.No way! Does he like my jokes?! I have to make sure!' Yang thought to herself.
"I mean, even a Flash of Light takes Time to Travel." Izuku's chuckles were louder that time. 'Oh my gods He likes my jokes!' Yang thought
"You actually like my puns?!" Yang yelled in surprise, though it was more than a little forced at that point, since she'd basically provided herself with all the evidence she needed to answer her own question. And his reaction was perfect.
"O-o-of course I do! P-people say that I have a bad sense of humor-" Izuku said
"What!? whoever said that they just don't appreciate the genius that goes into the puns some people make!" Yang put her arm around Izuku's shoulder, causing him to flinch, though she didn't seem to notice. "Thanks for appreciating my puns, Greenie. Not a lot of people do that."
"Y-you're welcome." Izuku said before hearing a familiar red reaper suddenly gasped and yelled, "OH MY GOD,THERE ARE TWO OF THEM
Izuku decided to ask the obvious question of "Two what?" To which Ruby responded, "PEOPLE I KNOW WITH HORRIBLE SENSES OF HUMOR! AND ONE OF THEM'S MY NEWEST FRIEND!"
"So? Just because we have horrible senses of humor doesn't mean we're bad people, Rubes." Yang calmly replied. Ruby began a retort before realizing the futility of such a statement, saying, "You have a point. But no more of those gods awful puns! Please!"
"That'll never happen and you know it," Yang said with a Cheshire grin on her face.
Ruby gave a chuckle before saying, "I know. Just an old habit."
"You seem much happier this morning." Izuku pointed out, seeing as Ruby's demeanor was much happier and energetic than she had been the previous day.
"Yep! No more awkward small talk or getting to know your stuff. Today, I'm gonna let my sweetheart do the talking." Ruby then rubbed her face against the side of her weapon affectionately and let out a small cooing sound.
Yang became a big sister on Ruby. "You're not gonna be the only one at Initiation, Ruby. You need to branch out and meet more people if you want to mature at all."
"Ugh, you sound like dad." She then put her pride and joy in its holster and continued, "First of all, what does meeting people have to do with fighting Grimm? And secondly, I don't need other people to help me grow up. I drink milk." She crossed her arms over her chest as she proudly stated that last part.
Unknown to theme Shoto overhearing Ruby talking about it. 'Is milk a key requirement to being an adult? Maybe I should ask Fuyumi…' Shoto thought to himself.
"Well a lot actually I'm a little bit with Yang on this but not in the same sense." Both girls turned to Izuku, wishing for him to elaborate his point, although Yang's casualness caused him to blush ever so slightly, just a tad below noticeable. Izuku decided to ignore the strange feeling and began to explain what he meant. "Knowing someone's personality type and what plans they're more likely to get along with can lead to more strategic variety on the battlefield, and knowing their flaws can better help strategize how to make up for them. In short, if you know your team inside and out, you'll be able to come up with a plan for almost any situation on the spot!"
The two looked at Izuku with blank expressions for five straight seconds before Yang put her arm over Izuku's shoulder one more time and said. "How did we not find this guy soner."
'Probably because I went to Lantern Academy and guys went to Signal academy' Izuku thought.
"Well you got us here even if we're not on the same team!" Yang said
"Okay, so there are strategic advantages, but what you just described could take years. Can't i just be on one of your guys' teams?"
"M-maybe you should be on someone else's team, Ru-" Yang said as she began to stroke her golden mane of hair, more than likely a nervous habit.
"My dearest sister Yang, are you implying that you do not wish to be on the same team as me?" Ruby asked, staring at Yang with a glare that would've made Toshinor shiver with nervousness.
"I'm gonna back up now." Izuku said as he got out from between the two.
"W-WHAT?! No, no, no I didn't mean it like that. I just thought it might help you break out of your shell a little bit." Yang said, desperate to save herself from this.
"WHAAAAAAAT?! I don't need to break out any shell, that is just…"
"Ridiculous! I couldn't have put my gear in locker 636. I would have remembered having to count that high." Jaune walked by, not noticing the sister's problem.
"I think it's that way." Izuku pointed to his right. He wanted to help someone out as an excuse to get away before the girls got in another miniature brawl like last night.
"Thank you so much you're a lifesaver!" Jaune thanked him before speeding over to find his locker with a nervous Izuku on his heels.
"No problem"
They found his locker and he took out his sword and shield as he was already wearing his armor.
"So Jaune we're supposed to get partners today so I was wondering if you wan-…" Izuku looked to see Jaune looking behind him.
Izuku turned and saw Weiss talking to someone with red hair on the other side of her.
Jaune then walked towards where the girls were talking. He then did the sensible thing and entered with some pick up line, "You know what else is great? Me. Jaune Arc. Nice to meet you."
"You again?" Weiss spat out in annoyance.
The red head said, "Nice to meet you, Jaune!" in the cheeriest voice she could muster. Unfortunately for her, Jaune simply pushed her aside to try and fail to convince Weiss to be on his team.
Izuku then just turned around and checked up on his weapons for any problems while his friend kept getting rejected. Izuku looked down to see that one of his buttons have fallen off he quickly goes to pick it up as object being hurled in his direction. Izuku gets his button back on looked up to see Jaune by his hood, which was being skewered by a red and gold javelin.
"Jaune! what happened Are you okay?" Izuku ran to his friend and pulled the javelin out, letting Jaune fall on the ground.
"I'm sorry." Some girl called out behind him.
He turned to the direction it was thrown ready to defend his friend, but he was surprised it was the red-head from earlier. She wore her hair in a waist-length ponytail, curled slightly into a loose ringlet, and had vivid green eyes. She also wore light green eyeshadow around the far upper corners of her eyes, and was actually taller and quite muscular compared to most of the other girls Izuku had seen; and while Yang was very lean, her muscles weren't nearly as pronounced as the red heads. Her top consisted of two layers. The top layer was a light-brown, strapless top split divided vertically with some bronze patterns. It was likely quite stiff, maintaining its shape without support; and this layer also had riveting or small, round embroidery on the sides, indicating heavy stitching. The bottom layer was a low bronze V-neck. She also wore an elastic, black, A-line mini skirt and brown opera-length gloves on both arms. She wore a red ankle-length drapery that wrapped around her skirt. There was a small circular bronze plate by her right hip opposite two pouches with both connected to a belt. The plate bore a red shield and spear emblem. She wore a bronze circlet headpiece that could be seen above her ear and under her bangs, and a pair of small, green, teardrop-shaped emeralds hung from her circlet on thin chains. She also sported a large bronze gorget around her neck and a bronze bracelet on the upper half of her left arm. She also had elaborate bronze greaves that started below her mid-thigh, continuing downwards into her boots and a pair of cuisses that begin mid-thigh and end slightly above her knees. She donned a bronze bracer on top of the sleeve on her left arm and her high-heeled boots were brown with bronze trim, matching her skirt and sleeves, and reached up to her mid-calf.
"Holy crap. You're Pyrrha Nikos. You're on the front of Pumpkin Pete's cereal for winning the Mistral regional tournament five years in a row." Izuku went from defensive to full out fanboy in one second flat.
"That cereal isn't very good for you." She replied nervously. Izuku saw he was still holding her weapon before holding it out. "H-here you go." She took it explaining that Jaune was getting a little too flirty with Weiss.
Weiss walked away as fast as she possibly could, glad to get out there if her speed was anything to go by.
Then the loudspeaker sounded, "All first-year students, report to Beacon Cliff for Initiation. Again-"
Yang and Ruby walked up to him and Jaune, who was still on the floor. Yang, deciding that she was in a teasing mood, asked Jaune, "Having' some trouble there, Lady-killer?"
"I don't get it. My dad said that all women look for confidence. Where did I go wrong?" He asked.
"I have nothing about relationship advice, Jaune." Izuku answered, truly not knowing a lot about relationships.
"I don't think Snow Angel was the best place to start." Yang added.
"Come on guys. Let's get to the cliff." Ruby said as she left the room, the others trailing behind her.
"Stupid Deku." Izuku flinches slightly as he turns around and sees Kacchan approaching from behind, a sour look on his face wearing the same Hunter's outfit he'd worn the day before, along with a pair of green gauntlets, with his hands tucked in his pockets. "Get out of my way before I set you on fire."
Upon this threat Izuku's became more fearful, stepping to the side and waving his hands in defense.
"O-Oh u-uh h-hey good m-morning! L-Let's j-just both do our best out there, o-ok Kacchan?" Katsuki scoffed, simply walking past without giving a second look at Izuku, though the green successor thought he heard Katsuki mumble something about "Auraless loser". Despite this, Izuku was glad that this was the type of treatment he'd received from Katsuki for the past ten months, as it was small fry compared to the treatment he'd been given before the Grimm attack
"A-A-Anyway-"
"It's okay. I get the picture." Yang seems a bit sour as she looks over her shoulder to watch Kacchan walk off, Ruby meanwhile having stared ahead as she seemed curious about something.
"Kacchan? Seems like a pretty weird name." The question Izuku snaps out of your own Kacchan-induced panic as you shake your head.
"Oh, it's not his name either... his name's Katsuki Bakugo and, w-well, I just call him Kacchan." At this both sisters seem to curiously tilt their heads to the side.
"... Seems a little weird to give your bully a funny nickname..." Ruby muttered to herself as Yang snerked slightly, clearly finding it a bit amusing.
"W-Well you see.. Kacchan and I used to be friends, but..."
But then he decided he was going to be a Huntsman like you did and his parents manifested his Aura. Meanwhile, you and everyone else found out he was... Auraless. It seems like such a weird reason why your friendship fell apart; one day Kacchan, while boisterous and very much the leader as always, was fine having you be counted as one of his friends. Next thing you knew you two came back from a hike through the woods around Vela well, you just weren't friends anymore.
"But... I dunno. Maybe he changed or... I dunno." A bit of a lie but one in service to keeping Toshinori's secret. "Point is that somewhere along the way, we just stopped being friends and he..."
"Decided to be a bully instead." Yang folded her arms slightly as she frowned, a similar frown found on Ruby's face as she looked up to meet your eyes.
"So why do you keep calling him by his nickname then? I mean, I get that you used to be friends but..."
... Honestly, he never given it much thought. If he really had to sit down and give a solid answer, in the end, Kacchan is still one of the coolest people Izuku know. He's driven and strong and his own semblance, Izuku think, is really, really cool. While Toshinori stands, and always stood, at the pinnacle of what he think a Huntsmen should be and how they should act, there was always aspects of Kacchan's drive and self-confidence that he admired, even as he relentlessly bullied him for being .Auraless Maybe that was why Izuku still called him by that old nickname or... or maybe he still wanted to be his friend. It was hard to say...
So instead of giving a solid answer Izuku just kind of chuckled and scratched at his mop of messy green hair, a wistful expression on his face.
"I dunno... maybe... maybe I-I'm a bit sentimental. He was one of my only friends and..." Izuku really don't want to sound lame by admitting that he basically had no friends after Kacchan decided to turn on him.
"I'm still not sure I understand but, if you say so." Ruby responds with a slight shrug of her shoulders, her sister just nodding slowly as she scratches at her chin a bit. That's alright. He barely understand it himself; Izuku wouldn't readily expect others to get the very... odd dynamic Izuku and his oldest friend have.
Yang smiled at Izuku "Soooo... What can you do? Greenie I mean what are your skills?"
"I want my hard work to show off today but You'll find out during the initiation" Izuku said with a small confident smile.
"Oh I bet I will," Yang said coolly with a look in her eyes that made Izuku blush.
Initiation Day, 8:00 A.M., Beacon Cliff
So far, the Initiation had not been what Izuku had expected. All of the initiates had lined themselves up along Beacon Cliff, overlooking the Emerald Forest. Each student stood on top of a grey square platform marked by the Beacon Insignia, stretching down as far as the eye could see.
Izuku was at the far right end of the line, with those next to him, from closest to furthest, being Shoto, Jaune, Ruby, and Yang. Further down the line between various unknown students stood Katsuki, Weiss, Pyrrha, Tenya, and Blake Additionally, Izuku couldn't help but be distracted by the noises of Nora and Ren, with the former talking non-stop.
In front of the students stood a variety of people, all of whom were Beacon Staff members, each with a large Scroll Tablet, which Izuku assumed was for the purpose of evaluating the Applicants. Ozpin stood a short distance towards the back, with Goodwitch standing beside him. Towards the front of the group of teachers stood…
"WHAT'S UP BEACON ACADEMY APPLICANTS? THANKS FOR TUNING INTO ME, YOUR POTENTIAL FUTURE TEACHER! LET'S HEAR SOME NOISE!" Unfortunately, the Pro Huntsmen's cheers were met with a deafening silence.
He was a tall, slender man with long blonde hair spiked upwards in a huge tuft behind his head, and a small mustache. His eyes had concentric greenish-yellow pupils. and a large smile was on his face. His wardrobe consisted of a black jacket with a very tall collar, upturned and complete with studs, and matching black pants and knee-high boots. He sported tan shoulder pads and a red belt and elbow pads, all studded, and black fingerless gloves, and a multi-directional speaker obscuring his neck. Lastly, he had a pair of headphones with the word "HAGE" written on the headband and a pair of orange-tinted sunglasses.
"NERVES MAKING' YA MELLOW HUH? THAT'S COOL WITH ME. I'M HERE TO TELL YOU KIDS HOW THIS EXAM'S GONNA GO DOWN. ARE YOU READY!?" Again, the Pro received no response.
"Oh my gods, that's Hizashi Yamada! I've listened to his weekly radio show so many times!" Izuku had his hands held to his face in awe as he mumbled, earning strange glances from his friends next to him.
Ruby shrugged, "Well, I guess this is what happens when you go to a school with Hunters for teachers."
"HERE'S HOW THIS INITIATION WILL GO DOWN! IN CASE YOU'VE SOMEHOW MISSED IT, THAT RIGHT THERE'S THE EMERALD FOREST. YOUR TASK IS SIMPLE: GO INTO THE FOREST, MAKE YOUR WAY TO AN ABANDONED TEMPLE AT THE FOREST'S NORTHERN END, RETRIEVE A RELIC FROM IT, THEN MAKE YOUR WAY TO AN EVACUATION SITE ON THE TOP OF CLIFF JUST WEST OF THE TEMPLE. DO ALL THAT BY 8:00 P.M. TODAY, AND YOU'LL BECOME A STUDENT HERE AT THE ACADEMY!"
'They expect us to do all of that?' Izuku thought.
"IF YOU'RE WONDERING ABOUT THE GRIMM IN THE FOREST, DON'T WORRY LISTENERS. THE BEACON STAFF HAS SPENT THE PAST SEVERAL DAYS CLEARING OUT THE MAJOR GRIMM IN THE FOREST TO ENSURE YOU WON'T ENCOUNTER ANYTHING ABOVE YOUR GUY'S LEVEL. THE WORST YOU'LL FIND MIGHT BE A YOUNG KING TAIJITU." This caused Izuku, Jaune, and some of the other students to give a sigh of relief, while Katsuki was slightly disappointed.
"NOW YOU ALL MAY BE WONDERING, 'WHAT ABOUT PICKING TEAMS?' YOU LISTENERS WHO PASS THE EXAM WILL RECEIVE YOUR TEAMS TODAY!" This caused Ruby to give out a silent cry, knowing she would be unable to avoid the formation of teams, while Katsuki grumbled inaudibly to himself.
"OBVIOUSLY BEING PAIRED WITH A GOOD TEAM IS IMPORTANT, AS WORKING WITH THOSE YOU CAN'T GET ALONG WITH JUST WON'T CUT IT OUT IN THE FIELD. BUT HERE AT BEACON ACADEMY, WE DO THINGS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENTLY. THEREFORE, THE FIRST PERSON YOU MADE EYE WITH WILL BE YOUR PARTNER FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS!"
The sound of glass shattering went off in Ruby and Izuku's heads. "WHAT?!" Ruby and Izuku screamed.
"WHEN YOU GET YOUR PARTNER, SIMPLY GET YOUR RELIC OUT TO PASS. YOU WILL ONLY PASS IF BOTH OF YOU MAKE IT OUT OF THE FOREST TOGETHER. BEFORE WE BEGIN, WOULD YOU LIKE TO ADD IN ANYTHING PROFESSOR OZPIN?"
"No, I'm quite alright, Hizashi. Are there any questions?"
"Yeah, um, sir?" Jaune asked as he raised his hand.
"Good! Now, take your positions." At Ozpin's cue, everyone is on the cliff then takes crouching, preparing weapons, Ren simply holds his bladed oozies out in front of him while Tenya is next to him taking a sumo puts her hands in the fort of her in a boxing stance though not before putting on a pair of kickass aviator sunglass, and Ruby simply kept her right hand hovering over her scythe was held. Izuku had Cloud Avalache at the ready, his hands at a slightly lower angle than Yang's and suppressing any last minute nerves. Izuku looked around and followed suit, still slightly confused. Jaune, however, continued to raise his hand.
"Uh, sir? I've got, um... a question." As Jaune asked, a metallic clunk was heard from the far left side of the cliff. Izuku turned to see a student flying in the air, only to be followed by several other students, each being launched from the platform below them. Izuku gulped but did his best to maintain his composure, staring down at his feet with a look of nervous determination.
"So, this landing... strategy thing... Uh, wha-what is it? You're, like, dropping us off or something?" At this question, Hizashi had to stifle a small laugh, while another teacher with long black hair and a scarf simply sighed and shook his head.
"No. You will be falling." Ozpin deadpanned.
"Oh, uh, I see... So, like, did you hand out parachutes for us?" Jaune asked, the sound of launching students still echoing in the background.
Nora was then launched her face and voice full of glee. "No. You will be using your own landing strategy." Just before Ren was launched, Tenya after soon Izuku could've sworn Yang winked at him and Ruby just before she launched, making him blush ever so just launched right after
"Uh-huh... yeah, o-ok."
"So, um, what exactly is a landing strategyYYYYYYYYYYYYY-" Jaune was launched before he could finish his question. Now only Izuku remained on the cliff.
Ozpin held the slightest smirk as he told Izuku, "Toshinori wishes you luck."
"AAAHHHHHHHHH!" Was the closest thing to a coherent thought he had as he was flung into the air. The force of the breeze against his face was enormous, his skin felt like it was about to be ripped off the rest of his body. Izuku flailed wildly before he eventually became stable as he reached the height of his arc..
"I love my job." He said in bliss of his drink.
sorry that this was late my wifi stop working but all for now see you next Saturday
