Chapter 3
Someday, Maybe?
Steph POV:
Bobby had worked the shit out of us this morning. I was sore as hell. I took the elevator up to seven to get out of my sweaty clothes and get a shower. I walked inside and flicked on the foyer light like normal. I walked into the bedroom and then into the bathroom. I stripped of my clothes and stepped into the shower turning it on. I washed my hair quickly. I picked up the bottle of Bulgari, looks like Ella had replaced the almost empty one. I brought it up to my nose and took a whiff.
It felt like Ranger was right next to me. I could remember all the times he held me close after an accident, or my car's exploding. I sighed and started to wash the sweat of my body. After using a oversized fluffy towel I walked into the dressing room. Ella had been leaving fresh uniforms in the closet for me. I changed into one quickly and took care of my hair using the products under the sink. After I cleaned up and tossed everything into the hamper, I walked through the apartment turning off the lights. I closed the door behind me and took the stairs to five.
I took my seat at my cubicle and picked up the first file that needed a search ran. While that was in the programs I checked my email. Tank had sent me the contract for a new client. He wanted me to review the changes to the contract that the client had requested. Today was going to be a long day.
It was quitting time. I sat at my desk waiting for Tank to finish working. I was done for the day and when I went to see if Tank was he told me he at least another hour of work. When I asked him if he needed help he waved me off.
So now I sat at my desk with my feet kicked up watching the few Merrymen that were left in the office. I didn't hear the footsteps behind me but I nearly jumped out of my chair when a hand touched my shoulder.
"Holy shit, you scared me." I said turning to look at the owner of the hand. Rage wore a small smile.
"Bomber, Ram mentioned to me that you need help with in the gun range, with your weapons." He said. I nodded skeptical. "Tank is still working. We have time."
"Alright." I said. I took his offered hand and stood.
"Your weapon?" He asked. I unlocked my desk drawer and pulled out my gun and my holster. I snapped it onto my hip.
I shut off my computer and we walked to the stairwell and took them to the garage. Rage pulled me into the Armory instead of the gun range. I turned with my hand resting on my gun. Hector and Rage stood next to each other. "Estephana." Hector said waving me over.
I stepped forward cautiously. I knew Hector would never hurt me but I was still working on my trust with Rage. I didn't know him but I trusted him. I had to make sure though that I could. "Ranger. Estephana he is here." He said.
Hector opened a computer the rest of the way. Ranger was on the screen. "Babe." He said. I sat in the chair Hector pulled up.
"Ranger." I said. "Are you allowed to do this?"
"No." He said with a slight smirk. "I needed to see you babe."
Rage and Hector stepped outside and Ranger looked at me. "How're you doing babe? Hector told me what happened with Morelli." He said.
"I'm good. I lost about 180 pounds of baggage." I said. He nodded.
"He also told me you took a job at Rangeman."
"I did." I said sitting up slightly straighter. "I test in about three weeks to see if I'm fit for field work."
"Does that mean you've been working out and working with your gun?" He asked.
I nodded. "My training partner is Rage." I said.
"I'm happy to hear that's working out. Rage is a good guy, you can trust him." He said his face telling me to trust Rage because he knew he could count on him.
"Okay. When are you going to be home?"
"I don't know babe." He said. "Soon hopefully. We should be able to wrap this up soon. Probably about a month."
I nodded. "Hopefully by then I'll be a field certified employee of Rangeman."
"I still can't believe I missed you working out in the gym and working in the gun range." He said. I rolled my eyes.
"And I miss your sense of humor." I said. He grinned his 100 watt smile at me.
"When I get home we're going to have to go out in the field together." He said.
"Only if I pass the test."
"I have faith in you. I'm proud of you babe." He said. I blushed.
"Ranger." I said. "I wanted to tell you I'm sorry for the way I've treated you over the past couple of years. I've been horrible. I've always considered you my best friend and I've taken advantage of you."
"No, babe you haven't." He said. "We'll have to table this discussion until I get home, but you have never taken advantage of me babe."
"Okay." I nodded.
"I've got to go babe but I'll try and call again." He said.
He hung up and I sat back in my chair. I let out the breath I had been holding. He was okay and he wasn't angry that I was working for Rangeman. If anything he seemed to be happy. He was happy Rage was my training partner. Those are three wins in my book. I stood and opened the door. Hector and Rage walked back in. I hugged Hector and kissed his tear drops.
"Gracias." I said.
"Su bienvenida hermanita." He said.
I stepped back and pulled Rage into a hug. He hesitated but wrapped his arms around me. "Thank you." I said pulling back.
"Your welcome." He said. I looked down embarrassed. I brushed my sweaty hands across my cargos.
I ducked out of the room and jogged up the stairs. I met Tank as he came out of his office. "Ready to go?" I asked him. He nodded locking his door. He had a computer bag slung over his shoulder. No doubt it had files in it along with his laptop.
We walked down the stairs and got into the hummer. As Tank drove I tapped my foot. He raised an eye brow looking at me.
"What's bothering you Bomber?" He asked.
"The test." I said. "What if I don't pass it?"
"You will, its three weeks away and you've been training for this." He said. I nodded biting my lip.
"I know."
"Don't doubt yourself Bomber. I've seen the reports your doing great." He said.
He pulled into his driveway and used a fob to open the gate. We drove in and waited as it closed behind us. Once we got to the house he parked the hummer in the driveway in front of the garage. He let us inside and Applepuff came running and intertwined between our legs as he turned off the alarm and I hung up my jacket. I bent down to pick her up. Suzie lounged on the couch. I smiled. I had gotten used to coming home here.
I walked into the kitchen and set Applepuff down as I pulled the cat food from the cabinet and walked to the end of the bar to fill up the two bowls, causing Suzie to come running. I opened the fridge and grabbed two beers bringing one over to Tank who had kicked off his shoes and sat on the couch. He was in the process of opening his laptop. He put his feet up on the coffee table and balanced his computer on his legs. I sat down in the corner of the sectional and handed him one of the beers.
"You mind?" I asked him picking up the remote.
"Go ahead. I need background noise." He said.
"I guess that's why your office is right on top of the control room." I said. He nodded.
"That's exactly why." He said.
I turned on the TV and flipped threw the channels, settling onto some movie with Mark Wahlberg. After a while I glanced at Tank to see him sitting with his brow furrowed and fingers poised above the keyboard. "You good big guy?" I asked him. "Need help."
"Here, you take a look." He said handing me the computer.
"These are specs for a house." I said. He nodded.
"This is the house of one of our clients. They've got two twin girls. Their boyfriends are sneaking in. We can't figure out how."
"Their not getting caught by camera's or sensors?" I asked. He nodded.
I glanced over the plans. "Can I see this house in person?"
"Tommorow." He said. I nodded.
"I've got an idea of how they're doing it." I said biting my lip. He raised an eyebrow. I shook my head.
"Alright." He said. "I'll call them in the morning."
I nodded and handed the laptop back. "Want to order takeout?" I asked.
He shot me a look. Normally we came home did a little work, cooked and then relaxed before going to bed. But I think we were both a little too preoccupied to cook.
"Takeout menus are in the drawer next to the fridge." He said. I grinned and got up to get the menus.
Ranger POV:
I sat back after getting off the call with my Babe. I had to smile. I was so glad she decided to get training and she was working with Tank. I stood and walked out into the main strategy room. A few of the men sat out where working.
"Boss, I think we found a way to get home quicker." My second in command for this mission said.
"What is it John?" I asked.
"On sunday Santiago heads to church with his family in a caravan. On the way back the caravan split up. His family coming back to the compound and he is going to check out his storage facility. We can take him then."
I nodded. "How many men will he have with him and where is the storage facility in comparison to our exfil zone?" I asked him.
"Twenty minutes form the exfil zone and then there will be 12 men including the men from the caravan." He said. I nodded.
"Start planning." I said. "Let's get home."
Days Later
We sat in waiting. "Boss caravan is splitting. Passing check point one."
"Roger." I said.
John was next to me laying on his stomach looking through a pair of binoculars. "They're about a mile out." He said.
"Passing checkpoint two." Another man said.
I watched as moments later they passed in front of John and I. "Passing checkpoint checkpoint three." John said.
"Let's start moving towards the target." I said.
Ten minutes later we were settled into position outside of the warehouse. Santiago was inside.
"Are we a go boss?" John asked.
"We're a go." I said. We moved in formation towards the warehouse. There were nine of us so we split between the exits.
"Go." I said into my Comm.
John opened the door and we rushed in scanning the warehouse. The first man noticed us and before he could alert everyone he was shot. The other men turned towards us as we surrounded them, they raised their guns and we started to fire. Santiago aimed his gun at me and I shot him in the shoulder, causing him to drop his I gun. I watched as two of the men cuffed him.
"More of my men are on the way." He sneered at me.
"We'll be gone before they get here." John said to him.
"They'll find me."
"Not where your going." John said grinning like a madman.
"Let's move to the Exfil." I said to the team. We moved out of the warehouse and made our way to where we had hidden two vehicles. Santiago was pushed into the first vehicle with me, John and two of our other men. We pulled out and the second car followed. We were minutes from the exfil zone when we heard the roar of an engine and a car came in behind us.
"I told you they would find us."
I nodded to John who was driving and leaned out the window. I turned and took aim on the car. We were bouncing on the road that lead to the exfil sight. As soon as I could get a good enough shot, I sent a barrage of bullets into one of the front tires causing the car to careen and roll.
"Fuck you." Santiago growled as he saw the car stop rolling and land on it's top. Two minutes later we slid to a stop as the helicopter landed.
"Lets move." I said. We moved towards the bird. Two of the men pulled Santiago with them. Most of the men moved towards the bird and made sure no one was going to emerge from the surrounding area. Santiago was pushed into the bird as the men loaded. After the last man loaded I slid in and took up position to take out any hostiles as we took off. We got lucky when we were able to take off and not confronted.
"We should be home within the next week or two." John said. I nodded.

Steph POV:
Tank pulled his company vehicle into the driveway of the clients home. He pressed the button at the gate and he was asked for his name and the reason for his visit. Once he gave it we were allowed access to the property. A man greeted us at the door.
"Tank it's nice to see you again. Who is this beautiful woman you've brought with you?"
"This is Stephanie Plum. She's a sales representative and home security expert. She's here to help solve your issue."
"Well Mrs. Plum I'm Parker Michaels." He said shaking my offered hand.
"Miss. I'm not married." He smiled.
"Well I'm surprised a lovely young girl like you hasn't been swooped up." He said.
"Many have tried and failed." I said. He chuckles.
"Let me show you my girls rooms." He said.
"Are they at school?" I asked.
He nodded. "They are."
"I would also like to see the outside of the house." I said. He nodded. He showed me the bedrooms. They were on the second floor. Rooms side by side. They were mirrors of each other. One room was teal and the other was purple.
I checked out both ensuite bathrooms, neither had windows. I walked out of the rooms and stood in the hallway. Tank raised an eyebrow. I shook my head. Michaels looked from me to Tank. "Your open to look at any rooms and ask any questions."
"What other rooms are on this level?"
"Two other bedrooms, also with in suites and a guest bathroom." He said. I walked through each of the bedrooms and walked into the guest bathroom. I opened the window and looked down. There was a short sloping roof. I noted that mentally before I walked outside. Michaels and Tank followed me. I walked around the side of the house.
"Tank?"
"Yeah Bomber?" He said.
"Can you hold this?" I asked him. He took my phone and tablet.
"Your daughters boyfriends, how tall are they? Are they athletic?"
"Yes. Both are on the track team, football team, baseball team and they weight lift." He said. I nodded. I backed up a few feet to look before I made my decision. I ran and jumped, pulling myself onto the roof. I stood and walked across the slight slope to the guest bathroom. I glanced down to see both Tank's and Michaels's mouths open.
"Secure this window, put a motion detector above this window. Wire it into the system so that every time its triggered you get an alert and the alarm goes off. Make sure it's one that squeals so it scares the shit out of these teenagers." I said as I slid off the roof.
"Where did you find her?" Michaels asked Tank.
"Ranger did. She used to a bounty hunter." Tank said. Michaels nodded.
"Is there where you learned the skills you just used?" He asked turning to me.
"No, I used to sneak out as a kid and I'm really good at getting away from any of my body guards." I said smiling. Tank shook his head and Michaels grinned.
So Ranger might be getting home sooner rather than later, wonder how Steph will take that?
Hope you enjoyed this chapter! I'll update again soon.
