Chapter 1

Hermione was content, it was the eve of her 21st birthday and she was having dinner at the Burrow with her boyfriend and his family and thinking back to the last two years.
The war ended two years ago and everything was going well, Hermione and Ron were finally a couple and Harry and Ginny had married the past summer.

After defeating Voldemort and assuring justice for the remaining Death Eaters, Harry, Ron and Hermione had travelled to Australia to look for her parents.
They found their address in Canberra thanks to the help of the Australian Ministry of Magic, and quickly made their way to the house in the suburbs.
Hermione was very nervous, she knew her parents would not be happy to find out they missed more than a year in the life of their daughter and over the loss of their practice in England.
When she rang the bell she was not expecting to see a little boy answering the door.
He was maybe 4 or 5 years old, with light brown curls and beautiful grey eyes.
He looked at her with a curious expression and asked: "Who are you? Are you here for the funeral?

Her hearth seemed to stop in her chest but she smiled at him and answered : "No, i am here looking for Wendell and Monica Wilkins, do you know them?"
"Yes, they is my mam and dad, but dad is with the angels now and we are saying goodbye"
She felt her shoulders sag and her eyes fill with tears when she saw her mother coming to the door.
She was dressed in black and she looked exhausted, but there was obvious affection when her eyes fell on the young boy.
"David what are you doing answering the door alone? We told you many times that it is not safe."
"Sorry mummy, i was only trying to help you"
"i know honey, and i really appreciate your help, today of all days, but please don't make me worry."
Turning her attention to Hermione she said: "I'm sorry, my son was not supposed to answer the door alone, may i help you? Are you here for the funeral? I don't think i know you..."
"I am sorry to disturb you Mrs Wilkinks, i am here on holiday with my friends" and she pointed to Harry and Ron who were waiting by the gate "and when my Aunt Sarah heard i was coming to Canberra she asked me to pay her respect. I believe she was your nurse in the london office, Sarah Ballings."
She was now happy that she didn't delete all their memories, she couldn't think of another excuse.
"Sarah? Of course i remember her, she was a jewel, thank her for me. I would invite you in, but my husband died three days ago and we are having his funeral now. If you are staying in Canberra why don't you come back in a couple of days and we can talk a little"
"I will thank you, and my most honest condolences to you and your... son?"
"Yes, this is our David, we adopted him six months ago and he filled our days with joy" she said hugging David.
"i will come back to pay my respect in a couple of days Mrs Wilkins and i wish you strength in these difficult days"
"Thank you..."
"Hermione, my name is Hermione Granger"
"What a beautiful name, i always loved Shakespeare inspired names"
"My mother did too, i will see you in a couple of day Mrs Wilkins, and David, Goodbye"
And she left quickly to hide her tears.

Harry and Ron understood immediately that something was wrong, Ron hugged Hermione when she said "My dad is dead"
Harry took her hand and together the boys led her to the apparition point and then to their hotel suite.
She felt numb, she couldn't understand, she sent her parents away without their memories of her to protect them, and now her father was dead.

Harry gave her a hug and left her and Ron together in their room saying he was going to get something to eat.
Ron led her to the bed and left her sitting there while he went into the bathroom.
She heard the water and running and Ron rummaging in the cabinet.
Ron came back and sat next to her on the bad taking her hand "the bathtub is filling up, why don't you go take a bath and try to relax a little."
"Thank you Ron, i really appreciate your help" she said kissing his cheek.
"of course Mione, you know i would do anything for you, and you were there when Fred died, you helped me a lot, i only hope i can do something to help a little."
He hugged her tight and kissed her lips for the first time since the battle of Hogwarts.
"maybe this is not the best moment but you know i care for you, i like you a lot Mione, will you be my girlfriend?"
Hermione took a step back and stared at him in surprise "Really Ron, you are asking me to be your girlfriend now? After all this time waiting for you, do you really think this is the best moment to make a pass?"
She was starting to get angry, but took a deep breath and said "i am going to take a bath, you are right, i need to relax a little. I am going to try to think about your question, but this is really not the best time for me to consider romance."
Ron's ear tips were starting to redden, a sure sign he was getting frustrated and ready to blow "i was only trying to make you feel better, there is no need to be all prissy and bit my head off, bloody hell Mione, you are never going to get a man with that attitude of yours..."
"Let me stop you there before you put your foot even deeper in your mouth. I don't have the energy to argue with you tonight, i an going to take that bath now, thank you."
After the bath she went to the living room of their suite, where Harry was waiting with a veritable spread.
"i am sorry Harry, i am not really hungry"
"Don't worry Mione, i can always put a stasis spell on the food. How are you? I don't know what to do to make it better..."
She hugged him and took comfort from his familiar scent of broom polish and aftershave.
"just be there for me Harry, that is all i need, hopefully in a couple of days i can get some answers and my mother back, and apparently a little brother!"
"hey i thought i was your brother" he joked.
"And you are Harry, you are the brother of my hearth"
"just as you are my sister, you were always there for me, always, even when Ron left, you stayed"
"of course i stayed, i couldn't leave you alone, you would have been dead in two days..."
she laughed.
"yeah, that's probably true..."he said.
"Where is Ron, by the way?" asked Hermione.
"he left in a huff half an hour ago, did you argue again?"
"he kissed me and asked me to be his girlfriend" she answered, and watched him closely to see his reaction.
Harry seemed relieved and then surprised and crestfallen, he frowned "now? He asked you now? He really has the emotional range of a teaspoon, i am sorry Mione, you know he means well, he just doesn't think before talking"
"i know Harry, but really, this is a rotten time for me, i can't think about romance until i get answers"
"i understand Mione, he will too, once he thinks about it and loses some steam"
"i hope so. I liked him for so long, i just need some time for me now."
Harry hugged her again and then made her a cup of tea with a drop of calming draught in it.
"take this to your room and try to sleep a bit, tomorrow we will try to find some informations about your father and your brother."
'Thank you Harry, i love you, goodnight"
She went to bed after drinking her calming tea and fell asleep to memories of her father.

Ron came back the day after and apologized to Hermione, though he never said where he went when he left.
It was now a Thursday and Hermione decided to wait until Saturday before going to see her mother and restore her memories.
She tried to keep her mind busy studying for the coming NEWT year, she had decided to go back to Hogwarts, even though the boys were going straight to Auror training, she didn't feel right not finishing her education.
She was also looking forward to a year without drama and life threatening adventures.
Ron and Harry took Kingsley's offer to sit for exams at the end of the summer, luckily they only needed four NEWTs each to start auror training.
Hermione had already made study schedule for the boys, and they were kind of following them, hoping to pass with good marks without too much effort.
The Minister had already said that every student above OWL level who fought in the battle of Hogwarts, was going to automatically receive a passing mark in the defence against the Dark Arts NEWT; which made easier for Harry and Ron, and many others, to achieve the necessary marks.
They spent the next two days just studying and hanging out, and finally it was Saturday.
