Everything I Want
Summary: AH/AU When a young Elena Gilbert has no other choice she takes a job as a move-in nanny for her snobby rich sister Katherine. What happens when she meets Katherine's very rich and very handsome husband Damon? No CC intended all for fun!
Chapter one
Elena Gilbert sat in her usual booth at the Mystic Grill after her shift Tuesday night. She frowned counting the tips over and over wishing the number would somehow magically change. It didn't.
The twenty-three-year-old brunette frowned a sinking feeling in her gut. She was already three days past the grace period on her rent and tips like these weren't going to help.
A major setback with her brother Jeremy had taken every cent she had a few weeks ago and she hadn't been able to make it up despite taking every shift she could at the Grill. She nodded a goodbye to her longtime friend and once upon a time ex-boyfriend Matt before leaving for the night. They stayed friends through the years, and she was grateful to him for keeping her employed, but they were slow and getting slower. Times were tough and with Jeremy gone now for who knows how long this time, she had no hope of a second income.
She walked home as she always did, she sold her car to cover rent a few months back. She was determined to somehow get through this without going to either of the two people she dreaded having to go to for help.
Instead she let herself into her tiny two-bedroom apartment. She shared it with Jeremy up until a few weeks ago when she had to drive him to rehab after he fell of the wagon. The place felt so cold without him. It reminded her of how lonely she was, and she didn't like that.
She shut off her thoughts and crossed the small white kitchenette area to the sunken in living room with a small couch and a chair and a TV they had set up on end table. It was one of the only things that survived the fire all those years ago, she bit back tears of the memory.
"Okay." She said to herself, pacing the small living area. "You're screwed here Gilbert you have no choice. You need help or you're on the streets."
Still she stared sadly at her phone it felt like giving in to them, she didn't want to let go of her anger at them. They would never understand they were both far too selfish. She went with the lesser of the two evils and finally willed herself to dial.
"Elena? This is a surprise." He answered right away.
"John." She said biting her lip, a sick feeling in her stomach it was easier to call him but she doubted he could help her.
"Is everything okay?" He asked.
"No, it's not. I...Jer got in some trouble and I had to help him out. I need some money for rent. I hate asking but, please I'll pay you back." She said in a rush.
"Elena...I really wish I could help you." His voice was quiet.
She felt her stomach drop with that and bit back the tears, it was fruitful, but she couldn't help but hope he would have come through for her, just once.
"Right thanks anyway." She started to hang up.
"I'm sorry, the shop is not doing well. Times are hard for me too; you know I would help you if I could." He exclaimed.
"Right like you helped me with Jeremy before?" She spat back.
"I had my reasons that time Elena." He said his voice hard.
"You always do don't you." She quipped.
"I don't want to get into this with you now. My stance hasn't changed you'd be in a better place now had you listened to me." He said.
"I wasn't going to turn my back on my brother!" She snapped. "I never will."
"He's your cousin not your brother." John sighed.
"Don't… don't do that John, or should I say Uncle Dad?" She hissed.
He hissed at the memory she had sarcastically called him that for months after she learned the awful truth about herself.
"Have you tried your mother?" John asked instead of replying.
"My mother is dead John." Elena said in a flat voice.
"You know that isn't what I meant." He said in a gritted voice. "Isobel have you called her? I know she will help you."
"I don't want her help." Elena said in a cold voice.
She had met Isobel 5 years ago one year after the only parents she had ever known died in a tragic car accident. It was the most difficult year she ever had, the nightmares and tears and constant sadness and feeling of dread. It almost consumed her, she only stayed strong to help her brother Jeremy. A year after they were starting to move forward, things were just starting to get better. They were finally mending a least she was when suddenly this petite and dark-haired woman shows up at her door and announces that she's her mother.
Turns out she had an affair with her Uncle John years ago as she was passing through town. She already had a two-year-old daughter and couldn't afford them both. John wasn't ready to be a dad and left town, so Isobel gave her up to her aunt and Uncle Grayson and Miranda. Elena had grown up believing they were her parents. Hearing all of it had made her feel like she lost them all over again.
Isobel was always calling and trying to bond. She constantly begged Elena to move to LA and get to know her and her sister. She somehow thought she could make up for seventeen years of neglecting her now.
Elena never had any desire to understand why she did what she did or get to know her. She left her and then tainted her real mom's memory with her damned truth and Elena refused to forgive her for that. She had been curious about the sister her mom decided to keep. She met Katherine the next day after Isobel had just showed up at her house once again with her.
Any curiosity about her sister died quickly once she was around her for more than five minutes. She was cold and rude and all she did was complain about the dirty hick town Elena lived in when she wasn't talking about herself and bragging about how she was going to move to LA and be a famous model. Other than a few phone conversations a year, and all of Katherine's ridiculous postcard pictures she sent out to everyone they didn't bother with each other.
Elena's thoughts wandered to the most recent card and she went to retrieve it from the drawer. She kept every card Katherine had sent. She tucked them away in a drawer, she for whatever reason couldn't throw them away.
In this photo they were posed near what Elena was guessing was their new pool. Her unbelievably gorgeous husband was beside her his sparkling blue eyes seemed to shine brighter in the picture then the actual pool. His raven black hair was messy and wet against his porcelain white and perfectly chiseled face. He wore a panty dropping smirk that seemed to reach those blue eyes and reach right out of the camera.
He was protectively holding their son, an adorable little boy that was the spitting image of his father all the way down to the tiny little smirk on his cute little lips. His skin was darker like Katherine's, but closer to Elena's natural olive shade then Katharine's darker tanned skin. His blue eyes were just a little lighter more of a sky blue where his dads were like the color of the ocean and his hair was just a shade or so lighter. Katherine was dressed in some gold swimsuit with crazy heels making her even taller than her husband. She had highlighted her dark brown hair and wore it wavy and loose standing in some model pose showing off her long legs.
She couldn't deny her sister was beautiful but always so obvious so overdone. They looked a lot alike anyone would peg them for sisters right away. Although Katherine was a little taller and thinner. The biggest difference was their eyes though, Katherine had dark brown nearly black eyes that extended outwards like a cat where Elena's were a light chocolate brown and wider and rounder like a doe's eyes she had been told. Judging from the pictures Katherine had some work done over the years as well, she used to have thin lips and now they were abnormally plump, and the boobs were most definitely not hers. She had noticed those in the Christmas pictures last year.
Elena wasn't overly cocky, but she liked how she looked, she was what they would call a natural beauty. She thought her older sister was gorgeous in the LA sexy model way, but it would never be her. Elena was petite like Isobel with a slender body and soft curves, a modest sized chest that was perky and definitely deemed plenty of male attention on the rare occasion she showed them off, and a natural pretty face that she didn't need to overdo with much makeup.
She looked at the large mansion behind Katherine, from what she understood from Isobel her husband ran some big law firm or something. The money Elena desperately needed for rent was probably something Katherine would spend in an hour.
There was no way she could ask her though…
"It would be easier than Isobel." She said out loud attempting to convince herself. "Besides, they have so much money why would she even care?"
But, how could she? How could she go to the self-superior, self-centered, chosen one and succumb to asking her of all people for help.
She looked at the picture again sadly, how ironic that Isobel claims she gave Elena up so she could have the better life. Looks like the chosen one got that too, she thought as a pipe above her started rattling loudly. She headed into her tiny room where her cold and empty bed waited for her.
"The perfect little family." She said as she gazed at her cute little nephew, she wished she could meet him someday. She set the picture down and tucked into her bed. Maybe Katherine would help her. If anything, it would give her something to hold over Elena's head forever. Which would suck, but rent…
"I'll sleep on it." She finally decided before she drifted off to sleep.
"Damon for the love of god, wake up and shut off that damn alarm already!"
A cold voice roughly pulled Damon Salvatore out of his peaceful dreams. He groaned and rolled over snapping off the alarm before forcing himself awake. He was the co-owner of his father's law firm he ran it with his brother Stefan, and they were currently working on a huge case. It was almost wrapped up finally, but it had been a late night at the office.
He stood and stretched his long lean and muscular body before crossing the room to the dresser fishing for clothes.
"Could you be any louder?" She growled, as she pulled the blankets over her head.
"Not my fault you were out till three am." He snapped back in an equally cold voice.
"It was work related and I have a casting call at noon Damon." She sat up brushing her messy and still curly hair from her face. Her imploring brown cat-like eyes bored into his blue ones intently. He wondered where she got the energy this early.
"You do recall that Emily's gone right?" His blue eyes widened, and he stared right back at her his lips pursed angrily that she had managed to forget once again.
"Didn't you hire another nanny?" She asked. "We had her notice for weeks Damon!"
"Why would I hire another nanny? You're not working Kat." He almost laughed, it if it didn't piss him off so much he would.
"I am modeling Damon!" She yelled her dark brown eyes flashing with anger.
When's the last time you actually booked a job then? He didn't say it he knew where that would lead so he just shook his head and let out a breath.
The fact was when he met her four years ago, she was a very promising model she had a lot of jobs at the time, but she never took it seriously. She was fun carefree and captivating. She was very beautiful in such a unique way and LA ate her up. She was tall and thin a bit too thin for his tastes, but he had overlooked it as he had a lot of things about her. She had a dark tanned complexion, dark brown catlike eyes that tended to either look very mean or very sexy and it was a thin line. When he met her, she had shoulder length wavy chestnut hair, but she had since grown it long and colored it a dozen times, but recently she went back to her natural color.
The problem with LA eating her up was that it literally ate her up and swallowed her. A taste of fame seemed to just transform her in an instant. She let it go to her head and then bam life happened, and she was pregnant. Everything had changed then and the woman that came back to the scene was still too cocky but now desperate on top of it. The magic she had then just wasn't there anymore. She wasn't that 'it' girl she was those few short years ago.
LA wasn't interested in her anymore and it wasn't because she had a kid as she liked to say. It was because she had her boobs done, her lips injected and her over tanning, hard partying and constant late nights had started weathering her face early.
"Can't you just take lunch and watch him?" She whined giving him a pout her smudged up red lips did nothing for him at the moment and he almost laughed again.
"How long is the casting call going to be? We have a huge case going on right now." Damon sighed.
"I don't know an hour." She shrugged.
"Which is at least two. I can't you're going to have to skip this one." he said.
"You're an asshole Damon. This is my career. I can't miss any of these things and you know it!" She sputtered.
"It's one casting call Katherine. You went to three parties and at least four auditions this week." He pointed out.
"You've been working extra hours on your case all week." She spat back instantly.
"We're a team; we don't have a nanny right now. We have to work together here." He groaned.
"Fix it get a nanny ASAP." She demanded.
"Kat." He sighed. "I was never a big fan of Emily being here all day with him. We can hire someone that's on call that can come when you have an appointment."
"That's not going to work they can just come up." She whined.
"It's been almost a year that you've been back to work." He refrained from putting finger quotes around work since most of it involved what she called industry parties like last night's gala.
"You have to figure out balance Katherine. I work sixty hours a week, but I still make sure I see him every day and I spend the entire weekends with him." He said. His eyes imploring, almost begging her to just work with him. For once.
"I see him every day too!" She said her eyes darkening.
"Yeah coming home or leaving." He muttered.
"That's not true! Who's the one who missed out on the prime of my career! I made my sacrifices, but I'm not going to give up. I will get my career back." She got up and stormed out of the room slamming the door behind her. He cringed hoping she didn't wake up Gavin.
He didn't bother following her to comfort her or smooth things over, he didn't have time. He grabbed his stuff and got ready He had chosen a simple pair of black slacks and a button up gray shirt. Coming his hair back and smirking happily at his reflection. Not that his wife bothered to enjoy it much, but he was proud of how well he kept his body and his good looks. He was only twenty-six and Katherine twenty-five, but somehow being a parent makes you feel older. Gavin just turned three and seemed to get faster and more mobile every day. Damon realized at one-point kids are the best cardio and quite going to the gym.
Gavin was awake and sitting on his bed when he excited the shower. He had little red spider man pajamas on and was flipping through the channels in the TV.
"Daddy!" He exclaimed his little lips twisting into a smile.
"Morning champ." Damon jumped into bed next to him and cuddled him.
"Sponge bob?" Damon groaned. "What happened to cartoons huh? You should see the shows I watched."
"Why?" Gavin asked.
"Why? Cause they were cool!" Damon said. "Way cooler than sponges. Like the road runner he was awesome."
"I like sponge bob." Gavin declared.
"Well my cartoons were cooler." Damon grinned at Gavin's furrowed brows.
"Sponge Bob is cool, dad!" Gavin exclaimed.
"Not as cool as your dad." Damon smirked.
"Is too." Gavin laughed as Damon attacked him with tickles.
"Stop daddy!" He squealed and squirmed.
"Breakfast is ready!" Katherine's shrill voice screamed up the stairs.
"Wow she actually cooked." Damon muttered under his breath.
"When is Emmy coming back?" Gavin asked his blue eyes full of confusion.
"Emmy isn't going to live here anymore buddy remember?" Damon said gently.
"Cause she got married?" Gavin recalled.
"Yes, you remember her husband Steve he brought you that truck remember?"
"Yeah he's cool." Gavin said.
"Well, "Damon smiled. "Emily thinks so too, so she's going to live with him now."
"But I want her to live here in the basement." Gavin said his lips quivering.
"I know you do, but Emily has to take care of her husband and someday her kids now." Damon said slowly.
"Who will take care of me?" Gavin asked.
"Your mommy and I will buddy, you know that." Damon scooped him up and threw him over his shoulder.
"Now to the kitchen." He declared in a booming voice Gavin started squealing and laughing again as Damon carried them down the stairs.
"What is this?" He stared at the plates on the table in dismay as he settled Gavin into his booster seat.
"Spinach soufflés." Katherine said. "I got them at that little health food market down the block. They are meatless."
"We're not eating this crap." Damon said.
"It's healthy Damon. I was reading about how bad meats can be for you. I think we should all go vegan." She said.
"You can eat whatever trendy California food you want; my son is a growing boy and he needs meat." Damon grabbed Gavin's plate and headed back into the kitchen. Dumping it in the trash before opening the fridge to put together a real breakfast.
"Tofu is good for him." Katherine spat back.
"It came out of a box." Damn gestured to the empty boxes in the garbage. "If you want to go vegan, I'm pretty sure this isn't how."
"So what if it's out of box?" She scoffed, "I think it tastes great just try it."
He watched her take a big bite and cringe slightly at the taste before chewing and swallowing. She looked down in dismay at the remaining portion of food on her plate.
"Is it now?" He smirked. "You want scrambled eggs too?"
"The way you smother nasty cheese all over them, no thanks." She scoffed "I'm still trying to get my figure back remember?"
"You don't need to lose any more weight." He said wondering how many times he said that in any given week. It sure got old.
"You have no idea what this industry demands. Maybe if you supported me a little, you'd understand." She quipped.
"Just enjoy your chunk of green crap." He turned his back on her and started a batch of eggs adding in a few extra because he knew she'd eat the leftovers as soon as he left.
By mid-morning Katherine was exhausted, frustrated and annoyed. Despite calling everyone, no one could stay with Gavin so she could make the casting call. To make matters worse he cried for nearly an hour after Damon left this morning. Making her splitting headache even worse.
She put together another one of the frozen vegetarian entrees for lunch this was an enchilada tofu meal and she liked it a better than her breakfast one so she hoped Gavin would too.
She fastened him in his booster seat, and he stared sullenly at the plate in front of him.
"It's yummy try it." She smiled taking a bite it wasn't too bad she figured.
"Gavin stop picking at it and eat." She said.
He ignored her and kept pushing the food around his plate.
"I don't like it." He said in a quiet voice.
"You didn't try it." She countered. "You're worse than your dad. You eat what mommy makes you."
Her phone went off drowning out his pleas for his Emmy or his daddy.
"Hello?" She raised an eyebrow wondering why Elena of all people would be calling her.
"Katherine hey, it's me your sister Elena." She stammered sounding nervous.
"I know who you are, Elena." Katherine scoffed. "What do you want?"
"I uh...I'd never ask if it wasn't. Look I'm desperate. I'm about to get kicked out of my apartment, and it's not my fault. I just need..."
"Are you begging me for money? Is that what this is?" Katherine cut her off with a grin and an amused look crossing her face.
"I'll pay you back I swear." Elena pleaded.
"Just how would you do that?" Katherine decided to toy with her, might as well get some amusement out of her otherwise crappy day so far.
"I don't know but I will I swear..." Elena said in a breathy voice.
"I don't know. So basically, you're not asking for a loan, but a handout is that right?" Katherine pushed.
"No not a handout I will pay you back somehow." Elena said her voice growing rough.
"Just admit it's a handout and maybe I'll ask my husband if he feels like donating to a charitable cause." Katherine grinned fully enjoying the game now.
"Mommy down." Gavin held his arms up trying to wiggle out of his booster seat.
"Eat your lunch first." She pointed to his still full plate.
"Forget it, forget I even called." Elena muttered before hanging up the phone.
Katherine giggled. "That was fun."
"Mommy it's yucky." Gavin was cringing as he took a bite of food.
"You're not getting down until you finish your plate." Katherine said firmly.
He looked down and sniffled his eyes pooling with tears. "I want Emmy."
"Stop saying that." Katherine huffed and walked over to him. She unhinged his booster char and lifted him down.
"Fine, if you won't eat what I made you must not he hungry then." She said he looked up at her with wet eyes.
Her phone rang again, and she sighed in frustration she glanced back over at Gavin, but knew she couldn't ignore the call, it was her manager Nicklaus Smythe.
"I'll make you something else okay, right after this call, now go play." She said dismissively.
He nodded and ran off into the living room.
"Downstairs in your playroom!" She hollered he turned around and ran back climbing down the stairs as she sat to take her call.
"Nick, Look I'm sorry about the casting." She said right away.
"Don't worry about that Katie." He said his vice booming with excitement. "I have some much better news."
"You do?" She raised an eyebrow.
"How does fashion week in New York sound dear? We leave Friday night." He purred.
"Amazing." She breathed her deep brown eyes wide. "There's no way though Nick. We don't have a full-time nanny and my husband doesn't want one." She mumbled. "I won't be able to go."
"Make it happen Katie" Nick said an edge to his voice. "The window is closing fast. Many fresh faces are right behind you, ready to knock you further back. I simply cannot waste my time on someone that cannot commit."
"Nick what am I supposed to do? Damon's never going to let me go." She said her eyes widening in horror, had he threatened to replace her?
"I remember a time when no one told you what to do and you could make anything happen if you wanted it." He said.
"I know but my son..." She sighed.
"Make it happen." He said again before hanging up.
Damon was home early that evening and surprised to walk in and smell Italian food. He walked into the kitchen to find Katherine had oared food from his favorite Italian restaurant.
"What's all this?"
"Surprise." She turned around and gave him a small smile.
"Daddy!" Gavin raced into the kitchen Damon scooped him right up and spun him around.
"Don't make him too dizzy it's time to eat." Katherine gestured to the table.
"Let's get this big guy strapped in then." Damon set him down on his booster chair.
"No." Gavin pushed away the small seatbelt as Damon went to hook it in. "No want that."
"Okay, big boy, you don't need it anyway. We used to sit on phone booths." Damon shrugged.
"That's silly daddy." Gavin laughed.
"It's true." He said.
"He walked to school uphill both ways too." Katherine said with a small smile that further surprised him, she was joking around and smiling? That was a rarity.
Katherine dished up plates for them. Gavin dug right into making a saucy mess all over himself as a result.
"This is good mommy." He said.
"Use your fork Gavin." She sighed leaning over to try and wipe him up.
"Oh, let him eat messy. Its Italian food." Damon grinned at Gavin who laughed loud and shoved more of the pasta into his mouth.
"You're bathing him tonight." Katherine said giving him a look.
"So, what is all this?" He asked giving her a suspicious look.
"Can't I just order food? I know you hate the healthy stuff. I figured you deserved a treat." She replied easily.
"I was thinking about our fight last night and I think your right. I need a balance." She said his eyes widened in surprise.
"I think a part time nanny would be a reasonable compromise, don't you?" She continued.
"Yes..." He said slowly.
"Good then, I'll need you to find one. I'm going to work harder at establishing a schedule and balancing Gavin time and work time. But I expect you to support my career." She added.
"I do Katherine just not at the expense of..."
"No, you don't Damon. Maybe you did once but not anymore." She cut him off.
"Do you want me to list the ways?" He implored his blue eyes boring into her deep brown ones.
"No, I don't. I want you to prove it now. I need to go to New York for the week. This is going to open some doors for me, if I can get known again, I won't have to do so many of these events. This is your chance to prove you support me career." She said.
"One week?" He raised his eyebrow, if she truly meant it when she said she was willing to work out a schedule and balance things better he didn't see why he couldn't 'prove it' like she wanted. He wished she would have just asked instead of manipulating him into it, but he decided not to swell on the details.
"Yes, just one week." She pleaded.
"Well we've finally wrapped up the case. Stefan's ready for court. I can be home more for a while until something big comes along again." He said thoughtfully.
"So that's a yes?" She asked looking surprised.
His phone rang and he frowned seeing it was his grandmother from Italy.
"Hold on a sec it's my grandma."
"Nana?" He picked up right away. She was terribly upset and started speaking quickly in Italian. Her good friend and long-time live-in nurse Pearl had died in an accident and she was beside herself.
Damon soothed her and promised he would be there soon ignoring Katherine's sharp intake of breath.
"When will you be back?" She asked the second he ended the phone call.
"The funeral is Thursday night Kat. I won't be back until Sunday. You can still go; you'll just miss the first couple of days." Damon said.
"The most important days." She exclaimed.
Gavin looked up and jumped at her harsh tone before dropping his eyes back to his messy plate.
"I need to be there for her. She was there for me when I needed her the most, she needs me now. I have to go." Damon insisted.
"Take him with you then." Katherine said.
"I have to leave tonight to make it in time for the wake. I don't have time to get him a passport nor do I think he's ready for a funeral." Damon sighed. "I will try to get back Saturday night how's that?"
"I can't believe you! A second ago, you were going to say I could go!" She exclaimed.
"I'm not your dad telling you no." He scoffed. "We have a son; I can't be here, so you need to be."
"Maybe Isobel will stay here with him." She murmured.
"No, I don't want that happening right now. A few hours is fine but you're not leaving him with anyone for two days until I get back. Not after Emily just left and now, I have to go. He'll feel abandoned." Damon whispered.
"He'll be fine." She rolled her eyes.
"This is your chance to step up and prove you want to balance like you claim you do." He threw her works back at her. Her eyes flickered and darkened to an almost back she got up and left the kitchen. The tension remained heavy in the room even without her.
He glanced over at Gavin to see him pushing the food around his plate.
"Hey bud, you full?"
"I don't know." He said.
"I'm sorry mommy and daddy fight." Damon said in a soft voice. Gavin always got quiet like this when they fought, and it hurt to see him like this.
"Don't go daddy." Gavin begged.
"It's just going to be for a few days okay?" Damon said brushing some sauce form Gavin's hair and smiling a little.
"No." Gavin whined his eyes welling up with tears and his lips trembling.
"I'm coming right back okay? I promise." Damon hugged him to his chest.
He picked him up from his booster seat and carried him upstairs for his bath. His heart heavy and his gut twisted with worry.
Gavin calmed down in the bathtub as they played with all his bath toys and Damon managed to take his mind as well as his son's off the fact he was leaving. He wasn't sure about leaving at all, but how could he not help Nana through this? Pearl meant the world to her.
This would give Katherine some one on one time to bond with Gavin; she needed that they both need that, he told himself.
"Daddy I want to go with you." Gavin announced once Damon had him tucked into bed.
"Not this time Gavin." He curled in next to him and stroked his hair.
"I'll be back before you know it. Tomorrow is Thursday and daddy will be back by Sunday okay?" He said. Four days."
"I don't want to stay here with mommy." Gavin cried.
"Shh hey it'll be okay, I promise, daddy will be home before you know it." Damon soothed him.
"Guess what else?" Damon asked.
"What?"
"When I get back, I'm going to take some days off work so we can hang out a lot and do lots of fun stuff, me and you, How's that sound?"
"Yes!" He exclaimed his blue eyes lighting up.
"I love you Gavin." he kissed his head. "I could never be gone for long."
"I love you daddy." He whimpered the tiredness oozing from his meek voice.
"Good night buddy, I'll see you real soon okay?" Damon promised.
"See he's upset too." Katherine snapped at him as he quietly left the room. He ignored her walking into their room to pack.
"You can't just leave." She demanded. "This thing is important to me."
"So is this." He said refusing to back down this time.
"You still get to go." He said.
"Too late." She spat back.
"Your rude agent can show off photos of you until you get there." He rolled his eyes.
"Manager, Nick is my manager. You're such an ass sometimes." She corrected him. "Do you see how there is no support?"
"I want you to go, but someone died Katherine what do you expect me to do?" He glared at her. "Can I trust you here with him?"
"Of course, you can I'm his mother for crying out loud." She snapped.
"I have to go Kat this is family." He said giving her an almost pleading look.
"Fine go, I'll go to New York when you get back." She backed down but her eyes remained cold.
"Have a good trip." She said in a dismissive tone.
"It's a funeral." He muttered before turning to leave.
Elena was seething as she walked home from work that night. She couldn't help but continue to replay the conversation she had with Katherine all day. How could she be so callous and awful? She thought calling Katherine was easier somehow. What a joke.
"You have to call Isobel." She blanched at the thought she'd rather call Katherine back and beg.
The official notice hanging on her door confirmed what she knew was true. She had no other choice other than to beg old friends for money and she couldn't do that. Her best friend Bonnie would help but she would figure out it was Jeremy that put Elena in a pinch. Bonnie dated Jeremy for years before they ended badly after one of his relapses. Bringing Jeremy up was painful for Bonnie and she couldn't do that. Now that she was finally happy in Boston.
Caroline was married to Matt and pregnant with their second child Elena knew how they were doing and wouldn't dare ask them for help. She didn't have any other friends close enough she could go to.
"I'm sorry Elena." Her landlord Eric Hathaway stood in the hallway with a grim face. "I can't continue to allow you to fall behind on your rent."
"Please Eric just give me some more time." Elena begged.
"I can't Elena." He said. "I've let you slide far too much as it is."
"Just a week can you give me a week?" She begged.
"One week." He relented his brown eyes sad. "That's it no more chances."
"Thank you I swear I'm going to get the money." She promised.
"Damn it." She swore softy tears brimming in her eyes as she forced herself to dial her Bio mom.
"Elena?" Isobel seemed surprised.
"Hi, Isobel, I uh..."
"What kind of trouble are you in?" Isobel questioned her tone harsh.
Elena felt annoyed instantly how could she judge her now? What right did she have?
Not now, she told herself.
"I just… works been slow, and I had to help a friend. I need a little money for rent." Elena said quickly like she was ripping of a bandage.
"Then what? Will work pick up do you have a better job lined up?" Isobel questioned.
Worse, definitely worse than Katherine, she decided.
"Well I hope so..." Elena stammered.
"You can move in here with me. We'll find you a career or school. You have no future there." Isobel said.
"No, I don't want to live with you." Elena said balling her hands into fists. "Please can you just lend me some money?"
"So, you can stay there and go nowhere?" Isobel questioned. "No absolutely not. I'll buy you a ticket."
"Forget it no way." Elena said shaking her head. "I won't live with you."
"Just until you get yourself on your feet." Isobel said.
"I'll figure something else out." Elena hung up and sank down in defeat letting the tears finally run down her face.
Katherine was awoken early Thursday morning with a tugging on her arm.
"Mommy, mommy wake up."
"Oh Gavi" She groaned and opened one eye. "What?"
"I got my big boy pants wet." He said a sour expression on his face.
"Oh, for the love of..." She groaned and threw the blankets off her. She took his arm and walked him into the bathroom.
"Oh god." She gagged. "You didn't pee you pooped your pants!"
She shuddered and turned the bathtub water on. She gagged and coughed as she cleaned him up.
"This is disgusting Gavin!" She scolded him. "You're a big boy now, big boys don't poop their pants!"
"I didn't mean too." He whimpered.
Once she had him dressed, she threw away his pajamas and groaned when she walked into his room finding his bed wet. He was at her heel, tears falling down his cheeks as he watched her. She just shook her head angrily at him. She went to the hall and got some cleaning stuff. He was sitting on his bed when she got back.
"Get off the dirty bed!" She yelled.
He jumped off and stared at her with eyes as wide as saucers.
"You were a bad boy popping the bed Gavi." She admonished; he watched her his eyes wide as she cleaned his bed up. "You know better."
His eyes welled up with tears then and he started crying. He tuned and raced out of her room yelling for daddy.
"He's not here Gavin. He had to take off to Italy." She sighed her phone rang she frowned it was Nick what was she supposed to tell him?
"Nick listen..."
"Tell me you are packed for New York." He interrupted her.
"I want daddy!" Gavin cried out.
"No nanny yet?" Nick questioned.
"I have everything under control." She said, an idea quickly working itself out in her mind.
Damn the consequences. Since when did she let anyone, much less her stupid little faithful lap dog husband, tell her what to do?
"You better." He warned.
"I will see you Friday darling." She promised in a seductive voice.
She thumbed through her recent calls and dialed a number a smirk on her face.
"Katherine?" The breathy voice answered.
"Elena. I have a question." Katherine walked into her room and her eyes fell on Gavin who was curled on the bed crying into his dad's pillow and kicking his legs furiously.
"What Katherine?" Elena sighed.
"How are you with kids?" Katherine asked a grin on her face.
