So Far Away
5 years
5 years since she had to watch the man she'd fallen in love with leave her behind. Since he sacrificed himself to save her, his family, his city, and his planet. He gave everything so that his people may live.
But Sabine didn't see it that way, not entirely.
She saw it as him abandoning her, she hated herself for letting him leave her that fateful day in the Imperial dome. She hated him for putting her in the position that while he was escaping, she had to distract the rest of the crew. Sabine knew why he did it, but she was heartbroken that he did. But after 5 long years, it was time to bring Ezra home.
She was already 3 months in to the search, but since then Ahsoka had split off to cover more ground. Sabine had taken Ezra's Gauntlet to follow the trail on her own. Being alone was something that Sabine found both comforting yet uncomforting. She had more time to herself for her art and other activities, but it gave her no one to talk to. Sure she could always call Hera, but that was dependent on whether she had a meeting or was with her son Jacen. The silence left her to think about the last five years on Lothal, thinking about all her work with the Lothal Defense Force, her times looking after Jacen when Hera was in battle, least of all she tried not to think of how lonely she was in all that time. She still had her family on Krownest, she had Hera, she had Ryder, but the one person she wanted most was Ezra. Still deep in thought she barely heard her console beeping and flashing, indicating incoming transmission. She opened it to find Hera looking at her with worry in her eyes.
"Hey Sabine, I'm just checking in. I know this road has been rough and I thought you might wanna talk to someone." Hera spoke in her motherly tone that Sabine was so used to.
"No I think I'm fine, its just hard. I have this feeling, not really a hunch but something more. I know I'm close, but I still can't find him." Sabine said as she rechecked her course along the trail.
"This won't be easy, and I'm proud of you for sticking this out for him". There was a long pause before Hera spoke again. "You love him, don't you?" she asked as if she already knew.
"I guess I do, I mea- I thi- UGH, I believe I do. Everything made sense when he was around. That day in the dome, it took all I had to let him leave without telling him how I felt." She was on the verge of tears by now.
"I know sweetie, I know. But you have to have faith in him, you will find him and then you two can be with each other again." Hera said as she tried to comfort her surrogate daughter.
"I know Hera, but I don't even know if he loves me anymore. You saw the way he acted after Malachor. A part of the old Ezra was lost, the part that made simple attempts to get me to notice him left." Sabine was crying at this point, something Hera rarely saw.
"You know he loves you, that cylinder on you belt proves it." Hera said almost defiantly.
"How do you mean? He gave it to Chopper before he left and Chopper gave it to me." Her voice was shaky and her eyes were glassy.
Hera sighed, "Kanan once told me that a lightsaber is not just the weapon of the Jedi, but it is also their life. Ezra knew Chopper would give it to you because if he had to trust anyone with his life it would be you Sabine."
Sabine picked up the blade handle and ran her fingers over it. If she tried real hard, she could almost hear his voice telling her he loved her.
"Thanks Hera, I needed to hear that. I'm sure you're busy so I will let you go." Sabine said with a soft smile.
"Its not problem, but I do need to put Jacen down, so I will see you when you bring him home. I love you Sabine". Hera said once again in her motherly tone.
"I love you too Hera, Spectre 5 out." Sabine sat back in the pilots chair and held the lightsaber handle close to her heart. She wasn't sure how long she sat there waiting, but the console started to beep again only this time it was that she was closing in on her destination. She eased the Mandalorian Komr'k class fighter out of hyper space. Before her was a light green planet, her sensors showed many life signs, but no technology. However, there was a small beacon coming from a small area of grasslands. For the first time in a long time, Sabine had hope.
She piloted the ship down to the field to see a crashed imperial shuttle, the wings were ripped apart but the main piece of the body looked intact. She approached the fallen shuttle, helmet on and pistols drawn. As she entered, she noticed the amount of supplies that looked Imperial, ration wrappers on the floor or in a small bucket in the corner, a small bed made up of sleeping packs in the corner of the main hold. There was a small radio on a box in the corner. The type of music that was playing was not something she recognized, but she couldn't help but hear it's message. It was a song about having to leave a girl behind and regretting it, and praying that she would be watched over when they're not around, or much to far away.
Before she realized it, the song ended and another came on, seemingly by the same band. This song was about losing a loved one, from what she could figure they died. When listening to the sad ballad, she couldn't help but think that this song was about her and Ezra. The song was called "So Far Away", but she didn't catch the name of the band. She froze when she heard footsteps coming up the ramp behind her.
Ok guys, please don't hate me. This is my first fanfic and I have no idea what I'm doing. I ask for reviews and comments but I don't know where this will go yet.
