— Gilbert —
Wednesday, August 10th, 4:15pm
Redmond Medical Department, Kingsport, Nova Scotia
Anne pulled me out of the building, down the steps and around a corner to a courtyard where I'd remembered once sitting with her in our first year, under a cherry tree in bloom that she'd insisted was the perfect place to read even if neither of us had any classes there there. But then when Anne dragged me, I'd go willingly anywhere. My stomach was rolling, as I struggled to not clutch my hands too tight as I sat down with Anne under the dark green foliage of the cherry tree. I glanced up and saw Dr. Bernard follow us.
"No matter what they decide Gilbert," He spoke. "I'm proud of you and I'll help you with your future."
"What do you think they'll..." Anne started to speak but her words trailed off. Not even I could think of it.
"If they have a heart? They'll allow Gilbert to keep the scholarship. But they'll need a 2/3 majority, and that Mr. Gardiner and a few others seemed quite determined to stick to strict standards. If you loose the scholarship your place in the program won't be lost, at least right away. Different committee for that, I'm afraid that's the most likely, loose the scholarship and stay in the program. Though some of them will try to get you out completely."
I took a deep breath. I might not have the funds to attend, but I still might become a Doctor. "I will be Dr. Blythe."
"And one of the best ones I'll ever know." He nodded. "Well, I best run over to my office to wrap up things. Hopefully we'll be able to celebrate."
I sat there, Anne sitting beside me, my arm on her shoulder, her hand on my thigh, and her head on my shoulder. I remembered sitting there over three years before, day dreaming of the future. In that dream I was between classes, in medical school and sitting there with Anne, as my fiancé. Only instead here I was with Anne as my wife. Quite the improvement. Sure it was nerve wracking how I'd provide for our family as I graduated. But somehow in that moment I just knew. I'd be Dr. Gilbert Blythe and one day we'd move back to the Island, start our family if we hadn't already before graduation and raise half a dozen children near the Island shore. Even if I lost it, I could be a nurse, or even a farmer, but I'd always have the greatest gift from Providence. Anne.
I glanced up noticing Royal Gardiner coming towards us. He was smoking a cigar, as he strode towards us. "Really, I'd pack your bags if I were you Blythe." He drilled.
"Smoking?" Anne asked.
"Yes, something a real man does. Rather glad now you said no Anne Shirley, would have been me in disaster. I heard about all those scrapes you've hushed up before Redmond. But then, perhaps you really should have chosen the real man, I heard his poetry once. Really? Gilbert Blythe?" He puffed and glared at us.
I could feel Anne shaking, putting my free hand on hers, I was about to speak when she did. "Gilbert Blythe is the most romantic man I know. He's also the most humble. You have your future laid out before you, handed on a silver platter. But not Gilbert or me. I didn't fit in your world, and I'm sorry it took me two years to realize it Roy. I wish you the best, and hope you'll find the right girl. The one whom cant imagine life without you."
"Well, you did teach me one thing. Dreams and romance? Pointless." He growled.
"No." I spoke. "We stop living when we stop dreaming. Sure sometimes pursuing our dreams we can get into a mighty big scrape, make mistakes, and even fall into sin, intentional or not. But a real man keeps dreaming, even when he makes mistakes, he just corrects the course."
"That's true." Anne nodded. "No matter the decision. Gilbert will be a Doctor, one way or another, because we will keep dreaming."
He huffed, was turning to leave us when Anne spoke. "Roy, romance isn't poetry, or love making as in the books. The romantic hero who spouts for pages the ideals. No, romance is finding beauty in the ordinary, hope in the day in and day out. It's not the romantic story of the Prince Charming and the princess. It's the day in and day out. The one who knows your darkest secrets, and still will look you in the eye with love. Who'll get up when the baby's crying at 3am so you can finally sleep even though he's got a meeting. Who'll give up his dreams for what's more important."
"More important?" Roy glared.
I grinned. "It's not status, or being the best, or looking the best, being the most handsome couple, though I must admit Anne and I are, especially with her beautiful red hair..."
"Gilbert." Anne rolled her eyes.
"It's no matter what you decide. It's not what's important. We'll have a great marriage, with no regrets. Because, each day we'll laugh at our hard, and dream, even if we don't have sun bursts and marble halls..."
"Oh but we'll have so much more. Love. Family. And such scope for the imagination." Anne sighed with a grin. "So no matter what you on the committee decide. Our future does look bright. Because we're in it together. And one day, Roy, you'll find that girl..."
"I'm sure... Well, as I doubt I'll see you again. Enjoy your life." He huffed and finally left.
"We will be alright, won't we Gilbert. We'll just keep facing it together?"
"Yes." I nodded, glancing down at my pocket watch. We had five minutes left, it didn't look good. But I'd fight for my future with Anne. I'd fight for all my dreams. Somehow I'd be a Doctor. I stood up with her, kissed her quickly, grinned. "Wanted to kiss you the first time we sat here during our first year. and I will... Even if we both have to work."
"You're going to be Dr. Blythe."
"I'm going to be Dr. Blythe." I grinned, "Now come on... Let's just get it over with. Because I'm done with others judging us. IT's time to move forward."
So with our arms around each other, we slowly made our way back.
