Chapter Twelve: Classes Resume Part One

The previous day had been a long one, for the second year students. If one could call becoming familiar with one's familiars a long arduous task. Well it was for some, too others, well it was just another free day, still even more had much more to do. Familiars were their lifelong friends thankfully, so it's not like they didn't have the time. One such student was still rolling in her bed today.

"Louise the Zero can't even summon anything."

"What a joke, she's already tried twice.."

"If you fail again I will have to dispel you. Your mother will be so ashamed. Maybe you shouldn't even try..."

'Please, let me try again Professor!'

"My clothes are still sooty from your previous attempts Louise, I don't think a third explosion is worth any of our time."

Louise looked all around, all her classmates were chuckling, laughing at her. Her failure. She huddled into herself. 'I can do this Louise! It's just a dumb summon!'

"Please stop wasting our time Zero, everyone knows your about to be expelled here."

'Shut up! I'll show you!'

"Miss Valliere would you please stop wasting all of our precious time and fail the ritual already. I have new inventions to craft."

"Can't you just expel her now professor?"

'Please no...' Louise's heart clenched.

"Hurry up Miss Valliere!" Her professor shouted.

'Yes!'

…...

"Another explosion. Typical zero."

'Wait I summoned something. You can see it.'

"Oh, look the zero killed her familiar!"

"Hey Guiche do you think your Familiar eats cooked bird?" The black silhouette laughed.

"I wouldn't want Veranda getting sick. Maybe Louise was getting Hungry, eating her new Familiar seems like par the course for the Zero."

Everyone kept laughing as Louise scrunched into a ball on the ground cradling her dead Familiar.

"While I'm flattered you tried to make me dinner, I like baked bird of paradise, not road kill."

'Stop!' She yelled as a curse flew from her wand.

"Did her curse just backfire? Typical Zero. Enjoy spitting up slugs!" The shadow cackled.

'Bleh!'

"The Zero is so gross! She's Zero Slug!"

'Why!?'

…...

"Cooo!"

Louise bolted upright in her bed. Everything was still hazy, and the red glow of early morning was slowly penetrating her windows curtains. It was the same color red as some of her Familiars feathers.

"Coo!" Fawkes spoke again from the center of her bed. Her Familiar, the dumb bird, was sitting on a sack at the center of her bed.

"Just what have you been up to Fawkes?" Louise asked the bird.

"Coo?"

Louise reached for the brown rough sack as Fawkes flew back to her perch. While her nightmare still bothered her, she was still curious what her Familiar had brought her now.

The bags contents emptied unto her bed as she tried to pull it closer to herself.

Thousands of lemon drops poured out unto her bed. She gave Fawkes a dirty look. Whilst Fawkes only puffed out in pride. Louise face palmed at her familiars antics. Was this how she would great every morning from now on. Her room was still littered with the junk from yesterday. Her Familiar liked to get her things, that was not surprising, it was one of the jobs of Familiars after all... Still, this..

She huffed finally, as glaring at the bird did little for her circumstances. She reached out and grabbed a few of the candies popping them into her mouth.. Sweet, with the taste of a lemon, oddly she found herself calming down. Perhaps Fawkes new better then she thought, even now her emotional state from her nightmare was calming, all thanks to her Familiar!

Fawkes puffed her chest and trilled as Louise stroked her golden belly feathers. The song eased Louise's heart and soon she was slowly forgetting her nightmares.

*Chapter Twelve: Classes Resume Part One*

Tabitha was finally finished getting dressed for the day. History class, Lunch, Transmutation class, dinner, then a free period so she could get caught up on the adventures of Ji Ning, see how his sword arts were coming along. She wished she also had the body of a fiendgod, but alas such things were fiction. Still maybe some of the things she read could be applied...

She glanced over to her favorite reading chair. It was still stained with blood despite her elemental water magic. It pained her to do it, but she couldn't let anyone see the stains.

"Scourgify." She chanted quietly. She hated resorting to the magic that man and woman had taught her. The same magic that rendered her mother a shell of a human being.

Knock knock...

Tabitha grabbed her staff as she walked towards the window. A simple wind spell opened the window and curtains.

"Scree!" Chanted her familiar Slyphid.

Tabitha looked over her Familiar before her face settled into a frown. The reason for such a thing became obvious the moment anyone saw Slyphid. Slyphid was currently hovering in front of her window whilst carrying a large sack.

Slyphid wasted no time, once the window was open. Dropping the rough sack into the room, covering the floor in individually wrapped candies.

Tabitha blushed as her nude female dragon stood in human form before her. "Where?"

"Big sister! I brought you Lemon drops!" The human formed dragon shouted, ignoring her question.

"Irukukwu..." Tabitha glared. While seeing her Familiar nude was distracting, it wasn't as if communal baths weren't a normal part of society.

"Sorry Big sister. Irukukwu went with boss to cheer up big sis!" The dragon girl pushed some candy into Tabitha's hands.

"Boss?" Tabitha asked and stated.

"Fawkes, Irukukwu first friend other then Big Sis! Boss calls me Big Blue!" The girl said animatedly.

Tabitha flinched at the idea that her Familiar was making other friends with others Familiars. If they discovered what she was, Tabitha could lose another important family member.

"No friends. Just big sister..." Tabitha coldly stated. Sometimes Tabitha just wished that Slyphid was just a simple snow beast like Little Fairy Yuechan's profound beast Little-chan. Things were so much simpler in her books, in books a young cultivator would always show up to save someone in her shoes.

Irukukwu frowned, but nodded her head in acceptance. Big sister was her master.

"Behave little sister." Tabitha spoke as she left the room.

Irukukwu looked around the room, she needed to find out what had so greatly upset her sister. As her eyes darted around the room she came across a book thrown into the corner covered in dried blood.

'Sisters new book!' Irukukwu snatched up the blood encrusted book from the floor. The title Coiling dragon nearly eligible, the pages all stuck together. Even worse the blood was that of her master!

Irukukwu didn't know much about books, but even she could tell the book was ruined, but why? Who had attacked big sister!?

"Scree!" She emitted a small dragons roar.

For Tabitha who had already left the room, she could not hear her Familiars agony, that of a Familiar failing her master. A Familiars most vital job, the happiness of their master.

*Chapter Twelve: Classes Resume Part One*

Lyda passed by a blue haired student as she adjusted her maid's dress on the stairs. She could not look at the girl without giving away what she had saw. Earlier she had dropped off the girls clothes at her quarters. Nobles sure were scary, she had dared not wake the noble and ask about the puddle of blood in her room. She had checked the girls breathing, least she be accused of hurting the girl. Commoners that chose to meddle in nobles affairs had a tendency to have things not turn out well for them.

Her fellow maid and friend Siesta had been showing her the ropes around the Academy. Not that it could prepare for whatever she had seen. Last night they had collected the nobles clothes and washed them, and this morning they were taking turns delivering the clothes. She wished Siesta had gotten this drop off instead, she was a seasoned maid, probably she'd seen things like this before. This blue haired mages clothes had been the final delivery. Why the girl had her own private room in a tower, was not for her to know. But it probably meant she was important.

For the mousy, short, curly browned haired maid, Lyda, the matters of the Academy were still new to her. She would have to ask Siesta about the normal practices of the nobles, especially this incident. Although Siesta had given her a warning not to look into nobles matters that much, her friend had quite the info available about them anyways. Well maids always had the latest gossip, or so she had heard.

Siesta had been quite shocked when they had cleaned the Duke Daughter Valliere's room together last night. She had commented it was very unlike the noble girl to have such a messy room. Well at least that room had no blood stains...

Lyda sighed in frustration as she got an empty basket out of the maid's closest.

She would have to tell Siesta about the blue haired mages room later. Right now she had to collect the lower floors clothes. Siesta was a good friend to her, and it helped they both came from nearby farms. Her family really needed the money back home. Due to the war, crop purchase prices were lowered at the commoners expense. The tax was not very popular. It even had quite a few of Princess Henrietta's most staunch supporters second guessing their support.

*Chapter Twelve: Classes Resume Part One*

Kirche hadn't slept very well. Every time she looked at her chamber pot, she was reminded of the slugs... Because of that she had to cancel all her dates yesterday. Poor Styx, Manicamp, Ajax, and Gimli. Men of such passion... Well there was always the next day. Romance didn't run on any time tables after all. Well, none that her men needed to know about anyways... Still her time had been wasted, all thanks to that zero, had it not been for her best friend, well her whole day would have been completely ruined.

Kirche stormed out of her room heading towards the upper levels. Her best friend had a private room in the tower after all. Behind her a pink haired girl, with a Phoenix on her shoulder, headed down the stairs in the opposite direction.

"Tabitha!" Kirche called out to her friend as she walked down the stairs.

Tabitha glanced at her friend, before coldly looking away. She would steel her heart.

"Hey!" Kirche attempted to grab her blunette friend.

Tabitha stopped Kirche's hand, before continuing along the corridor.

Kirche was taken aback. Why was her best friend acting so coldly too her. The same friend that comforted her with a bucket for hours while stroking her back in silence? Had she done something wrong? Last night they had both enjoyed the adventures of Linley and his Familiar Rat Bebe...

"Wait.." She whispered too herself, as Tabitha walked further away.

Kirche grasped her heart. What was going on here, why did she hurt so badly... She stood against the wall for some time, unsure of what to do with herself.

"Um, Excuse me miss? Do you have any clothes to add to the wash this morning?" A commoner maid bowed.

"Thank you but I'm all set. Didn't have any moment of passion last night..." Kirche smiled. Internally she was still a mess.

"Then I'll be going to check the other rooms Miss." The maid bowed again.

"Wait, do you happen to know why Tabitha was in such a bad mood?" Kirche blurted out to the maid.

"Tabitha?" The maid tilted her head in confusion.

"The small blue haired girl with the staff." Kirche described.

Lyda was shocked for a brief moment as her thoughts leapt back to the scene of Tabitha's room earlier. 'Why were Nobles so different.' "I'm sorry Miss, I have no idea... Perhaps she was just hungry?"

Kirche accepted that answer, but felt the maid was hiding something, but commoners always hid things from nobles. In Germania the nobles knew this better than most. "Thank you."

"Your Welcome Miss. I best be off to get the rest of the clothes for the morning wash. I don't want to make you late for breakfast." Lyda made a final bow.

'Well if the Maids can't tell me, then I will have to find out from Tabitha herself.' Kirche affirmed to herself before heading down the stairs. 'Tabitha will be at the breakfast table to eat, she can answer my questions there. She can't ignore her own best friend can she?'

*Chapter Twelve: Classes Resume Part One*

Louise's stomach growled as she made her way to the nobles dining hall. She had had several candies her Familiar Fawkes had brought her, but it simply wasn't a proper nobleman's breakfast. She stopped walking.

"Stay away from my Familiar." The blue haired girl said as she stopped Louise from entering the dinning hall.

Louise gawked a moment before Tabitha returned back to her own seat in the hall. 'What was this all about? She hadn't gone anywhere near Tabitha's blue dragon?'

Louise reached out to her. "Why?"

Tabitha glared from her seat. "Your Familiar is dangerous."

As Kirche entered the hall, she caught the tail end of her friends cold, scathing, quiet voice, directed at Louise.

"What?" Louise asked baffled.

"Leave Tabitha and her Familiar alone Louise!" Kirche marched over towards Louise whilst being heavy mouth as she did so. The fact that a maid had to stop her Familiar flame from following her into the hall was lost on her.

"Oh I think the Zero and the Zerbst are going to fight!?" Some random students shouted in the hall.

Louise started panicking for a moment. Whatever was happening right now it had quickly escalated the situation.

"Chirp!" Cried Fawkes silencing the hall.

The atmosphere of the hall returned to normal as Fawkes trilled a slight tune. For this Louise was particularly thankful. Tabitha was still glaring at her and Kirche though.

Taking a seat, Louise watched as Fawkes grabbed a piece of bacon from her plate, but she had no complaints as Fawkes had silenced all her peers. 'What would she have done without Fawkes?'

Still glaring, Kirche took a seat quite far from the zero. Tabitha had not said a word to her, nor looked like she intended too. So, after some tense silence that was quite different from the norm of the dinning hall she grew frustrated.

Tabitha was ignoring her... 'No she was glaring at her in the same way as she was Louise? What had her friend so frazzled today, what had Louise's familiar done to Tabitha? Was Louise's Familiar really dangerous?'

Kirche played with her scrambled eggs trying to contemplate a way to figure out what was going on? 'Perhaps a play date with Slyphid and Flame?'

As Kirche finished her breakfast, a long drawn out affair, she watched Tabitha left without saying a word. At least she hadn't glared at her all breakfast like she had with Louise. Or was she staring at Louise's Familiar?

Either way it was readily apparent to her, that Louise and her Familiar was the cause of her best friend's unusually quiet self. Kirche could not let this stand.

"What did you and your Familiar do to Tabitha!?" Kirche all but demanded as Louise tried to get up to leave the dinning hall.

"I've done nothing Zerbst! I am not some Germanian cow that meddles in others business as par the course!" Louise heatedly responded.

"We do not meddle!" Kirche spat back.

""Leave me alone Zerbst!" Louise made a beeline to leave the hall.

"Louise!" Kirche started to shout. But at the last moment the rest of what she had to say was silenced. Louise's Familiar glared at her like a bird of prey.

"Wait! Louise!" Kirche called after the fleeing short pink haired girl.

Louise didn't even look back as she headed towards her history class. A class taught by Jean Molinet, a professor know for his studies on the early Holy Romanian Empire. He also taught an auxiliary poetry and music composing class. Not that Louise had any interests in it, but his classes were popular among the students.

*Chapter Twelve: Classes Resume Part One*

Tabitha still had some time before History class with Professor Molinet began, so following her normal pattern she went outside to the courtyard. The trees in this courtyard provided a good place to read in the shade while still getting plenty of fresh air.

Her back against the tree, Tabitha fumbled through her pockets in annoyance as she forgot to pack a book to read, other then a history of the Holy Romanian Empire. She sighed...

"Scree!" Came Slyphid's call as the large blue dragon landed in the courtyard near her master.

Tabitha looked up at her dragon before going back to her book on history.

Slyphid nuzzled her large head against Tabitha's lower skirt.

"Stop." Tabitha said, before going back to her book.

Slyphid ignored her and grabbed a branch from a tree... The stick was placed in front of Tabitha...

"No."

"Scree..." The dragon looked crestfallen.

"No."

Slyphid laid down beside Tabitha, something quite odd given her size.

Tabitha kept glaring at her Familiar as she inched closer and closer to her...

"Screee..." Slyphis purred as Tabitha rubbed her belly, her history book sitting lightly in the grass.

Class was going to start soon...
