HAPPENSTANCE –

Chapter Seventeen

Agreeing with my reasoning, Edward gently guides my elbow as I step over the low brush and back onto the path. The feel of his hand on my skin sends a sizzle through my veins, and I have to hold back a disappointed sigh when he releases me to walk beside him on my own. He stays closer to me than he was before, though, our arms brushing against each other's every couple of steps.

The scenery isn't much different as we circle around back down the mountain, and it's my turn to chew my lip awkwardly as I try to think of something to fill the silence, this sudden rush of new feelings making my head feel like it's filled with shredded paper rather than brains. "So, uh . . . you mentioned a brother earlier. Do you have any other siblings?"

Edward nods. "I have a sister, Alice. She's two years younger than me."

"And Emmett is older?" I guess.

"Yup, two years. I'm right in the middle." There's a slight twinge in Edward's voice that makes me curious about his family dynamic and how he fits into it all, but I don't want to pry.

I share a little about my own situation instead. "Ah. Well, I'm an only child myself, so I can't really relate to any of that. I didn't even have any cousins to make up for it, either. Other than a few good childhood friends, it was mostly just my dad and me."

Edward turns his head toward me, a contemplative look on his face. "I can't decide if that sounds awesome, or lonely."

I laugh lightly, thinking back on my childhood and how it shaped who I am today. "You know what, I didn't mind. I'm pretty picky about who I spend my time with, too."

"Oh, yeah?" Edward replies, his striking green eyes holding mine.

"Yeah."
