– HAPPENSTANCE –
Chapter Eighteen
We make it back to town without further incident, the sun shining down bright and hot after the cooler shade of the forest. I'm feeling gross and grimy after my fall and what transpired in the moments after it, so we head back to the rooms so I can clean up before we continue on our adventure.
Edward's cabin is four doors down from mine, and we agree to meet back out front in an hour to decide where we'll eat dinner. I'm not sure what we might find around Forks to occupy us after that, but I do know I want this day to drag on for a long as possible. I'm enjoying Edward's company so much, from his looks to his personality to the new and exciting tingles in my belly when he stares into my eyes, or speaks, or laughs, or makes any little movement at all . . .
Oof, I've got it bad, even though I've only really known him for a few hours. With his sly smile and coy remarks, I'm pretty sure the feelings are mutual, but I still need to rein it in a bit before I get ahead of things or come on too strong. Edward seems content with how we're moving along so far, so at this point I think my best bet is just to follow his lead and see where it takes us.
Hot, sweaty, and dirty, I strip off my clothes and hop into the small shower stall, making quick work of washing my hair, face, and body. Once I'm clean, dry, and moisturized from head to toe, I go straight for my suitcase to find something to wear. I hadn't expected to get caught up in any romance this weekend, so I didn't exactly pack to impress. I find a plain white cotton t-shirt dress folded neatly at the bottom, and do my best to shake out the travel wrinkles before I slip it on. Glad I thought to bring at least a touch of light makeup, I dust some powder on my face and add a swipe each of mascara and chapstick, and with my hair up in an intentionally messy bun, I'm ready to go.
Checking out my appearance in the full-body mirror behind the bathroom door, I have to say I'm quite satisfied with how it all came out. Other than the bright-pink bandaid on my knee, I think I look pretty good. I'm not bombshell beautiful or anything, but I do feel quite summery and pretty. Either way, my hour is up, so this will have to do. After transferring my wallet and a few other supplies from my shoulder bag into a smaller purse, I slide my feet into dark-brown Gizeh Birkenstocks, then head outside to meet Edward.
