Still betaless. Still happy to make any corrections to things you spot.

Disclaimer: I don't own Chuck or the lyrics I have used. I didn't have a song in mind for this, so for once, I searched for one. This one is a great haunting song. that fits perfectly.

Chuck – After You

Chapter 13 – Unconscious

And now she lays in her bed, unconscious
And now you talk about how she had problems
Can't you see that you're the ones who caused them
Now she doesn't see the world like it sees her
And she doesn't see the world like it sees her

Oh, why can't you
Breathe harder
And try to live
'Cause I don't know what I'd do without you
Oh why can't you
Breathe clearer and try to live
Cause I don't know what I'd do my dear

"Unconscious"

It had taken a lot of time, a lot of effort, calling in favors from people she had known at the Company, people who didn't understand why she couldn't remember conversations over the last five years. She had claimed amnesia in each of those conversations and had to listen to words of sympathy, biting her lips to stop herself from cutting them off and losing the good will she needed.

Eventually, she had tracked Carina Miller down. She was on a short break between missions having just come off one lasting eighteen months. Living in a small house in a forest, away from everyone. That really surprised her. Carina always wanted to be around people, often in bed with them. Had she really changed that much?

She approaches the building making sure her face is clearly visible and her hands too. She isn't going to make any mistakes with Carina.

Her old spy senses start to tingle. Carina is here, she just doesn't know exactly where.

"Why didn't you ring?" Sarah would recognize that voice anywhere. She twists and looks behind her and there she is. Carrying some wood in from the barn.

"Oh, Red, it's so good to see you!" Sarah rushes towards her and Carina has to drop the wood before Sarah reaches her. Sarah wraps her arms around her friend and hugs her.

Initially, Carina doesn't respond, but as the hug continues, she places her hands on Sarah's back.

As Sarah pulls away, Carina says, "Wow! He really has changed you. You were never a hugger before him!"

Carina notices Sarah's eyes drop and the happiness fade. She decides to ignore it for now. "Where is Chuckles?"

"Dunno."

That's too much. The tone, the words, the look. Something's wrong. Carina groans, "What has he done?"

Sarah won't look up and quietly says, "Nothing. It's me."

Carina grabs her hand and pulls her towards the house. "You need a drink, girl."

Sitting opposite her friend, Sarah tells her the sad story. Carina interrupts her a lot. When she has finished, Carina decides she needs to recap, to make sure she's got it right.

"So, you downloaded this Intersect thing into your head. Then some shitty agent from the CIA, Quinn, captures you on a train in Japan, taking you away from Chuckles and Casey. He somehow wipes five years of your memories and tells you you've been on a five-year seduction mission with a traitor and married him for the cover. Quinn tells you that you now have to kill this man and get some "Intersect glasses" from him. You fail to kill Chuckles and together kill this Quinn. Then you leave the love of your life, because you can't remember him, even though you still have feelings for him. While away, you start getting memories back and the earliest ones of him are of him leaving you or having sex with his ex, so you write to tell him you'll never go back to him. Then, and only then, you get happy memories and realize you both love each other."

Carina looks at her friend. "Is that right?"

Sarah, looking miserable, just nods.

"Christ, Sarah! What a shit show!" Carina says.

In a very quiet voice, Sarah replies, "I know."

Carina is getting frustrated, "So, why the hell aren't you with him?"

"He won't want me, Red. He'll hate me!"

"The hell he won't! That guy loves you. He'll always love you!"

"Have you talked to him?"

"I haven't talked to anyone. If I had talked to either of you, it'd be you, Blondie. You know that."

"I guess."

"Have you talked to anyone back there? Casey? Ellie? Morgan?"

"No. I got rid of my old phone. I don't have their numbers. Even if I had, I couldn't call his family and not him." She looks embarrassed. "I lost your number the same way. Sorry, Red."

Carina wakes that off. "So, what about Casey?"

"No number. Same as with you."

"Well, we'll deal with that right now. I still have his number." Carina gets up and pulls her phone from her back pocket. She finds the number and shows it to her friend.

Sarah taps the number into her phone and stores it against his name.

This is it. Someone who probably does know what's been happening. She is feeling nervous again.

"Just call! I'll go get some more drinks." With that Carina walks away.

Sarah makes the call.

Casey answers almost immediately. "Walker. What the f-".

She cuts him off. "Hello John. How are you?"

A trademark grunt makes her smile. "Fine. You?"

"Not so good John."

Another grunt.

She continues, "I got some memories back."

"I heard." He sounds angry.

That surprises her. "You did?"

"Got called back to Burbank because of it."

The letter.

"Bartowski was a mess." He pauses, but then says, "Suicidal."

She gasps, then cries out, "Oh God!"

"he's okay now. We watched him 24 hour a day until he was."

She has to ask. "We?"

"Verbanski, Frost and me."

That almost brings a smile to her face. She asks, "You're still with Gertrude?"

"Yeah."

"So, Chuck's okay now?" She really wants him to be.

"Yes."

So, the big question. "Do… Do you think he'd … have me back?"

He sounds exasperated when he replies, "Shit, Walker, that's all he wants!"

"He's not found someone better?"

He snarls at that. "For all the crap you throw at each other, neither of you would find anyone better!"

That actual makes her smile. "Aww. That's sweet. Thanks, John."

Grunt.

"Is he still there? In the apartment?" Sarah tentatively questions.

"No."

As ungiving as ever. "So, where is he?"

"Maimi."

Getting frustrated, she says, "I'll need more than that, John!"

He is silent for a minute, then says, "Are you going back? Permanently? Or are you going to walk again?"

She should have expected this. Protecting his friend. "I've gotten a lot more memories back. I now know the reasons for his treatment of me. I also have a lot of very happy memories, John. A lot. I love him and I remember us together."

He grunts, then says, "That didn't answer me. Stay or leave?"

"Stay," she says with absolute conviction. She is, however, tentative as she continues, "If he'll have me."

An approving grunt. "I'll text you his address."

She grins like she's never grinned before. "Thank you, John. You're a life saver."

With a final grunt, he ends the call.

Carina walks over with drinks. "So, still single and pining for you!"

Sarah looks up at her friend. "Not single. Married. He's mine!"

Carina grins. "Atta girl!"

She has decided to go straight there, but doesn't have many clothes with her. Not wanting to go home first, she decides to get some new clothes en route. It'll be hot and it sounds like he is by a beach. Swimwear and summer clothes are needed.

She has just topped up her tank and decides to go into the next city, Dallas. She hasn't been to Dallas for a while.

She parks and is about to go into the shopping mall, when the car that has been behind her since the gas station drives passed and two shots ring out. One hits her left shoulder, the other her head. She falls to the ground, hitting the other side of her head on her car on the way.

Blackness.

His phone is ringing. Irritated to be getting disturbed so soon after leaving them all, he grabs it and snaps, "What?!"

A voice he doesn't recognize replies, "Mr Bartowski?"

Somehow, a cold caller had tracked him down. He is about to hang up when the woman asks again, "Charles Bartowski, of Carmichael Industries?"

Wondering who would know those details, he says, "Who's asking?"

"This is Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. We found your contact details on a woman here."

Shocked, he asks, "Found?"

"Yes, she's unconscious, so we had to search her purse. She had your card. With this number written on the back. We hoped you'd know her."

All he can get out is, "W-what does she look like?"

"Blonde, slim, five nine."

He sits down hard, "Oh, God! Sarah!"

"So you know her?"

"She's my wife. Sarah Bartowski."

"Oh, that's good! We need you to come to her. Bring her insurance details, unless you have them available now."

"No, but I'll bring then. I'll come straight away."

"Thank you."

He has never driven anywhere as fast as that journey.

Sarah is hurt, but she's alive!

He parks the car and runs into the hospital. He gets directed to the ward she is on and after showing his identification and her medical insurance details, he gets taken to her.

Even with all the medical equipment attached to her and the bandages and bruises on her face and head, she is still the most beautiful woman in the world.

She has no makeup on. He's not sure if they had removed it when treating her or if she no longer wears it, but she never needed it anyway. She is stunning, just as he remembers. Looking at her takes his breathe away.

He starts to cry. He is so happy to see her. He thought he might never see her again, but here he is, looking at her.

He pulls the chair next to the bed, so he can be as close as possible to her. He is too frightened to touch her. This feels like a dream and he doesn't want to wake up.

He will sit here until she wakes. However long that takes.

A/N: Yea! Back together! Well, he's back with her. She's not all there, but hopefully that's just for a bit.
