Hello guys! Heres chapter two!
CHAPTER TWO - Don't Do It
The sky was pure black with distant dots of light flashing.
All the gladers were gathered.
The oldest gladers had drinks in hand and ready.
Eight torches touched each other.
Then, the eight torches backed away and surrounded a bunch of wood and bones in the middle.
Bobby, Luna, Luke, Aazay, Sully, Nick and two more had the torches in hand in a throwing position.
"LIGHT EM' UP!" Bobby yelled.
The eight threw the torches on the wood and bones and lit them up.
Everyone was clapping and celebrating.
The fire was reminiscent of a birthday cake. You light it up, and then you enjoy it.
Everyone started chanting "Light it up!" over and over celebrating the arrival of the new greenie and the supplies.
The white haired boy watches all of this in silence. He thought to himself if he was going to live here for the rest of his life. If this was his new family.
Bobby cheerfully walked away from the fire and walked over towards two kids.
A girl with brown hair, a pony tail and a yellow sweater and a boy with a blue shirt and curly brown hair were sitting down by a log.
"Hey, you two." Bobby said.
"Hey, Bobby." The boy said.
"Mind hanging out with the greenie. Maybe tell him some things about ourselves?" Bobby asked.
"Sure thing Bobby. I'll make sure he'll have an a-blazing time!" The girl chuckled.
"Sweet. I'll bring him over." Bobby said.
Bobby approached the white haired boy, who was sitting by himself.
"Hey, greenie. Follow me." Bobby said.
The boy looked up, confused by the sudden comment.
"Wanna introduce you to some people. And make you some friends." Bobby said.
The boy slowly got up and followed him.
The two approached the other two by the log.
"Greenie, this is Luan and Benny. They're gonna hang out with you for a bit." Bobby said before patting the boy on the back.
"Pleased to meet ya. I'm Luan!" Luan said while chuckling.
"And I am Benny!" Benny said with a smile.
"Hey." The boy said.
"Come sit down." Luan said.
The boy sat in between the two with Luan on his left and Benny on his right.
"I have some sunflower seeds. Want some?" Luan asked.
"Sure, I guess." The boy said.
Luan handed over some seeds to him.
The white haired boy started to eat some.
"Heck of a first day greenie." Benny said. "I saw what happened earlier with Sully."
"Yeah, he's an asshole." The boy said.
"Woah. He definitely came out of his shell right there. Get it?" Luan said.
"Huh?" The boy asked.
"It's just a joke. Trust me, when I say she cracks jokes a lot. It's an understatement." Benny said.
"You know, Sully isn't that bad. He saved your life today." Luan said.
"How. How did he save my life? I wasn't going in there. I was just looking at it." The boy said.
"If that's the case, still. He's not that bad. At least he was trying to save your life." Luan said.
"I guess." The boy said.
The three sat in silence for a few seconds.
"Heard you're gonna be a gardener." Benny said.
The boy didn't reply to that comment.
"We're trapped here, aren't we?" The boy asked.
The two looked at him.
"For the moment." Benny said. "But, you see those guys, over there by the fire?"
The three looked back towards them.
"Those are the runners. And that girl in the middle there, that's Lynn. She's the keeper of the runners. She may be young but she's ten times as tough then about half of the boys here. And she's amazingly fast." Benny said.
"More like a-maze-ingly fast! Get it?" Luan said while laughing.
"Yeah, I get it." The boy said.
"Anyways, every morning, when those doors open, they run into the maze. Mapping, memorizing, trying to find a way out." Benny said.
"How long have they been looking?" The boy asked.
"Five years." Benny said.
The boy was taken back by this answer.
"And they haven't found anything?" The boy asked.
"It's not easier said than done." Luan said.
The three looked back at the doors.
"Listen." Benny said.
The boy listened to what seemed like a sound of a boulder rubbing against another boulder.
"Here that?" Benny said.
"Yeah." The boy said.
"That's the maze, changing. It changes every night." Benny said.
"How's that even possible?" The boy asked.
"You can ask the people who put us in here if we ever meet them." Luan said.
The three kept looking at the doors.
"Listen, the truth is, the runners are the only ones who really know what's out there. They're the strongest and the fastest of us all and it's a good thing too, because if they don't make it back before those doors close, then they are stuck out there for the night….and no one has ever survived a night in the maze." Benny said.
The boy turned his head and looked at Benny.
"What happens to them?" The boy asked.
Luan ate some more seeds before speaking.
"We call them grievers." Luan said.
The boy's attention was now on Luan.
"Of course no one has ever seen one and lived to tell about it. But they're out there." Luan said.
The three sat in silence after this.
Then Benny spoke.
"Alright, well, that's enough depressing things to think about for one night. Listen, you're supposed to be the guest of honor. Let us show you around a bit." Benny said.
"Uhm...okay…" The boy said.
The three got up.
"Where should we show him first?" Luan asked.
Benny turned towards the white haired boy.
"Are you hungry?" Benny asked.
"Yeah, I'm starving." The boy said.
"Alright, follow me." Benny said.
The three of them headed towards the kitchen. The boy looked to his right and saw a kid who looked to be around his age getting thrown to the ground by another kid who looked similar to his age as well and had a tank top and brown hair that slicked back. They were also surrounded by a large group of gladers watching them.
The boy looked away and walked some more.
The boy, Benny and Luan approached the kitchen.
The three saw Aazay, Chandler and Matias standing outside the kitchen eating.
"Hey guys." Benny said.
"Hi, Benny." Aazay said.
Chandler looked over and saw the white haired boy he made fun of earlier.
The boy looked at him.
Chandler then put down his corn on a cob and approached him.
"Hey, greenie. Sorry about calling you a sheep. It was just joke words, I didn't mean it. I wanna make an apology handshake." Chandler said as he lent out his hand.
The boy was hesitant but eventually shook his hand.
"Name's Chandler." Chandler said.
"Hi...Chandler." The boy said.
"Where's Nick?" Benny asked.
"In the kitchen." Matias said.
Benny turned towards the kitchen and yelled.
"Nick!" Benny yelled.
A tall teen boy with light skin and a backwards orange cap walked outside from the kitchen.
"Show the greenie what Bacon tastes like." Benny said.
Nick grabbed a piece of bacon from the pot and tossed it towards him.
The boy swiftly caught it.
The boy took a bite.
"This...this is...delicious!" The boy said as he continued enjoying the bacon.
Nick smiled.
"Eat up, greenie. You'll need your strength in those fields tomorrow." Nick said.
Luan looked at Benny.
"Hey, Imma go and watch the fight. You keep showing him around. It's just getting interesting." Luan said.
Benny nodded.
"Keep cooking good Nick!" Benny said as the two walked away.
The boy kept taking small bites from the bacon as they walked away.
"See? The greenie likes the pork!" Nick said.
"He probably did that to be nice." Aazay said.
"Yo man, my pork is always tender." Nick said.
Nick, Aazay, Chandler and Matias shared a laugh.
"I don't really know much about gardening." The boy said to Benny.
"It's alright. We think it's best for the newbies to try a hand at everything until we decide what they're best at." Benny replied.
The two continued to walk around.
Benny then pointed to a group of people.
"Over there, we got the Builders. Really good with their hands. Help build the buildings or re-patch things that break. Sully's the keeper of them." Benny said.
The boy looked at them. He noticed how some were muscular and others weren't.
Benny then tapped his shoulder and pointed to another group of people.
"And then we got Jordan, she's the keeper of the care-takers. Most of us call her Girl Jordan. Care-takers are responsible for watching or helping anyone with a disability or long term injury. Like Hassan over there. He came up in The Box with a wheelchair." Benny said.
The boy took a look at that group.
Then Benny spoke.
"And then we have our two Med-Jacks, Carol and Francisco. They heal wounds and treat injuries. They're hanging out with the slicers over there. Aazay is the keeper of the slicers." Benny said.
"Okay, any other jobs?" The boy asked.
"There's the guardians over there. You already met Luke and Luna. Guardians act as the guards of some sort. Everytime a greenie comes up. They handle them. Even if Aazay is the keeper of the slicers, they are under command by him." Benny explained.
"Of course you already know about the Runners, Gardeners and Cooks. But we also have sloppers. They are the ones who can't do anything so we task them to clean things like the dishes." Benny said.
"What if I want to be a runner?" The boy asked.
"You can't ask me that question. You ask Bobby, Lori or Lynn. Besides, you have to prove yourself worthy of one." Benny said.
Suddenly a body was pushed into the white haired boy, almost knocking him into a fire nearby.
It was the two that were fighting earlier.
The boy with brown, slick back hair helped up the other kid with the blue sweater.
The boy with brown, slick back hair looked at the white haired boy.
"What do you say, greenie? Wanna see what you're made of?" The boy with slick back hair said.
Francisco, one of the Med-Jacks, looked at the greenie.
He then started chanting "greenie" over and over.
Soon enough, the rest of the gladers join in on the chant.
The gladers surrounding the circle of sand to which they were both standing started cheering and clapping.
The boy didn't know why. He never agreed to it, but he wanted to be a runner. So he has to show the rest he's strong.
"I'm Michael. Now let me tell you the rules." Michael said.
"I try to push you out of the circle, and try to last more than five seconds." Michael said jokingly.
Everyone laughed at this.
"Ready?" Michael asked.
"Ye-" The boy was cut off after Michael shoved him into Chandler, a girl with brown hair and a boy with square glasses.
The three threw him back towards Michael.
Michael then held his leg out causing the white haired boy to fall.
The white haired boy turned around and saw Michael.
"Come on greenie. We're not done yet." Michael said.
"Get up greenie, show us what you got!" A boy said.
"Come on greenie!" Luke said.
The white haired boy got up.
"Stop calling me greenie." The boy said.
Everyone oohed at this.
"Stop calling you greenie? What do you wanna be called? Weenie?" Michael said jokingly.
Everyone laughed at this.
The white haired boy rushed at Michael.
Michael grabbed the boy and swung him around a bit before letting go, causing him to fall again.
Michael backed away.
"You know what? I think I settled on weenie." Michael said jokingly.
This got even more laughs from the crowd.
The white haired boy rushed at him again and cupped his hands around Michael's back.
Michael pushed forward.
The white haired boy suddenly let go and went behind Michael and shoved him to the ground.
The gladers watching went crazy.
"Not bad for a greenie hu-" the boy was cut off after Michael instantly got back up and swung his feet. Causing the boy to fall and hit his head hard on the sand.
Everyone stopped talking and went silent.
The white haired boy's eyes widened. He lifted his head up slowly and said something.
"Lincoln."
The white haired boy got up quickly and said it again.
"Lincoln….Lincoln...I remember my name...I'm Lincoln!"
Everyone stared at him silently. Until a voice was heard.
"LINCOLN!" Bobby yelled cheerfully.
Everyone else joined in and congratulated him. They surrounded him. Then Nick approached him.
"Welcome home Lincoln." Nick said with a smile, handing him another piece of bacon.
Lincoln smiled.
Then Michael approached him.
"Good job, Lincoln." Michael said while lending his hand out for a shake.
Lincoln shook his hand.
Then a large scream was heard in the distance.
Everyone stopped and looked at the maze doors where it came from.
Everyone was completely silent.
Then Lincoln spoke up.
"What the hell was that?" Lincoln asked.
"That my friend was a griever." Michael answered. "Don't worry. You're safe here with us. Nothing gets beyond those walls."
Lincoln nodded.
"Alright, let's tuck it in for tonight. Everyone get to sleep. We work 6 hours in." Bobby said.
Everyone nodded and started to disperse in different directions.
"Good job, Lincoln." Luke said as he patted his shoulder before walking away.
"Did great!" Sam said as she also walked away.
Lincoln breathed. Now realizing this his family. His only family.
Lincoln laid on his hammock. Clyde was snoring next to him.
Lincoln thought about what happened today. He woke up, in a rusty box, people surrounding him and calling him names. Laughing at him, teasing him. Then by the night, he felt like they were his family for years.
He still had several questions unanswered. Why is he here? Who put them here? What's in the maze?
Lincoln wanted to ask these questions right now but Clyde was asleep.
With this thought. He closed his eyes and drifted in a deep sleep.
A hand covered Lincoln's mouth roughly.
Lincoln's eyes shot open.
He saw Bobby standing above him.
He had his finger pressed against his lips.
"Shhhh" Bobby said quietly.
Bobby then took his hands off his mouth.
"Follow me." Bobby said before walking away.
Lincoln was confused, but he got up anyway and followed Bobby.
The two walked in the bright ray of sun towards the wall.
This entire time, Bobby didn't say a single word. Neither did Lincoln.
Lincoln noticed Bobby was holding a knife in his hand.
Lincoln looked at him worryingly after seeing this.
As they nearly approached the wall. Bobby turned towards Lincoln.
"It's peaceful isn't it?" Bobby said.
Lincoln turned around and took a look at the glade. The grass, the trees, the bright sun and blue sky had him in awe.
Bobby then walked up next to him.
"You know, it's hard to believe it, but it wasn't always this way." Bobby said.
Lincoln turned towards Bobby.
"We had dark days...lost gladers to fear...to panic….but we've come far since then." Bobby explained.
Lincoln listened.
"We established order. Made peace." Bobby said.
Lincoln was silent.
"You might be wondering why I brought you out here…" Bobby said.
"Yeah." Lincoln replied.
"You're one of us now. You need to know what that means." Bobby said.
Bobby took the knife and placed it in Lincoln's hands and closed them.
Bobby then pointed to a wall.
Lincoln looked over and saw what Bobby was pointing to.
It was a wall. With names carved into it.
Lincoln approached the wall slowly and looked at all the names.
He then noticed four names were crossed out.
"What happened to them?" Lincoln asked.
Bobby turned towards him.
"Like I said...dark days, Lincoln." Bobby said.
Lincoln got closer to the wall. He looked for an empty space.
He kneeled down and found a space for his name.
He placed the knife against the stone wall and began carving his name in.
Lincoln was working in the gardens with Luan, Benny and Kaitlin.
"Alright, so all you have to do is pick those tomatoes carefully. Don't squeeze them too hard." Kaitlin said.
Lincoln was picking tomatoes gently before speaking.
"Did anyone try climbing to the top?" Lincoln asked.
"Tried it several times. We'd get cuts from the vines or it was just impossible. We lost one due to it. Her name was Hannah. She was only fifteen. She was only here for a week...before she tried escaping by climbing. We told her it was no use, but she didn't listen. Ended up slipping off and...you know." Kaitlin explained. "We don't like to talk about those times."
"What about the box? You know, next time it comes up you jump in and maybe it'll take you back down." Lincoln suggested.
"We already tried that Lincoln. Box doesn't go back down if someone is in it." Benny said.
"Lincoln, some of us have been here for 3 years. We have tried things that are so unusual, it's nothing to joke about. The only way out of here is through the maze." Luan explained.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hit a point." Lincoln said.
"It's fine, Lincoln." Kaitlin said.
"I need some fertilizer. Anyone got some?" Benny asked.
"Nah, we ran out." Kaitlin said. "Hey, kid, mind fetching us some more fertilizer? It's in the back of the woods in a small shack. You'll find it. Just head west starting from the front point over there."
Kaitlin handed Lincoln a wooden bucket and a small shovel.
Lincoln nodded and headed out in the woods.
As Lincoln walked, he took a good look in the forest. The sounds of birds filled the forest. Lady bugs and spiders crawled on logs. Leaves swaying side to side from the wind. The sounds of leaves brushing against each other. The sun lighting the forest up.
Lincoln walked, trying to locate the fertilizer shack.
Lincoln kept enjoying the nature surrounding him. Looking at trees and flowers among. He then spotted a blue bird on a tree. He stared at it, admiring it's color. The bird then flew off, Lincoln's eyes still on it. While following the bird with his eyes, he saw a shape in the distance. Lincoln was assuming this was the fertilizer shack. He continued walking until he got closer.
The closer he got, the more he realized this wasn't the shack. It looked like a grave.
Lincoln approached the grave and kneeled next to it. He put down the bucket and shovel and read the name.
It said "Stevi".
Lincoln didn't know who this Stevi guy was, but he remembered seeing his name crossed out on the wall.
Suddenly, a twig cracking was heard from behind Lincoln.
Lincoln turned around instantly.
What he saw was a boy.
He was holding a knife and his shirt had a bloody hole on it.
His eyes were blue. Almost completely blue.
He was breathing hard.
Lincoln recognized him. He remembered him from yesterday. It was that Miguel guy Clyde was talking to.
Lincoln then realized he looked terrible.
"Hey...uhm, Miguel right? Are you okay? You have blood on your shirt." Lincoln said.
Miguel kept quiet.
Lincoln noticed the angry expression on his face. He was breathing louder.
Noticing this, he felt uncomfortable.
"Uhm...yeah...okay. I'm gonna go now." Lincoln said as he walked away from him.
Lincoln kept his eyes on him as he walked back. But then he soon realized, every time he walked one step back, Miguel walked one step forward.
"Hey man, can you please stop. It's freaking me out." Lincoln said with a scared voice.
Miguel breathed louder and louder until charging at Lincoln with the knife.
Miguel tackled Lincoln to the ground.
Lincoln yelled as this happened.
Miguel held the knife against his neck.
"You….you….will stop killing my friends." Miguel said with anger.
Lincoln was confused and scared at the same time. The thought of this man of pure anger can slit his throat at any moment.
"Wh...what are you..talking about?" Lincoln asked.
"DON'T LIE TO ME YOU FUCKING CUNT! I WILL SLIT YOUR FUCKING THROAT IF YOU DON'T STOP KILLING MY FRIENDS!" Miguel said angrily.
"Okay! Okay! I'll stop killing your friends!" Lincoln said, hoping to calm him down.
"No! You...you..FUCKING LIAR!" Miguel said.
Miguel started rambling off as he held the knife against Lincoln's neck.
Lincoln jolted his eyes to his left, noticing the shovel he dropped earlier.
Lincoln breathed quietly and he quickly grabbed the shovel and slammed it against his head, causing him to fall and drop the knife.
Lincoln got up quickly and started running away. Miguel also got up quickly and started chasing him.
"COME BACK!" Miguel screamed.
Lincoln kept running back, trying to find help.
Lincoln then came across a slope. Miguel comes from behind and tackles Lincoln down the slope. They both fall down and land on the ground.
Lincoln slowly tries to get up but Miguel comes from behind and grabs his arm, biting into it.
Lincoln screams from the pain before poking Miguel's eye with his other hand.
Lincoln manages to break free and keeps running, this time in pain.
Miguel gains chase with him again.
Lincoln keeps running until he spots the glade.
He starts yelling for help.
"HEY! HELP! HELP ME!" Lincoln said while running from the woods.
Miguel comes from behind instantly and tackles him to the ground cupping his hands around his neck.
The gladers see this and run over to the chaos.
"I'LL KILL YOU!" Miguel screamed.
Lincoln was trying to break free.
Bobby, Aazay, Luna, Nick, Luke, Sully, Benny, Luan, Carol and Francisco ran over.
Luna grabbed her spear mid-run. Knowing she had to act quickly, she smacked Miguel off of Lincoln, causing a gash on his right cheek.
Lincoln got up.
Aazay, Sully, Nick, Luke, Luna, Carol and Francisco held him down.
Clyde, Benny, Kaitlin, Lori, Lynn, Sam and the rest ran over to see the situation.
Miguel was trying to escape but couldn't manage.
"Lincoln! What happened!" Clyde said as he approached Lincoln.
"He just attacked me!" Lincoln yelled.
"Are you okay?" Clyde asked.
"He bit me." Lincoln said, revealing the bloody teeth marks on his arm.
Bobby took a look at Miguel, and noticed how blue his eyes were. Bobby's eyes widened as he spotted the blood mark on his shirt.
Bobby pointed to it.
"Lift the shirt. Lift the shirt!" Bobby said.
Francisco grabbed the shirt and lifted it, revealing a veiny, sting mark. It was purple, blue and red.
Everyone leaned back in disgust.
Sully then spoke.
"He's been stung…" Sully said.
"Stung by what?" Lincoln asked.
"Griever." Carol replied.
Everyone looked at each other worryingly.
Bobby backed away before speaking.
"Put him in the pit." Bobby said.
"NO! NO! NO! PLEASE! NO! NO!" Miguel yelled.
Luna, Luke, Aazay, Nick and Sully picked him up and started carrying him over towards the pit.
Carol and Francisco approached Lincoln.
"Come on, we'll get that fixed." Carol said.
Carol and Francisco walked away. Lincoln and Clyde walked behind them soon after with Lincoln in pain.
Lincoln, Clyde, Carol and Francisco approached a table.
"Lincoln, stay here. I'm going to grab some things to help. Clyde watch him." Carol said.
"Okay." Clyde replied.
Clyde sat down next to Lincoln on the table.
"You're gonna be fine. If it was urgent, Francisco would've been frizzy." Clyde said.
"It hurts though." Lincoln said.
"Trust me, I've seen worse in my one month here. Just about a week before you arrived, I saw one of the builders cut his hand accidentally with a machete, the skin was just hanging off! It looked terrible. Good thing the med-jacks were able to save his hand. They never cut off limbs for no reason you know. They fix them up! Oh yeah! Lori once told me that someone accidentally-" Clyde was cut-off.
"Clyde! Please stop talking about injuries. It's making it hurt more." Lincoln said.
Clyde looked at Lincoln.
"Sorry, I just lost myself, I forgot you had an injury yourself." Clyde said.
"It's okay." Lincoln said.
Lincoln looked over and saw Carol and Francisco walking over.
Lincoln noticed Carol had an odd green stripe on her blonde hair. He assumed she was also one of the ones with odd hair like himself.
"Alright, this should help." Carol said.
In her hand was a piece of aloe vera.
In her other hand was a wooden cup, inside it was water.
"Here, drink up, and try to relax." Carol said while handing Lincoln the cup.
Lincoln sipped into it and felt refreshed.
Carol slowly pressed the aloe vera against Lincoln's wound.
Francisco slowly walked over and sat down next to them.
"We may have to amputate it." Francisco said with a straight face.
Lincoln looked at Francisco before looking back at Clyde with an upset face.
Clyde smirked and slightly chuckled.
Carol looked up at Francisco with an upset look.
"Give me the bandage, and stop talking." Carol said.
Francisco handed Carol the bandage.
Carol then proceeded to wrap up the wound.
"Alright, you should be fine. If you feel any sharp pains randomly, let me know." Carol said.
"Try not to get it infected. Or we may have to chop it off." Francisco said.
Lincoln nodded.
Carol hit Francisco in the shoulder as they walked away.
Bobby then came up to them.
"Just got Miguel in the pit." Bobby said.
Lincoln and Clyde both looked up at him.
"You holding up?" Bobby asked.
"Yeah, it just hurts a bit." Lincoln said.
"I know it's a lot to take in since it's your first week in all this." Bobby said.
"He said I killed his friends. I didn't know what he meant by it." Lincoln said.
Bobby sat down next to him.
"We call it the changing." Bobby said.
"What's that?" Lincoln asked.
"If someone is stung by a griever, they have a low chance of becoming insane...like Miguel did. They go crazy, say things that don't make sense. We had someone with a situation like this before. Attacked us after coming back from the maze...we had to banish him."
Lincoln looked at Bobby with widened eyes.
"If you don't come back insane, you die." Bobby explained.
Lincoln looked down at the floor.
He then looked back up towards Bobby.
"What's gonna happen to him?" Lincoln asked.
Bobby was silent while staring at him.
Miguel was screaming and banging on the wooden gate in the pit.
Luna and Luke were watching over him.
Miguel kept trying to escape, but to no avail.
Luke looked over and stared at him.
"Me and him were just chatting the other day. Talking about the maze. Now seeing him like this. It's fucking horrible man." Luke said to Luna.
"Just stop staring at him dude. You know what we have to do. Are you in or out? If you can't handle it ju-" Luna was cut off by Luke.
"I'm in." Luke said with confidence.
Luke took a deep breath.
Aazay walked over.
"He's tied up?" Aazay asked.
"Yeah." Luna replied.
"Okay, the others are ready. Doors about to close. Luke, you up for it?" Aazay asked.
"Yes. Let's go." Luke said.
Luna opened the gate to the pit.
The three leaned in and looked at Miguel.
"Ready...three...two….one!" Aazay said before the three leaned in and pulled him out.
Miguel was shaking around and screaming.
Aazay, Luna and Luke dragged him over towards the doors where everyone was gathered.
Nick was carrying what seemed to be a bunch of manmade pushers.
Lincoln walked up as they did and watched them drop Miguel on the ground in the middle.
Clyde also walked up.
Lincoln noticed that the gladers surrounding them had spears pointed at him.
Lincoln's heart dropped as he realized what they were about to do.
Luna and Luke backed away and grabbed a pusher from Nick.
Aazay grabbed a knife from his pocket and cut the tie.
Miguel was sobbing, spitting out blood slowly. His eyes still blue.
"No….no...no..please...please don't….please don't do it…" Miguel said while sobbing.
Aazay looked at Bobby, who was with the pushers.
Bobby nodded slowly.
Aazay grabbed Miguel's supplies and threw them into the maze.
Aazay then walked away and grabbed a pusher.
The big gust of wind came blowing from the maze.
The gladers to the left and right of him held their spears.
Bobby then adjusted his hands on his pusher.
"NOW!" Bobby said as he, Aazay, Luna, Luke, Lori and Nick lowered the pushers to face Miguel.
Miguel turned around, still on the ground and was looking at the pushers.
The sound of the doors closing was the death bell for him.
"MOVE IN!" Bobby yelled.
Miguel got up and started trying to escape.
Clyde walked away, not wanting to watch.
Lincoln kept his eyes on the event. He noticed how much more veiny his face was now.
The pushers kept pushing him further into the maze.
Miguel realizing there's nowhere to go, he walks into the maze.
"No..noo..nooo….NOOOO!" Miguel said as the doors shut.
After the sounds of the doors pressing against each other were heard. Everyone was completely silent.
For about two minutes, not a single word was spoken. Everyone was just staring at the floor.
Bobby then looked up and spoke.
"He belongs in the maze now." Bobby said.
Everyone looked at him.
Bobby looked back down and walked away.
He was soon followed by everyone.
They were all slowly walking.
Lincoln was still looking at the doors in horror of what he just witnessed.
Night hit.
Sully had a knife in his hand.
He walked up to the wall with a torch and started carving a line into Miguel's name.
Lincoln watched this from his hammock.
Clyde was next to him swinging slowly on his.
"Do you think he'll survive out there?" Lincoln asked.
"...No….no one survives a night in the maze." Clyde said slowly. "We just have to try and forget about him."
Lincoln kept looking at the maze doors.
"We should get to sleep." Clyde said.
Lincoln looked at Clyde before laying back and drifting into a deep sleep. But not a peaceful one.
Lincoln's eyes shot open as the sound of Clyde's hammock falling went through his ears.
"Ow!" Clyde said.
"You alright?" Lincoln whispered.
"Yeah, it'll take me a couple minutes to get this back up, but I'm okay." Clyde said.
Lincoln looked to his right towards the doors.
Lincoln saw three people by the doors, looking ready to run in.
Lincoln looked closer and saw that it was Lynn and Bobby. A third girl with blonde hair and a blue stripe.
Lincoln's head jolted diagonally in confusion.
Lynn, Bobby and the third girl ran into the maze.
Lincoln stared at the doors.
Work period had started.
Lincoln, Clyde, Jordan and Chandler were tasked to remove a tree stump.
Chandler was hitting the bottom of the tree with a shovel while Jordan was hitting the side of the tree with a machete.
Lincoln and Clyde were sitting on a log nearby.
"We can use some help here." Jordan said.
Lincoln looked up and saw her staring at him, she had sweat all over her face.
"Why would Bobby go into the maze? He's not a runner." Lincoln asked.
"Aazay told us he, Sam and Lynn went to go retrace Miguels's footsteps before sundown. Look, are you gonna help?" Jordan said.
"So, they're just gonna go back to where Miguel was just stung?" Lincoln said.
"Bobby knows what he's doing, alright? He knows better than any of us." Jordan said.
"What does that mean?" Lincoln asked.
Jordan stopped chopping the tree and looked at Lincoln.
"Alright, it's like you heard. Every month, the box sends up a new arrival. Someone had to be first. Someone had to spend a whole month here alone...and that was Bobby." Jordan said.
Lincoln stared at them.
"I mean, it can't have been easy. But once those other boys and girls started coming up from the box, one after another, he saw the truth. And he learned that the most important thing is that we all have each other and that we are all in this together." Jordan said.
Chandler and Jordan continued to chop the tree stump.
Lincoln grabbed a machete and walked over towards the tree stump.
Lincoln aimed the machete at the bottom of the tree stump and swung down on it, he then pulled it out and swung down again.
"Yeah! There you go greenie!" Chandler said.
Lincoln kept chopping the tree stump with Chandler and Jordan.
Chandler then looked over at Lincoln.
"Don't worry greenie. They'll be back before lunch is served." Chandler said.
Lincoln nodded before the three continued to stab the tree stump.
Lunch had arrived.
A line of hungry gladers was among the kitchen.
"Can't use the tables today! Builders are still stabilizing them!" Nick said from the kitchen.
A boy with square glasses and brown hair was first in line.
Nick had prepared stew.
Lincoln was standing behind the boy.
The boy held out his metal bowl towards Nick.
Nick grabbed the stew and poured it onto the boy's plate.
The boy lifted it up and looked at it.
He made a disgusted face.
He then looked back up at Nick.
"You're slipping Nick." The boy with square glasses said.
"You think you could do any better Trent? Next!" Nick said annoyingly.
Trent walked away and Lincoln approached Nick with his metal bowl.
"Bobby and Lynn aren't back yet?" Lincoln asked.
"Nope. More for the rest of us. They're missing out on some great stew." Nick said.
Nick poured stew into his bowl. Lincoln looked at it. He didn't know what Trent was talking about. It looked delicious.
"Next." Nick said.
Lincoln walked away.
A girl with brown hair approached the kitchen.
She held out her metal bowl.
Nick poured stew onto it.
"Thanks Nick." The girl said before walking away.
"Welcome, Mollie." Nick said before Chandler approached.
Chandler lended out his bowl and Nick poured stew on it.
Chandler walked away.
Drops of rain started to fall from the sky.
"Sorry guys! We'll eat lunch later! Can't get the stew ruined!" Nick said before walking back into the kitchen with the stew.
The gladers in line groaned before jogging to cover from the rain.
Lincoln was sheltered under some wood with a few others.
Lincoln looked over and noticed Luna standing with her back against a wooden beam. Her arms and legs were crossed and she was staring into the distance.
Lincoln got up and approached her.
Luna looked over to see Lincoln walking over.
"Sup dude." Luna said.
"I have a question." Lincoln said.
"What's the question?" Luna asked.
"Is Sam a runner?" Lincoln asked.
"No...she only went in because she used to be. The other runners don't go in til' tomorrow." Luna said.
Lincoln was silent before speaking up again.
"Do you think they're gonna make it back? I noticed you were staring at the doors." Lincoln asked.
Luna sighed and looked back at the doors.
"They're gonna make it." Luna said.
"What happens if they don't?" Lincoln asked.
Luna looked back down at Lincoln.
"They're gonna make it." Luna said.
Lincoln and Luna both looked at the doors.
The rain stopped.
It's been hours since the three went into the maze.
All the gladers were standing in front of the doors. Waiting for the three to come back.
They were all in silence looking into the maze.
The sound of the doors went through everyone's ears. Signaling the doors are about to close.
Lincoln was standing in the front of the crowd.
Lincoln became progressively worried.
"Come on guys, can't we send someone after them?" Lincoln asked.
"It's against the rules. They only make it back or they don't." Sully said from Lincoln's left.
"Can't risk losing anyone else." Aazay said from behind.
The big gust of wind came from the maze and everyone covered their faces.
The doors then slowly started to close.
"Oh no." Clyde said.
Lincoln looked into the maze and saw Lynn and Sam.
"There!" Lincoln shouted.
Lynn and Sam were groaning. It looked like they were pulling something.
Lincoln looked closer and saw that they were pulling a body. The body of Bobby.
Everyone was confused. The doors were still slowly closing.
Clyde then looked at them and shouted.
"COME ON GUYS! YOU CAN DO IT!" Clyde yelled.
Everyone else joined in on telling the hurry.
Luke looked in the maze, not wanting what happened to Miguel, to happen to them.
"Shit! They're not gonna make it!" Luke said as he pushed everyone in front of him out of the way and ran inside the maze to help.
"Luke no!" Luna screamed.
The doors were still closing.
Everyone kept shouting as Lincoln silently watched the three struggle to carry Bobby back, the doors were only 3 feet away from shutting. The sound around him went silent. His ears started ringing. He couldn't just leave them to die.
Lincoln started breathing and staring at the carnage in front of him.
Luna looked over and saw Lincoln's face.
Her eyes widened as she realized what he was about to do.
"Don't do it. Don't you do it Lincoln." Luna said.
Lincoln ignored this and charged inside the maze doors.
Luna tried grabbing him but failed.
"LINCOLN, NO!" Clyde yelled.
Lincoln kept running towards the maze. The doors were pressed against his back and head.
Lincoln was able to leap out of being crushed. Lincoln looked behind him. Realizing what he had just done. He just killed himself.
"Fuck." Lynn said.
Lincoln turned around.
"What the fuck happened to him?" Luke asked.
"He was just talking and one of them just fucking stung him!" Sam said with emotion.
Lincoln got closer to Bobby's body.
"Is...is he dead?" Lincoln asked.
Sam looked at him.
"No, he went insane and attacked me. Lynn knocked him out hard with her punch." Sam said.
"The fuck is happening?" Luke said.
Lincoln took a look at Bobby's head. He noticed he had a black eye and a gash on his forehead.
"Alright, we need to go now." Lynn said.
"Go where?" Sam asked.
"If the grievers come down here, there's no escape. We need to find a place to hide where there are many exits. We take his body, and hide it somewhere." Lynn said.
Lynn turned towards Lincoln.
"Also, why the fuck are you here? You're basically committing suicide by running in here." Lynn said.
"I'm the only one committing suicide? What about Luke! He ran in too!" Lincoln argued.
"Yeah, but there's a difference. He's a runner and you're not." Lynn finished.
"Wait, I thought he was a guardian." Lincoln said.
"I am. I'm a runner and guardian." Luke said.
"You can have two jobs?" Lincoln asked.
"Duh." Lynn said.
"Guys, can we not have this conversation here? I'm getting a bad vibe." Sam said.
"Alright, I'll grab his feet and legs, greenie grab him from his left, Luke grab him from your left and Sam grab him from the front." Lynn said.
The three nodded and picked Bobby up.
The four walked further into the maze holding their friend. No one has ever survived a night in the maze.
