S P.O.V

Sam couldn't help but stare at the platform with wizards and witches rushing around making sure their children had all they could possibly need. She looked down at her trunk and wondered if she was the only one without someone who cared for them.

She sighed and looked up to meet a pair grey eyes that seemed to hold more than what caught the eye. The boy seemed to be around her own age - probably eleven or twelve years, his platinum blond hair was sleeked back and he appeared to be hesitant about boarding the train that his mother was urging him to climb into. He finally decided to climb into the car when (presumably) one of his friends poked his head out of a window and told him to hurry. The boy checked his watch, mumbled a good bye to his parents and boarded the train.

Sam checked her own watch and realized that the train was leaving in two minutes. She cursed under her breath, two minutes to board? She quickly realized that the less time that she spent thinking the more time she would have to actually get on the train. Sam forcefully started tugging at the rather large, heavy trunk. She looked up, mentally trying to calculate the distance to the train when she felt the heavy strain of the bag lighten and looked up to find a pair of rolling eyes tugging the trunk along with her.

"You know it's okay to ask for help, I mean I think it's fine if you really want to test your muscles and want to see if you'll actually make it to the Hogwarts express. But, next time ask for help when trying to haul your bloody heavy trunk"

Sam smiled, at least the people were nice, "I will, thanks."

The girl simply grunted in response and they eventually managed to heave the bag onto the train. The girl helped Sam put her trunk above an empty seat and turned to leave,

"Wait, what's your name," Sam blurted out before she could stop herself. The girl finally cracked a smile at the nerves in the obvious first year's voice, "Jean, and before you ask, I'm a fourth year not a first year," Jean paused trying to read the younger girl's expression, before continuing when failing to do so, "You gotta be careful with what you're doing kid, but if you ever need it, I can try and help you out."

Sam grinned as the older girl, Jean, curtly nodded and walked towards her friends. She continued to smile to herself at the new, almost bizarre thought: Jean was going to be the closest thing she would get among wizards to a guardian angel.

Sam found herself outside one of the last cabins in the train with a empty seat, she was tired of hauling herself through the halls of the ever large Hogwarts Express and was completely prepared to plop down onto the empty seat, no matter the possible complaints of the other people inside the cabin. She slowly brought herself to knock and took a step back as she saw someone approach the other side of the door through the fogged up glass. She found herself face to face with the same boy she found staring at her earlier. He seemed to realize this as well, but hid his surprised expression with a carefully guarded one.

"Can I help you", he said as his grey eyes met her own hazel ones once again.

She struggled not to roll her eyes, "I just", she stammered for a second before grasping back her confidence, "Sorry, there aren't any other seats left on the train and I was wondering if your cabin had an empty seat." You did it, Sam told herself, you talked to a guy your age without sounding like a complete idiot.

"Yeah we just happen to have an empty seat, and we were also about to start a game of exploding snap if you want to play," the boy managed to make it sound courteous enough that she rolled her eyes, hiding a small smile, and pushed past him towards the empty seat by the window. Once finally comfortable, Sam looked up, examining the other people she now shared the cabin with. There was the boy with the curious grey eyes, then there were his his two friends. She noticed that both the blokes had the same towering over her height while the one sitting to her left was what she would politely describe as pudgy and the one sitting parallel to him was slightly more built. He would probably make a great rugby player, she thought, humoring herself.

Sam was pulled out of her thoughts by the grey-eyed boy from before, "Well, do you wanna play or not." he glanced at her as he repeated the former question in an obvious bored tone.

"I reckon she's just buying her time before having to lose," the before mentioned chubby bloke was obviously trying to get a run out of Sam and she wasn't planning on giving him what he wanted. She pushed down the annoyance and managed a smirk,

"Say good bye to the chocolate frogs from the trolley lads, 'cause you're about to lose a fortune"
