At the police station were practically all the commissioners already waiting for Chief Bogo to hand out their assignments for the day. In the room everyone was already waiting, the last couple to enter the room were Judy and Nick. They took their favourite seat at the front and waited for their boss to arrive. By this time Judy had managed to dry her wet leg, which she had unluckily wet outside the police station. Her embarrassment and inattention caused this unfortunate gaffe. Shortly afterwards, the door moved violently and slammed hard, it was Commander Bogo who held in his paws the catalogues that contained the data for the assignments for his police officers.
"Coyote, wolf, spy, to you falls the rainy las padas, supposedly illegal business is going on there, you are to catch and arrest these people.
Tiger and Gerpard, you guys are to patrol the area around the Zootopia national bank, there is supposed to be important cargo and there is supposed to be no conflict, you guys are to do your job" the commander communicated as he handed out directories for his officers. That left Nick and Judy.
"And for you two today falls" began Bogo opening the directory slowly with the data.
"Desert Sahara Patrol, march away" finished Bogo placing their folder in front of them. This surprised Judy terribly. This was not the task she had expected. Were they just going to sit in the car and do nothing? Her plan was that they were to capture someone, that would put her at ease for a few hours, and sitting in the same car with Nick certainly wouldn't put her at ease.
"Just that?" asked Judy, which surprised both men.
"Enjoy your carrot, we're going to spend a lot of time, just you and me," replied Nick with a laugh.
"We'll date later Wilde. Look Judy, even though you're number one you can't take on the hardest jobs all the time. Today is your day to relax" said Bogo , then left the room. It wasn't an answer that would please Judy, but she couldn't help it. That was Bogo's order.
"You know, it's better if I drive, you're kind of out of sorts today..." said Nick taking the keys from the desk to the police car.
"So, are we going?" asked Nick seeing the confused look on his partner's face.
"We have to " replied a resigned Judy leaving the rooms.
The desert Sahara was the least liked place among policemen. Anyone would have wanted to officiate anywhere other than here. The high temperature, low humidity and quite frequent sandstorms meant that pursuits here were really hard to conduct and capturing a thief was worthy of admiration. That's why a large percentage of the bad guys were hiding somewhere here, and they came out mostly at night. Judy and Nick stopped by a petrol station on the main access road to this place. It was the perfect place to catch someone speeding. The road was still straight and very even, so the drivers seemed to be on a racetrack and were trying to crank out maximum speeds with their cars here. Unfortunately, then a black and white police car came out from behind the station and had to give them a ticket.
The day was unusually quiet, which was not necessarily good for Judy, who tried not to stare at Nick every few seconds. She was still waiting for a good moment to bring up this sensitive and tender subject for both of them.
"Phew, it's awfully hot in this Sahara...I'll go buy us something," Nick said as his bottled water ran out. Judy just nodded with a motion of her head.
"Are you okay ?" asked Nick when he noticed that Judy had been acting somehow...strange since early this morning.
"Yeah, why do you ask ?"
"You've been acting like, I don't know...not talking much and all."
"It's hot in here and I'm thirsty, it's a bit weak"
"Ok, then I already know what to buy" replied Nick getting out of the car.
"Phew, that was close" thought Judy. She couldn't hide her emotions. Not from Nick. Someone else probably wouldn't have noticed, but Nick already knew the rabbit too well. After all, no wonder, they spent every day together. They were the most bonded couple on the police station. Soon Nick came in with his prey.
"Oh, Nick, did you seriously buy ice cream? As police officers we shouldn't..."
"Come on Judy, do you see anyone planning on doing anything?" asked Nick handing a chocolate ice cream into those soft little paws. Judy looked around the area, it all looked peaceful. The rabbit sighed taking the treat from the fox.
"Thank you Nick" said Judy licking the ice cream. She didn't really feel thirsty , but in such a short moment she couldn't think of anything better to say. The ice itself was very good, she couldn't complain, she licked it faster than Nick which surprised him greatly. Usually he was the one who had to rush her, when the action started she was still finishing her coffee.
"You must be pretty thirsty, why don't I jump for something else?"
"No. I mean...you don't have to, I feel fine. I'd like to talk to you," Judy began somewhat uncertainly. She decided that this was a good time to talk about it. She was ready for Nick's reaction, all she had to do was talk about it.
"Well, I was wondering, I mean, I..."
"Cobra 05 come in!"
The commander's voice came from the radio, which interrupted the conversation between Nick and Judy. This angered the rabbit, but this time he didn't show it.
"Cobra 04, this is Cobra 05, over," Nick received the report.
"One of the dealers is about to drive into the desert Sahara. He's got a red sports car, driving like crazy! You have permission to use a spike, just spread it out judiciously, the driver can't escape!"
"I understand, Cobra 05 out of commission"
"I'll talk to you later Judy" said Nick getting out of the car. He walked over to the back of the car to pull out a hand held spike and a portable speed camera.
(It was a regular spike, only it was manually unfolded).
When Judy was left alone out of anger she banged her fist on the cockpit of the car as hard as she could. She didn't even feel any pain from the emotion.
"Relax Judy, you'll talk later" thought Judy calming herself down. She got out of the car to get into the driver's seat. A car that is most likely speeding like this will not stop immediately. Nick calmly stepped out onto the road, then spread a spike across the full width of the tarmac. The trap was ready. All that was needed now was to wait for the car, which was already coming from the coast of the city. Nick took out the portable speed camera with the spike, took it out , then started to target the red car. Its roar informed that it had a pretty powerful engine sitting in it. As he drove past Nick, its four tyres burst instantly and the car skidded to the side of the road, but to Nick and Judy's surprise it kept going!
"Wow, what is this, Schumacher driving this car?" thought Nick when he noticed Judy, pointing with her hand for him to get into the car.
"Hop in!" shouted the rabbit. Nick rushed into the car, and once he was in it he excitedly showed for Judy the value the speed camera was indicating.
"Wow, 256 km/h! And he's driving on! Nice driver must be driving that vehicle" Nick said excitedly. Judy fired up the sirens and with a screech of tyres followed the trail of sparks that rose from under the damaged car.
