Chapter 1 – How it All Started

Before

Something new is in the jungle.

She knew it, not because of the chittering of the monkeys or the squawking of the birds. She knew it because she saw the flash of red and white as it crashed through the branches.

She had never seen a bird that big and that red and she immediately assumed it was something to do with the Bipeds that her mother was always telling her to stay away from. But when it finally came to a crash and seemingly deflated upon impact, she knew it wasn't a bird. And when she managed to sneak even closer to she see that there were two bipeds hanging from the gutted contraption.

She had never seen bipeds in something like that before. Something so… fragile. She had seen them in massive metal contraptions that were harder to take apart, on land, in the air, and on the sea, but this was something else.

From her vantage point in the trees she watched the progress. The smaller of the two bipeds came down first, it looked like the Kelly she had met, except this one was different. Its skin wasn't the same color, the fur was a different color and length, the second skin was a different color too.

Out in the jungle she heard the bray of her mother.

UNA!

Oh! How long had she been gone? She sounded her own call so her mother knew that she was fine.

Where are you!

She glanced back to see that the new Kelly was searching the bushes, trying to establish what the sounds were and where they were coming from. She moved from her branch down to the bushes so he wouldn't be able to see her before she answered her mother's calls for her.

By the stream. I found new bipeds.

That was the wrong things to say.

The last time she had met bipeds it had not been a good time for anyone involved. Granted she had met four very nice bipeds but the rest were all mean and terrible to her who put her in a cage and poked her with a lightning stick. Her pack had eventually saved her from them but since then they went on high alert whenever a biped was spotted.

So, the second she said that she had found bipeds they were converging on her position and fast. She didn't even get a chance to warn them. Her mother burst out of the bushes first, startling the new Kelly who tumbled into the bushes closest to where she was crouching.

She had a better look at this new biped. It didn't seem anything like the Kelly or the Sarah she had met which had been like her. This one seemed more like a hatchling version the Ian or the Nick. Was this… was this a boy?

The biped in the tree looked more like a Nick was not so lucky. He was helplessly caught he was struggling to get out of the bindings he was trapped in but by then the rest of the pack had arrived and she knew that he wasn't going to get away.

And with this new male Kelly so close he was probably going to be next. She had never met a boy biped before, not one her age, and she so desperately didn't want her mom to eat the only boy she had ever met.

So, as her pack descended on the helplessly caught biped, she darted forward and grabbed the new Kelly and tugged him into the jungle. Making sure to hold onto him tight as she dragged him away from the death cries of the biped he had fallen with.

She didn't know it then but she was about to change her life.

Now

Eric left his family and friends on the safety of the coast and walked into the jungle. To think, ten years ago he had been on this island fighting for his life

He had accomplished a lot and lied to a lot of people to get there. He had done two degrees at once. One was for paleontology so he knew all about dinosaurs and then he did a veterinarian degree specializing in reptilians and birds so that he'd know how to help dinosaurs. Then he took a photography degree, learned all about electrical maintenance and IT and everything course he could to learn about how to live in the wild.

Then he went straight to the lying.

He told the Ingen people that his interest was to go to the island and learn more about the dinosaurs living there. He wanted to live on the island, he'd give them monthly updates, and he didn't even want money, not a lot anyway. It would have looked weird if he hadn't asked for some money and he didn't want them to be suspicious of his motives.

Because at no point did he tell them the real reason why he wanted to go back to that island.

But the Ingen people ate it up and after two years of prep he was finally heading back into the jungle that had taken 8 weeks from his life and still had a hold of his heart.

He was totally going to do everything he promised for Ingen but the real reason he was coming back to Isla Sorna was for Una.

He knew he couldn't tell anyone about her. A girl raised by dinosaurs would be a hot commodity and he wasn't about to lose her to government experiments.

He wasn't even certain she was alive. It was just a hope. A little candle flickering in his heart. A dream he held onto. He figured, if she were alive, he'd be able to find her, and if not, he'd either die on that island or find her body and go home.

The first sign that something was following him was when the jungle around him went quiet. The monkeys were no longer chittering, the birds had flown away. Eric stopped, stopped and listened. He edged closer to the trees, wondering if he needed to climb up them to escape an oncoming predator. But he didn't have to worry.

She dropped from the trees, like she had always been prone to doing and Eric stumbled back because he hadn't been expecting it. She had that look about her, the one that he knew was a curious move. She didn't recognize him and he that shouldn't have surprised him. It had been ten years since he had seen her last.

But part of him had wanted her to recognize him right away and be happy that he had come back to her.

While she was looking him up and down, he did the same.

She was taller now. Her breasts had gotten bigger but not by much. Her skin was still tanned and striped with white scars, the number of which had gotten larger since he had last seen her. She was in a similar get up from when he last saw her too. Not done up right shorts that were being held up by twine and vines and left-over cording that wrapped around her shoulders and chest. The scraps of fabric around her chest were still practically barren, hardly covering anything. She was still using mud and jungle to camouflage herself and her hair was badly shorn and recently, which meant she was still using that machete to cut it herself.

Somehow, he still found her as beautiful as when he first met her.

"Hello Una."

She took a step back blinking her eyes. She crouched down in a defensive stance doing that swivel thing with her head that her pack had taught her.

"It's me Una. It's Eric."

For a brief moment he wondered if she had forgotten to talk. With no one to practice with he wouldn't have been surprised if she had forgotten everything he had taught her, but once he said his name she stood again.

"Eric?" she echoed and he smiled.

"Yeah."

She took another step forward and that time so did he. Slowly she offered a hand out and he did the same, touching his fingertips to hers just like the first time he had properly met her and she suddenly broke out into a large grin and launched herself at him.

He caught her body and pressed her close to him. When he was first here, he hadn't known what to do with a beautiful girl he fancied. He might have gotten a few kisses back then, but he was a man now and he knew exactly what to do.

So when she pulled her face out of his neck he kissed her.

It was all he'd do then, but he wasn't leaving this time and when he got a chance he was going to do everything right. But right then, at that moment, he was going to hold the girl he had loved his whole life and this time he wasn't letting go.
