Prolouge: The Fall of House Potter
James and Lily Potter were running through the forest near their home in Godric's Hollow. They had received word from Lily's oldest friend Severus Snape that Voldemort was coming for them and their child. Moments after receiving the message the wards surrounding their cottage came under attack. They then grabbed their child and fled through the back door and sought refuge in the forest behind their home.
Lily had their baby swaddled in a blanket and clung tightly in her arms. She was panting as they ran through the trees fleeing their pursuer. Behind them they could hear trees being blasted aside as Voldemort chased them deeper into the forest. "Why resist the inevitable?" a cold sickening voice called from behind them.
The two didn't stop when suddenly, a black fog suddenly appeared in front of them. When the fog cleared there stood their pursuer, Voldemort. Lily let out a quiet shriek as she recoiled from them monster before them shielding their child from him. James jumped between them, "Stay away you bastard!" he shouted.
"Come now cease this foolishness and hand over the child." The white pasty snake-like face said, "You're only postponing the inevitable by running."
"Silence we'll never surrender our child to you." James said, "Lily run!" James demanded. But before she could get more than three paces a bolt of scarlet light hit her in the back sending her flying into an ear by tree, while the babe in her arms was thrown into the air.
James looked on horrified as his wife was stunned and smashed into a tree. He rushed forward and caught the bundled child before the babe could hit the ground. James rolled as he slid across the ground being sure to land on his back to avoid harming the babe. He slowly sat up glaring at their foe. "Worry not your wife isn't dead though with her filthy muggle blood I should cleanse her from this earth. However I'll spare her. Simply hand over the babe and I'll be on my way. The child will be taken to a proper pureblood family and raised with much care I assure you." The pale face gave him a wicked sneer.
James growled, "Even if you spare my wife were I to hand over our child she'd kill me herself. Not to mention I refuse to allow you to subject my child to your twisted sense of a proper wizarding family! Be gone!" James brandished his wand and sent a azure bolt to his foe.
Voldemort shielded himself from the attack as the bolt crashed against his shield before ricocheting off. While Voldemort was distracted trying to fend of the spell James rushed over to Lily but was stopped by a spell fired at his feet. James stumbled and fell to the ground the bundled child rolling out of his arms near his unconscious wife. "Enough of this foolishness!" Voldemort hissed, "You refuse to obey then the child will die tonight! AVADA KEDAVRA!!"
Time slowed around James as he saw a jet of green light slowly moving toward the now wailing babe. James screamed as he forced himself up and ran towards his child throwing himself between the spell and the crying babe. The spell struck him dead in the chest soon the light left his eyes and James Potter fell to the ground dead.
Lily had just regained consciousness her head was ringing and she couldn't move. By sheer force of will she lifted her head only to see her husband leap between the killing curse and their crying child. She watched in horror as the curse struck her husband in his chest then his lifeless body fell to the ground in front of their baby.
"HA!" Voldemort laughed sadistically, "And so ends the Great Potter Family their last male heir now lays before me dead. HAHAHA!" he sneers before walking over to the child laying on the ground, "You are too much trouble brat…I send your mother to join you and your father in after life. He points his wand at the babe, "AVADA KEDAVRA!" the green curse fires.
Lily watches in horror as the spell approached the babe only to be shocked when the spell suddenly ricochets of the child's chest and crashes into its caster instead. She heard Voldemort wail, "NOOOOOOOOO!" there was an explosion that cause a dust cloud blocking her view. Lily forced herself up her arms shaking. She pushed herself to her knees and began sobbing.
'My husband…my child…both gone…' she thought as she began sobbing uncontrollably. Suddenly she heard a the baby begin crying. Lily snapped her head up, "My baby!" she grunted as she began crawling towards the dust cloud. She followed the babies cries in the clouded area. "Mummy's coming…hold on baby mummy's coming" she managed to croak out as she dragged herself forward by sheer will.
She found the child laying on the ground the blanket the child had be swaddled in had been ripped open and the onesie the babe was wearing had been shredded open leaving a lightening bolt shaped scar on the child's chest, "My god!" she said as she pulled her self up to a sitting position and slowly moved to pick up her child. She lifted the babe to her and held her close to her chest, "My baby!" she sobbed as she looked to her side seeing the hand of her husband…"J…James…" she whimpered tears in her eyes she scooted closer with her child in her arms. She scooted herself until she was by her husbands side.
James's body had already begun to grow cold as his eyes stared up at her lifelessly. She began to sob harder as she reached over with one hand and gently closed her husbands eye before letting out a sorrow-filled wail.
"LILY!!" She heard the voice of Sirius Black James's long time friend.
"LILY WHERE ARE YOU?!" came the voice of Severus Snape her childhood friend.
"SEVERUS! SIRIUS!" She shouted.
"Black this way I heard Lily over that way!" Severus voice called.
Lily heard rustling through the trees as the dust cloud around her began to settle she saw two men bursting out of the tree lines. Severus looked around and spotted her he ran forward to her only to freeze when he saw the body of James, "Oh god! Black, James… has fallen."
Sirius rushed over at these words. Upon seeing the lifeless body of his sworn brother Sirius crashed to his knees, "James…no….NOOOOO!" he wailed and began sobbing uncontrollably.
Lily sobbed beside him moving closer to Sirius she leaned against him and sobbed into his shoulder. Sirius turned and held her as they both sob for the fallen Potter patriarch. They sobbed hard for what felt like hours even though only a at least fifteen minutes passed. Severus stepped up behind Lily placing a hand on her shoulder, "Lily the child is your child alright?"
Lily looked up and pulled away from Sirius to show the quietly crying child pressed against her chest, "Here…Sev…take…" she tried to say but suddenly passed out before then. Severus quickly grabbed the child while Sirius caught Lily.
"Sirius we must get them to St. Mungo's immediately." Severus said, "We will come back for James, come."
Sirius shook as he brought his sorrow under control then stood with Lily in his arms. He panted before wipng his tear stained face, "Yes," he casts a charm to keep muggles away from the area then waves his wand over James' body. The ground rose around James' corpse turning to stone and enclosing his body. "I will properly lay you to rest soon my friend. Let's go Severus." He turned, "My motor bike is nearby, we can't apparate with them in this condition. I'll summon the side car you will hold them as we ride."
He rushed off carrying Lily while Severus carried the child. When they reached the cottage Sirius waved his wand and the side car for the motorbike suddenly burst out of the side of the bike, "Get in quickly." He barked. Severus took the seat with the babe as Sirius laid Lily at Severus side, "Hold on to them tightly."
Severus nods and wraps an arm around Lily whilst holding the child close to his chest. "Fly carefully." Severus tells him as Sirius whips his leg over the bike and cranks it up.
"Of course." He says as he revs the engine and the bike begins moving forward slowly before it begins to lift into the air and flies off.
Lily Potter awoke nearly two days later she stirred feeling a soft blanket on her. She opened her eyes, looking at the ceiling above her. It was unfamiliar. She then remembered everything that happened and swiftly sat up. She was met with a Medi-witch who quickly grabbed the her should, "No Mrs. Potter please lay down."
"No where…where is my baby?!" she howls.
"Lily!" Severus came up to here and grabbed her shoulders, "Lily Calm down you baby is right here." He tells her.
Lily looks to Severus side to see a bassinet beside her the child was swaddled and sleeping soundly. Lily let out a sigh of relief her body relaxing as she laid back. She looked over to Severus what happen…to James' body?" she asked.
"I have magically preserved it." Came the voice of Sirius who walked around the Medi-witch, "Once your better we'll hold a proper funeral." Sirius said frowning a tear forming in his eye.
Lily bit her lower lip pushing back tears, "Give me my baby." She said.
Severus steps back as Sirius lift the child from the bassinet and places the babe in Lily's arms. Lily held the child and began weeping quietly. "Why…why didn't the curse kill such a small child?" she said.
"That is indeed a concerning question." Came a calm smooth voice.
Everyone in the room turned their heads to see to see Albus Dumbledore standing in the doorway. "Professor Dumbledore?!" Severus said shocked, "What are you doing here?"
"I came to give my condolences." He walked forward and stood in front of Lily's bed looking down at her, "Lily dear I'm so sorry for your loss."
Lily sniffed, "Thank you Professor." She said.
"I've brought someone who has been exceedingly worried about you." He turned to the door, "Come on in."
Without missing a beat in rushed Minerva McGonagall, "Lily dear." The older witch rushed to her former student's side.
"Minnie." Lily choked out as tears formed into her eyes while her former Head of House took her hand. "James…James is gone." She cried.
"I'm so sorry dear." Minerva hugged Lily's head softly, "But you still have your baby. You have to stay strong…" Minerva forced back her tears.
"Indeed you must stay strong your baby will rely on you strength." Dumbledore says.
"Lily lifted her head looking at her former headmaster, "Your right…but Professor Dumbledore I saw him…I saw Voldemort cast the killing curse at my baby but it bounced off…Why I don't understand how that could happen?"
"Hmmm." Albus paused pondering this, "Lily…tell me…did you see when James lost his life."
Lily felt a lump in her throat but nodded.
"Albus!" Minerva scolded him, "Why make her think of that?"
"No…its okay…" Lily said quietly. "I had been blown into the tree. I had just came back to my senses when I saw Voldemort cast a curse at our baby…James jumped in front of it…" She said.
"Ah I understand…" Dumbledore said quietly, "James sacrificed himself to protect the child…in other words the love he felt for your baby protected the child when Voldemort tried to again."
"James'….love…protected our baby…" Lily began sobbing again as she clung to the child.
"James…" Sirius said a tear falling from his eye.
Albus let out a sad sigh, "Minerva…everyone…lets let Lily rest." He said stepping aside showing them the door.
Minerva kissed Lily's head, "Send for me anytime you need me dear…I'll come immediately." She then stood and walked out. Followed by Severus, and then Sirius.
Albus bowed, "Rest Lily…We will return soon." He said turning to the door before he walks out he looks back to her, "Remember…you must stay strong…for your daughter's sake."
Lily looked down at the sleeping baby in her arms, "I will…I will be strong for you…Jasmine." The baby laid there asleep her hair was as black as her father. She slept peacefully unaware of the bubbling hatred forming in her mother's heart.
