My Comfort

When Peter first came to live with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben, they had taken him to Build-A-Bear. They had walked him around the store and Peter had been able to choose his own bear. Peter had chosen a blonde Labrador looking dog because he had always wanted a dog. May and Ben had sat with him while it was stuffed, had both kissed the heart before it was placed inside and helped him choose an outfit for the stuffed dog.

"What are you going to call him?" Ben asked as they carried him out of the store in his box-kennel.

"Lucky," Peter had said. Peter hadn't explained it was because he felt lucky he had such an amazing Aunt and Uncle who had taken him in. But Peter thought they had understood when May squeezed the hand she was holding, and Ben gently tousled his hair.

Lucky had kept Peter company during the grief-stricken nights until the ache started to lessen. As Peter got older, Lucky stayed with him.

When Peter was eight, he went to Stark Expo. He was glad that he had listened to his Uncle Ben and not brought Lucky along with him as had not expected robots to attack. He was sure he would have lost Lucky in the push and pull off the crowd as everybody ran (but not Peter. Peter was going to be just like his hero and had stood up to the robots. Iron Man had even told him 'Good job, kid'.) The next day, he had begged Aunt May to take him to get Lucky a new outfit. One that made him look like Iron Man.

(It wasn't long until Lucky looked like all the Avengers, but he mostly wore the Iron Man costume.)

Eight turned to nine, to ten, to eleven, to twelve and while most of his classmates had long given up their soft animals and scoffed at the idea of still having one, Peter could not bring himself to part with Lucky. Instead, he stayed quiet and continued to cuddle Lucky at night.

Ned was the only other person who knew that Peter still slept with Lucky (though Peter suspected May knew too but she had never brought it up). The first time Ned had seen Lucky, Peter had been so embarrassed he thought his cheeks would be stained fire-engine red for the rest of his life. He had thought it was the end of his and Ned's epic friendship. To Peter's surprise, Ned had smiled said Lucky was awesome and then pulled out the Lego set they were going to build. Ned never teased Peter about Lucky or mentioned it when Peter brought the stuffed toy to their sleepovers.

When Peter became Spider-Man and started hanging out with Tony Stark, Peter never thought that Lucky would be something he had to explain to his childhood hero.

"Stupid," Peter hissed to himself as he frantically searched his room. "I am so stupid. Please, please, please don't let me have been this stupid?"

Ever since Peter had begun to frequently stay at the Tower, he had been sneaking Lucky in. Peter had tried to sleep without Lucky, telling himself that he didn't need his beloved childhood stuffed animal to get him through the night. That had quickly been shot to hell when Peter had one of the worst nightmares he had had in a long time. To avoid that happening again, he started sneaking Lucky in and out of the Tower.

And now he had forgotten Lucky at the Tower.

"No," Peter whimpered, staring at his room in dismay.

He was going to have to sneak into the Tower and get Lucky before Tony, or any of the Avenger's, found out he slept with a stuffed animal.

Peter carefully lowered himself and peeked into the big bay windows of the penthouse. He stared at the living room, scanning the room. He let out a small breath when he saw that it was empty. As soon as school had finished, he had raced out with a quick shouted-over-his-shoulder goodbye to Ned and dashed to the nearest alley way to change into his spider-suit.

Carefully, Peter crawled down the windows and landed lightly on the balcony. He paused, waiting to see if Tony would come running but he didn't. He tested the door and when it opened at his touch he slipped inside.

"Hello, Peter," FRIDAY's voice filled the room.

"Shhhhhh," Peter hissed. "I'm not here."

"I don't understand," FRIDAY relayed, almost sounding confused.

Peter jumped up and landed on the ceiling. "I'm not here FRIDAY. You never saw me."

"Okay Peter," FRIDAY said, now sounding amused.

"Is Mr. Stark here?" Peter asked as he crawled along the ceiling towards his bedroom.

"Boss is currently in his lab, Peter," FRIDAY said. "Would you like me to alert him you are here?"

"NO!" Peter yelped. "No. He can't know I'm here."

"Is everything okay, Peter?" FRIDAY asked.

"Everything is fine," Peter said quickly. He continued down the hallway and reached his bedroom. His stomach dropped as he saw that the door was partially open. He dropped down and crept inside the room.

His heart sunk when he saw Lucky neatly perched in the middle of the made bed. He reached up and pulled off his mask. Peter could have believed that he had simply forgotten Lucky just sitting there like that, but he definitely didn't leave Lucky with a very real Iron Man mask strapped to his face.

Tears burned Peter's eyes before he could stop them. His breath hitched with a suppressed sob as he stared at his stuffed animal. Someone had seen it. Someone had come into his room and seen Lucky. They knew he slept with a stuffed animal. They were going to think he was even more of a baby than they already did. They were going to kick him out of the team.

Peter was so caught up in his spiral that he didn't notice when someone entered the room and he started when gentle fingers ran through his hair. He whirled around to look through tear filled eyes at a familiar strawberry blonde figure.

"Come here, sweetheart," Pepper gently pulled Peter into her arm.

Peter hiccupped and buried his head into Pepper's shoulder. Her arms wrapped around him tightly and soothed up and down his spine. He shuddered and sobbed against her shoulder, humiliation burning through his entire body.

"Breathe, sweetheart," Pepper coached soothingly. "You're okay."

"They saw Lucky!" Peter wailed into her shoulder.

"Shhhh, no they didn't," Pepper soothed.

Pepper's words took a moment to register, and he pulled back, shoulder hitching as he tried to control his sobs. He blinked wetly at Pepper and sniffed. "What?"

Pepper smile was soft and gentle as she reached out and wiped Peter's tears from his cheeks. "Lucky fell out of your backpack when you left yesterday. Tony found him by the elevator and put him in your room before anyone else could see."

"Tony saw," Peter whispered, horrified.

Pepper wiped the tears from Peter's chin. "Tony has known about Lucky since you first brought him here."

"He did," Peter whimpered with horror.

"Tony checks in on you every time you stay here," Pepper explained gently, still smoothing his damp cheeks. "He saw you and Lucky."

Peter sniffed, his cheeks burning. "Why didn't he say anything?"

"Tony didn't want you to feel uncomfortable," Pepper dropped her hand. "He understands what Lucky means to you."

Peter shifted from foot to foot and reached up to wipe his face. "Tony doesn't think it stupid? Or a baby?"

"Oh sweetheart," Pepper pulled him into another hug. "Of course he doesn't."

More tears filled Peter's eyes as he buried his face in Pepper's shoulder. Peter still felt embarrassed but there was another emotion brewing inside him. He had no idea that Tony checked in on him every time he slept over. No idea that his mentor snuck into his room and made sure that he was okay every time he stayed over.

"Come with me," Pepper pulled out of the hug gently and took Peter's gloved hand.

Peter allowed himself to be pulled out of the room as he wiped away the new tears. He was tugged through the halls and into the elevator. Friday took them down and when the doors opened, Peter knew they were on the floor with Tony's personal lab. Peter couldn't find the words to protest and let Pepper pull him out of the elevator and into the lab.

"Tony," Pepper called as they entered.

"Hey Pep," Tony called from deeper within. "If this is about that meeting, I'm going to be late."

Pepper rolled her eyes at Peter who managed a small grin. "There is no meeting."

"Even better," Tony said.

"Peter's here," Pepper said.

There was a small clatter as Tony whipped around from the holotable he was hunched over. His eyes widened and he quickly abandoned the table, striding towards them.

"Underoos! Are your hurt? Bleeding? Your eyes are red. What happened?" Tony demanded all in a breathless rush.

The caring words were enough for Peter to crumble. He stumbled into Tony's chest, wrapping his arms around the man's waist, and hugging him tightly. Tony's arms automatically wrapped around him, holding him close.

"Kiddo? What's going on. Talk to me," Tony begged.

"I love you," Peter managed to get out through his tears.

"I love you too, Underoos," Tony promised, pressed a kiss to the top of Peter's head.

When Peter could get himself under control, he would tell Tony and Pepper about Lucky, about what the stuffed dog meant to him and all pain he had helped him through. But right now, he held Tony tightly, trying to show him just how much the man meant to him and how much he loved him.
