Chapter 2
Laundry day on the island used to be Calypso's least favorite day of any week or month. It used to be a long process of taking a large basket down to the water, and carefully washing every piece of clothing she owned. She would then have to wait another day or two for most of it to dry, and it was a long tedious process, but it wasn't that difficult anymore. Ever since Percy had come to the island he had taken care of their laundry problems, and with his control over water he could complete the whole process in less than an hour. This allowed Calypso to sit back, work on her gardens, or make a nice meal for Percy. When she woke up that morning though, she had a feeling something was different. She had a feeling something big was going to happen, so instead of letting Percy do his chores alone she offered her company to him as he made his way out of bed to get ready for the day. Being the sweet man that he was, Percy merely accepted with a small smile.
It never got cold down on the island which was nice as Calypso wasn't a big fan of snow or freezing temperatures anyways, so sunbathing down on the beach was an option any day she pleased as she rested her head in the sand wearing a much smaller dress than usual to help her tan while Percy worked. Occasionally he would ask her questions about things around the island, or if she had noticed that he had done something new to their home.
During the first few years of their relationship she would often ask him about what life was like in the mortal world, and what the technological innovations were like. At first it filled many of their days, weeks, and even months of time up, but eventually it made them both wistful of enjoying the outside world together so they stopped. After Calypso was done trying to learn about Percy's life though, and the things the outside world had been up to he had in turn delved into her life as a Daughter of Atlas. It wasn't much. She was one of the more peaceful Titans, though she did support her father in the war it was more of medical, moral, and recruiting support then actual combat which is why her punishment had been so lenient. From that topic they even joke around about escape plans, and even tried to put a few elaborate ones together. Percy had once taken her on a huge wave for miles outside the island, but as soon as it went out of sight in one direction it came up again in the opposite horizon. It was almost as if they were on their own planet that was completely spherical though they both knew it was just the magic of Ogygia.
Calypso used to often wonder if Percy ever regretted his decision to come back to the island, but every time the thought would cross her mind he would give her a knowing smile, and kiss her softly as if to tell her without words just how much he cared for her. She sighed in content as she watched Percy complete the laundry, and then turned to see the Titaness staring at him. He grinned, "See something you like my lady?"
She pretended to look around his body saying, "Yes, would you mind moving? You are blocking the view of the sun."
This made the young man chuckle as he began to carry the basket back towards the house grabbing a quick kiss on the cheek as he passed. Calypso smiled softly letting out a soft exhale, realizing she was likely just being paranoid about something big happening, and she turned to follow him.
As the immortal girl turned though she noticed something coming from the water. She stopped and stared in shock as she saw a man begin to emerge. She cried out, "Percy!"
In a flash Percy was at her side, and he didn't even have to ask what she was looking at. A man was now walking on water towards the island, and Percy reached for his pocket pulling out his pen, and bringing his sword to life, "Stay behind me Caly."
As the man approached, recognition slowly began to cross the islanders faces, and Percy took a small step forward as the man reached the sandy beach, and began striding over to the two. He stopped within about five yards of Percy and Calypso, and the two bowed in deep respect, while Percy spoke, "Hello father."
The man was wearing Greek battle armor unlike Percy had ever seen. His trident was fastened to some straps on his back, and the man looked like he had come from a battle, "Hello my son. It has been some time."
Calypso could tell Percy didn't have words for the man so she spoke for him, "Lord Poseidon, you are most welcomed to our home. Can I get you anything?"
The man shook his head giving the girl a lopsided grin that could've only belonged to Percy's father, "No my dear, not yet at least. I am happy to be in the place my son has called home for the last few years. This is much better than what awaited him in the mortal world."
Percy couldn't seem to contain himself, "How long has passed in the mortal world? Is everything still okay at camp?"
Poseidon gave his son a sad smile and stepped closer to him, placing a hand on his shoulder, "I don't blame you my son for choosing the path you did. It may not have been the heroic path I had envisioned for you, but it is a life to be proud of here with a woman you clearly love."
The young man swallowed hard, nodding, but still waiting for his fathers answer. The old sea god sighed, "It's been four years. It is currently 2012 by the mortal calendar. As for your old camp I am afraid it went up in flames during a battle with The Giants."
Calypso frowned at the lord of the sea's words, "Giants? As in the giants that followed the first Great War with the Titans?"
Poseidon gave a short nod to the woman, "The very same. It was a longer war than the first, and their armies were great. They decimated the demigod sanctuaries, and gave us a hell of a fight, but in the end we emerged victorious."
Percy took a deep breath before exhaling, "I am sorry to hear about my fallen brethren, but I am happy to know that Olympus perseveres once more. What are the demigods doing now without Camp to protect them?"
Poseidon looked at his son carefully before speaking, "We have a lot to discuss Perseus, and I promise I will answer your questions, but let us move inside and get comfortable."
Calypso immediately took that as her cue, and began escorting the men towards the house. She was slightly comforted that Lord Poseidon had placed a hand on Percy's shoulder indicating that his arrival here was not going to be violent in nature. Though she supposed if Olympus was going to send someone to kill Percy they wouldn't have sent his own father.
As they gathered around in the kitchen foyer area Calypso began lighting candles, and bustling around trying to make the place look as clean as possible, which was easy considering what a neat freak she usually was.
When Poseidon sat at the table, he pulled his trident off his back and placed it against the wall behind him. The man then looked at his son with a serious expression on his face, "There has been a new prophecy."
Percy didn't flinch at this as Calypso handed him a glass of tea, "It must be pretty bad if you are here."
Poseidon winced at that, "Zeus forbade me from coming to visit you after the first war. He claimed if you chose exile then exile was all you would get. It seemed fate had another idea though."
Calypso eventually sat down next to Percy taking his hand. She could tell he was nervous, but he seemed to melt into her presence as she spoke, "Lord Poseidon perhaps it would be beneficial for us to hear the prophecy."
The man nodded after a moment clearly hesitating then spoke:
The son of the seas to return from exile,
Daughter of a Titan freed from her isle.
Together defeat the invasion from the sky
Standing tall to uncover a lie.
The mist to fall before mortals eyes
Avengers together prevents total demise.
Percy and Calypso stared at the sea god in surprise. Calypso broke the silence, "You are here to return us to the mortal world?"
"Together?" Percy asked in wonder.
Poseidon smiled at them, "We cannot defy the sisters of fate. The prophecy came from the Oracle, and it cannot be ignored. Lord Zeus wished to send his messenger to you both, but I volunteered to bring the good news."
"What does it all mean? An invasion from the sky? Couldn't Lord Zeus just blast it out of the air? What is this about the mist?"
"We are unsure about many things right now, but there have been reports of a man in green wielding an immensely powerful scepter. We believe this to be Loki of Asgard. He used this weapon to take down a mortal military base just a few days ago. Initial reports say he stepped into our world from a portal that came from space. As ridiculous as it may sound, invasion could be imminent." Poseidon said ominously.
Percy's jaw dropped. An actual invasion of Earth from a different pantheon of mythology sounded like something even his worst nightmares couldn't have conjured up, "Loki, the Norse God of Mischief?"
Poseidon nodded in answer to his son's question, "Intelligence says the Norse God of Thunder, Thor, came from the heavens a few months back in New Mexico. With Loki's arrival that means we now have two Norse gods making appearances in a very short time. Whatever they have done caused the mist to fracture. The Norse started us down this path, and who knows how many more we will run into in the coming times. Needless to say, with everything that has happened in the mortal world over the last few years, the minds of normal mortals are becoming harder and harder to deceive."
Calypso looked worried, "The Titans warred with the Norse many eons ago. My father led the armies against them until they returned to Asgard. To my knowledge they haven't walked much of the Earth since then."
Percy frowned, "These Norse gods Thor, Odin, and Loki? Were they powerful?"
Poseidon shook his head, "Their armies were greater than ours, but other than the All-Father, their gods were not as powerful. Athena believes if push came to shove we would win in all out war, but obviously we are hoping it doesn't come to that."
"But it could come to that?" Percy asked.
"It could." The man answered honestly.
"This could be dangerous." Percy said worriedly.
"It certainly will be. The rest of the demigod brethren will be staying out of this. Our children have fought back to back wars and been successful. Our numbers will not survive a third, so they will be guarding Olympus as an auxiliary force prepared for battle if push comes to shove. The task that follows will be completely up to the two of you. If successful I am almost certain you will have earned your freedom." Poseidon said honestly.
Percy glanced at Calypso ready to say no, but her eyes were filled with hope. She had been on this island for a very long time with the belief she would never get off, but here was her chance. Percy looked at his father with a straight look, "I need an oath on the River Styx that Calypso and I will not be forced back onto the island."
Poseidon seemed surprised by his words, "My son I never wanted you here in the first place. I am glad you found your peace here, but your place is out in the world above being a hero. It was who you are meant to be, but I can't make an oath on behalf of the Olympian Council."
Calypso put a hand on Percy's forearm, "It's okay Percy. Even if I am out for only a little while it will be amazing if I get to do it with you."
Percy shook his head, "This could be an opportunity for the gods to separate us. What if we do this, and they let me stay out, but send you back to exile. I won't lose you over this."
Calypso stared into the young man's eyes in understanding. Freedom was something she very much desired, but she wanted Percy a lot more than her freedom. He was exactly what she had waited for in all her years of solitude. She wouldn't give up her home and future for danger, and possibly unfulfilled promises. She sighed, "He's right Lord Poseidon. I am afraid we won't risk the possibility of being separated. If no promises can be made then we will remain in exile."
Poseidon looked between the two with a frown on his face, "My brother and his children may return and ask a lot less nicely than I am."
"I have trained everyday in exile, and I will fight to defend my home if it is attacked. I defeated two Titans in single combat during the war, and I fear no God or Goddess." Percy said with anger rising in his voice.
Poseidon's eyes shot up as he realized just how serious his son was being. A long few moments passed before he stood, "Very well. I swear on the River Styx that you two will not be forced to return back to this island. If it comes down to it I will take you both and let you live your lives in Atlantis. There are measures we can take to ensure the two of you may stay together."
Thunder rumbled in the distance, and a small smile crept onto Percy's face, "Caly, go pack your things. I think it is time we return to the land of the aging."
Poseidon nodded, "You will no longer be immortal the moment we step off this island."
Calypso laughed musically, "What's the point if you aren't really living?"
This made both men smile as she whisked out of the room. Poseidon gave his son a smile, "It will be good to have you back my son. You have found a good woman to stand at your side, and I am proud of you despite the less than welcome greetings you may get from others. You asked me earlier about a safe place for demigods, but there isn't one anymore. They are living as guards of Olympus for the first time in our history. Hecate has expanded the Empire State Building's living areas, and now Olympus is defended around the clock by demigods, while also providing them spaces to train in certain areas, but I am afraid you will not be joining them."
Percy looked at his father curiously, "You won't be returning me to the other demigods?"
"Percy Jackson chose exile in the wake of one of the greatest victories in mortal history. A lot of people were understanding of your decision, but just as many were angry. I believe taking you back to your brethren would do more harm than good." Poseidon said seriously.
"Where will we go then?" Percy asked curiously.
The man walked over to his son placing a hand on his shoulder smiling at him, "Home. Your mother has missed you very much, and your sudden return will be quite a shock, but it will be a good reunion. From there we will have the person who has been feeding us intelligence get in contact with you to tell you what is going to happen next. We want you and Calypso on the ground level to hunt for this Loki of Asgard to find out his plans."
Percy nodded, feeling his gut clench at the thought of his mom. He knew he had put her through hell by staying on Ogygia, but when he explained to her his choice he was certain she would understand. A thought then occurred to Percy as he posed a question to his father, "Dad, if I was so dangerous to be left in exile, isn't it still dangerous to pull me out?"
Poseidon's eyebrows furrowed, "You think the gods left you in exile because you were dangerous?"
Percy frowned at this, "Isn't it?"
"Percy you saved the lightning bolt when almost everyone believed you were the thief, you saved the camp once and saved the daughter of Zeus' life, and then you saved Artemis by helping defeat Atlas on Mount Othrys. That doesn't even begin to mention the fact that you defeated my father, and saved Olympus in the final hours of the war, and successfully defended Manhattan. You earned your choice, and my brother was happy that one of my children would be taken out of future equations without having to kill them himself . The gods left you alone out of respect not because of your power." The sea god explained gently.
Percy let the words settle into his mind for several long moments. He went through a range of emotions, but when Calypso came into the room with a vibrant smile he let it all go as she said, "I'm ready."
Poseidon never took his eyes off his son as he came to terms with what he had learned, and in the end the young man smiled at the woman he loved, "Then let's get out of here if you are ready Father?"
The God of the Seas gave his son a proud smile, and then summoned his trident to his hand, "I have waited to return you to the mortal world for a long time my son. Say goodbye to this place, children."
Calypso took Percy's hands as tears threatened to spill out, but they gave each other strength as Poseidon put a hand on each of their shoulders, and teleported them away.
(A/N) Chapter 2 is in the books with Calypso and Percy already escaping their island. Updates are going to be coming every other Monday, and I will do my best to keep ahead of myself so there are no hiatus in this story. I am still working on chapter 8 right now, and I have admittedly been a little stuck, but there is plenty of time to get through the Battle of New York, and plenty of ideas to follow once I get past it.
I had some great feedback from the first chapter, and I am happy to keep updates consistent while so many people are interested in reading this story, so until next time, see you all On September 13th, Cheers!
To answer some reviewers:
Deepthoughts42:
I don't share all my work at once, because if I did you could be waiting months at a time for an update. Usually I will write out the first 10-20 chapters to make sure I can keep the story flowing, and keep the picture of an ending in my head. I hate leaving unfinished works, and it is something I've had to do over the years, because I just have no idea what to write at some points. This helps me minimize these possibilities, so bear with me the chapters will come at a steady rate.
To HotDogSmoothie and Alex2947:
A lot of people complain about putting scene breaks because it 'disrupts the story flow', so last chapter was an attempt to see if I could make it flow without those things. I don't like it, but I was just giving it a try. I will continue putting scene breaks in the story for time skips and POV changes.
A final shoutout to Monaxia who beta approved this chapter. Cheers buddy, and thank you.
