Prologue

A lone boy woke up abruptly by a strange sound. He couldn't quite remember what he had dreamed about, it had been confusing and was already starting to fade. Darkness surrounded him, but he was already used to it. He was Harry Potter, and he was a freak. Thus, he slept inside the cupboard, under the stairs, where he could not bother his uncle or his aunt or his cousin.

The cupboard had been his home for as long as his mind stretched back, and darkness had become a blanket of safety. Anything was better than suffering Aunt Petunia's scolding glares, which reminded him he was not welcome in the house. Uncle Vernon was a man not to be crossed, specially when he was not in the mood - which was often. And Dudley, his cousin, was even worse. A dull ache on his arm reminded him of the new entertainment he and his friends had discovered since last year: Harry Hunting.

He often wondered what would be to have a real family, but he quickly dismissed the thought. The Dursleys had made sure he knew he had nobody else.

Ping

'What was that' the boy wondered. The sound seemed to come from nowhere.

Swish!

'There!' He had not imagined it, there was something inside the cupboard with him.

As if on cue, a small blue light started shining, like a light bulb, with a soft blue hue, and it had wings. It flew around him a couple of times humming lightly in a comforting way.
Laughter, like the one of a small girl, filled his ears and the blue light came down on him. Its touch was soft, but it pushed him just enough to catch his attention. More laughter.

"Hello" the blue light said in a childish voice.

"Hi there," the boy replied, his voice trembling a bit. Even if the Dursleys treated him as dirt in the ground, they had forced him to never be disrespectful, else he would probably end with a bruise and no food for three days. Also, he was genuinely curious about the blue light and he felt no threat whatsoever coming from...

"What are you?"
"First things first" the blue light said "I need to know your name. Please don't get scared."

A soft chime filled the cupboard. Harry reckoned that the sound may have been only in his head but he couldn't be sure. He was surprised when a blue square popped up, out of thin air, like a hologram of a sci-fi movie. Letters appeared in white and formed a keyboard and over them a cursor blinked every second.

"Harry" he said. The letters typed themselves in.

"So you are Harry, right? That is a nice name!" The ball of light chimed "Now your last name"

"Potter".
The blue screen blinked out of existence with another chime. The ball of light bobbed up and down and giggled merrily.

"Listen! I'm Ali the fairy and I'm going to be your helper throughout the game!"

"Hold on a second" Harry interrupted abruptly "Ali, you said your name was? What kind of game are you talking about? My relatives won't let me get even near a game, how am I supposed to play? How do I know I want to, if I don't know what it is about?".

"Oh, the name it's really not important" Ali said nervously, "And, I'm sorry, but you have to play it whether you want to or not. Anyways you don't need to worry about the game. As time passes you will get used to it."

"But is everyone playing it? How come I hadn't noticed before I was in a game? How do I win?"

"Slow down Harry" Ali said after giggling "There's no need to be upset. Look, the game only activates when something special happens. So tell me Harry have you seen anything unusual? Anything out of the ordinary?".

Now that Harry thought about it something strange had happened yesterday, and many more times. He had literally appeared on top of the school roof. At the time he hadn't been able to explain it when he was found out. Nobody believed him, as usual.

"Yes I think something might have happened" Harry admitted in a low voice "Do you know how did I..."

"Wait!" Ali said, distressed, "Don't get ahead of things, there are some things I need to explain before I can start answering other questions. First of all there is your user interface."

After saying that, Ali approached just before his eyes and he was blinded momentarily. He blinked trying to get the glare to subside but to no avail and then tried to rub his eyes but it still wouldn't let him see.

"Relax" Ali said. Her voice was a mixture of mirth tinged with concern. "You have to let it work into you. I would never hurt you - I'm not even allowed in fact. Although since I'm just a fairy the most harm I can do is bump into you."

She - the voice sounded girly so he figured he could think of it as a she - had said all that cheerily, which did relax him a bit. Slowly he regained his vision, but something was not the same.
Huh...

On the left lower corner of his eyes, three bars appeared -red, green and blue - with just the right size for him to be aware of them but not actually get in the way. On the left upper corner a small circle showing lines and names like "kitchen" or "cupboard" in what looked like a map of the house. Then the right lower corner had three circles, one big one and two other smaller ones on the left and upper part of the big one. On the mid lower part a long blue bar stretched with a legend that said "Level 1" and below it "no-class".

"Ali!" Harry groaned "What did you just do to me?"

"I just activated your Graphic User Interface" she said fluttering from side to side "Or if you prefer GUI for short. This will be of extreme help during your game. You have your Hit Points or HP for short"

As she said this the red bar blinked white for a couple of seconds. A label could be seen: 1000/1000 HP. Ali went on pointing at the different sections of the GUI, but Harry couldn't help being quite overwhelmed. There was the Blue bar with his MP that had 50/50 and the green stamina Bar with 100/100.

"These are you Vital stats" Ali added as the stamina bar flashed "HP Bar is your life points - if you get hit, it will go down rapidly and if it goes to 0 it would mean certain Death so be very careful. The blue bar - that one I am not allowed to explain right now - but soon you will understand, and the Stamina Bar is your energy bar: whenever you do something tiring like running or lifting the stamina bar will go down rapidly and recover while you rest."

Harry had countless questions that just wouldn't form coherently. He was being bludgeoned with so much information he didn't know where to start. The stat bars were awfully useful, he recognized. The blue bar had to be something special, and he surely wouldn't rest until he figured it out. He had an idea that it had to do with what happened the day before on the school roof...

"Anyway there is also your level bar, which shows your EXP points - there's lots of ways that you can earn them - and your Map right there showing where you are right now, and there is your Skill Display with the current equipment." She said as each item on the GUI flashed rapidly. Harry was not stupid - no matter how much his relatives thought that about him - and he understood somewhat everything that Ali was explaining. There was still much to know and he vowed to find out more about video games. This sounded very much like a video game.

Not that he had ever played one.

He had of course heard of them in the school, and Dudley had some kind of console under the television - he always lost and threw the controller away in anger - but Harry remembered a few things about them. However they usually had to do with adventures and saving someone or defeating some kind of monster. One thing popped up in his head before Ali could continue with her rambling.

"Am I the only player?"

Ali chimed two times. He wondered if that meant she was going to say 'No'.

"There are many players in the game, but there are also Non-Player Characters or NPC for short. But let's not get ahead with that, there will be much time to explain. It is a good question though. Now as you can see you have 0 Exp points right now. You will earn Exp points as you perform Quests or you defeat enemies. When the level bar fills up you will advance one level. Each one you increase will raise your stats!"

Another blue screen appeared.

"This is the Attributes screen. Here you can see many of your characteristics as a player. They are Constitution, Dexterity, Agility, Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma, and Luck. On the lower part of the screen you can see your AP. Each time you level you receive some Attribute Points and that quantity will increase as you get higher levels. Different attributes impact on different aspects of your life, how you look, how you do in school and so on ."

As a six year old boy, Harry had never thought of how he looked, and he had to actually try not to get good grades at school, despite him liking really much to impress his teachers. He had a keen eye for solving math problems and he didn't struggle with science topics like other children did.
But he received quite a shock when an image of him appeared next to his attribute skins. He was small. In fact, he was so small he didn't reach half the screen.

"Is it normal for someone my age to be that small?" Harry wondered out loud, with his voice filled with preoccupation.

"Ah... well, no. I don't think so" Ali said, her small wings cast downwards with a low chime. But a second later she chimed merrily and bumped him.

"But that's why you need your attributes. You can also increase your attributes by doing certain tasks. So don't you worry we will have you stretch up in no time! There are certain things to be done in the house that will earn you AP, and perhaps a skill point as well!"

"What is a skill point?" Harry asked and immediately the blue screen changed. The attributes gone, they were replaced by three screens with two arrows on each side. On top of each screen, a gray rectangle appeared and below it several smaller squares linked with white lines appeared. The left arrow blinked and the screens seemed to rotate.

"These are your available skill trees" Ali chimed as the screens flew past his vision, and Harry couldn't even count them. "Each Skill Tree will give you skills in certain categories, but you will only know what they are about when you discover the first skill. Now let's change to the Feats screen. Feats are certain traits you have that will make you more proficient in certain tasks. In other words, they affect how good you are with some skills or how an attribute impacts on your looks. There are countless things you can do with your attributes, skills and feats."

"How will I know what to do with them, or which ones to increase? There are so many of them, and so many of them are blank! For being a helper you aren't being exactly helpful".
Ali chimed sadly and she went low, almost to the ground and started weeping quietly.

"Ali are you ok?"

"I'm sorry I am not a good helper!" she snapped a bit angrily as she bumped accusingly against him before lowering to the ground again "This is my first time being a helper and I wanted to do well. When I was told I was finally assigned to a Player I was so excited! Bu- but -but I am already screwing up. 'It's not easy' they said, and I should have listened 'Helping a gamer is not an easy task'. I just wanted to do good and impress everyone and finally make some friends."

"Ali please don't cry! I also don't have any friends. My cousin, Dudley, he won't let me. Everyone is scared of him, and other kids being with me gets him angry, and I don't know why. Nobody should be alone without friends. So let's make a pact ok? Let's become friends, what do you say? Would you be my first friend?"

"Really?" she said with excitement in her voice. She squealed and bumped lightly into his head.

"Yes I want to be your friend!"

A small blue rectangle popped on the right side of his vision, just above the skill display.

"Look you have earned an extra point in your charisma stat! Charisma affects the relationship you have with others and how much you can influence them!"

"Listen Ali, it looks like you really know how the game works but I think you should explain me only the major stuff and work on the small stuff as we go through with the game"

"Right, of course you are right, we would never finish. Oh look! Another stat point to wisdom! I think you will do just great in the game! Also the small blue rectangle is called a notification".
A loud thump coming from above caught Harry's attention. That could only mean one thing.

"Wake up boy!" The voice of his aunt Petunia sounded like...

"Was that a banshee?" asked Ali, flying behind Harry, with her wings downward. He couldn't really fault her, aunt Petunia's shrieks were famous for being heard a mile from his house.

"No it's something much much worse Ali"

And so it began his first day.

Aunt Petunia opened the cupboard with a crash and went on shrieking all sorts of nonsense blaming his very existence of everything that was and would be wrong in her life.

He barely even noticed. So used he was to his Aunt's rants. Besides, something else had distracted him. A frown formed in his face.

"Where is that music coming from Ali?"

Ali giggled.

"That is background music. You can turn it off in the options menu!"

It was a soft tone that turned to be quite relaxing.

"Come here and prepare breakfast, you lazy bum! "
"You know what, Ali? Let's leave it on"

Side quest: Cook breakfast
Rewards: 25 Exp.

Bonus Objective: Get some food in your inventory without your aunt noticing.
It turned out that quests were not necessarily about slaying monsters and saving princesses. He hoped not every quest would be like the first five he did helping in the kitchen cooking and cleaning around the house and doing the garden. He just knew there had to be something else to all of this.

After getting to the kitchen his aunt he had started the stove when he noticed a small black bar floating next to him. Ali had laughed amusedly when he almost dropped the milk, falling down hard on his backside.

"That is a feat percentage bar. It will increase as you get better on one of the feats."
He had wanted to ask if cooking would be a feat at all, but his aunt already thought he was a freak, no need to confirm it by talking to something only he could see. And when he was finally finished, the bar had filled up in blue and he had earned a point in 'cooking/?'.

The blue screen popped up again and one of the small squares wasn't gray anymore. Instead it had a small drawing of a large cauldron with a stirring spoon and a small '1' on a corner next to it other grayed squares were being pointed by arrows one after the other.

While mowing the lawn he noticed the same small bar but instead of blue it became green. He had an extra constitution and strength points after an hour. It was oddly... satisfying. The only problem was his stamina bar had gone way too low and he noticed he got more and more tired as this happened.

He had plopped down on the ground and took out of his inventory the glass of orange juice he had stored when aunt petunia wasn't looking. He had oddly earned an instant point in the 'Thief' feat, which had not one but three branches after the initial one. 'Thief level [1] gives you [twenty-five] percent less chance of getting caught while stealing or during pickpocket,' the description read.

He didn't know how to feel about that. On one hand he felt it was wrong to steal, but yet he hadn't even had a single, tiny piece of bread for breakfast when aunt Petunia sent him away to do other chores and his uncle munched like a starving pig. Dudley wasn't even awake. He understood that stealing was wrong but he had the choice to either starve or to steal a bit of food. Food won in the end.

So he had stuffed his inventory with all the food that he could get away with. The Dursleys bought so much that they wouldn't even notice.

Oh, and the inventory was awesome.

Part of the menu screen, he could just grab whatever he wanted and drop it into a blue holographic box and voila.

"Items on your inventory are accessible to you all times" Ali had said "On the lower part of your screen you can see the weight you can carry. As you increase your stamina bar your available weight capacity will go up."

He was certainly shocked when things started to pop out when he was mowing the lawn. He found two rare roots - a small screen appeared telling him - and two mysterious coins that were completely silver.

Maybe if he could mow the neighbor's lawn he would earn a couple of pounds to buy some food.

It was already past four o'clock and Harry had decided to bail out from the house to the park. He was almost halfway to earning a level - after making lunch and helping with the laundry and escaping from his cousin along with every other chore. The only problem was he had wandered way too far from his relative's house while running and he had wandered to who knows where. Just what he needed.

Ali was circling around him in some sort of aerial dance when something startled her. She bumped desperately.

"Hey, look!"

A small, round, fluffy, thing had appeared just behind one of the park's trash bins. It seemed to be munching something while other children ignored it. He couldn't quite remember ever seeing something remotely similar to the fluffy ball of fur, ever.

Ali shot fast towards it and a blue small screen appeared next to it.

'Level 2 Puffskein'

Above the ball of fur a red bar floated, following it wherever it jumped. A legend appeared in front of him then

Quest: Earn your first battle XP
Objective: Hit the puffskein with a rock'
Bonus: 100 xp'

Deciding to go along with it he grabbed a small pebble on the ground and threw it against the puffskein.

The puffskein did not like being hit with rocks.

The red bar had shortened almost by half but the puffskein was suddenly not nice anymore and had jumped towards Harry in astonishing speed knocking him back a few steps. His own Hp bar had gone down 50 points. Instinct kicked in and started running.

He idly wondered how the whole scene would look, being chased by a snarling, and mad fluffy ball of fur. Thankfully it was not fast enough to catch him. When he found himself with enough distance between himself and the puffskein, he lunged for another rock and threw it with all his strength.

Somehow he had actually hit the puffskein again. The red bar began shortening once again until it became fully gray. Then Harry stopped in his tracks.
The fluffy ball of hair dissolved.

"What in the world"

It turned gray, and into ashes, blown by the wind. Harry stared gobsmacked, paying no attention to Ali's insistent calls. He crawled towards the blackened remains of the puffskein but a soft pop surprised him. On the last spot where the puffskein has been struck the white fluffy pelt appeared with a blue square labeling it. It read "puffskein pelt 3G".

"You can sell it on the market," Ali said, finally catching Harry's attention.

Harry wondered what kind of merchant could buy the weird animal's remains. As far as he had noticed, nobody else could see it.

His day was getting weirder by the minute.

As he saved the pelt in his inventory he noticed the small square on the corner indicating he had finally earned a Level up. Just by wishing it, he accessed the leveling menu.

All his stats had gone up and he had spent a well-deserved skill point in a passive skill. It had called his attention after he had earned his thief Feat and a white square had cleared in the skill screen. It was called 'Blend In' and its first level gave him '50% more Stealth chance' which Ali explained would allow him not to be easily noticed when he entered the 'hide' mode. He only had to wish not to be seen and a small indicator would appear in the form of a closed eye that would open if he were to be detected. The next window showed the attributes, which had 5 extra points.

"Which ones would you recommend Ali?"

"Depends on what you want" said Ali chiming merrily "Dexterity, or dex for short will increase your aim and reflexes. Strength it's pretty obvious, Constitution will give you more HP and improve your body. Agility will help you with your speed and stamina. All of these will change how you look and how you feel -physically speaking"

"It could make me taller?" Harry asked hopefully.

"That's right! Now, the other ones are Intelligence that will help you with you MP and will make you smarter. You can usually increase this one when reading a book or solving a puzzle. Wisdom will help you with something I can't reveal yet but it will also prove helpful. Luck will help you with abilities like stealth and critical strike."

Harry chose the 5 points and put them into his Constitution. Every time he added one, his hp went up by 20. Another blue screen appeared showing something entirely different.

"Those are Classes Harry" Ali said excitedly "There are many that you can choose from, but be careful. There's ups and downs of choosing a class. Some skill trees and perks will be closed and others will be improved. You can't change class later or you risk losing many skill points. Choose carefully"

Harry only needed a thought to browse through all the different classes, but there were way too many. There was hunter, assassin, Ninja and druid and many many others... he lost count of how many he had already seen. When he reached the end he was no more sure than when he began browsing, but he did find one called 'Custom'.

"Huh, that is strange" Ali said leaning into the screen "You seem to have the developer's features enabled. Look, Harry, a custom class has to be done from Scratch, and it often takes a lot of time." Ali said worriedly, "Not only that, it also has to compile. Are you sure that you want to Create a new class? Not many people do - you have to create the history behind the class, and select the skill trees and browse through endless feats and…."

"What do you mean by compile ?"

"It is quite a long explanation, but in short, it means that the game has to like it".

This will be interesting, Harry thought.

"Come Ali, we have some research to do."

Uncle Vernon had a new laptop from work, but he dared not use it. The risk of his meals being taken away for three days did not justify.

"Of course!" Harry said slapping his forehead "We should get to the library. They have computers there!"

Detective John Pierce drove his BMW M3 down Abbey road, wondering why exactly would he be brought out of bed at such an early hour. Even worse, having not spent enough time with his young daughter, he had been looking forward to spending his free day on a trip with her. But by the looks of things, he wouldn't be making it on time.

Nonetheless, Inspector Lewis had been thoroughly insistent he had to come check a case at two thirty in the morning - going as far as waking up his boss. His brand new smart-phone blared alive and a message from his wife shone on the screen.
Come home safe, dear.
He half smiled knowing Sophie would be asleep in the next five minutes.

Blue and white lights flashed in front of him and he quickly parked his car just outside the safe perimeter. Already rows of reporters were lined up attempting to take pictures and interview the officers. A frown creased his forehead. There were around thirty officers coming in and out of the scene, along two ambulances and a forensics team.

'Looks serious baby, half the police station is here. Probably won't make it early. I'll get Taylor to give me another free day. Love you, Beautiful'

He clicked his phone, screen going black, and he stepped out of the car. He almost groaned when the reporters noticed him and, like a pack of hyenas, barreled up to him. His fake grimace - the one that he reserved for public appearances - made them back up a good ten inches, and without even a glance, he stepped under the yellow tape.

An uniformed officer quickly approached and introduced himself as Sergeant Daniel Thomas and led him through the scene. At first sight it looked nothing more than a car crash - a really bad one at that.
Perhaps a carjacking gone wrong.

"I apologize for the late hour, sir" Thomas said tiredly.

"We can blame Lewis later for that, just walk me through the scene".

"At 1:30 AM we received an alert of a car crash. Since it's Abbey Road well... we wanted to clear things fast."
They rounded the '10 Passat that had thoroughly demolished the front side of a brand new Mercedes. The driver of the CLK was already being checked in the ambulance, but seemed otherwise in perfect state.
"The accident seemed straight forward, nothing out of the ordinary. That is until the officer got to the other car. We suspect murder sir."
"Murder? And how did you jump from car wreck to a murder"
"Forensics, Sir" Thomas said, eyes downcast. His hand had a slight twitch, which seemed odd for a sergeant. Thomas was not a young lad by any stretch.
Surely he has seen his fair share of gruesome cases. What could get him so spooked?.
"First time on a crime scene, sergeant?" John asked.
"Not by any long shot sir, still..."
"Bloody hell just tell me what is going on! Spill it sergeant!"
Thomas glanced and grabbed his hat in both hands. With a nod of his head, he invited him to follow. The three bodies were already covered. Two persons were arguing next to them, but stopped when John and the sergeant approached, and quickly walked away.
"Open them, Sir," Thomas said.
What the bloody…

"They are..."
The man's face was frozen, his mouth open in an everlasting scream and his eyes were wide in terror. For a single moment he thought he heard screams coming from nowhere. A chill went up through him. He quickly covered the face and looked at the still-twitching sergeant.
No wonder he's all shaken up.
"Completely unblemished. Not a single scar" Thomas said, his hand scratching the back of his head. He looked anywhere but body. "This is... was, Vernon Dursley. Wife and son are in the other bags. Sir... it's the same with the other two. I ..."
"They weren't killed in the car crash"
"Sir, forensics are telling me they somehow died instantly."
John frowned.

"It will take around two days for the results to come back from the lab. But there isn't any indication they were poisoned. And for what they tell me their organs shut down exactly at the same time. The whole body shut off... if it had only been one of them, sure it could be a freak illness or whatever. But two others? And the expressions… PHG was just notified, just in case this was some sort of infection or virus..."

"They were not just in shock from crashing the Mercedes. These people, they were terrified of something. I don't think I've ever seen a victim stuck with that face." John said. "Did you notice the markings on the back seat? There was someone else in that car. I need you to find out exactly how they died Thomas. Did the other driver see anything?"

"Already questioned him, can't remember a thing about the crash."
Of course he doesn't. ..

"Keep me posted. I want to be notified the minute they find out anything. In the meantime I want to visit the Dursley residence."

"Will do, Sir," Thomas said.

Triple murder, news are going to have a field day...

With another glance at the body, John Pierce walked away.

After a few hours driving, John arrived at his destination. The houses on Privet drive were identical and the neighborhood was peaceful on the early morning of November 1st.
Gulping what was left of his coffee, he glanced at the route marked on his phone.
Now what?

Frowning, he smacked lightly the gadget in a vain effort to get it working again. The blue arrow that showed his current position disappeared for a second only to reappear ten miles away. Apparently there was no signal.

He turned the phone in defeat and parked his car on number's 4 driveway. He whistled lightly, admiring the house. It was perfect. Green garden adorned with beautiful flower beds; white painted walls and not a single speck of dust on the windows.
He knocked on the door, dreading this moment. He hated being the bearer of bad news. No sound came from inside. He grabbed a pair of lock picks and began working on the keyhole.

There you go…

A muffled thump could be heard from the inside and John took out his gun with haste.

"Police officer, is somebody home?"

A loud crash came from somewhere near the staircase. John quickly made way making sure there was no one in the adjoining rooms.

BAM

The sound has come from below the stairs, behind the door of the cupboard. He was very careful as he opened it.

I'm going to be sick.

Inside the cupboard stood a small child. He had bright green eyes of a clear shade the detective had never seen before, framed by round spectacles, and a black mop of hair that hid a scar in the shape of a lightning.

"Who are you? Where is my aunt and my uncle?" The boy said in a small voice. He stretched his neck trying to see past John "Aunt Petunia didn't wake me up to cook breakfast today, or yesterday, and I am hungry."
"Hello lad" John said lamely, kneeling down. The boy had a bad stench but he ignored it "Why were you inside the cupboard? How long have you been in the cupboard?"

"I am not sure, Uncle Vernon wasn't very happy when he saw me using his laptop" the boy said he said trying to lift up the oversized shirt he was wearing "What day is it?"

John hated these cases.

"It's Saturday lad. Say, what is your name?"

"Harry, Sir. Harry Potter"

"Well Harry, my name is John and I'm with the police. I have bad news, I am afraid. Come join me in the kitchen."

The boy was so very small and he had a gaunt face. He probably hasn't eaten in quite some time. It had taken a bit of time and his hand trembled as he did so, but he finally sat up in one of the white chairs.

"Harry, there was an accident. Your family was there and - they will not be coming back Harry."

"You mean like my mom and my dad?"

"I'm sorry Harry, yes, like you mom and dad"

"So that means I can have food now?" Harry asked, his eyes bright with tears.

John's fists were becoming white and he felt his cheeks heat up in anger. He was feeling less and less sorry for the Dursleys. He was no stranger to cases of child abuse and domestic violence, but he couldn't help but to be angered every single time. His heart broke whenever he had to take a little kid to child services.

"Yes you can have food now Harry" John said "And you will never have to fear the Dursleys again".

And so John drove to St. Mark's orphanage, where his contact from social services had directed him to take the boy. Sister Mary took him in with a grim face. There had already been twenty children orphaned that same month, and the Sisters were struggling to make ends meet. Vowing to dig into those cases, John made his way back to the scene, where Lewis had made an intriguing discovery, or so he said.

What John couldn't see as he left the orphanage was a small blue light trailing behind the small boy.

Hours later the authorities reported a gas leak which had caused damages on Abbey road, where three unidentified people had lost their lives. No one remembered ever being in a car crash, much less a boy named Harry Potter and he would not be heard of until six years later.
