Draco Malfoy let out the breath he didn't know he was holding. The article clenched in his pale fist. He pondered over what he had just read. Surely it was a trick that his brain was so cruelly playing on him. Perhaps all his nights of fitful sleep and days of unending work were taking their toll. Mother had always told him the possibility was always there, but he had simply laughed it off thinking she was attempting to scare him into giving her a new tiny family member. Anyways, that had always been a threat just for him and not the entire magical population of Great Britain. There was no way the wizarding world would be subjected to something so … atrocious. Would they?
Hermione Granger was enraged. She was beyond words at this .. this horrifying law she was now under. She always knew wizards were a bit traditional and had outdated principles but she couldn't even come up with a reasonable explanation as to why they would do something so ridiculously antiquated. Yes, maybe the notion of an arranged marriage was still somewhat common among the Ancient Houses of the pureblood society, but that was to keep their blood and their vaults intact, not something that was found anywhere outside those circles.
Releasing a heavy sigh and pinching the bridge of her nose she tried to think of any reason to attempt justifying this. It was no secret that the wizarding world's population had plummeted and the number of magical children was at an all-time low from the aftermath of the war. It wasn't exactly a time of love and joy. Families were still on the mend and just barely overcoming their grief. Why couldn't the ministry just let people fall in love and start their own families!? Shaking herself from the flurry of angry thoughts she lowered her gaze and stared incredulously at the Daily Prophet that was now slightly crumpled up and resting at the edge of her desk. It seemed mocking just sitting there daring her to try something. In a jerky movement, she shot forward and grabbed the offensive paper balling it in her fist, then threw it with excess force across her office.
"Hmph,'' she let out the triumphant noise while fixing the strands of curly hair that had loosened from the force of her throw, but just as quickly felt that anger and loss of control take over again. There was no reason she had to sit in her office and take this, she was Hermione Granger for Merlin's sake! She didn't have to stand idly by as these ridiculous laws were being made. Deciding that she could get more done if she had someone with a heavy influence on the wizarding world she stood up in a huff. After shuffling over to the to the fireplace she stood for a while thinking of what she should say to Harry. Debating whether he was home was a short feat after remembering he was almost always at home these days. She took a bit of floo powder into her hand and with a confident voice yelled out "12 Grimmauld Place!"
Brushing the soot off of her previously clean black robes Hermione looked up to find her best friends curious green eyes staring right at her. The little bundle in his arms leapt forward and with all the force someone so tiny could muster latched himself on to her leg.
"Auntie Mione Auntie Mione!" squealed the toddler who was now begging at her with outstretched arms to be picked up. His tiny little fingers wiggling in excitement. Her heart stretched and for a moment she forgot all of her negative feelings and felt pure love and happiness towards the beautiful little boy now snuggled in her arms. His eyes were a violent shade of blue that almost startled her. A short amused giggle escaped her lips when his eyes changed to match the exact shade of her brown ones. His metamorphmagus abilities never failed to amaze her. With a content sigh she made her way over to the couch Harry was sitting. With Teddy nestled into the crook of her neck and playing with her hair she somewhat dramatically dropped herself on the empty side of the comfortable upholstery.
"I need your help" she rushed out in a disgruntled tone.
"Hi Hermione nice to see you too," there was a playful taunt to his words. He reached out to squeeze her shoulder and gave her a small peck on the cheek to which she responded to with a limp half-smile. Then he noted the expression on her face was getting worse by the second. I haven't seen her this upset since the incident. He thought to himself worriedly.
"What's wrong?" Harry questioned silently hoping whatever it was he could help fix; if only to get that devastating look off her face.
Hermione felt herself getting more and more miserable. She had come with anger and determination on her mind but now in the safety of the person she trusted more than anyone else in the world all she felt was emptiness.
"I was getting out of a meeting that had gone extremely well, and I found the Daily Prophet waiting for me on my desk. A new law is being put in place and it's horrid and going to ruin my life and countless others. I can't stand by this Harry I just can't! There has to be something we can do or maybe something you can do. I know you and Gin won't be affected but maybe you could have a few words with Kingsley and change his mind," she rushed out a bit messily. Of course he'll help you said a reassuring voice in her mind. She already knew that, but the slight doubt at the back of her mind reminded her he wasn't subjected to the new law so he didn't have to help her.
"I'm sorry," she said flatly. Tightening her hold on Teddy who was lightly napping on her chest in an attempt to comfort herself. It worked and she pressed a soft kiss to his unruly blue hair.
"No you have nothing to be sorry for, but to be honest I am a bit confused. I'll help you, of course, but I think maybe you should explain what this law is and why exactly it has you in such a frenzy."
"Oh," she said a bit dumbfounded
"Is it about your job?" He questioned trying to make sense of why the witch he'd known for what felt like a lifetime was so upset. The sadness that was painted all over her face made his heart ache.
"No, Harry it's the marriage law," she answered dejectedly.
A/N: I've been reading fanfiction for as long as I can remember (like 6 years) and it's become one of my all-time favorite things to do. In my early reading days, it was a much broader spectrum that has now burned down to Dramione. It's my all-time favorite type and it's a slight addiction at this point. Over the years I decided to write my own works but writing is a long and tricky process so I'm taking my time.
Also seeing that no one I know likes reading and wouldn't be caught dead on this site I'm finally publishing something yay
