43: The Final Horcrux - Part 2

Wu Fei rolled his eyes as he approached Duo. The others all looked at the braided pilot with varied expressions: confusion for most, terror for Harry and Draco. Whatever Duo meant, it was sure to involve some form of high speed insanity. Wu Fei stood beside his brother, a hand on his shoulder and looked out at the others.

"Stand in a circle and grasp hands."

"Where's the portkey?" Nott asked, looking a bit calmer as he came to the conclusion that that was obviously what Duo had meant.

Duo grinned. "No portkey, those are too easily traced. Wouldn't be able to get one on such short notice anyway. Nah, we're gonna jump right through time an' space. It's real safe, honest."

The others all formed a circle, each grasping the hand of another with Harry's hand on Duo's shoulder much like Wu Fei's was and Draco's on Wu Fei's shoulder. They waited for it… expecting a pull or a pop or maybe even some form of suction. Wizarding travel was often accompanied by such sudden unpleasantries, but nothing at all happened at first. It wasn't until Daphne spoke up that any of them really noticed what was going on.

"When did it get so dark?"

It wasn't that the sun had gone down. The shadows all around them seemed to come to life, creeping towards them all, covering everything as they blotted out the light around them. It wasn't like normal shadow at all… but like a soft, velvety cloth. It reminded Harry of something he'd seen before, but he couldn't think of it. He could place it.. Not until he heard a soft moan. He could hear them… he looked around, he wasn't the only one. Everyone was hearing them.

"What's that!" "Who is that?"

Pansy moved to let go, but Wu Fei Yelled. "Don't. Let go and you won't be coming back!"

She grasped Draco's hand tighter. "What is this?"

Then it clicked. "It's the veil! That really was you!" He looked at Duo. The braided pilot had his eyes closed in concentration as the darkness overwhelmed them all. Duo only grinned at his response. They were all surrounded by nothing. The darkness was all encompassing. It seemed like they were standing there for hours, with the darkness flicking at the feet, hands trying to grasp at their legs, pull them away. Harry could swear he heard the sound of a train, and then there was light. Wu Fei let go and started walking towards it.

"Well. Come on, we don't have all day." Wu Fei seemed determined to get out of this place, but certainly wouldn't let any discomfort show. Harry stalled just a moment as they each headed for the light, stopping by Duo to look at him. "That was you. At the station."

Duo just shrugged, grinning a knowing smile. "Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. They say death takes many forms, kid. He's gotta look like yer best pal to make you comfortable and that can't be Ron. He'd be a crappy death." Duo grinned playfully and headed for the light as well. "Come on, can't keep the door open forever."

The two of them exited out of a destroyed stone building and into what looked like ancient native ruins. The jungle surrounded them on all sides and the weather was sweltering. Already Draco and Hermione were casting cooling charms while Blaise and Neville were looking for specific plants that would help ward off the insects.

Draco looked at Duo with a glare. "What in the bloody fuck was that!"

Duo just laughed as he fell on his ass, looking more than a little out of breath. "The Duo Express. I already told you that."

Wu Fei took pity on the young heir though. "Duo can open doors to the nether and use them to travel between locations. The longer the distance the more draining." He tossed his brother an energy bar. "It's how his magic manifested. All newtypes have some unique ability, that is his."

Hermione's interest suddenly piqued. "Newtype. You mentioned that before. What exactly is a newtype. How do they compare to wizards?"

Duo grinned. "Well, remember how we mentioned that wizard's can't recharge in space cause of the lack of terran magic and what not?"

"Yes, you also mentioned that there was magic there, just that it was somehow different from the magic here on earth." She nodded

Wu Fei, taking on his professor's tone, continued as Duo snacked on his bar of chocolaty calories.

"The magic of space is the magic of the cold void. It is harsh and unforgiving, where as the magic of earth is warm and tender. One caresses the soul and accepts any who call to it while the other accepts only the strong. Newtypes are the children of those wizards who stayed in space, despite the unforgiving nature that is the magic of space. Our magic internalized into unique abilities, instead of spells and rituals. Most spacers who discovered newtypes assumed the abilities were some form of evolution. Psychic powers born of being born in Zero-G, hence the term, newtypes. A new type of human. There are very few terran wizards in space, so there was no one to correct them. Our kind have been around for quite some time now, funny that in space, there is no need for a statute of secrecy."

Duo chuckled. "Although, we're still pretty rare. You gotta be born natural to be one and lots of people reproduce the boring way these days… least the ones who can afford to. Plus with the all the political strife, there was never time for people to worry much about the overly sensitive types who could feel a little better or tell if someone was lying."

"Or travel through death's dimension…" Draco deadpanned.

"Yea.. well, i never got caught."

"So how come you can do spells then?" Ron asked.

"We're still human and we're still related to the wizards of earth. To be honest, most assumed we couldn't. Not until we came to earth and she started filling us up with her own energies. Turns out terran magic mixes quite well in newtypes, where as magic of the void doesn't mix at all with terran wizards."

"That's bloody unfair." Ron grumbled. "Getting two kinds of magic."

Duo grinned. "Yea, It's what makes me so awesome."

"Then you have some unique power as well, professor." Hermione asked, curious about what it could be. After all, none of the others had shown any form of special magic… besides Quatre and she'd rather not remember that.

Wu Fei chose not to answer. "They were here." He stood up from examining some tracks.

"Three plus a snake. Looks like there was a small skirmish…"

"How can you tell?" asked Harry.

"The environment has been recently disturbed, plus tracks and blood." He motioned just past him, a rather grisly scene in the jungle.

"But where are the bodies?" Hermione asked, then immediately regretted asking.

"Where do you think, we're hunting a snake." Draco mentioned. "Duo, you mentioned a Basilisk. You were joking, right?"

Duo shook his head, waving the group over to a wall. Inscribed in it was a rather telling picture. A massive snake, a man beside it speaking with a snake's tongue. The snake's eyes glowing and before them, maybe people dying.

"They definitely had a parselmouth here and Basilisks are practically immortal. No, chances are good Riddle left his snake at this temple for a reason." Wu Fei suddenly swiveled to his right, drawing his wand and raised a shield. A green light hit the shield, shattering it and Wu Fei fell to the ground, still...
