Hi everyone! I'm sorry I kept you waiting for so long. The last month was so hectic as it always is for those working at school and dealing with the end of the school year. Now, enough with my excuses - it's time for the final and the longest chapter of my story. Have fun!
Chapter 10
The minute the door closed behind them, Lucifer turned to Chloe.
"Detective, are you sure you're holding up?" He asked really concerned about her.
"Yes, Lucifer. I told you so a moment ago."
"I know you did but I'm just checking whether you did this for everyone else not to worry about you." He waited eagerly for her answer.
There was a moment of silence. "Lucifer," she touched his cheek, "to tell you the truth, I heard some things today that I'm now wondering about and I know we have to talk about them, probably the sooner the better, but I also believe in us. Together we can do anything." She said and kissed him.
She tried to put all the emotions she was experiencing in that kiss – a sense of insecurity, fear but also excitement and unconditional love. He could feel them all and he vowed to himself he would do whatever it takes to make her happy.
"Okay. I'll take you home and you'll get the rest you definitely need." He said and started walking.
"Oh, Lucifer, wait." Chloe grabbed his arm and he stopped. "By 'home' I meant your place and what I definitely need more than rest, what we both need, is to clear everything up between us." She stated in a confident manner. He looked delighted at her words.
"Okay, Lux it is. C'mon my lady, your carriage is waiting." He gave her a charming smile and extended his arm.
"Why, thank you, my knight in shining armor. That's very kind of you." She took his arm and giggled.
They went to his car, Lucifer opened the door for her and helped her get inside. Then he hopped in, turned on the ignition and drove towards Lux. Chloe couldn't shake off a strange feeling that they had to go there, that's why she chose Lucifer's place rather than her own.
It was quite late in the evening, there was some traffic as people were going to the clubs, so it took them quite a lot of time to reach the night club. He parked the car in the private car park behind the building, got out and went to open the side door. When he did that, the view he saw surprised him a lot.
"Chloe?" He asked but he didn't get the answer as apparently she fell asleep during the ride. While they were driving, she was facing away from him so he didn't even notice. He thought she had a lot on her mind and he didn't want to bother her.
He bent down and touched her cheek lovingly. "Chloe." As soon as she felt his touch, she came round and tried to open her eyes but couldn't make herself do it.
"Mhmm," she mumbled, "are we… there yet?" She had a feeling they weren't moving anymore so they had to reach their destination.
Lucifer chuckled at her words. "Yes, we're at Lux. Come on, let's get you inside." He said, lifted her from her car seat as if she weighed nothing and carried her inside.
"Lucifer, don't. I can walk myself." Chloe protested weakly. She finally managed to open her eyes but only for a moment.
"I'm sorry, my dear but I think in your state of exhaustion you're not able to walk on your own." He stated and he got them into the elevator.
"What? What are you talking about?" She whispered.
"Don't worry. That's normal. It seems to me that you're experiencing a post-rush drop in blood sugar. You know, when you're highly stressed you're full of adrenaline and when the stressful situation is over, it drops and hence your lack of energy." Lucifer said.
"Oh, thank you doctor for your interesting lecture." She mumbled against his chest. "Lucifer, I wanted to talk to you."
They reached the penthouse and the elevator door opened. Lucifer stepped inside and he instantly felt something was off, like someone was there. His first priority was Chloe and her safety. In case something happened, she was in no shape of fighting, especially someone not human. In his mind, he was already playing every possible scenario of not letting her get hurt.
"Yes, I know. But I'm afraid, Detective, that unfortunately, we'll have to postpone it till tomorrow." He said. She had her eyes opened and noticed that he was scanning the room while talking to her.
"Lucifer, what's wrong?" She asked with rising alarm.
He cursed under his breath. He hoped she wouldn't recognize the change in his behavior but with her remarkable skills it was simply impossible.
"I don't know yet, " he said and carried her to the bedroom, "but I want you to stay here for now." With that he put her gently on the bed.
"No, Lucifer." She desperately protested and tried to get up but he stopped her at once.
"Don't argue, please. Just trust me." He whispered and gave her a chaste kiss on the lips.
Then he turned and cautiously went back to the living room. When he stepped down the stairs, he received a powerful blow on the jaw that made him see the stars. Normally, he wouldn't mind seeing them for real as he literally made them and was very fond of them but this time it made him annoyed.
"Well, well," he touched his jaw and massaged it, "I assumed that by this time, you would have been over your utopian dream of getting yourself a soul from Michael, Mazikeen." He said that in a condescending manner, only earning another hard blow, this time to his chest, as she kicked him with all her might. He flied through the air and dropped near the piano.
"You know, Maze, you can't hurt me as I'm immortal again." He said, still lying on the floor.
She snorted at that. "Well, at least I can try." She said with a smirk and two hellish blades appeared shining in her hands. She launched another vicious attack at Lucifer but this time he was a bit faster, he grabbed her legs and in a moment she was knocked on the floor too. They started struggling.
After the initial shock, Lucifer was fighting back and it was evident that with every second he was getting more furious. They were so focused on their confrontation that they didn't hear a quiet gasp coming from the bedroom. They were back on their feet exchanging blows fervently as Maze didn't want to accept her defeat that easily. Lucifer's rage reached its height, he grabbed her neck and put the blade to her throat, ready for the final act. Just as Maze was trying to push her other blade in his side, they heard a terrified scream.
"Stop!" It was Chloe standing at the top of the stairs, her eyes wide with dread. "Please, stop. I don't want you to kill each other." She pleaded.
"Chloe, you'd better go back cause I don't want you to get hurt." Maze stated through gritted teeth.
Lucifer glanced at Chloe. "As odd as it may sound, I agree with Mazikeen. Detective, wait for me in the bedroom, it won't be long now." He said and looked back at the demon, bracing himself to finally end it all.
"No, I won't." Chloe said, stepping down the stairs, in spite of not feeling well and moving closer. "Lucifer, you're not like this. You can't kill Maze."
Lucifer looked at her, his eyebrows raised in surprise. "Oh, really? Please, do tell me, my dear, why I shouldn't end this demon's life. Why should I forget about her numerous betrayals, plotting against me with Michael and trying to kill me?" He asked, his voice sounding bitter and resentful.
"That's easy," Chloe replied, "because you care for her too much."
Her response baffled him to such an extent that he stuttered. "Wh…What?"
"You told me that you spent millennia down in Hell with Maze at your side, that you could count on her. Remember when you came to Earth, she saved your life several times and…" Chloe dropped her gaze and added quietly, "she helped you find me after Michael abducted me."
Lucifer swallowed hard at this painful memory. He felt his rage towards Maze slowly subsiding and the need to kill her vanishing into thin air. He took away the blade, let her go and stepped away.
"I didn't do it for Lucifer." Maze finally spoke. "I did it for you." They stared at each other and Chloe nodded her head.
"Yes, that's right. You didn't do it for yourself or for Lucifer but for me. And you know why?" Chloe asked. "Because I'm your friend and you really care about your friends."
Maze didn't seemed to get the idea what the woman was hinting at.
"Maze, I know what this whole fighting was about." She said and took her hands. "You allied with Michael because he promised to give you something you have strived for so much – a soul." Maze's eyes widened at this notion. "But you know what? I'm certain you don't need it anymore." Chloe said and smiled.
"Why?" It was the only word Maze was able to utter.
"Because, judging by your actions, you already have it."
"That's outrageous. A demon can't grow a soul." Maze said.
"And yet you managed to do so." Chloe spoke softly. Maze looked like she wasn't much certain of this. "Just think about it, would someone without a soul be ready to sacrifice everything and put her life at stake to save Linda? Or be fond of a human child, have fun while trick-or-treating or worry about Trixie's reaction after she heard those hurting words? Of course, not." Chloe stated and she got emotional at once. "Your soul gives you the ability to feel deep affection for those who are dear to you and I must say, Maze, we are so lucky to have you as part of our lives." Chloe couldn't hold back any longer and she burst into tears.
Maze was bewildered and at first didn't know how to react. After her teaming with Michael against Lucifer, she would have never expected to hear something like that, especially from Chloe. She assumed she would detest her because of her attempt at killing her loved one. And here she was, instead of being hostile to her, Chloe showed her emotions and tried to convince her of possessing a soul. Now she could only do one thing which seemed right at the moment. She threw away the blade and hugged her friend really tight. Chloe smiled and sighed at the gesture.
"Thank you for all your help, Maze." She whispered and they stayed like that for a moment.
"You're welcome." The demon replied.
Lucifer was looking at the sight in front of him feeling overwhelmed. He knew perfectly well that his Detective was strong and brave but what he saw lately was beyond anything. In the last days she was abducted by a celestial, she had to face God along with her abductor and she made it. What is more, she stood by his side and supported him during the dinner and now, despite her temporary physical inability, she prevented something horrifying that could have happened and did something equally or even more important for Maze – made her realize she belonged there and had friends who deeply cared for her. That's what Maze was really looking for all this time, that she wasn't a second best and that her friends wouldn't abandon her like her mother did.
Lucifer wished he had this gift of deep empathy like Chloe had. She always knew what to say, be it in private life or at work with suspects and witnesses. He must tell her how truly special she was.
Finally, Chloe stepped out of the embrace. "Sorry for getting so emotional." She grinned sheepishly and sniffled. "I guess, all these things that happened to me lately and this dinner with God got back to me."
"Hey, don't worry. Look at me." Maze pointed at her face with tears streaming down her cheeks. "Congratulations, you made a demon cry. That's something big."
"Yes but a demon with a soul." Chloe added and smiled.
"Mhmm," Maze pondered, "you know, maybe you're right. Maybe it's really true."
"I'm sure of it."
"So, dinner with God?" Maze asked. "How was it?"
"Weird…" Chloe looked at Lucifer, all the events coming back to her at once. "But I survived."
"Of course, you did and you were impressive." Lucifer finally spoke and he put his arm around her, drawing her near. Chloe leaned into him right away.
Seeing them both like this – together at last, after overcoming all the obstacles, made the demon feel, this time not jealous but happy for her friends.
"I'm glad you've finally made it, you truly belong together. It was obvious from the beginning but I couldn't accept it at first. And then when I observed Lucifer with your each solved case, how he grew attached to you, how he was ready to sacrifice himself…"
Hearing this, Lucifer sent her a horrified look and shook his head. Maze got the message and didn't finish her thought.
"As your roommate, Chloe, I realized you also started to care for Lucifer very much, although initially you wouldn't admit it." Maze stated and smiled. "You're true soulmates. I hope you appreciate the feeling you share." She added, her eyes once again shining with tears.
"Yes, we do." Lucifer said and looked at Chloe lovingly.
"It's funny, though. God has just told us something very similar." Chloe chuckled.
"If I sound like God, I think it's time for me to go home." Maze snorted. "I'm sorry, Lucifer. I shouldn't have listened to Michael." She became serious again.
"That's okay, Mazikeen. I know what were your motives." He said that and hugged her.
Chloe was the next one to embrace her. "Remember, we're your friends no matter what." She whispered.
"Thanks." Maze said, she was visibly touched. She finally said her goodbye, went to the elevator and smiled at the pair before the door closed.
"You're amazing, you know?" Lucifer whispered and spread his arms. Chloe instantly stepped closer and clung to him.
"You're not bad, either." She murmured and closed her eyes. She knew she could stay like this forever.
"Well, I mean every time I'm with you, I admire your strength and this ability to sense others' emotions and the knowledge of how to act around them."
"That's not much and sometimes it's not enough." She said quietly.
"Oh, quite the contrary, Detective. You've just helped Maze. For real. You were able to do something no one else could. You gave her hope and a sense of belonging. The two things she needed most. That's a lot." Lucifer said and went quiet for a moment.
"So, how are you feeling now, my dear?" He moved away a little so he could have a closer look at her.
"Much better." Chloe replied.
"Are you sure? Maybe you should lie down a bit?"
"No, I'm fine." She answered. "Actually, I could even have a drink."
His eyebrows rose in surprise. "All right. Although I don't know if it's wise for you to have alcohol right now."
She gave him a look that said everything. He raised his hands in surrender. "Okay, anything specific?"
"I'd like some wine, please." She said.
Lucifer moved to his drink bar to look for the glasses and a bottle of wine. Chloe drew nearer and leaned on the counter, observing him.
"So, how are you feeling about everything, Lucifer?" She knew meeting his Father after all this time affected him more than he would like to admit.
He sighed deeply. It wasn't easy for him to talk about his feelings. Sometimes he couldn't even name them. "Well, I still can't believe my Dad was really here. After my rebellion, back in Hell, I remember waiting for millennia for any word or sign from him. But there was none. And although there were demons and a lot was going on all the time, I felt empty and lonely. When today I saw my Dad interact with Charlie, his affection and care just…" He stopped looking for the glasses, leaned on the counter and hung his head.
"It hurt you." She finished for him. "I saw the look on your face in that moment."
He looked up and met her gaze. "Don't get me wrong. I'm happy Dad met his grandson and he reacted that way but I couldn't stop thinking that I didn't get even a fraction of it and it hurt so much." He whispered, tears slowly welling up in his eyes.
"I heard that some parents who were distant and cold to their children, suddenly become doting grandparents." She covered his hands with her own. "Lucifer, you know it doesn't mean your Dad didn't care for you. He probably didn't know how to show affection or didn't realize you needed it."
"I know but still…" He said. Chloe noticed a lonely tear escaped his eye and rolled down his cheek.
"Oh, honey." She said and rushed to him, enveloping him in a hug.
Lucifer smiled when he noticed the endearment she used. "There were so many things I wanted to tell him and now he's gone again."
"Somehow I've got a feeling it's not the last visit of your Father here on Earth." Chloe stated.
After a while they pulled apart and Lucifer continued preparing their drinks. He poured the wine and they took the glasses and went on the balcony. They stood there in comfortable silence sipping their wine.
Finally, Chloe started. "Well, as cryptic as he seems to be, your Dad gave us quite a lot of information."
"To tell you the truth, I didn't expect him to be so open." Lucifer admitted.
"Yeah, at least we learnt what he thinks about our relationship." Chloe said.
Lucifer smiled but then he became serious. "And he told us about Trixie."
"You're right and what God said about her ability, finally shed some light on her behavior." She replied. "I always thought she was just smart when it came to others' feelings but now I know it's a gift. And she'll have to learn how to deal with it." She stated, he could hear worry in the tone of her voice.
"It seems to me, she's been coping with it quite well for now." Lucifer said grinning. "And I know that whenever she faces any problems, she can always turn to you for help."
Chloe nodded her head.
"Coming back to the dinner, I must say that I'm extremely proud of Trixie. The way she stood up to Michael and how she saw him through was amazing." Lucifer said.
"Plus her reaction to God himself. She wasn't afraid of him at all and she totally backed you up there." Chloe agreed with him.
"Yeah, that was something unbelievable." He whispered. "She's a great kid."
"Yes, she is." Chloe agreed and leaned her head on Lucifer's shoulder. He looked at her and smiled at her gesture. His left arm went around her and he brought her closer to him.
She sighed looking at the city beneath her. "It's so peaceful up here." Then she gazed at thousands of stars shining in the sky above them. He noticed this and whispered. "It took me quite a lot of time and effort to make them this bright."
"Huh?" Chloe looked puzzled.
He pointed up. "The stars. I created them."
"Really? They're beautiful. You definitely have to tell Trixie. She loves watching them. Ever since her early years she's been into stars. She often begged me to stay up late and watch the night sky together from our backyard."
"Oh, I will." He answered, already formulating a plan to buy Trixie a telescope and take her on a trip to the observatory.
Chloe sighed deeply. "Hey. You must be tired. Let's go to bed." Lucifer said.
"No, it's not that."
"What is it? I can see something's on your mind." He tried to act sensibly.
She hesitated. He could tell it wasn't easy for her. "It's just… a thing that's been bothering me lately." She moved so she could face him and meet his eyes.
"Go on."
"Remember, when we were investigating the dead DJ case and after Jed's studio blew up, you told me that you went to Hell and back for me twice. Michael also mentioned something similar. And a moment ago, I had a feeling Maze almost revealed it but you stopped her." Chloe said and took his hands. "Lucifer, please. You know you can tell me everything. Just don't let me wonder about it forever. It's like a torture." She pleaded and dropped her gaze.
Lucifer swallowed hard. Deep down he knew this conversation was coming sooner or later. He managed to postpone it for years and now the time has finally come. He didn't start at once, pondering what to say to her. He lifted her chin and their eyes met. The worried look on her face told him how much toll it was taking on her.
"Chloe, I'm sorry. I was trying to avoid this subject for so long. First, I didn't want you to freak out and find out that I was the Devil and then my aim was to prevent the situation when the feeling of gratitude would lead you to me."
"Lucifer, what are you trying to tell me?" She asked looking clueless.
He sighed. "That's true. I really went to Hell and back for you twice. Well, actually it was three times to be exact."
Chloe's eyes widened in disbelief. "Three? I only know about the one when you went back there to rule Hell in order to prevent demons to flood the Earth." She whispered, images from that fateful night in this very place still vivid in her mind.
"That was the last time. The first one was quite early on in our partnership, namely the day when Malcolm kidnapped Trixie."
He heard Chloe drew in a breath. Despite a couple of years passing by, she perfectly remembered what she went through then. Suddenly, it dawned on her. "I think I know when it could be. I went to that warehouse to give Malcolm the money and get Trixie back. There was a gunshot and I thought he killed you."
"You're right. I was trying to use my mojo on him and he tricked me. He shot me, I didn't expect him to do that." He paused for a moment. "When I was lying on the floor, blood flowing out from my body, feeling weaker with every second, all I could think about was you. I feared Malcolm would kill you and Trixie. So, I did the only thing I thought could help – I asked my Dad for a favor."
"What?" She whispered. She realized how much it must have cost him to address his Father.
"I asked him to take care of you in exchange for me being a perfect son and following his holly orders." He muttered.
Chloe gasped. "Oh, Lucifer." She touched his cheek lovingly. "I imagine what it must have felt like for you to do such thing after everything you went through."
"I knew there was no other way. It felt natural." He added with a sheepish grin.
"So what happened next? Did your Dad want you to go back to Hell?"
"Yes." He nodded his head.
"But you came back at once?" It was hard for her to follow.
"I died and went to Hell. I didn't see or hear my Dad. He was as cryptic as ever. There I saw the gate was opened and I knew someone escaped and came to Earth. I realized that was what I was expected to do - to bring this soul back there. That's why I returned." He told her.
"Lucifer, can you tell me who was that soul?" Chloe asked fearful of the answer.
He knew it was time to tell her everything. "That was my Mum."
His words left her astonished. "How could God be so cruel and make you do such thing to your Mum? But you didn't do it, did you?"
"No, I decided to give her punishment here on Earth among people she detested so much and that was what worried me the most." He sighed. Now he knew really well where it would lead them to.
"Cause you didn't return God's favor."
"Exactly. I feared Dad would back out of his part of the deal too."
"And thus I'll be in danger again." She said quietly.
He didn't say anything but nodded his head. Now, everything made perfect sense. She remembered Lucifer acting weird after her freak car accident. He fussed over her all the time and tried to explain it to her then but she didn't believe him.
"The accident. Was it really a warning from God?"
"I thought so at that moment but it turned out it was Uriel's doing." As soon as these words left his mouth, his facial expression changed. He seemed distant and broken. All the events of that time came back to him. She could tell it was something extremely painful for Lucifer.
"Honey, if it's too much for you, we don't have to talk about it." Chloe said, not wanting to add any more distress to this day full of emotions. She touched his arm to give him her support.
"No!" He yelled with anger and shook off her hand. Then he met her gaze and saw her scared look. He didn't mean to hurt her again so he took her hands and brought them to his lips.
"I'm sorry, Chloe." He murmured. "No more secrets and I'm done with hiding. I want you to finally know the truth, no matter how much it hurts me every time I recall this event. It's so vivid in my memory as if it happened yesterday."
"So who's Uriel?" She asked quietly.
Lucifer sighed deeply. "Uriel… was my brother. He had the ability to create patterns. He would move an object a little bit and eventually it would lead to a catastrophy." He stated and focused on Chloe's face. She didn't say anything, just stared at him. 'So far so good,' he thought. What was about to be revealed, was much worse to grasp.
"As I said, at first I thought Uriel led to your accident as a message from Dad but soon I found out he acted on his own when I saw through his evil plan. He brought Azrael's blade with him and his real intention was to kill our Mother. Somehow he discovered how much you meant to me and he treated you as a means to an end. If I gave him Mum, he would let you live."
Chloe was speechless. She never expected something like that to hear. 'I can't believe I thought Michael was the most evil brother,' she pondered.
Lucifer continued. "You see, no matter what I chose, it was bad. There wasn't a perfect solution. We fought, even Maze came to help me but Uriel was fast and he could predict my moves. Just as he almost beat me, he threatened to kill you and then something snapped in me. I couldn't let him do it no matter what." His voice cracked and he started shaking. "I took the blade and plunged it right into him." He whispered. He let go of her hands, stepped away and turned back, not being able to face her. "Now you know and I won't blame you if you'll hate me." He stated.
Lucifer's words shook Chloe to the core. She never realized how much he went through for her. First, choosing between his Mother and her and then killing his own brother in order to save her. She couldn't even imagine how much pain and self-hatred he had to deal with at that time and evidently still now. She saw it in his posture – his head was hanging low and his shoulders were hunched. She came closer and gently touched his back.
"Lucifer." She whispered but he didn't flinch a bit. "Lucifer, look at me, please." Chloe pleaded.
Slowly, he turned around and what she saw, broke her heart. He was wearing his Devil face again which meant he was back to blaming himself. She had a feeling it wouldn't be an easy task to reverse it.
"Lucifer, listen to me. I will never hate or judge you, no matter what happens. I just wish you had told me then. Maybe I couldn't have done much but you wouldn't have been alone with it." She stated.
"I wasn't alone. There was my Mum, Amenadiel and Linda, that's when she found out the truth about me being the Devil." He said, staring at her with great intensity. "But you have no idea how much I wanted to share it with you. When it happened, my first thought was to go to you but I couldn't. I couldn't burden you with all this mess. You had your life with Trixie and I thought for a very long time that you didn't need me at your side. That I… wasn't worth of you." He lowered his voice. "Sometimes, even now… I still think so."
Chloe's heart stopped at his words. How could he believe that? "Oh, Lucifer," she touched his Devil face, "don't say that, please. I love you so much and you're everything to me." As she said that, she knew taking some action would help him better than words so she drew closer and kissed him. She took him by surprise because he didn't expect her to touch or kiss him while he was wearing his red face. Soon he was kissing her back, letting himself be surrounded by her strength, love and affection. These feelings made his face finally go back to normal. When they pulled apart to draw in air, Chloe noticed how shaken he still seemed to be, his eyes full of tears.
"Lucifer, are you all right?" She asked, although she knew the answer.
"I… I'm overwhelmed with these emotions but I think I'm a bit better." He said and the corners of his mouth lifted a little.
"Lucifer, please don't think about yourself this way anymore." She begged him, hating all this turmoil it was causing him.
He breathed out heavily. "I can't promise that but you know what? I can promise you that I will try and every time I have any doubts about myself, I'll recall your words and our kiss."
She blushed and saw the truth in his eyes. "Okay." It was all she said as she moved forward and clung to his lips with all the passion she had for him. He was gladly experiencing this with her. She was caressing the nape of his head and then her hands travelled to his back. Lucifer was enjoying the sensation as he ran his fingers through her soft hair. She immediately moaned at this feeling while he freely roamed over her body and stopped at her hips.
"Chloe." He broke their kiss and murmured.
"Mhmm, yes?" She breathed out, already longing for his lips.
"We haven't finished our conversation yet." He stated and a few seconds later she froze in his arms as it dawned on her.
"The second time." She muttered.
He nodded his head. "Yes but I don't know if you're up to hearing it. It won't be pleasant." He said, unsure if he made the right decision to remind her of it.
"Tell me." He instantly recognized that look and tone of voice. Chloe seemed to be focused and straight-forward as she would be working on a case.
He swallowed. He had a feeling his confession would kill the romantic mood at once. He hesitated.
"Lucifer, just go with it." She said, not trusting herself to have enough strength for it.
"All right." He finally spoke. "Remember professor Carlisle?"
Oh, she remembered him perfectly. He almost got her killed with the poison. Almost… Lucifer never told her what really happened then, how he managed to get the formula for the antidote. And then it all clicked. She gasped.
"Oh my God, Lucifer. Tell me you didn't do that." She whispered, shaking her head frantically. "Tell me you didn't get yourself killed on purpose just to save me."
He didn't say anything, just looked at her in a loving way. She started sobbing and she brought her hand to her mouth. He felt so bad for hurting her.
"Lucifer, it's something completely different from when Malcolm shot you. This is killing yourself."
"Well, technically, since I didn't have my wings back there, I did put those electrodes to my chest myself but I had some help from Maze and Linda to revive me. Amenadiel was watching over and he didn't let anyone move you from your room. Ella and Dan went to look for the ingredients. As I said back there, it was a team work."
"Yes but it was you who died and went to Hell." She said under her breath.
"You're right. But all in all, my Mum also died and helped bring me back from there."
"Lucifer, how could you do that? I wasn't worth it. If I had known, I wouldn't have let you take your own life."
"Listen to yourself. Now, who's using the same words?" He snorted and gently cupped her face. "Chloe Jane Decker, you were worth every single thing I did every time I saved your life. I did it because I love you and I couldn't bear the fact of not having you in my life." He sighed and she could see he was barely holding up. "Chloe, I can't help it that there is nothing I couldn't do for you."
"Lucifer." She whispered and burst into tears again. He enveloped her in a comforting hug.
"Shh… It's all right. I've got you." He murmured, trying to cease her sobs. She started shivering slightly so he stroked her back. It took Chloe a while to calm down. Her crying stopped and she took deep breaths to get hold of herself. The smell of his cologne and his loving touch brought tranquility to her mind. Judging by the change in her posture, he figured out that Chloe obviously recovered from her state of distress.
"Okay, let's get you finally into bed." He said and lifted her in his arms.
"Lucifer," she sniffled, "I told you I can walk myself."
"I know, Detective." He stated and took her inside. "But I guess I love carrying you around."
"All right, just remember not to carry me on the crime scene." She said and smiled, snuggling closer to his chest.
Lucifer chuckled. "Oh, I'll see if I can do that. I can imagine, it would make quite a show." She giggled hearing it.
He went through the living room and up the few stairs to the bedroom. Then he placed her gently on his bed and slid in beside her. They lay facing each other.
"Lucifer?" Chloe whispered and put her hand on his cheek.
"Yes?"
"Thank you for saving me and for being such important part of my life. You were there by my side wherever I needed you. Me and Trixie could always count on you. I love you Lucifer and I always will." She stated and kissed him.
"I love you too. Who would have thought five years ago that we'll be here?"
"Oh, actually you." Chloe chuckled and started playing with his hair. "You wanted to get me to bed from the beginning, as I recall."
"You're right but I never expected to fall in love with such an incredible and beautiful woman who loves me back and accepts me the way I am, even as the Devil."
She beamed at his words. Yes, it's been a long way for them since they've met. They have both changed a lot. Lucifer has transformed from being a selfish hedonist, not caring about other's feelings into a kind and affectionate person who would do anything in his might to protect those he loved. She evolved too. Five years ago, she didn't know where she stood with Dan, Trixie, her mum or with her life in general. It seemed so full of chaos. She felt responsible for every single thing. When she encountered Lucifer, her whole world became more colorful. Even though at first she was annoyed with his constant inappropriate behavior, with passing time she learned how to deal with it and one day on that balcony, she surprisingly realized she couldn't imagine her life without him. Maybe it's hard to believe but he made her a better person. Thanks to him, she became more open and loosened up.
Chloe moved closer and their lips brushed again. The moment their bodies touched, sparks started flying.
"Chloe, are you sure you're up for this tonight? You've been through a lot. We don't have to…" He said but was cut off by her rapid answer.
"Lucifer," she locked eyes with him, "I've never been so sure about anything in my life. So just stop talking and kiss me."
"Okay, my darling. Your wish is my command." He said grinning mischievously. She crushed her lips on his and they gladly continued their long-awaited activities.
Sometime later, they were lying in each other's arms. Chloe seemed to be asleep, her breathing was deep and steady, her head was resting on his chest. Lucifer stayed awake. He didn't want to miss any second of holding the love of his life close to him. It was still hard to believe for him to be so lucky. Absent-mindedly, he started caressing her bare arm which was sprawled over his abdomen, barely touching her with his fingertips.
His thoughts went back to that day's events with all its revelations. He still couldn't believe that after waiting all his miserable life, he finally got what he really wanted – the love of this amazing woman resting in his arms. He glanced at Chloe's sleeping form. She finally seemed so peaceful and he knew she deserved that like no one else. He was also well aware of the fact that being a part of his twisted and messed up life would mean carrying a lot of weight on Chloe's shoulders. It would include keeping secrets from people, even those she cared for, like her mum or Ella, or putting her life on the line whenever it was necessary.
That last thing terrified him the most. It was obvious that as a mortal, when dealing with any celestial enemy, Chloe had small chances of winning, no matter how hard she fought. He realized it would be extremely hard for him to accept the risk of losing her but he had to admit that it was better than not having Chloe in his life at all. Despite everything, he was really grateful that his Dad put her in his path so that they could meet and be together in the end.
Lucifer looked up and spoke quietly. "Dad…" he swallowed, "I hope you can hear me. You left so suddenly and after all this news, I didn't even have time to talk to you. I really wanted to tell you so many things – that I missed you all this time and although I acted so hard on you, I'm very glad you came. You know, everything you said made me quite overwhelmed and the fact that I held a grudge against you and all those bad emotions towards you, building up through millennia, wasn't really of a much help during our family gathering. I just wish we had more time." Lucifer sighed.
"Chloe says she has a feeling your visit here wasn't the last one and I hope she's right." He glanced at her and a tiny smile appeared on his face. "I'd like to thank you for everything. You made me realize that my rebellion and your harsh reaction to it happened for a reason. Thanks to it, I landed in Hell and then I came here and met wonderful, caring people who soon became my friends and even family." He said and there was a short moment of silence.
"Thank you for Chloe." He continued quietly. "She means everything to me and I can't imagine my life without her now. Since I've met her, she's always been my priority. Please accept my endless gratitude for taking care of her when I couldn't. I promise we'll nurture this feeling we both share." He stated.
Now that he finally said those words to his Father, it seemed as if a giant weight was lifted off his shoulders. And although there was no response from God, Lucifer knew he heard him. He could even imagine his Father sitting on his heavenly throne in Silver City and wearing a big smile on his face while listening to his son's grateful speech. With this peaceful image in his mind, Lucifer finally let his eyelids close, enjoying the warmth emanating from Chloe's body and her soft skin under his fingertips.
As soon as sleep took over him, Chloe's eyes fluttered open and she smiled. After just being a witness to Lucifer addressing his Dad, she felt so happy for him, that he eventually achieved some kind of closure, even though God wasn't there personally.
"Thank you for everything. I'll keep an eye on your son." Chloe whispered and grinned. A sudden cold blow of air came into the room and she shuddered snuggling closer to Lucifer. She listened to his steady heartbeat and it finally lulled her to sleep. As a natural response, Lucifer pulled up the comforter and covered her up to her arms to make her warmer.
They were both in dreamland and they couldn't see the person standing in the darkness, in the middle of the living room. He was looking at the sleeping pair, a radiant smile never leaving his lips. Hearing Lucifer's words, made him once again so proud of his son, of who he became, considering his long and painful way he came through. God also realized that helping John and Penelope Decker having Chloe and putting her in Lucifer's path was one of his best iplans. Now it was up to them what they would do with their feelings. Knowing Lucifer and Chloe, he had no doubts it wouldn't always be easy but he had faith in both of them, that even if they lost their way and something threatened their relationship, in the end they would find each other again and they'd achieve happiness because they deserve it.
With that thought, God decided to leave them alone and give them some privacy. For a moment, heavenly lightness flooded the penthouse and when it faded, the living room was empty again and the only sound present was Chloe's and Lucifer's soft breathing.
The end.
That's it. That was the last chapter. I'm so happy I managed to write it. I'm still amazed at the length of the whole story. As I mentioned before, when I started writing it, I thought it would be only one chapter but it grew much longer. I spent a lot of time on it - I've been writing it for almost three months every day. Sometimes it was just a couple of sentences, others - several pages. All in all, it finished at 121 pages in a4 notebook:)
I'd like to thank all the readers out there, along with those who favorited or followed me and my story. And most of all, I'm so grateful to those who wrote reviews. I really enjoyed reading them and they cheered me up so much. You're awesome! Once again, I'm sorry for any mistakes I surely made.
It was a pleasure to write for you. I must admit I have some ideas for continuation of this story but I can't promise anything. So thanks again and see you in the future (hopefully).
