They had settled into school like they always did. Their holiday long prank! The feast had to be cut short when all of the snake houses table seemingly lost all of their clothes in the middle of it! It was a simple prank with that help of the Weasley Twins and Harry's relationship with the house elves but it had been quite the spectacle. Professor Snape of Slytherin house had been furious while he screamed for his students to retreat to their house. Of course Harry wasn't so cruel. He made sure that all of the students under age had their undergarments.
Today was the first day of classes and Harry couldn't have been less excited. He knew most of the spells they would be going over this year and of course his mum had made him study for his NEWTS in advance. Yeah there were pranks to pull and cup to win but they seemed insignificant right now. He didn't know what he was going to do.
Only months before he had been given several contracts to play quidditch professionally. Of course he had been happy that he got them. He had earned those contracts by playing his heart out for years not because his name was Harry Potter. It was one of the few things he could call his own. Whenever he completed a spell correctly it was because he was powerful, whenever he displayed an unknown spell it was because he had his families libraries. Nothing was ever because of him. Some people even questioned his new position as Head Boy which he found laughable. Who else could it have been!
He had won the tournament but that was expected of him not to mention it was a few years ago now. He couldn't help but feel like nobody actually cared.
He had done his best to set himself apart. He had been the best quidditch player the school had ever seen. He had displayed spell work that the professors hadn't seen in their lives and it seemed like all anyone cared about was him defeating Voldemort. Which of course he didn't even remember.
He knew Ron, Neville, and Luna were real friends but other than that he wasn't so sure. From the day he arrived he had been swarmed with offers of friendship. He had known Neville his whole life and he considered the man his brother. While he met Ron on the first day and they had instantly clicked. Luna well… they had an interesting history that he didn't want to think of too much. But she was also one of his closest friends.
Now he sat in Moony's class hearing the typical day one discussion. It got shorter every year but it was still a drag.
"I have a special announcement. Listen close because this is important. There will be a competition this year hosted by the ministry…"
His head rose instantly to meet his uncle's gaze. Everyone knew Harry was no stranger to competition. He had competed in quidditch since he was eleven he had become the youngest and reining Triwizard Champion and he was now Head Boy of Hogwarts! He had came, saw, and conquered each of his obstacles. This would be no exception.
"… spell creation was a lost art it seemed. Of course purebloods had their own spell crafters but for a long time we have not seen anything new and inventive. So the ministry would like students to participate in creating their own spells! The winners will get to meet Lily Potter and will be awarded fifty thousand galleons!" Remus concluded.
There were whispers among the students and Remus smiled at his class that was buzzing with anticipation. That was a lot of money! Maybe not by his own standards or his families standards but for most that was life changing money! Not to mention the recognition.
"I will have parchment at the door if you are interested." Remus chimed in before continuing his lesson.
Of course most of the students couldn't stop thinking about what their professor had said. When class let out most if not all of the students grabbed it.
"Fifty thousand galleons mate! That's wicked!" Ron said stuffing the parchment into his robes.
"Yeah and you'd get to meet my mum." Harry laughed. He loved his friend, but he knew he had no chance of winning the competition if he even ended up entering. His parents hadn't mentioned anything about this but he wasn't surprised. It wouldn't have been exactly fair of him to know during the summer and have time to prepare. Not that he wouldn't have been pleased with extra time but he snickered to himself thinking about his Mum dying to tell him. She was always excitable when it came to her work just like his Dad.
"We have some time before charms we should check this out." Harry said flashing the parchment.
"Maybe there will be some breakfast left?" Ron replied.
Harry rolled his eyes before they made their way to the great hall. There was breakfast left over and while Ron loaded up Harry sat down and opened the parchment eagerly.
