Chapter 10 - Well goodbye then... I guess

It was four in the morning when the door banged open again. Jacob started awake and clambered to his feet unsteadily, turning to the door with a growl. I rolled my eyes at him. He was still half asleep and in no position to fight anything.

'Sit down, Jacob. Before you hurt yourself.' I muttered, pulling his arm and sitting him down next to me again. He let me pull him down, but he did put his arm around my shoulders, to draw me into his body for protection.

Rosalie stood in the doorway. Her face was a stony cold mask and I frowned at it. What was going on?

'Rose?' Angela asked. 'What's going on?'

'I've been reassigned.' She said. Her voice was cold and I suppressed a shudder.

'What do you mean reassigned?' I asked confused.

'I've gotten a promotion. I'm heading to New York.'

I frowned and looked at Angela, who had the same incredulous expression on her face. 'New York? What's in New York?' Angela asked.

'A new group of vampires wanting to work with us.' Rosalie said shrugging.

'Are you sure you want this?' I asked. I was getting suspicious. The timing just seemed too strange. After Rosalie almost wanted to murder Edward for what he did to me, she's suddenly reassigned out of state?

Rosalie gave a curt nod.

'What about Emmett?' I asked. 'is he going too?'

Rosalie shook her head. That made me frown even more. Mates were never separated. I frowned at her. Was that why she was so cold? Was Edward separating her form her mate because of me?

'Is this my fault?' I asked in a small voice. 'is Edward taking his anger at me out on you?'

Rosalie's eyes widened for a moment, and I swear it looked like she was about to hurl herself at me and hug me tightly, but instead her face resumed it's mask and she rolled her eyes at me. 'Not everything is about you.' she snapped. I recoiled, taken aback. 'I've asked for this transfer. I'm done.'

'Done?' Angela asked confused.

Rosalie nodded. 'I only came here as a curtsey. I dind't have to, you know. So I don't appreciate the third degree.'

'Well then don't let us stop you from living your new life, blondie.' Jacob growled, he tightened his arm around me.

Rosalie stared at him for a moment. then she turned on her heel and walked out of the room, slamming the door behind her. Angela and I looked at each other.

'What was that all about?' I asked her. Angela shrugged and shook her head.

'I don't know.'

We were all quiet for the rest of the morning, mulling everything over, letting Jacob's quiet snores be the only sound that filled the room. At eight o clock I poked Jacob awake. He had other duties to attend to after his guarding duty was up. He grunted and snored a bit more then his eyes opened and focussed on me.

'Hey' he murmured, yawning widely and stretching his arms over his head. 'Did blondie come back?'

I shook my head. 'no.'

He grunted and stood up. 'weird.'

I nodded in agreement. 'You should go, Jacob.' I said.

He frowned at me, then glanced at the clock noticing the time. 'Actually, I think I'm going to stay right here.' He said, looking at Angela. Who nodded in agreement.

I sighed. Apparently I had lost the argument over getting a permanent babysitter. A knock at the door had Jacob on his feet again and moving to open the door before I could argue against him being my babysitter.

'Emmett.' He said gruffly.

'Jacob.' Emmett greeted just as gruffly in return.

Emmett stepped into the room and although it wasn't really possible for vampires, he looked tired. When his eyes landed on me though he forced a smile.

'Are you okay?' I asked him. he nodded once. 'is Rosalie gone?'

'She's fine.' He said looking away from my gaze. His fists clenched at his sides and I frowned at it. 'Are you ready?' he asked.

'I just need to change.' I murmured, taken aback by his demeanor.

'I'll wait.'

I left them in the room and headed to my closet to change into work out clothes. As I rifled through the drawers for some new socks, my hands bumped against something hard. I pushed the socks away and looked at the shape. It was a cellphone. I frowned and took it in my hands. I clicked the home button and the screen lit up. There was a message icon signalling there was an unread message. I clicked it slowly, still confused what it was. Then I read the message and my knees gave out.

Isabella. You have one month. – M

I gripped the side of the drawer tightly. Marcus. He'd said he'd bring me the first message. It seemed he was also giving me an ultimatum. If I didn't have useful information for him by the end of the month, I would most likely die.

I took in a shuddering breath, debating my options. I could delete the message, throw the phone away and just pretend I didn't get it. But Marcus would probably know. I could try and find out some information that would appease them, but I knew that was a lost cause. I was so far removed from any deciscion making, I still didn't know how many vampires were even in this coven. Edward held me strictly separate from any information or anything to do with the coven. I knew nothing and studdenly asking quesitons about it would only get me on Edward's shit list even more. I wasn't sure who I was more afraid of by this time either, Marcus or Edward.

So what other choices did I have? I could try and find Carlisle… explain to him what was going on and hope that he'd believe me and not make me out to be a traitor. Carlisle had seemed kind… but still he would probably speak to Edward about it, and that was something I didn't want.

Realization suddenly dawned. Was that what his outburst in the training hall had been about? Did he somehow know about marcus' taks for me? was that why he was such a dick? Did he think I was a spy for the volturi? I groaned.

How could I get out of this mess. I took a deep breath. I wanted nothing more to do with Volterra. That much I did know. So with a quivering finger I pressed the delete button on the message. The message disappeared and I quietly crept over to the window. I opened it and then quickly destroyed the phone. I snapped it in half easily enough and then I hurled the two pieces out of the window. Let them come for me I thought as I squared my shoulders. I was stronger now. I would fight now.

I quickly finished getting dressed, hoping the boys hadn't noticed anything, and took a deep breath to calm myself.

Jacob and Emmett had their heads close together and were speaking animatedly when I returned. Angela had left the room. I stopped in the doorway looking at them. They seemed to be arguing. They probably hadn't noticed I had been gone for longer than was usual. Jacob noticed me in the doorway and cleared his throat.

'I'll follow you to the training room and stay outside.' He said. Emmett gave a curt nod.

'That's not necessary, Jacob.' I said with a sigh.

Jacob shrugged. 'Call me Jake.' He said with a smile, walking over to me and putting his arm around my shoulder. Emmett's gaze zeroed in on it just like Rosalie had done yesterday. It made me feel uncomfortable. But I couldn't bring myself to step out from underneath Jacob's arm. The easy comfort he offered was nice and safe and in this court with Edward's crazy behaviour and mood swings, it was nice to be able to feel something firm and dependable and safe next to me.

We headed to the training room and spent a few hours training. It seemed Emmett had been more distracted than he'd let on, because I managed to get him on his back quite a few times, more than usual. When practise finished he didn't stay to joke around with me, but immediately headed out of the room after throwing me a quick see you tomorrow.

Jacob stepped into the room after Emmett left and quirked an eyebrow at me. I shrugged at him.

'So over to Kate?' he asked. I shook my head. I wasn't really in the mood for another session to be honest. I was on edge and jumpy and worried that Volturi guard were going to jump out at any second.

'I'd rather just walk around the gardens for a while.' I mumbled. Jacob nodded and offered his arm for me to take. I grinned at him and we headed into the gardens.

Jake did his best to distract me. He filled the silence with jokes, banter and crazy stories about what he and his pack were up to most days. It was nice, it was normal and I quickly settled into the conversation with a calm heart and a peaceful mind. It was amazing that Jacob seemed to have this calming effect on me. He was just easy to be around. Unlike Edward. Who was so hot and cold that I wasn't sure which way was up with him. I knew one thing though… as long as Jacob was here, this place wasn't so bad after all.

'I'm just saying, you should think about it.' Jake said, nudging me playfully in the side.'

He'd been convincing me to Join the wolves, instead of the vampires. I rolled my eyes at him. 'I'm the coven mistress, Jake.' I said with a sigh. 'I can't really leave this place for your little house on the rez.'

'hey, it's not little' he insisted, then he waggled his brow.

I groaned and shook my head at him. 'You're an idiot.'

He shrugged allowing that. 'No, but seriously, if you're really getting fed up here or worried he might hurt you, there's always a place for you there.'

'Thank you Jake, but I think I need to see this through…'

Jake shrugged. 'let's get inside, I think it's going to rain.' He suggested.

We headed into my room together and spent the rest of the day watching stupid reality tv programs that were vapid and ridiculous but hilarious at the same time when you had someone to ridicule them with. Angela, Quil and Embry joined us at around midnight and it turned into a nice group hang with friends, and alcohol for the wolves, which made them loose lipped and hilarious. Angela and I learned interesting things about the entire pack that night and we were laughing our asses off by the time the three wolves fell asleep dotted around the living room.

Angela sat down next to me, wrapping me in her arms.

'I could get used to this.' I whispered, leaning into her embrace.

'I'll make sure you won't ever have to deal with anything like your previous life again, Bella.' Angela said fierecely. Then she turned to look at me. 'I'm sorry I left you.'

I shrugged. 'there wasn't anything you could have done. If you'd stayed you'd have been treated the same. I'm just glad you found this place and are happy here.'

We hugged each other tightly and spent the night reminiscing about Volterra and the good times we had there.
