In the end, when she finds him, it turns out he's been looking for her too.
She's got a gun to his head, and he's got an arrow to her chest. He rolls his eyes and almost laughs as a wave of deja vu washes over him.
"You're just like your sister."
She pushes the cold metal harder against his forehead.
"Don't talk about her! She's dead because of you." Angry tears threaten to spill from her eyes, and suddenly, his brow furrows and his gaze drops. She sees the shame and guilt weigh heavy on his shoulders.
He lowers his bow slowly, and drops it to the ground. The gun's still at his head.
"She wrote to you. The letter is in my quiver."
She's taken by surprise, her finger still hovering over the trigger.
"She - what?"
Clint sighs and his voice breaks a little when he speaks. "She must have known she might not-" He takes a breath. "She left us all letters. She left me a little package, a wrapped up and neatly tied, with cotton string of all things. Left me instructions to deliver them. Yours is the last one."
The cold metal of the gun is still hovering, but it turns slowly and leans sideways so she can see the just envelope tied in his quiver. With her free hand, she reaches in and yanks envelope out. She tucks it securely into her belt, then presses the gun against Clint's forehead again.
"Tell me how my sister died," she demands.
So he tells her. He tells her more than he'd ever told anyone, even Laura. Something about her makes him feel as if he owes her, owes her more than he can repay, so the least he can do is give her all the details.
He chokes when he gets to the end. "It's should've been me," he keeps saying. "It should've been me."
Yelena's crying by the end of it. Classic Nat. Stupid, selfless, heroic.
"You were her partner." It's a statement. Clint's not sure where she's going with this.
"Yes," he confirms.
"You should have protected her!"
"Yes." It's the 'yes' of a broken man.
She finally lowers the gun. Her arm is sore from holding it up this whole time, but she ignores it.
"Yelena." It's the first time he's said her name. She's almost surprised that he knows who she is. "Yelena, I'm sorry. She was your sister. She loved you. I'm sorry I couldn't save her."
Yelena lets out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding. The tear tracks glimmering on her cheeks match the ones on Clint's face before her.
"I know."
